Sunday 13th January 2019: Emeralda

The Day

A slightly overcast morning greeted the 28 Tee Setters who headed down the toll to enjoy the excellent Emeralda course on Sunday. With the traffic being a little heavier than recently, players were arriving right up until tee time which resulted in some confusion with the starter who then wished to turn our 2 tee start into a mini-shot-gun. However, our original plan stood and so our 7 groups headed out in good time for our 11.30am start.

Our early start was fortunate as thunder threatened through most of the round and we had some rain for a few holes; however, the lightening was never close enough for the siren to sound and interrupt the round, much to the frustration of some of the caddies who seemed quite keen to go inside as soon as it started to be wet. It also meant we were finished before the heavens truly opened and drenched the course. The heavy rain played havoc with the traffic on the toll with no less than 5 accidents between junction 19 and Jakarta – some therefore chose to rush off but most chose to use the time to enjoy a couple more refreshments after the prize giving and enjoy a relatively smoother ride home once the main accidents had been cleared.

Lots of discussion on the new rules and thank you to Simon for demonstrating his new knee high drop technique when on difficult ground!!. Some rules pointers to be added to our rules page shortly for those wishing to read up further.

One new-comer this week with Paul Jocis joining us for the first time and being given a warm Tee Set welcome. 2 notable welcome backs for Mitchell Wiener and Alexander Watt after 215 weeks and 34 weeks, respectively.

In the absence of our Secretary, thank you to Matthew, Laurie, Jens and Bill for helping out with all the administration and prize-giving.

The Play

Emeralda is a picturesque layout rewarding good play and with greens a little faster than we normally see; the result being we get quite a spread of results and the scores returned on Sunday were reflective of this. 6 players were in the frame for Most Strokes with Rod Ritson heading the list for his 12 on a hole whilst Monster Putter was awarded to Christopher Chipman after his 48 strokes on the greens, heading off 3 others tied on 41 putts. 4 skirts on the day with Eric Mary, Mitchell Wiener and Tim Henssen joining Chistopher for the photo.

Clearly having a better back nine after getting used to the President’s spare clubs, Mitchell Wiener recovered his fine by taking home Most Improved of 15 strokes. First (& only) Par for Handicaps >=30 went to Andrew Shaw for his effort on hole 4 whilst Jens Roestel took home First Sandy for is par on hole 2. First Eagle went to Len Ogembo who pitched in on hole 18 whilst Low Putts went to President Roger Finnie after his return of 28 putts.

Returning to the scene of his excellent 74 last year, Matthew Powell had another good round recording a gross 83 and win Low Gross. Low Net honours went to Richie Tiblani (A grade 70), Chris Lever (B Grade 67) and Rod Ritson (C Grade 85).

Detailed results are here.

R.I.P. Jack Sanford

Below is the Obituary of John Nilson Sanford (1941-2018) and a link to a message board is at the bottom.

John “Jack” Nilson Sanford passed away on December 31, 2018 after a courageous 60-day battle against a deadly bacterium that infected his lungs. He was an extraordinary man, with a bigger than life energy, one of a kind voice, and a generous heart that touched lives around the world. Jack was a gentleman, well respected and loved by many. He was an adventurer who lived by the beat of his own drum, forging his own way and never settling for less. Wherever he went he had wisdom to share because whether he succeeded or not, he always gave it his very best.

Jack was born on September 15, 1941 in Youngstown, Ohio to George Sanford Sr. and Jeanette Nilson Sanford. As a child he loved the outdoors and many sports, such as sailing, skiing, and fishing. At the early age of 15 years old, when visiting his Uncle Bill Hudson and Aunt Roxie in Texas, he found his love for the oilfield that became his lifelong passion. From that point forward, eager to learn, he spent his summers working on various oil rigs. Jack attended Texas Tech University where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Petroleum Engineering paving his way for the future.

With an interest in living abroad and thirst for exploring the world over the next 10 years, he took jobs in the oilfield in many places including Africa, Middle East, and Europe. Ready to bring his knowledge back stateside, in 1979 Jack started Diversified Petroleum Consultants and in 1982 with his brother, George Sanford, built Texas Turnkey Operators, both companies became a recognized success.

Then with a shift in the oil markets Jack headed back overseas to Indonesia where he created a home and worked for another 20 years with various oil companies throughout Southeast Asia and the Middle East, including Exxon in Doha, Qatar. Throughout the years when Jack wasn’t working you would find him with family and friends either skiing in Aspen, in Hawaii on the sea where loved to spend his days fishing for Blue Marlin, or golfing in Bali and other places around the globe.

Ultimately it was the time he spent connecting with everyone, the laughter and memories that were shared doing these activities that mattered most to him. He built close friendships across multiple countries, inspired many with his positive outlook on life, and became a legend to all those fortunate enough to know him. At age 70, he returned stateside to work with his brother as a Principal in Universal Corrosion Specialist until his passing. He was a devoted father, brother and true friend. Jack is survived by his daughter Cassandra Sanford-Rosenthal, stepdaughter Kristen Karlisch, and brother George Sanford.

A Celebration of Jack’s Life will take place on January 17, 2019 at Parkway United Methodist Church, 5801 New Territory Blvd., Sugar Land, TX 77479, at 3:30pm with a reception to follow at Black Hawk Country Club, 12610 FM1464, Richmond, TX 77407. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to the Mayo Clinic online at

https://philanthropy.mayoclinic.org/donateMC

designated to the Center for Biomedical Discovery in Memory of John Sanford.

  1. It is fluid so please check it from time to time as we make changes based on feedback from courses on competition days or other potential complications to our expected smooth rounds. Your President is happy to receive feedback on potential new courses to be added to the schedule should slots open up during the year;

  3. In addition to the week-end at Rancamaya when we have our BBQ and match with The DOG’s, we are coordinating 3 other potential over-night events. Firstly, a visit to Gunung Geulis in July. Secondly, following on from the success of our inaugural visit in 2018, a return to Finna in Surabaya and thirdly, a new trip to Merapi, Jogjakarta. The dates of these latter 2 events are to be scheduled but please look out for more details as we fine-tune them with our tour masters, Craig Ewers and Axel Hertzke.

Sunday 6th January 2019: Gading Raya

The Day

Our first game of the New Year saw us return to Gading Raya where we welcomed 45 Tee Setters on what was a dry and sunny day. It was an opportunity for several players who had just flown in to get out and stretch their legs to help get over the jet lag; none more so than birthday boy Jens Roestel and Shawn Berg who had arrived in from Germany and Canada, respectively, the evening before. Good to see everyone out after the New Year.

Although hoping for a smooth day, we had a couple of curve balls to deal with in the pre-round arrangements with firstly an accident on the toll delaying the arrival of the VP of Almost Everything along with our secretary and then the caddy master sending out some of the groups fully 45 minutes early despite 1/3 of the group had not yet arrived.

Whilst the administration coped as normal, this meant there was long gap between the front and back of the field and so the post-round gathering was a little quieter than normal. After the scoring was collated, several headed over the DOCKS where we enjoyed some food and drinks kindly laid on by Jens to celebrate his birthday.

4 newcomers welcomed on the day and a warm Tee Set welcome was given to Tim Evershed, Dominic Wong, Jack Harkness and Ben Jenkins. We also gave a warm welcome back to Kathy Scalabre and Arnold Castillon who were both back after 7 months away. We look forward to welcoming you all again soon.

Thank you’s on the day to Jens for his hospitality, Beby for managing the scoring, Craig Edwards for the registrations and VP Ric Wymer for almost everything else needed to make the day run smoothly. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

Whilst relatively flat, Gading Raya has some tricky rough, soft fringes and undulating greens which can reward good play and catch-out the unwary. The scores today reflecting these characteristics as they do during most visits.

Monster Putter was a close run thing with Tim Evershed just pipping Tim Henssen with 44 putts on the day. Tim however was not to escape as he was fined for his skirt along with VP Ric Wymer and Stefan Thiele. Unsurprisingly perhaps, Shawn Berg ran out of steam on the back 9 which included a 10 to share Most Strokes along with Tan Chee Hua. Most Improved went to Nick Gleeson who tightened his game up to come home 8 strokes better whilst Kim Pham secured first Par for handicaps >=30 with her effort on hole 4.

On the skill prizes, First Sandy went to Lorenzo Marengo for his effort on hole 1 where Chris Chipman also secured First Birdie. Completing the trio was Keith Gorman for his Low Putts of 27.

Low Gross was awarded to both President Roger Finnie and Tee Set Champion Richard Mau as their gross scores of 80 could not be separated by a simple count-back. In the Low Net category, Gading Raya specialist Fernando Gaggino was back to secure A Grade after a net 69 with Arthur Mallari (67) and Kathy Scalabre (70) taking Grades B & C, respectively.

Congratulations to all our winners.

Next Up: Gading Raya Sunday 6th January 2019

A Happy New Year to all Tee Setters and we begin 2019 with a visit to Gading Raya followed by a post round event at The DOCKS where we will be treated to a couple of free barrels in celebration of the New Year and the birthday of Tee Set Match-Play Champion, Jens Roestel.

Gading Raya has been one of Tee Set’s favourites and deservedly so with an excellent course and good facilities being complemented by relatively easy access for many Tee Setters.

Tee times off 1 & 10 at 11.30am have been confirmed along with the attractive pricing of Rp815,000 with carts.

Lots of good reasons therefore to sign up here and we look forward to seeing all who can join us on Sunday.

Whilst we are working on the full 2019 schedule, the next few weeks have already been confirmed as below.

In Memory: Jack Sanford

We have learnt this week of the recent passing back in Houston of Jack Sanford, aged 77 years.

Jack was one of the Tee Set originals and even after retiring from his job here, he would come back regularly to Indonesia and play with Tee Set and in the Bali Classic.

We will share some more words on Jack shortly as well as any other details we can get on arrangements. In the meantime, our commiserations to all his family and we will be raising a toast to Jack on Sunday.

Sunday 30th December 2018 Emeralda

The Day

For our final round of 2018 we went down to Emeralda and the 30 Tee Setters who joined enjoyed a great round of golf with the weather and rather empty course ensuring we had an excellent day out.

The continuing winds made for some interesting shot selection on a challenging layout but with the fairways and greens in good condition those striking the ball well were able to return some good scores.

A long welcome back to Kai Hertzke, bother of Axel, who was back with us after an absence of 151 weeks and it was a pleasure to welcome back Charles Lim and Rene Jansen who had joined us for the first time last week.

A thank you to Craig Edwards for again sorting out the registrations and pairings and to Beby for inputting all the scores and handicap updates.

The Play

Mark Johnson was celebrating his birthday this weekend and we were able to call him up a couple of times during the prize giving; Firstly for his skirt where he was joined by Mike Webb, Craig Ewers and no longer skirt virgin, Arne Tjaden. Mark was back to recover his fine for his Low Putts of 29 after we had awarded Monster Putter to Kim Pham (41) and Most Strokes to Tom Grace (13).

With the Plantation course the more difficult of the 2 nines we were playing, it was not a surprise that Most Improved came from those starting on that 9 with Leon Bivolaru taking the prize with an improvement of 5 strokes. Our other skill prizes went on Hole 1 with Tan Chee Hua winning First Sandy and President Roger Finnie First Birdie.

Low Gross went to Tim Knight who shot an excellent 78 off the stick whilst our Low Net Winners were Len Ogembo in A Grade (71), Michael Mueller in B Grade (70) and Lis Wymer in C Grade (71).

Congratulations to all our winners and the detailed results are here.

23rd December 2018 Riverside

The Day

With the holiday season in full swing for most of us, we invited our friends from DOGS and Pocksia to join us for a fun 2 player better ball stableford event for our return visit to Riverside. Thank you to everyone who came out and joined us and with 45 players turning out, it made for a fun afternoon on what was an almost empty course in front of us.

As we did for last year’s event, all the registered players were divided into 2 pots based on handicaps and the pairings drawn to make the 2 player teams. Thank you to Mark Johnson and Craig Edwards for assisting with the registrations and pairings.

Once teams were drawn we headed out for our shot-gun start just after 11.15am which was fortunate because, whilst we enjoyed a windy but dry round, as we were enjoying the post game celebrations the heavens opened and blessed the course with some more rain.

PHOTO-2018-12-23-17-46-42PHOTO-2018-12-23-14-23-53

This week marked the last game, for a while at least, of regular Tee Set and DOGS player, Detlef Bluemke. We thanked Detlef for his friendship and support and wished him bon voyage as he leaves to take up a new assignment. There was of course time to capture one last skirt photo, even if we were not collecting skirts this week, with some of those who had a skirt on the day joining Detlef for the photo.

Detlef also brought along a couple of cases of refreshments so that we all stayed a little longer in the clubhouse and enjoyed a leisurely late afternoon chatting and relaxing before taking the relatively smooth ride back into town.

In the event, the top 3 teams were awarded a bottle of wine each with Arne Tjaden, Karan Khetan, Rosie Putri, Mike Webb, Al Livingston and Kim Pham (after a count back from Craig and Tim) all getting their prize. The full results are below.

A thank you also to the Riverside staff who looked after us well on the day. Photos as usual are here.

Next Up: Riverside Sunday 23rd December 2018 11.30am

Our penultimate round in 2018 sees us head down to Riverside and claim the rain check from our last visit when we got severely washed off the course.

RiversideThis Greg Norman designed course is always one of the most interesting challenges on the Tee Set schedule with the Shark’s trademark optical illusions regularly fooling the unwary.

This week we have invited our friends from the DOGS & POCKSIA to join us and we will be having a fun game together playing in 2-person team pairs. We will conduct a blind draw for teams with the lower handicap half of the field drawing a partner from the higher handicap half of the field. The drawing will be conducted at 11.00 am so we can get the pairings to the starter so please register by then. Late arrivals will be paired as they come.

Scoring on each hole for the team will be based on the better ball net score off individual handicaps, 3 lowest team scores will win the prizes on offer. All players (Tee Setter, DOGS or POCKSIA) with a current Tee Set handicap will play that handicap on the day and the remaining players will play off their DOGS/POCKSIA handicap.

Come join us for the fun and challenge of one of Jakarta’s finest courses on Sunday by signing up here as usual. Green fees of Rp525,000 including a shared cart with a tee time of 11.30pm

For those Tee Setters who are already travelling or who are busy the next couple of weeks, on behalf of the Committee we wish you and your families a joyous festive season and a Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you out on the fairways in 2019.

Xmas Charity Drive: Lombok and Palu

Thank you to all those who have generously emptied their wardrobes of old clothes so far. We are still collecting donations this week so if you have anything to donate please bring along to Riverside this week or contact Santi Miller or Roger Finnie to coordinate collection/deliveries.

Santi and Jane will be going through all the donations and creating shipments to be donated to families in both Lombok and Palu for the New Year. Thank you in advance for all your donations to support these worthy efforts.
