The Return to Emeralda

Oh what a lovely set of coconuts

The Day

After conducting some quality journalistic research, the world was a very different place the last time TeeSet visited Emeralda. COVID travel restrictions / lockdowns were a thing, the Queen was still the Queen and Blinding Lights, the most streamed song EVER on Spotify, had just been released! Bet you never knew that!

Traditionally, TeeSet has been a society where we have tried to price golf at / around 1JT for a Sunday afternoon. With the boom in popularity of golf in Indonesia, the traditionally ‘cheaper’ courses have all hiked prices, which means that courses thought of as ‘top quality’, such as this week’s host Emeralda, are only just that little bit more expensive… and judging by the feedback of the 17 TeeSetters present on the day, very well worth it!

Fantastic weather greeted the TeeSetters as they began their rounds slightly earlier than planned on both the River and Lake courses. As it turned out, starting on the Lake course was substantially quicker with those players finishing about 45 minutes ahead of those that started on the River course, though special mention / kudos has to go to the starter at Emeralda who helped with the transition between the courses and allowed TeeSet groups to play through… something that is typically unheard of! A big TeeSet thumbs up to Emeralda!

Despite the pleasant weather to start with, there was a spot of, as Weatherman Ian Pemberton so beautifully put it, ‘Mancunian Drizzle’ about halfway through… though as is typical at this time of year, the monsoon conditions didn’t last too long and within a short while, the glorious sunshine returned to cap what was another glorious TeeSet Sunday!

Ignore the water, ignore the water, ignore the water!

No new players or official welcome backs to speak of this week, though joining us for the first time this year were father and son duo Andy and Carter Cross, Italian Stallion Alessandro Perciante and last year’s match-play runner-up, Luca Parolin! Nice to have you back with us!

The Play

The prize for ‘most extraordinary hole of the day’ goes to Ian ‘Mr. Clean’ Pemberton, who started his round by promptly knocking his 3-wood (for safety) straight into the water on the left of the River’s 1st hole. After dropping, laying up to about 100m, he then channeled his inner Bryson DeChambeau and holed out for the unlikeliest of birdies, which promptly brought an end to the crestfallen violin music that accompanied his walk down the fairway, replacing it with a crescendo of whooping, jumping for joy and caddy hugs all around! The dots, as always, were paid out accordingly… how many dots is it for a hole out by the way?

And where was King Dottie whilst this was happening?

In the Stableford competition, fresh off a solid performance last week and continuing his excellent form after his Seattle trip, Axel ‘The Vanisher’ Hertzke was the winner on paper with another fabulous round of golf, firing 41 Stableford points! Unfortunately, he’s far too cool for school to stick around and because of his disappearing act, the prizemoney went to another player who has been consistently showing up on leaderboards (and in blogs), over the last few weeks… Dewi Wardoyo with 39 points and surely another handicap chop coming her way! Well done Dewi!

On the gross side of things, a few good scores to mention this week. Ian ‘Mr. Clean’ Pemberton, fresh off what appeared to be a golf-filled trip to Australia, fired an 81 to take the bronze. In second place, really coming into his own of late, was teenager Carter Cross with another solid round, shooting a 79. In first place, it was Axel ‘The Vanisher’ with a wonderful 1 over par, gross 73… but as he had already vacated the premises, it was Carter (who is both cool and still at school), adding to his piggy bank!

Onto the skill prizes and first birdie, unsurprisingly, went to Mr. Clean after the heroics on his first hole. Lowest putts was again Axel ‘The Vanisher’ with just 27 (no mean feat on Emeralda’s treacherous greens), but as he was already halfway back to goodness knows where, it was the turn of John Gutske to take the prize… another man who’s winning so much cash he’ll have to start making tax declarations soon!

Carter Low Gross. Mr. Clean first birdie Dewi Low Net

Given that John and Dewi had both featured in the prizes, it only seemed fitting to award them a bottle of wine to celebrate their day… so the snappily titled Wine Cartel Bottle of Wine Prize Draw Prize went to John & Dewi! Remember… @winecartel.id on Instagram and www.winecartel.id for all your alcohol needs!

John & Dewi the dynamic duo of the day, enjoy the wine.

TeeSet Matchplay Championship 2025:

Sign-ups are coming thick and fast and if you haven’t already, you can do so via the TeeSet WhatsApp group! The entry cost is 100K and you can pay when you next see Adhe… either this week at Cengkareng or next week at Riverside. Entries will close after the Riverside game and the draw for the first round will be done at the presentation on the day. As always, the first round isn’t a knockout – it just determines your bracket – so even if you lose the first match, you can still go on and win the competition! For more rules / procedures, consult the TeeSet WhatsApp group… it’s all on there!

Coming Up:

The New & Improved Kojo Monthly Medal: The first Kojo Monthly Medal of 2025 sees us return to Cengkareng and this year, things are hotting up. Many thanks to Geoff Thwaites and Kojo who have very kindly sponsored an ACTUAL gold medal for the winners this year! There are still a few spaces remaining for this inaugural-ish event so as normal, sign up the usual way on MyGolf2U!

There be gold in dem dare medals

February Games: All the February games are now posted on MyGolf2U so sign up as usual! February 2 sees us nip down the Jagorawi Toll Road to the former home of Jakarta Interleague Riverside Golf Club which, I am reliably informed, has a new GM in place. February 9 sees TeeSet head to Modern golf Club in Tangerang and on February 16 it’s the turn of Pondok Cabe and the Valentines Day pairs Texas Scramble (more info below. The week after that (February 23), it’s another monthly medal event at Cengkareng! You really are spoilt for choice!

Valentines Day Pairs Texas Scramble: I’ve been binge-watching Love Island Australia on Netflix this week (don’t ask why), so those that watch it will know what I’m talking about. Find someone you ‘vibe with’, go ahead and ‘pull them for a chat’ so that you can ‘couple up’ and take part in the Valentines Day Pairs Texas Scramble on February 16! Further details will be provided nearer the time but when you have found your significant other, you can enter now via the TeeSet WhatsApp group and via MyGolf2U!

Speaking of Valentines Day…:

Bull & Vine are generous sponsors of TeeSet (and in my opinion, the best hang-out spot in Kemang), so it only seems right to give them a mention. If you’re like me and stuck for ideas of where to take your special someone on Valentine’s Day, then look no further than Bull & Vine. They are hosting a ‘romantic evening filled with enchanting moments’ along with a complimentary cocktail and romantic gifts (sounds much classier than Love Island) for 499K ++ per person. For more information and to RSVP, contact 0856 9385 9717.

That’s about it for this week! Gong Xi Fa Cai to those that celebrate Chinese New Year and once again, Long Live Glorious TeeSet!

Season 41 – Week 7 – Imperial Klub Golf

The Day:

Week 7 of the season and it’s a return to Teletubbyland, so called because of the myriad of mounds in the fairway / rough and not because of the golfers that play there, though I’m sure if we all thought hard enough we could find a few Tinky-Winky’s and Dipsy’s within our community!

Imperial Klub (with a K), was the host this week, a gem of a course about 35 minutes from the center of Jakarta. Plenty of interesting holes throughout the layout, with the favorites being the 4th hole with the risk / reward island fairway, the 5th hole with just the risky island green and the 12th hole with no risk or reward whatsoever but instead two enormous ‘lady-lumps’ (thanks Fergie), in the middle of the fairway. Play there and you’ll find out what I mean. Solid changing room facilities, half a driving range (it blew down in a storm before Christmas but kudos to management for getting it back up and running, at least partially) and excellent hospitality make this a TeeSet favorite!

After some horrendous weather last week, this week the golfing / weather gods were on our side as glorious TeeSet was greeted with glorious sunshine. A big TeeSet welcome to new members Andrew Humphreys and Joost Hennalla and a welcome back to Le Petite Napoleon Nicolas Verdenal and his wife, Madame Verdenal who have returned from Singapore… already! See… they just can’t get enough of TeeSet Sundays!

A BIG TeeSet welcome to Andrew Humphreys & Joost Hennalla!

With the course relatively quiet and no Wolfman groups (I’ll get some stick for that), the pace of play was brisk, leading to everyone being back in the clubhouse, showered, changed and being served refreshments while watching the sunset over the 18th hole… which is a far more enjoyable way to enjoy that devilish par 5!

The Play

Plenty of excitement this week as there were some games within the game taking place. The group consisting of Le Petite Napoleon, Chairman Mau, King Dottie Bill Lloyd I and Paul ‘Nickname Coming Soon’ Eckhardt embarked on a hybrid game consisting of ‘The Dice of Destiny’ (rules included for those of you not familiar) and ‘Dots’ (rules not included as I have no idea how it works). After a strong performance by Paul Eckhardt the previous day, the rest of the group were on a quest for vengeance! A lot of fun was had by all and whilst the stroke-play element of the game was largely forgotten about, the men deserve a special mention for their antics on the par 3 5th hole, with all four taking driver and all four of them promptly plopping the balls straight into the lake, one after the other! There were also some sort of tee flip shenanigans on the par 5’s but despite my journalistic endeavors, I still can’t quite get to the bottom of exactly what that entailed, though I’m reliably informed that ‘havoc on the dots spread ensued!’ Each to their own I guess!

Another special point of note goes to Former President Michael Seabrook. Feeling revitalized from having the survival of TeeSet removed from his shoulders, his golf game appears to have come (back?) into form… at least according to MyGolf2U… His handicap being slashed to 14.5 under the new WHS system, though this has led to significant concern spreading across the face of the Interleague selection committee as his shots were desperately needed with the season commencing in only a few weeks! Seabrook is certain he can blow this handicap out to a handy 24 come the start of the Jakarta Interleague.

For those whose game did not get dicey or dottie (pretty sure I met them in Vegas last year), there was a Stableford competition in play. In second place this week we had Finn Jaakko Valli with a score of 33 points but winning this week, at least on paper, was a man who has returned from Seattle with a pep in his step and a golf swing to match… Axel Hertzke this week’s winner with 35 points! However, it pays to stick around and as Axel had departed, the cash went to Jaakko! Well done… to you both!

A special mention to Andrew Humphreys, a new member playing the course for the first time, with an ‘unofficial’ score of 39 points as he’s yet to obtain a valid TeeSet handicap.  Get those 3 cards in quick to start winning the prizes!

Our prizewinners this week… Well done Jaakko & Jude!

On the low gross side of things, Axel also swept that with an 80 but as had vanished, that was passed down to Jaakko… but as he had already won a prize and TeeSet really does believe that sharing is caring, the prize went to Jude Alexander who was third best but this week’s gross winner with a gross 89! Well done Jude!

Thankfully, far less juggling / explaining needed when it comes to the skill prizes which this week were dominated by the TeeSet ladies!

First birdie this week was the ever popular and multi-talented Rosie Tjaden, hitting one close and sticking it in at the short par 3 7th hole. I say multi-talented as for those of you that don’t know, Rosie’s frequent WhatsApp statuses are a joy to behold while sat in tiresome afternoon meetings. Her golf videos (nice new wedge, Rosie) and cooking clips will keep you entertained for hours! I’m waiting for the video of you attempting a hole in one over Arne’s car!

As for the Low Putts, it was Sari Smith, who is not a YouTube star (at least as far as I know) but is very good at putting, needing just 28 to navigate what are traditionally tricky greens!

Sari, Andrew (who won the wine) & YouTube Golfer / Chef Rosie!

Finally, given the fact that Andrew had been left out of the cash prizes on a technicality, it was good fortune that his 39 points was acknowledged as he was this week’s winner of the Wine Cartel Lucky Draw Bottle of Wine Prize… there must be a snappier title for that, surely?! Thank you to Wine Cartel for sponsoring and remember to slide into their DM’s on Instagram @winecartel.id or by visiting  www.winecartel.id for 10% off your first order!

TeeSet Matchplay:

Who has it in them to dethrone last year’s champ, Former Singing President Craig ‘Tinngi’ Ewers? If you think you have what it takes (and even if you don’t, act as if you do anyway), and enter over the course of the next few weeks. Entries will close after the Kojo Monthly Medal at Cengkareng on January 26 so if you want to enter, do so next week at Emeralda or on Medal day itself. The entry fee is IDR100K and full rules, procedures and all the other small print will be released nearer the time, though they’re pretty much the same as last year!

Coming Up:

January Games: This week is the one you’ve been waiting for as TeeSet make a return after more than 3,650 days to Emeralda. Some of the group played there on Friday last week and the condition was described as nothing short of sensational. All the information is on MyGolf2U… sign up as normal! The week after that we return to Cengkareng for the first Kojo Monthly Medal of 2025. Archbishop / Weatherman / Friendly Ghost Ian will be returning from Australia over the next few days with an actual gold medal, courtesy of Kojo / Geoff Thwaites… unless customs nab it from him for ‘safekeeping’ upon landing.

Valentines Day Pairs Texas Scramble: Love is (almost) in the air and February 16 at Pondok Cabe is nearly upon us! It’s time to choose that lucky lady / man / significant other to be your valentine and join what is one of the most popular events of the year amongst TeeSetters! Start falling truly, madly and deeply for your preferred partner and once you’re TeeSet official, sign up on MyGolf2U. More information on format, fun games, (optional) dress code and all that jazz over the coming few weeks!

Until next time… Long Live Glorious TeeSet!

Season 41 – Week 6 – Jakarta Golf Club (The 2025 Curtain Raiser)

The Day:

Can you believe, that after all the Christmas / New Year shenanigans, we’re already over a week into 2025?! As the saying goes, ‘doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun!’ Or, as the slightly less snappy saying goes, ‘doesn’t time fly when you’re one of the 11 TeeSetters that played last Sunday!’

Jakarta Golf Club, conveniently located in the center(ish) part of the city, played host to the TeeSet 2025 curtain raising event. Founded way back in 1872, it has the title of being the oldest golf club in Indonesia and one of the oldest in Asia, Coincidentally, 1,872 is also the approximate number of shots that it would take me to play 18 holes there… the tight and tree-lined fairways would prove too much of a match for my notoriously wayward drives!

With the absence of most of the committee this week, it was the turn of Former Singing President, Craig Tinggi Ewers to step in and host. As it turned out, that personnel decision was perfect as after 11 (or so) holes, the heavens opened, the lightning struck and Craig & The Gang were left singing in the rain… or, more accurately, singing and drinking the wine generously donated by TeeSet sponsors Wine Cartel, in the clubhouse!

With the golf washed out, the wine consumed and still some hours to go before bedtime, in what must be TeeSet record, over half the contingent decided to continue the entertainment at Bull & Vine, another TeeSet sponsor. Work on Monday wasn’t on the agenda!

The Play:

Given the fact that the golf was somewhat abbreviated, I’ll quickly recap the serious prizes before moving onto the fun stuff!

The runner-up and featuring on the blog for all the right reasons for the third consecutive week, was Dougie McQuater. His 20 points through the holes played good enough to earn back-to-back-to back prizes! The winner this week though, a man who had a stellar year in 2024 (2 holes in one, a Big Dog and a trip to The Open), was John Gutske… his 21 points through the holes played enough to take top spot! Starting 2025 off just how he finished 2024! Well done John!

Given the weather, there was no low putts prize this week, though there was a first birdie, the Former Singing President coming up clutch at the long par 3 3rd hole to take the Rupiah!

Dougie, John & Craig chuffed with their prizes. What are Gary and Hitoshi plotting in the background?

As I wrote in the previous blog (and I hope you were paying attention), given the tree-lined nature of the course there were some special prizes for this week only! To qualify for a… wait for it… ‘woody’, you had to hit a tree and get a nett par on the same hole. Dewi came out the gates hot and jumped right on it, grabbing her woody after hitting a tree on the 3rd hole on her way to a nett par.  However, size matters in this competition and it was Hitoshi ‘The Samurai’ Maruyama’s woody that was the biggest and the best… he nailed three trees on his way to a nett par at hole 9! Both players looked delighted!

Thank you to Wine Cartel for sponsoring the prizes and by popular demand, the woody will return at a future TeeSet event!

Wine Cartel: Speaking of Wine Cartel, perhaps you’ve had a heavy December and vowed to take it easy in January, deciding to spend a few cozy nights in with Netflix and whatever comes next. You see someone who takes your fancy, you slide into his/her DM’S, you get your ‘rizz on’ and invite your special someone over to ‘chill’. Then, shock horror, you realize, that you’ve got no wine left!

Fear not! The night is not ruined! Just get hold of Wine Cartel! Add them on Instagram @winecartel.id or on WhatsApp (+62 817 774 666) and order wines and spirits directly from them at excellent prices including quick delivery… ideal for those emergency situations! They’re currently offering a 10% discount on your first order by visiting www.winecartel.id/discount/SAVE10%2525.

Coming Up:

January Games: We’ve got some cracking games lined up for you and the schedule until the end of February is posted on (the revamped) MyGolf2U. This coming Sunday (January 12), it’s ‘time for Teletubbies’ as we head to Imperial. The week after that (January 19), we have a special one as we return to the world-class Emeralda… a course that’s been off the rotation for at least the last decade. Finally, to round off what has been a scintillating start to the year, we have the Kojo Monthly Medal at Cengkareng on January 26.

Valentine’s Day Scramble: I know, I know… we’ve just got through Christmas and I’m already writing about Valentine’s Day. However, mark your calendars as the first TeeSet special event of the year is soon to be upon us! Sunday February 16 sees us head to Pondok Cabe for the Valentine’s Day Pairs Texas Scramble. Keep an eye out for the one you love, like, or can merely tolerate for 18 holes and send them a valentine (or a bottle of wine from Wine Cartel) and start arranging your pairs now. More details about the event in due course and you can, once you’ve found a partner, sign up on MyGolf2U!

That’s it for this week! Happy golfing and as always, Long Live Glorious TeeSet!

Modern golf at Modern Golf Course

Modern Report

The Day:

Game #2 of the Glorious TeeSet 24/25 Season saw us zip down the Jakarta-Merak toll road, turn right at the big IKEA, wind our way through a (rather nice) housing estate and end up at Modern Golf & Country Club. 21 golfers made the trip and were rewarded with a golf course in excellent condition and given the location, free from the rain that had enveloped vast swathes of the city over the previous days.

Modern itself boasts a fairly long course with some testing bunkers, though given the more forgiving width of the fairways, it’s accessible to everyone. I should also point out that the changing facilities are excellent with a jacuzzi, cold plunge pool and a sauna, for those that are interested in such things.

A warm TeeSet family welcome along to Peter Cue who was joining us for his first game (well played and we hope to see you again) and a special mention to the Tjaden’s who had a family day out with Arne (more on him later), Rosie and Jannes (more on him later too) all joining.

The Play:

Kudos to the management at Modern who were able to guide our troop around 18 holes and be back in the clubhouse, showered and changed, well before sunset, which is no mean feat considering that Modern, especially in rainy season, is one of the more popular courses. Further kudos also to the quality of golf on display within TeeSet at the moment with about 70% of the field shooting within 5 shots of their handicap! The Interleague captain is eagerly taking note ahead of next season!

Onto the winners and after being put to the sword in the Championship and again last week, the TeeSet men (finally) roared back into life.

Shooting a nett 72 and coming in third place was the Korean Dynamo and Interleague MVP, Daniel ‘DP’ Park. Arne Tjaden showed sparkling form with a nett 68 to come second but, leading the charge this week and taking the main prize with a blistering nett 67 (5 under handicap), was relative newbie Adam Ross, who has clearly settled into life and golf in Jakarta after arriving earlier this year. Congratulations Adam!

Arne takes the candy with an absent Adam. Well done on a great round

On the gross front, despite the fact that he is off to Singapore soon, Napoleon Verdenaal clearly is still clearly intent on collecting as much Rupiah as possible before departing, swashbuckling his way to a gross 76 to win by 4 strokes over the aforementioned Adam Ross and Chairman Mau himself.

As far as the skill prizes were concerned, not to be outdone by his father’s performance, Jannes Tjaden took first birdie

__ and Mr. Smiley Claudio Ghelli (who is sort of smiling in the below photo), took low putts

Next Week:

We return to the WHITE TEES (see below) at Cengkareng for the ever popular Kojo Monthly Medal. Last season, the TeeSet ladies reigned supreme at this event with over half the medals going the way of the XX chromosome, so it’s time for some good old fashioned intersex rivalry to see if the men have what it takes to wrestle dominance back. Tee off time, as usual, is from 12:04 but get there early just in case we can squeeze off earlier. Sign up on MyGolf2U and if you want to request a buggy, send a message to the TeeSet WhatsApp Group.

White Tee ’25

As a society, TeeSet is always looking to improve the enjoyment and experience for all members that play with us. With that in mind, starting with this week’s Kojo Monthly Medal, for 2025 all TeeSet games will be played from the white tee boxes.

There are loads of really dull stats we could cite about this change (average TeeSet handicap, average driving distance x 28 to give course length, age of TeeSet members and so on), but the best thing to say is that Bryson DeChambeau is a ‘dawg’ and he won the U.S. Open last year by practicing / playing off the reds… and if it’s good enough for Bryson, then it’s good enough for us! He even makes videos about it… check one out below to get you in the mood!

He also made a hole in one over his house recently, though Cengkareng hasn’t given us permission to play the 4th hole over the clubhouse… yet!

Other Stuff:

MyGolf2U / Score Entry – A gentle reminder (please) that scores should be entered by the golfer on the app during / straight after the round so that results can be accurately calculated. Paper scorecards should be handed in with first birdie, first sandy and putts clearly marked to make it easier to correctly allocate prizes to the winners.

Coming Up – As I wrote in the last blog, Christmas doesn’t stop TeeSet Sundays! We have our Christmas Party game on December 22 at Pondok Cabe and our End of Year / Happy New Year Party game on December 29 at Gading Raya. Sign up on MyGolf2U.

Capricorn Birthday Bash Golf Game – For those remaining in Jakarta over the Christmas / New Year period, the Capricorn Birthday Bash golf event (formerly known as Rod Williams’ birthday), is on Friday December 27 at Cengkareng. The first tee-off is at 12:00 and you can sign up on, you guessed it, MyGolf2U.

Long Live Glorious TeeSet!

The Glorious TeeSet Championship

When TeeSet comes out to play excitement quite intense prevails amongst our golfers. Even more so on this day, as it was championship day. We had golfers flying in from distant shores, Frank, Anna & Santi amongst them. We had golfers with new body bits, Patrick. We had golfers with drinking problems, the Committee. Then we had golfers with their eye on the prize, they shall be unnamed as TeeSet is a social golf club.

The lull before the storm

Adhe was on site bright an early setting up banners and registration table and most importantly the Bloody Mary Bar staffed by Jamal. The day was not a shotgun start as we needed larger number s so we were off holes 1 and 10 starting at 11.30. large numbers of golfers were arriving earlier than usual was this to practise their putting and chipping? From the crowd around Jamal’s Bloody Mary BAr the answer was a definite No.

The Game

Most of the players made it into the photo. Taken inside this year for the first time in TeeSet history and for once you can actually identify everyone in it. Even Bags, who’s trying to hide behind the banner. Phot over and off to the battlefields of Cengkareng.

This is what 71 of Jakarta’s finest golfers were wanting to claim as their own but there would only be but winner on the day. Who would soar above the opposition to grasp this glorious trophy? The President? The Italians? Or someone from the large contingent of Americans who had signed up? Maybe a local or one of the Malaysians? The Finns had been in cracking form in the lead into the competition and a bit of the smart money was on Mikko.

Off we golfed with weather conditions looking ominous as clouds gathered in the south. The temperature was cool and the golf course in great knick. The 2am finish was barely felt as the first drive of the day found the centre of the fairway. Probably should gave gone home then. As President I shouldered my burden and golfed on. Bob from HotHed had a deft hand with the flat stick and after the first 6 holes was on 6 putts.

Meanwhile on. the 1st hole the first flight was a flight that held its own excitement, as it contained the 2 golfers fighting it out to win the TeeSet Matchplay. Luca and Craig had shown good form to get this far and Luca’s convincing win in the previous round had bookies lowering their odds. Craig was favoured to win if it went down to a toss of the coin as this is how he had progressed through most of the competition.

The light faded and the skies darkened but Glorious TeeSet golfed on and on and on. Until the lightning warning. Luckily we were close to Tee Box 17 which also held beer, glorious Anker beer from our San Miguel sponsors. Rapidly abandoning the 16th green, with my ball in birdie range, we sought shelter, well we sought beer, as there was little shelter as 4 other flights were there also. 30 minutes later and fully rehydrated with 4 refreshing cans of Anker back to take the birdie putt. Only missed by 4 foot, Anker is there anything you can’t do?

Long Drive hole smacked the dimples off the ball and watched it sail true and straight as far as I have hit a ball in a longtime. There it was sitting in the middle of the fairway, the 10th fairway. Meanwhile previous golfers took the trail more trodden and the long drive mens was a close affair with a booming 295 metre drive from Jannes being 2 metres short of Lionel’s monster of 297. Honorable mention to Ryan who also touched the 290 metre mark.

HotHed HotDogs, and I was sharring a ride with Bob so he pointed out a few prime dogs at the bbq wagon and while they were prepping them it was into the beers. Must retain hydration or risk dehydration. Good dogs at a good time in the game. Over to the first, more beer this time on the card. Cursed by the golf gods for taking the piss out of Webby saw me in the trees then a magical shot from the flower bed through two golf carts and we are ready to hit. Bogey.

4th hole, the par 3 traffic jam hole where Wine Cartel were handing out screwdrivers. Screwdrivers and beer keep you hydrated. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of copious amonts of alcohol on the golf course. It takes the pain away, and I was in a world of pain. Stay hydrated, I must stay hydrated. Luckily I had instructed Adhe to restock the beer stations after the lightning warning or many a golfer may not have been hydrated.

The course was a sea of orange, a very popular colour, picked out this year by TeeSets most fashionable golfer, Sam. Sam has a range of golf gear that is designed to impress and a game to go with it. Aussie Joe wore his own flower ensemble this year and looked lovely, unfortunately no prizes for best dressed.

The pace of play was perfect for such a large group starting off 1 & 10. Some lucky golfers played from the 10th 3 times. In a rush to beat the darkness and ensure the groups behind ours could finish in light I pulled it to a lovely position to once again, for the 3rd time, find myself in the middle of the 10th fairway. Next shot smack on the green 3 metre putt for a birdie to finish my time as President. Well remember hydration, hydration? Well I was probably over-hydrated at this point and nestled the ball on the lip of the hole. A plane load of passengers flying in from Singapore heard the last rant of the swearing President as he departed with a par.

It was a great day golfing with Bob “HotDogs” Fleishman, Patrick “New Hip”Chaundy and Michael “Leave it Short” Webb. The first players had been back at least an hour and were well into their cups. The winner of the Matchplay had been decided and the final scores of the Championship were waiting to be entered with The Singing President overseeing that. Knowing the world was in safe hands I head to the lockers.

The Winners

Every day has it winners but at glorious TeeSet everyone’s a winner. That was written for the new age sensitive types to give them a fuzzy warm feeling. At TeeSet we play to win.

The 2024 TeeSet Club Champion is Eli Dahlia with a net 66 to win on a count back. Well done Champ.

In 2nd place Jari also with a nett 66 but lost on a countback. Life can be hard, but Jari was happy and if there had been more beer on the course he told me he would have taken a shot or two off his score. An under-hydrated Finn. Well played Jari.

In 3rd place was Irene, nett 67. A great photo here of Renny and Irene. Mismanagement had managed to screw up the scores and had wrongly awarded 3rd place to Renny. Well played both ladies and great sportsmanship and camaraderie on display. Well done Craig.

Low gross 74 and long drive 297m. Well done Lionel and thanks to you and Jeremy for the sponsorship via JLS Golf

Shinta takes ladies long drive with an impressive 225 metre hit. Shinta then went back to back with the skill prizes also taking nearest the pin. Jens was still in shock hours later.

John takes nearest the pin 215 cm. A good effort from last years defending champion.

Low putts with 28 goes to Aussie Joe. Joe started the round on fire.

This year’s Matchplay Champion, Craig, with a win over Luca. Well done boys.

TeeSet Interleague Captain, Sam, presenting our most valuable player his trophy. Well done Daniel and thanks for the leadership and throughout the season, Sam & Dean. A great speech to sum up the season also Sam. Onwards to victory next year Glorious TeeSet.

Clubman of the year, Richard Mau. Thanks for all your support this year and in many previous years.

Jessica wins the best photo of the round. See photo at top of page. Thanks to Wine Cartel for sponsoring the prize.

The Rundown

After the golf prizes there were lots of other winners of the lucky draw.

We also had a birthday girl, Rosie. Hcp 16 age a little bit older.

A great day was had by all and I am sure this brief report has some glaring omissions but hydration and time erase most memories.

A special thanks to this years Committee, Roger, Bill, Dean, Craig and Sam. A huge thanks to all those that played in this Glorious TeeSet Championship & for all those that played throughout the year.

Well done to Bill and Craig for MCing the evening and for all the behind the scenes work done by Adhe. A great effort by Cengkareng to get everything right on the day, tee off times, drink stations, banners and a great buffet.

SPONSORS

A special thanks to all of this years sponsors. Your names are on the banner and without you the event would not shine as brightly as it does on the Jakarta Golfing Calendar.

Imperial Golf Course

Imperial Klub Golf in West Jakarta, Tee Times, Reviews

There you go TeeSetters a view from the other end of Madonna. Notice how the flow of her golden locks envelopes the swell of her right breast? Well I slapped a shot into those locks and being a glutton for punishment took 2 shots to slap it out of them there locks. I prefered Madonna when she had short hair.

Lots on this weekend so will keep this short. We only had 12 players but a poretty impressive dirty dozen as you will find on any golf course in Jakarta on any given Sunday. We had the Finns and Thwaites and Sutcliffe jumping a hole to get the game underway. We then had Westen, Park, Ross and Alexander hitting it long on the first. Bring up the rear of the field were Dougie, Paul Vijay and the President. Vijay may have got a shot off before the round started, but at the wrong hole. we were all supposed to start at 10, Vijay.

A couple of pars and boggies on the first for the rear enders, followed by a surprise birdie from the President on the next as Vijay and Paul beat themselves up on the 2nd of the day. MAdonna’s nipples proved to be unaligned and this was the start of the Presidential downfall, as the rest managed pars or bogies, The President managed a few expletives and a big score.

On we golfed falling further and further behind Ezra’s group. The Finns were flying and Thwaites was popping pills to keep pace. On and on we golfed up and up went the level of steam as the President found fairways not in play and fluffed tee shots. The cussing was only matched by that foul mouthed Scot Ure who was finding a wayward driver caused him to swear like an Aussie.

Anyway the pain was eventually over for the President and Paul. Vijay did his brass matchplaying Douglas, who had a pretty reasonable round. Back to the clubhouse into the locker rooms where a rather large Asian gentleman was stretched out butt naked in my locker section. Leaving no where to sit. I wandered the changerooms wondering what had I done to deserve that. Anyways he final put some pants on and made an exit. The stuff that cannot be unseen in the changerooms of Jakarta golf clubs is the stuff of movies, very bad movies.

Onto the winners

Mikko takes the chocolates with 38 Stableford points. Mikko is in a purple patch of golf at the moment and a lot of the smart money is on him to take the Championship on Saturday. Has he played 5 times this season? I hope so.

Sam takes the low gross on one of his favorite courses with a pretty handy 77. Another one to watch this Saturday as he fights for the low gross prize in a fairly tight field.

Graham stealing the President’s money with a birdie on his first hole the 11th. He’s a good chance for the long drive win on Saturday if he can keep it between the lines.

Well that may be a trifecta of winners there. Come 6pm on Saturday we will see who steps into the winners’ circle and are hailed by their TeeSet comrades.

Gading Raya and another Storm

Don’t you just hate that tree lurking in front of the tee box. Not in play but in the back of your mind. Well Smacking one off the tee box last Sunday the ball lodged itself in the upper limbs of the tree, never to be seen again. They managed to burn the cathedral down at the other end of this hole, now someone needs to burn this tree down. The President has a 90% hit rate on it. Aim left, aim left, hit right into tree.

A good crowd turned out for one of the regions more friendly courses and we were soon off to a flying start with the first group teeing off 10 minutes before advertised time. But no one was off as early than the Finns who wrangled themselves a 10.30 slot. It’s not what you know but who you know. We won’t be seeing much of Pekka shortly as his assignment has come to an end in Indonesia he is heading home to guard against brewing Russian troubles. It was good while it lasted Pekka, see you at the Championship, for one last hurrah. It was good to see Timo back for a visit and Mikko is becoming a regular onTeeSet.

I was in the excellent company of Mr. Webb and JP. The company was excellent the golf a little wayward at times, the language very blue most of the time. The frustrations of golf really increases a man’s mastery of his native tongue, as he seeks verbal combinations to express the pain or the joy that the golf course is giving him. Mike is short, but his putts were shorter, after playing last week with a tentative Jude this week was an eye opener in how to leave putts 10 foot short. In Mike’s defense he hasn’t been playing a lot recently. Meanwhile the President and JP were feeling similar frustrations with putts lipping out and failing to drop. Where’s a good earth tremor when you need one.

In front of us were the handy golfers of Sam, Adam and Daniel they seemed to be motoring along at a reasonable pace with not too much time spent pondering putts. Behind us were Craig and Luca battling it out in a Matchplay semi-final, they were accompanied by Hitoshi and Nicolas. As a 4 ball they quickly fell behind. The ladies 4 ball of Hana, Jane, Renny and Eli followed with a bag full of liquor and shot glasses. The Dot squad of Bill, Ian, Richard and Axel trooped on behind them. The final group of Sari, Tri, Joe & Jason had some how or another managed to get the jump on everyone and teed off first. This was duly noted by the President and the necessary authorities have been notified. It bodes poorly for them.

On the other side of the course Ale, Phil and Jessica led the groups off. Missing was Bags who is fielding positions in Trump’s new Government, word on the street is he made be the next ambassador to Indonesia, let the good times flow. Others playing that side of the course included Geoff, George, Steve and a big squadron of Thais with Jens and Shinta keeping an eye on two of them. Our resident Thai, Mr Mee, has been absent and his countrymen all arrive.

The day was flowing along smashingly, when the wind started to increase and we know what that is a forewarning of. That’s right, a storm, no sooner had we finished 9 holes and arrived at the 10th than off goes the siren. Well positioned to get to the clubhouse we quickly abandoned, temporarily, play. When the siren goes you head for shelter, no questions asked. Lightning hits with no warning. Back at the clubhouse the slippery when wet signs were positioned around the damp section of the clubhouse and TeeSetters moved to the drier back areas and beers were ordered. After downing a couple of beers it was all clear on the siren and it was back to the carts. The rain had caused groups to back up on the 10th which provided TeeSetters the opportunity to take part in their favorite adult beverage as they awaited tee time.

Now, a warning to you inexperienced golfer/drinkers it doesn’t always improve your game. I know it should, as alcohol certainly improves my dancing, driving and dart skills. In the words of the great philosopher, Homer, “Is there anything alcohol can’t do?” Well we all know the answer to that one, so let’s move it along. The triples on the 11th, 12th, and 13th had me wondering about bloody Homer Simpson and his homespun wisdom. But I will give it another chance, very soon.

Just as things started to pick up there was an almighty clap of thunder as Hughie let us know of his displeasure of golfing on the Sabbath. Immediately the siren sounded and a dash to shelter was on. There was quite the TeeSet gathering at the hospitality hut on the 14, many of us were on

Which comes in 2 golf friendly flavours. Someone who was not on Cloud 7 was Craig who had just put his ball in the pond while Luca had managed to get it with in a couple of metres of the pin. Victory was looking good for Luca. The clap of thunder had rattled Nico’s eardrums and senses and he took on the role of chief can crusher with some assistance from his apprentice Jane.

It was soon apparent that the weather was not going to improve and the supply of Cloud 7 was dwindling so it was into the carts and a dash back to the clubhouse riding in the slowest buggies in Jakarta. No prizes this week except for first birdie

Pekka birdied the first so he takes the money. Well done Pekka. The Finns for 2 weeks in a row were enjoying a very long warm down.

So a bunch of us end up at Sale and wished Tri a happy birthday

Glorious TeeSetters

Things got messy and further photos or videos will not be published to avoid complete embarrassment for those involved. Some of whom may have been seated in this photo, maybe.

Stormy weather over Gading Raya.

For the golfer sound of body and serene of mind there is no such thing as bad weather; every round has its beauty, and storms which whip the blood do but make it pulse more vigorously.

The above photo is one taken by a Teesetter at Gading Raya in 2019. Last Sunday it was too dangerous to contemplate outdoor photography So here are some shots that truly capture the terror TeeSetters were faced with last Sunday

You can feel the angst amongst this group as the storm rages over head. If not for the ample supply of bravery juice they would have all surely have been beseeching Hughie, the God of Golf weather.

Some more fortunate golfers made it to a slightly better stocked shelter shed, that also had a range of vaping products, as the wind made it quite difficult to torch an old fashioned cancer stick up.

Meanwhile back in the brand new clubhouse the 2 flights that thought they had found the best spot to wait out the storm were soon shuffling tables and donning the waterproofs as the ceiling started leaking like a sieve and the electrics sparked and farted and fizzled out. Our thoughts were with the building contractor, hoping he had had enough time to escape the country. There is some rumour going around that he is the main contractor on the new Capital City, Nusantara.

A photo of one of the drier sections of the clubhouse.

The day started out in very reasonable weather. A short delay as a two ball playing their final two holes were allowed to play through. Then the first group stood on the tee box and flayed shots to the left right and straight up in the air. This had all the makings of a pretty ordinary round. Jude managed to scramble a boofie what was written on the two Dougs and President’s scorecards will not be disclosed here to prevent further embarrassment. Hey it’s the first hole and none of these golfers have been known to take advantage of the excellent driving range adjacent to the first tee to shake the cobwebs out of their swings. That’s for the realm of golfers who don’t buy second hand balls. Social slappers work their way into the game.

Anyways, with in a few holes the pars started coming, mainly for Jude but the rest of us nailed a couple as we raced the weather. The wind started blowing but we golfed on and on and on then finally there was the siren blowing its warning of an incoming electrical storm. It is important that these sirens are heeded for the safety of players and caddies. A few lightning strikes on golf courses have left stains where the victims once stood.

On hearing the siren we were fortunately close enough to the brand spanking new clubhouse and so sought shelter there. Air Conditioned well lit and lovely ceiling fans ahh the luxury. Down came the rain and lightning and we barely thought of our fellow golfers suffering in crappy little shelters as we purveyed the menu’s full range of eastern delights. With in minutes I was feeling a little drizzle, then the rain was pouring through the lights and fans. Mop boys were called for, then bucket boys. We retreated to higher ground. Sari and the Malaysians found a drier location also, Adhe was forced to relocate also. The weather radar was painting a bleak picture. The lightning lit up the overcast afternoon and the thunder had the locals quivering in fear. Slowly golfers from around the course were making dashes to the clubhouse pool.

Gading Raya was offering rain vouchers for golfers yet to complete 6 holes we were on the8th tee box when the storm hit so were cussing our luck on missing out. A decision was made to head for the exit as the water level was rising and the service was dropping so caddies were paid off and to the changerooms we went. Just then the all clear siren sounds so a quick dash to re-employ our caddies and our 4 ball minus Douglas MacQuarter were charging back into the fray.

Here’s a shot of a few golfers who didn’t charge back into the fray but stayed for some adult beverages in the soggy clubhouse

A light drizzle persisted for a hole or two but Doug Ure was off to a smashing start with a crunching 250m + drive to restart the game. Myself and Jude took a more conservative route electing to drive a bit over the 100m line. You need to warm up again. By the end of the 8th hole Jude was wishing he’d stayed indoors, but in true TeeSet character he battled on and was soon back into par mode. Doug nailed a nice birdie and parred the index 1, to finish in style whilst the President managed a sandy par on the 18th

Back to the clubhouse to see who else made it. Bags, The Singing Ex-President were well into their cups in the company of Tri. The Finns who had started early were into a Bintang inspired warm down. Warming down after sport is a necessity and TeeSet’s chosen warm down fluid is any product from the Brewery of San Miguel when available, normally found in Bill Lloyd’s medicine box. Slowly the survivors came in and it was encouraging to see more than half the starters had hung tough to complete the day.

Let’s get to the winners

Here they all are from left to right. Low gross Ian with 77, Michael first sandy 18th, Bill 40 Stableford points, Alessandro a birdie on the 1st. Missing from this group is TeeSet’s favourite fairweather golfer, Axel, who nailed an eagle on his 4th hole.

There was a bit of chatter about how good Ian’s round was in some difficult conditions. Ian himself was aware that things were rolling along nicely but in the back of his mind was his jinx 76. Probably doesn’t help if you have Bill on the green calling dots. But good golf from both the Stableford and low gross winners.

This Sunday back to Gading Raya, first tee time 11.30

Kojo Monthly Medal at Cengkareng

There was movement in the clubhouse as the word had got around that the President was out of town. So all the young cracks and old yardage experts assembled at the clubhouse to see who could wrest the monthly medal. And there ends the tale as the MyGolf2U has gone bonkers on me and I have no time to wait while it is fixed.

What I do know was that once again there was a great turnout for the Medal and competition was stiff. So let’s get to the prizes then move onto some housekeeping stuff.

Monthly Medal Winner, Rosie, with a return to form from earlier in the year with a handicap busting net 65. Well done.

With the yips back under control welcome back to the winner’s circle Roger with the low gross 81. Surprise surprise low putts also. Hit the fringe big fella hit the fringe.

Long Drive winner with a 254m into the wind win, Mr Lee

Shinta takes the ladies long drive with a booming hit of 214m. longer than 90% of the men probably.

Nearest the Pin Men, Adam. With a well placed iron shot finishing 226 from the pin.

Anna went well inside the Men’s NTP popping one on to 150cm. Birdie time?

Joe takes first birdie on hole 5

Leon picks up first sandy par on the 2nd hole.

Welcome to new member Ryan. We look forward to your golfing company going forward.

Another new member Jaakko, joining our already strong Finnish contingent.

So do the committee and the President a favour and sign up now.

We have 2 new sponsors for the championship added to the ones you can already see on the flyer. They are
