Next Up: Monthly Medal 31st March 2019 Cengkareng

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2019.

In addition to being the 3rd Monthly Medal of the year, this week will also be the first round of Cycle X of the Tee Set Eclectic and so a good opportunity to lay down a marker in seeking to wrest the Eclectic Trophy from our current Champion, Lorenzo Marengo. We’ve not had a 2-time winner yet so will this be the cycle when someone breaks the rhythm?

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp850,000 walking please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng management have purchased a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.

Sunday 24th March 2019 Riverside

The Play

riverside summary

For the first time in several seasons the Jakarta Interleague was not being hosted at Jagorawi so our regular Tee Set players and the rest of the JIL teams headed to Riverside on Sunday for the opening round of matches and Tee Set’s regular Sunday event. We were treated to excellent weather and the course being presented in great condition as the Riverside team continue to make improvements to various holes on the course and the Club House.

As usual Riverside has some tricky holes which penalized errant tee shots but overall we were all to enjoy an excellent day. No newcomers this week whilst on the welcome backs it was a pleasure to see Mel Cantarella back after 17 weeks.

Thank you to the Riverside staff for their efforts in hosting us on Sunday and to VP Ric Wymer for managing both Tee Set and JIL duties on the day.

The Day

riverside winners

A modest skirt day with Chris Hunter, Eric Mary and Rakesh Surampudi all failing on at least one occasion to reach the red tees whilst Harry Lopez and Len Ogembo shared Most Strokes on 10. 1st Par for handicaps >=30 went to Mel Cantarella for his effort on hole 4.

Low Putts went to Fitrat Ameer, 1st Sandy went to Jens Roestel, First Birdie to Mark Fiorello and Most Improved to Craig Edwards.

Low Gross was won by Samret Raungrit with 84 whilst Efsi Hayati (76), Lorenzo Marengo (72) and Jeff Durham (74) were our Low Net winners; albeit with a little confusion as Mark Johnson stepped up for Low Net A forgetting that the grade cut offs had changed… I’m sure it will all get sorted out next week.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed scoring is here Form_ Current Results Riverside.

In the JIL matches….After last year’s whitewash in round 1 at the hands of this week’s opponent, Tin Cups, Tee Set made a strong start this year with a 6-4 victory over the JIL reigning champions; a result matched by Sandbaggers over Cloggies whilst early honours at the top of the league chart goes to Pocksia who won 7-3 over Sentul Swingers aided by some Tee Set fill ins.

Next up: Riverside Sunday 24th March 2019 11.30am shot gun

RiversideThis Sunday we take the short trip down to Junction 19 on the Jagorawi toll to visit the excellent Riverside course. The Greg Norman designed Riverside is always one of the most interesting challenges on the Tee Set schedule with the Shark’s trademark optical illusions regularly fooling the unwary.

In addition to our weekly schedule, this Sunday sees the kick-off of the 2019 Jakarta Inter-League season which moves location to Riverside after several years of being hosted at Jagorawi. As usual, for those Tee Set players participating in JIL (whether for Tee Set or otherwise), please also sign up as normal for the weekly competition so we can capture you for both events.

To join us for the fun of one of Jakarta’s finest courses on Sunday just sign up here as usual. Green fees of Rp850,000 including a shared cart and some free range balls with a tee time of 11.30pm: please be there before 11.00am as we will have a shot-gun start so it takes a little more time to get bags/players organized and out to the respective holes

Sunday 17th March 2019 BSD

The Day

No newcomers this week but a healthy turnout of 34 Tee Setters to BSD for what is always a popular venue; a good test of golf on a top golf course and the opportunity for some after event socialization at Casa De La Mexicana for those making a full evening of it. With the weather being mild and the rain staying away for most of the round, we enjoyed a pleasant round on a somewhat quiet course.

As usual, the undulating greens of BSD provide one of our more difficult putting tests of the year and Sunday was no exception with several pins tucked near slopes to challenge our prowess on the greens. We have had a few weeks of long carries from Blue to Red tees but with us playing off the white tees this week, we had the usual sight on hole 11 of the ladies teeing off behind the men due to the placement of the tee boxes.

Welcome backs of note to Grant Lutz after 80 weeks and Dennis Kloeth after 30 weeks. A thank you also to Dennis Kloeth without whom we would not be able to secure the favourable arrangements and access to BSD each year and to Ric Wymer for managing the scoring and presentations on the day. Pictures of the day are here.

The Play

Showing that BSD respects no-man, not even its members, Dennis Kloeth took home the trifecta of booby prizes for the sole skirt of the day, Most Strokes and Monster Putter. Fortunately, Jari Anitkainen &  Zander Watt for Most Strokes of 10 and Harry Lopez for Monster Putter of 43 were there to keep Dennis company.

Dennis however was to have the last laugh winning Most Improved and recovering his fine on the day. First Sandy on the day went to Richard Mau for his effort hole 6 whilst Chris Lever birdied his first to win First Birdie. Low Putts went to Aljosja Van Dorssen for his effort of 28 putts on the day whilst the best round of the day was by Tim Knight for his 75 gross and 68 net.

After a week’s hiatus, the Wymer clan were back dominating C Grade results again this week with Ric Wymer claiming the honours for his net 70. Pieter Nielen-Groen was Low Net B whilst Arne Tjaden surprised the scorer with his card and was awarded Low Net A although a later recap had Axel Hertzke as the A grade winner.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here.

Schedule Change: Rancamaya Tee Set versus D.O.G.S.

Whilst the schedule page needs to be updated, we wish to inform everyone that our popular event with D.O.G.S. at Rancamaya has been moved back a week to the week-end of 25th/26th May. As usual, we will be making arrangements with the hotel to secure accommodation for the week-end as well as hosting a BBQ party on Saturday evening. Mark Johnson is kindly coordinating with the hotel and once the rates are confirmed we will be sending out the information and booking arrangements to both societies.

The reason for the change in date is due to the heavy coring which will take place at Cengkareng from 20th May and thanks to their advance notice of this, we are able to move our Monthly Medal up 1 week and accommodate both events.

After the post match presentations, you are invited to decamp from BSD to De la Mexicana which is run by the family of Tee Setter Axel Hertzke and is located only 5 minutes from the golf course: always a good end to the day so please join us if you can.

Maps to the restaurant will be available at BSD.

Sunday 10th March 2017 Padang Modern

Your scribe has unlocked the secrets of Flickr’s new access policies, basically they do not like window’s browser any more, and now we can belatedly bring you the report from last Sunday.

The Day

Although the sign-ups were a little lower than normal through Saturday, a flurry of late registrations and few just arriving on the day boosted our numbers to a reasonably healthy 32 Tee Setters last Sunday.

We have had some issues finding a compatible schedule with Modern resulting in several cancellations last year but this does not detract from us wishing to come and enjoy the proactive service the management and starter seek to offer as well the subtle challenge Modern’s course provides. This visit was no different with the starter moving us to a 5 hole mini-shot gun shortly before tee off enabling us to get off all together …. although the group 1st off 1 was a little bemused by the sight of the field driving past them as they prepared to tee off.

A cloudy but otherwise relatively dry day enabled the newly positioned first groups to go round in under 4 hours but with some wet patches on the fairways making the ground soft and thick rough making playing conditions more difficult, there were longer rounds recorded as some adapted to the challenges of the course and perhaps shaking off some golf rust.

A warm Tee Set welcome to Steven Bowhill, Ryan McClure and Connor Herron whilst it was a pleasure to welcome back  Steve Sutton after 256 weeks and Ryan McPhee after a more modest 42 weeks. We look forward to seeing you out again soon.

A big thank you to Ric and Lis Wymer for managing the day and photos are here.

The Play

A Booby Prize trifecta this week with Ryan McClure taking home Most Strokes (15), Monster Putter (54) and a skirt. The skirts were a “Mac” attack with Mr McClure being joined by Andrew Mackin. Most Improved went to Rosie Putri with 7.

Lots of multiple winners today but as with the 1 fine rule, only 1 prize per person. Simon Oxley took home Low Putts for his 26 but also recognized for the only Sandy Par recorded whilst Tim Knight won Low Gross for his 84 off the stick. Arthur Mallari was awarded First Birdie for his effort on hole 12.

Our Low Net winners on the day were Mark Johnson (A:76), Aljosja Van Dorssen (B:76) and James Stuart (C:73).

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here.

Jakarta Inter-League: Calling all interested Players

After many years of being hosted by Jagorawi Golf and Country Club, the 2019 JIL season will get on the way on 24th March 2019 at a new venue, Riverside. As in 2018, Tee Set will hold its weekly event on the JIL Sundays at the same course and we will field 1 team from registered players to compete for the Society in JIL. Usually we have requests for Tee Set to help fill out one or more of the teams so we can give more opportunities to play than just the 8 required to fill our team on any given week.

This year, we are appointing a new Captain, Simon Oxley, with the hope he can galvanize our team to victory and recover the JIL Cup last won in 2015. Simon would love to hear from any player interested to play in JIL and represent Tee Set so if you are able to answer the call, please contact him directly via whatsapp on +62 811 1201 378.

Next Up: Padang Modern Sunday 10th March 12pm

Ever popular for competitions which unfortunately tend to run into the afternoon tee times, our schedule at Padang Modern is therefore always subject to change and last year saw us visiting there less often than we initially scheduled. However, as a former host of our Monthly Medal, we are always pleased to head back when we can find a gap in their competition Sundays and so this week sees us back out west to Modern for the first time in 6 months.

We are always well looked after and have an enjoyable round so please come and join us if you are free. Tee time is 12.00pm and the cost, including cart, is Rp850,000. If you are interested to join us please sign up here to register

Sunday 3rd March 2019 Gading Raya

The Day

Sunday saw most of us awoken by heavy thunderstorms and with reports of the early morning starters at Gading Raya being held up by the weather, many pictured a wet day and a slow round.

However, reality could not have been much further from our initial concerns as the storms abated as we were arriving and the morning golfers had mostly given up and gone home before the course re-opened. The 32 keen Tee Setters who made it out to Gading Raya this week were therefore to enjoy an early tee off, an almost empty course in front of them and an excellent dry afternoon under broken cloudy skies. We were round in about 4 hours and all finished by 5pm allowing us to enjoy some refreshments and still be home early.

Gading Raya has excellent drainage, so the greens and fairways played remarkably well despite the down pour they had endured over-night. Our appreciation to the management at Gading for looking after us and to Jens Roestel who acted as chief coordinator to ensure we were well taken care of on the day.

4 newcomers on the day with Seunghwan Baek, Michael Paulo, Chris Hunter and Malcolm Hines all been given a warm Tee Set welcome. We also welcomed back 2017 Match Play winner Jari Antikainen after 63 weeks. We look forward to seeing you all out again soon.

Many thanks to Beby for handling all the registrations and scoring on the day and photos of the day can be found here.

The Play

The fast round and early completion of scoring caught a few coming in late to the prize-giving after their showers and so the skirt was out more often than usual despite only 4 “winners” this week: Zander Watt, Rudie Basson, Sungyoung Chung and Tan Chee Hwa. With Most Stokes also, Zander did a 2-for with the Monkey which then made its way to Harry Lopez for his Monster Putter effort of 42 putts.

First Par for Handicaps =>30 went on hole 1 to Andrew Shaw whilst First Birdie went on hole 2 to Jens Roestel. Most Improved was Laurie O’Connor with 15 and Roger Finnie was Low Putts with 28.

First Sandy went to Graham Parsonage for his effort on hole 12 whilst Low Gross was Tim Knight after his 79 off the stick.

Our Low Net winners on the day were Richard Mau (71), Dan Javier (74) and Lis Wymer (70). Congratulations to all the winners and detailed results are here.

Tee Set Match Play

Last week-end was the end of the bracket placement round and 3 matches remained unreported as of 3rd March and therefore will have our usual adjudication rules applied to determine who goes into which bracket for the knock-out phase of the competition.

The first knock-out game has already been completed with Roger Finnie winning 4&3 against Rudie Basson yesterday at Gading Raya. Please check out the Match Play page on our website for your next opponent; matches to be completed by 21st April 2019.

Sunday 24th February 2019 Cengkareng

The DayWeek 2 of our west Jakarta swing saw 42 Tee Setters take the relatively short and quick trip towards the airport as we visited one of our favourite venues, Cengkareng Golf Club. A lot to play for this week with Eclectic IX coming to a conclusion and as usual on the last Sunday of the month, our Monthly Medal.

After a couple of weeks of wet courses, the President announced before the round that we would play lift, clean and place for the first time this year but we were to go out and enjoy a relatively firm course under bright sunshine albeit that there was not as much run as usual.

Our only draw back on the day was the very slow round taking over 5 1/2 hours due to a very busy course in front of us; an usual experience for us at Cengkareng but it did give us all time to socialize on the course whilst admiring the fine fashion choices of some of our players recently returned from trips to Thailand.

2 new comers joined us on the day with Mikko Heinonen and Chung Sung Young both getting a warm Tee Set welcome.

Many thanks to VP Ric Wymer for acting as our scorer straight after coming off the course due to the absence of our secretary and thank you to Craig Edwards for again helping with the registrations before, and the scoring after, the round. Pictures of the day can be found here.

The Play

A day of extremes of scoring with no less than 23 players, more than half the field, qualifying for a fine. Our list of 10 players tying for Most Strokes of 10 on a hole made the treasurer very happy and added to the 12 skirts recorded on the day. Almost lost amongst the photo taking and merriment was Monster Putter Sang Young Park for his 45 strokes on the greens to take home the “triple crown” of fines.

The harvest of fines compensated us for some ties in the skill prizes with Indar Dhaliwal, Michael Mueller and Marcelo de Jesus all sharing Most Improved on 8 whilst Fernando Gaggino and Richard Mau shared 1st Birdie on hole 1. First Sandy went to Craig Edwards for his effort on hole 5. Low Putts went to Jens Roestel for an impressive 25 strokes only on the greens.

Low Gross was awarded to Tim Knight for his 79 off the stick whilst Low Net Prizes went to Efsi Hayati (66), Aljosja Van Dorssen (71) and Matt Otto (66) in A, B and C Grades respectively. Our Monthly Medal skill prizes were won by newcomer Chung Sung Young for NTP and stalwarts Simon Oxley and Rosie Tjaden for Long Drives.

Lorenzo Marengo was belatedly presented with his January Monthly Medal and also was our winner of Eclectic IX which concluded on Sunday; his Eclectic score of 53 just being enough to hold off Eclectic VII winner James Ross, Richie Tiblani and the hard charging Lis Wymer who tied for 2nd on 55. Lis was however our big winner on the day as she took home the Monthly Medal after a best ever round of 88 which netted her 45 points, just pipping Matt Otto who recorded 43 points on the day.

Lis was presented with the new shield and her medal by Ric. Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results can be found here.

Tee Set Match Play: Last week for 1st round matches

Sunday saw 3 more matches completed with Matt Otto winning 3&1 over Simon Oxley in a high quality game, Richie Tiblani beating the Singing President Craig Ewers 5&4 and Simon Reynolds prevailing 2up against 2018 Match Play runner-up Santi Miller.

A reminder to send your results into James Ross by email and to remaining 8 players to arrange for your matches to be completed by next Sunday, 3rd March, or we will adjudicate the results in accordance with the rules published.
