Next Up: Cengkareng Sunday 24th February 2019 12pm Monthly Medal and Eclectic IX Final Round

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2019.

With the current shield being full, we have ordered a new one thanks to the kind sponsorship of Geoff Thwaites and Kojo and expect to have it on hand this week to present to our Monthly Medalist along with the new medals.

This week will also be the final round (finally after 6 months!) of Cycle IX of the Tee Set Eclectic. Several players made a big move in Round 3 but our early leaders, January Medalist Lorenzo Marengo and Eclectic VII Champion James Ross, still hold a slender lead at the top of the standings as they seek to wrestle the trophy from current holder, Amol Singhal. To check out the standings and your hole by hole score you can look at the Eclectic page on our website.

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp850,000 walking please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng management have purchased a limited number of golf carts. These are priced at Rp55ok a cart so if you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.

Tee Set Match Play

We have 2 more matches presently scheduled this week which will bring us up to 11 of the scheduled 16 matches completed. A reminder to the remaining 10 players that there are less than 2 weeks left to complete your matches which are due to be finished by 3rd March.

Please contact your opponent and schedule the matches so they can be finished on time; as always, all results by email to James Ross please so he can officially record the outcome and allocate you to the correct bracket for the first knock out round.

Sunday 17th February 2019 Kedaton

The Day

Kedaton is one of those courses we visit once a year and perhaps a slightly unfavourable scheduling in recent years has resulted in lower numbers than we normally see, therefore clouding its popularity a little unfairly. With an earlier date in the calendar, a strong turnout of 40 players joined us this week and most enjoyed an excellent day out.

The heavy rain over recent weeks left the course slightly soft in places (note to Prez to think about winter rules!) but otherwise we were to enjoy great weather and a quick round. First groups were finished by 3.30pm and there was plenty of time to enjoy the excellent food although some took advantage to slip away early to enjoy the late afternoon elsewhere. Many requests to consider a second visit to Kedaton reflected the positive experience that most players had and one we shall keep in mind if a slot arises later in the year.

3 newcomers recorded on the day as Jussi Ohranen, Harry Lopez and Brad McCaughan were welcomed to Tee Set and our welcome backs included Robert Watt after 131 weeks and Kalli-Erik Penttila & John Stevens after 9 months. We look forward to seeing again soon.

Many thanks to Wina Nugraha for organizing the course and securing a rate lower than we paid in 2018. Thank you also to VP Ric Wymer for managing the scoring on the day, ably assisted by Wina and Lis, and for conducting the prize giving.

Perhaps the busy effort after the round meant that Ric overlooked one important result … later shared to those remaining. Congratulations to Lis for securing the household honours for the first time! Pictures of the day are here.

The Play

As usual, scores at or under net par were few and far between with only 3 players achieving this and the soft conditions definitely challenged the shorter hitters as the course played longer and slower than normal. The 1,100 yards between red and blue also gave us a good harvest of skirts with Alastair Livingston, Detlef Bluemke, Eric Mary, Paul Daud, Werner Muchitsch and William Daniel all contributing their fines although only Eric was there for the obligatory photo. Monster Putter went to newcomer Jussi Ohranen after 48 putts whilst Most Strokes of 15 on a hole went to Werner Muchitsch. Werener also won Most Improved of 9 whilst Robert Watt was awarded First Birdie for his effort on hole 8.

Despite missing out on 2 count-backs, President Roger Finnie had a 3rd banker which was First Sandy on hole 4 whilst Gary Mond’s hot putter streak on the back nine saw him secure Low Putts after an incredible 24 strokes on the greens. Low Gross went to Simon Oxley for his best of the day 80 off the stick.

Our low net winners were Andrew Waite (71), Lis Wymer (73) and Indar Dhaliwal (78).

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here.

New Alignment of Handicap bands for Grade Prizes

Tee Set historically recognizes a Low Net winner each week and at the outset this was a single award from all players present on the day. Some years ago, with playing numbers increasing, it was decided to split the players into 3 groups (A, B & C) based on handicap bands such that 3 players each week had the opportunity to be recognized for their good play and win a Low Net prize. At that time, the bands for each prize were determined based on the playing handicaps of regular players such that the pool of players in A, B or C Grade were roughly equivalent in number.

It has been sometime since the bands were reviewed and so your Committee, with the help of our Web-Guy Keith Miller, has undertaken a review of this. Our analysis of recent events, covering approximately 1/3 of all rounds played in Tee Set in the last year, indicates that the average Tee Set player is playing off a slightly lower handicap than when the grading bands were initially determined. This most likely reflects both better play from our long standing members, our congratulations for achieving that and long may it continue :- ), and that Tee Set is attracting new players who have on average lower handicaps than the historical Tee Set mix; also a positive reflection on Tee Set’s attraction to new social golfers in Jakarta.

As a result of this evolution, the number of players in B Grade is now disproportionately high and in C Grade disproportionately low most weeks. A Grade is roughly proportionate in numbers to 1/3 of the overall players with handicaps on a weekly basis. The Committee has therefore decided to tweak the handicap bands applying to each pool of players by grade so as to address this in-balance and provide an equitable opportunity to win the Low Net prize for all players irrespective of the Grade they are allocated to.

Effective from this week’s Monthly Medal players will be grouped as follows:

A Grade: playing handicaps of 0 t0 14

B Grade: playing handicaps of 15 to 20

C Grade: playing handicaps of 21 and above

New players without a Tee Set handicap will continue to be allocated a 0 handicap and will not be included in the bands for net play prizes.

For those interested, the average playing handicap in the rounds analyzed for the above exercise was 19 and a straw analysis done by your President (so not as scientific!) on data from around 3 years ago showed the average to be around a 22 handicap.

Tee Set Match Play

With Roger Finnie winning 3&2 against Craig Edwards, Wina Nugraha wining a coin toss after finishing all square with Matthew Powell and Andrew Waite winning 3&1 over Ric Wymer, 8 of our scheduled 16 matches have now been completed in the bracket determining first round. A reminder to the rest of the players that there are 2 weeks only left to complete your matches which are due to be finished by 3rd March.

Please contact your opponent and schedule the matches so they can be finished on time; as always, all results by email to James Ross please so he can officially record the outcome and allocate you to the correct bracket for the first knock out round.

Next Up: Kedaton Sunday 17th February 2019

KedatonSunday sees Tee Set begin its own 4 week “West Jakarta” swing as we visit one of those courses which we tend to go to only once a year, Kedaton Golf & Country Club.

Although a little further down the Tangerang -Merak  Toll road at KM 31, it is set amongst a nice development and is usually in great condition.

charmingSome wide fairways allow you to open up your arms with the driver but there are also canals down the side of many holes to catch errant drives; together with some large greens we usually see that a score around Net Par will put you in contention. On our last visit the pro shop was sparsely stocked so make sure you bring enough ammunition….

Thanks to Wina Nugraha, our fixture Secretary, we have secured an excellent rate which is also lower than last year: Rp750,000 including cart.

Our start time is at 11.30AM so we can be finished and off home in good time. Sign up here to join to fun this week and then read on.

***** IMPORTANT WARNING AND ADVICE *****

The one tricky thing about getting to Kedaton is making sure that you take the correct turn off from the Merak Tol heading West, with the bleached bones of those who miss it generally only found several days after their mistake.

Be prepared to take the far left toll booth, and ONLY the far left toll booth at Km 31, otherwise you WILL NOT be able to get across the toll to Kedaton but instead will be doomed  to wander the Western Badlands for eternity.

If you are taxi-ing then keep a close eye on your driver and guide him as necessary. They are likely not to know this detail and are best served by you paying for the additional 20km to the next U-turn and back

Upcoming Events…

For those wanting to get their week-end rolling on Saturday night, our very own Singing President, Craig Ewers, and his band will be playing at Start Deli on Saturday night.

It is sure to be a relaxed and chilled out night.

Ken Runyon and his team at GSE have put together a fun family event at Matoa which will be held on 28th April.

Please see the attached flyer for details and contact Ken and his team for more information if you are interested to join.

Perhaps a more couples themed week-end, Easter week-end sees Geoff Thwaites host the ever popular Bandung Bash.

Please contact Geoff for more information and to sign up if you are interested to join.

Tee Set Schedule & Handicapping Update

On the scheduling front, the Jakarta Inter-League committee has decided to move the venue of 2019’s matches to Riverside and so the schedule is updated accordingly with some ensuing changes to other weeks. It means, for now, that Jagorawi disappears from our schedule but we are working with their management to find a couple of suitable dates to include it as a regular Sunday visit. Please visit the schedule page for the updated plans albeit understanding that this is always subject to change….

Regarding handicaps, with the high overlap of players between DOGs and Tee Set, together with the DOGs Committee, we have decided to simplify the keeping and posting of handicaps for the benefit of both sets of members by merging our handicap systems effective from next week. All DOGS and Tee Set weekly events will automatically be posted by our Secretary once reported meaning only rounds played by members outside of these 2 schedules need to be separately reported to us to maintain your handicaps at the correct index.

We have therefore renamed the database “Jakartagolf” and updated the connections in the website. For those who had an automatic connection set up for your personal handicap report you will need to update the connection to continue to link to your up to date information… please see Roger Finnie at a Sunday event if you need help with this.

Sunday 10th February 2019 Matoa Nasional

The Day

Although sign-ups were quiet through Friday, a late flurry of players joining saw 36 Tee Setters arrive at a sunny and very dry Matoa this Sunday. With the course being relatively quiet and the weather remaining very kind for this time of year, we were treated to an excellent day of golf and a quick round. Many of us were finished before 4pm and able to enjoy some late afternoon refreshments without being too late getting home.

As always, we were well looked after by the Matoa team with the caddies looking much more professional in their new uniforms and the course playing well in the dry conditions; only a lack of rakes, and therefore raking in bunkers, detracting for some from an otherwise enjoyable experience.

A warm Tee Set welcome to our 4 newcomers on the day: Sean Hill, Seth Peller, Shendy Walters and Prama Destiardi. We also had some long welcome backs to Wally Walters after 209 weeks and Andrew & Octa Abram after 57 weeks. We look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Many thanks to VP Ric Wymer for doing the presentations and to Beby for arranging the scoring. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

The good course conditions led to some excellent scoring with just over 25% of all players being at or below handicap. With such good scores there were little in the way of fines on the day leaving the Treasurer working hard to market the Tee Set golf shirts to top up our funds on the day. Fortunately the number of newcomers made for some brisk sales.

No skirts, not an unusual occurrence at Matoa, left only Monster Putter Renni Puri and Most Strokes “winner” Rene Jansen contributing their fines to the Tee Set coffers this week. Having “missed out” on the Most Strokes fine, Matt McGowan doubled down on his good fortune to take home Most Improved of 15 shots.

First Sandy went to Fernando Gaggino for his effort on hole 3 whilst First Birdie went to Jens Roestel who ensured he would win this by birdieing his opening hole. Low Putts went to Craig Binks for his effort of 27 putts whilst First Par for Handicaps >=30 was secured by Octa Abram for her par on hole 15.

An excellent 76 off the stick saw Fitrat Ameer win Low Gross whilst some excellent scoring of net 65, 66 and 67 saw Roger Finnie, Rudie Basson and Lis Wymer take home Low Net honours for the day in A, B & C grades, respectively.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here.

Tee Set Match-Play

This year’s competition is now in full swing with 6 first round matches already held. A result from last week not reported in the post saw Gary Mond defeat Chris Lever. This week, Rudie Basson beat Fernando Gaggino 6&5 whilst Matt McGowan won 2up over Mike Webb. Of course everyone is still in the competition as the first round results only define which bracket you fall into.

A reminder for the remaining players to please complete their first round matches by 3rd March and for all players to submit your match score by email to James Ross to officially record the result.

Sunday 3rd February 2019 Riverside

The Day

Happy New Year Tee Setters and wishing all our members a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous Year of the Pig. With this week-end proceeding CNY, numbers were potentially a little low but we had a strong turnout of 30 (note above missed 1 late arrival!) as we headed a short way down the Jagorawi Toll and challenged ourselves on the difficult Riverside course. With only 3 players at or under net handicap on the day, the difficulty of the course was reflected in the results as you can read below.

  Riverside

As always the Riverside team looked after us well and we had an early start to try and beat the rains thanks to a 5 hole mini-shot-gun start 30 minutes early. After a clear and largely sunny front 9, the thunder arrived as we reached holes 12-13 but other than a short break for lightening, we were able to finish our round in good time and with little rain.

We welcomed 2 newcomers on the day, Nick Lewis and Choi Jeon Gok and welcomed back Peng Wee Song, the GM at Riverside who joined us for the round, and Samret Raungrit after 30 weeks. Looking forward to seeing you all out again soon.

A thank you to Jens Rostel who assisted with registrations in the morning and to VP Ric Wymer who inputted all the scoring and managed the announcements afterwards.

Photos of the day can be found here.

The Play

With some challenging tee shots, to see only 2 skirts was a good effort all round and we captured a nice shot of Amol Singhal and Matthias Cosessens in the Tee Set dress up outfit. Most  Strokes went to Rudie Basson for his 11 on a hole and Monster Putter to Choi Jeon Gok for her 43 strokes on the green.  11 was the magic number for Keith Gorman, Most Improved, and Andrew Shaw, First Par for handicaps >=30 but he was to receive another prize. First Sandy for his effort on on hole 3 went to Nick Lewis and First Birdie secured on hole 5 won Arthur Mallari that award.

Low Putts with 29 was awarded to Laurie O’Connor whilst President Roger Finnie and Samret Raungrit shared Low Gross for their rounds of 86. Our  Low New winners were Andrew Shaw (C: 76), Mike Webb (B: 68) and Jens Roestel (A: 75)

Congratulations to all our winners and the detailed results are here.

The first 3 match play games were also played on Sunday with Amol Singhal defeating Tony Franco, Aurelie Neufkens defeating Keith Gorman and defending Champion Jens Rosetel defeating Matthias Coessens. Please do not forget to submit your results by email directly to James Ross otherwise its not official!

Green fees of Rp775,000 including a shared cart with a tee time of 12.00pm: please be there around 11.00am as we should have a shot-gun start so it takes a little more time to get bags/players organized and out to the respective holes

Sunday 27th January 2019: Cengkareng Monthly Medal

The Day

The high risk of rain under the overcast skies was not enough to deter us from heading to golf on Sunday with an impressive turnout of 57 Tee Setters arriving at Cengkareng for our first monthly medal of 2019.

As usual we were well looked after by the Cengkareng team in the clubhouse before and after play and our round headed off pretty much on schedule despite the course being busy. Some drops of rain as we started saw many get their wet- weather gear out on the 1st tee box, but we were not to see any rain through-out the round despite the threatening clouds. With the winds being up and the course being wet following the week’s rain, play was a little slow in some parts but we were all finished in good time to enjoy the evening in the clubhouse as we performed the prize giving and match play drawing.

5 newcomers were given a warm Tee Set welcome with Matt Kelly, John Bridgwood, Jacopo Rigamonti, Ha Tae Gil and Elliot Hawkins all joining us for the first time. A welcome back to a weekly event after 198 weeks to Jasper Bouman and after 69 weeks to Max Strawhorn. We hope to see you all out again soon.

Many thanks to Craig Edwards for helping with the morning registrations and to Beby for managing all the scoring on Sunday and the photos of the day are here.

The Play

Despite the wet conditions, several players turned in some excellent scores but as usual Cengkareng can catch the errant golf shots and punish your scores. Hakim Moui headed the list of Most Strokes with his 12 on a hole to get his photo taken with the Monkey whilst Matt Kelly was awarded Monster Putter for his 40 strokes on the greens. As usual a long list of skirts with Arthur Mallari, Dan Javier, Eric Mary, Indar Dhaliwal, Jim Berndt, Joseph D’Cruz, Matthias Coessens, Michael Mueller and Mike Riley all getting the opportunity of a photo with the Tee Set dress up bag. Dan Javier was able to come up and recover his fine as he was awarded Low Putts after his 28 putts on the day.

Kim Pham had the First Par for handicaps >= 30 on hole 9 whilst Most Improved went to Jasper Bouman who was 11 strokes better on the back 9. Tim Evershed won First Sandy for his effort on hole 3 whilst a birdie on hole 2 saw VP Ric Wymer win First Birdie. Although eclipsed by the excellent round of our Monthly Medal winner, President Roger Finnie was awarded Low Gross for his round of 80 off the stick.

Low Net winners were Richie Tiblani (69) in A Grade on a count-back from Shawn Berg, the evergreen Geoff Thwaites (67) in B Grade and Riahana Ariestya (69) in C Grade. For the Monthly Medal skill prizes the Long Drive awards went to Elliot Hawkins and Reni Riley whilst Werner Muchitsch was Nearest the Pin.

The first winner of the new Monthly Medal Shield and our first Monthly Medalist of 2019 is Lorenzo Marengo who shot a best of the day 78 gross to record 46 stableford points with our sponsor, Geoff Thwaites second on 41 points. In lieu of our new shield arriving, Geoff was on hand to present the old one for the photo to Lorenzo.

Congratulations to Lorenzo and all our winners on the day and the detailed results can be found here.

Tee Set Match-Play 2019

The 2019 Tee Set Match Play Championship registrations were closed on Sunday at the conclusion of the Monthly Medal. The Match-Play Supremo, James Ross, organized a random drawing of the first round matches to determine players’ placement into the 2 knock-out brackets.

Details have been sent to all registered players and can also be found here on the Match Play page of the website.

Placement round matches to be completed by 3rd March 2019.

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2019.

Our current shield was filled at the last Monthly Medal of 2018 and a new one is being acquired thanks to the continuing sponsorship of Kojo and Geoff Thwaites. Thanks Geoff!.

These are priced at Rp55ok a cart so if you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengakreng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.

Sunday 20th January 2019 Imperial Klub Golf

The Day

An overcast and windy day greeted the 28 Tee Setters who headed west to Imperial this week and in addition to concerns on the potential for a stormy interruption to our round, many players arriving noted the large group heading out ahead of us with the potential for a slow round. In the end, we headed out at 12pm as planned with the round proceeding smoothly and the weather also held off so there were no interruptions for rain or storms. All in all, thanks to the smooth organization of the Imperial team and the efforts of the marshals, we finished in good time and were able to enjoy a few refreshments in the club-house whilst a glorious sunset came across the 18th green.

One newcomer this week, Andy Doran who joined us as he was passing through to Tokyo and a welcome back after 99 weeks to Des Wright. We hope to see you both again sooner rather than later.

Thank you to Beby for doing the scoring and VP Ric Wymer for the presentations. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

Imperial is a lay-out which rewards good play but can also catch-out the unwary with several tricky holes and steep banks in front of many greens. Our long list of competitors for Most Strokes, 1/3 of the field, attests to this with Matt McGowan heading the pack after a 15 on a hole. Almost enough to secure him Most Improved but James Ross was to take this prize with a back nine 15 strokes better than his outward half. We all made the most of good greens so no Monster Putter this week, but a healthy list of skirts made sure the Treasurer was happy on the day; thank you to Arne Tjaden, Eric Mary, Geoff Thwaites, King Tirto and Pascal Bekaert for their contributions.

Missing his fine for Most Strokes also meant Matt missed out on his First Birdie prize. Low Putts went to Leon Bivolaru who chipped in twice to record only 26 strokes on the greens. Arne Tjaden recovered his fine with First Sandy on hole 5 as did Pascal Bekaert for his First Par for handicaps >=30 for his effort also on hole 5.

Low Gross went to President Roger Finnie for another consistent round of 80 whilst Low Net went to Len Ogembo (A grade 71), Andrew Waite (B grade 72) and King Tirto (C grade 74).

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here.

Tee Set Match-Play 2019: Last Call

The 2019 Tee Set Match Play Championship is now open for registrations and sign ups close this Sunday.  Games will start the first week of February so we will hold a drawing for the placement round at the monthly medal this Sunday, 27 January 2019.

Please submit your details on the form here to join the competition to try to wrest the Ric Wymer Cup from current Champion, Jens Roestel.

Next up: Monthly Medal Cengkareng 27th January 2019 & Eclectic IX Round 3

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2019.

Our current shield was filled at the last Monthly Medal of 2018 and a new one is being acquired thanks to the continuing sponsorship of Kojo and Geoff Thwaites. Thanks Geoff!.

This week will also be the third  round of Cycle IX of the Tee Set Eclectic and an opportunity for you to down a first marker in the hope to wrestle the trophy from current holder, Amol Singhal.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng management have recently purchased 8 golf carts. These are priced at Rp55ok a cart so if you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengakreng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.
