Next Up Gading Raya Sunday 21st October 11.30am

Gading Raya has been one of Tee Set’s favourites and deservedly so with an excellent course and good faciliites being complemented by relatively easy access for many Tee Setters.

Putting in the past the issues we had during our last visits, after a gap of 15 months, we are pleased to return to Gading Raya following the renewed commitment of the course to welcome us.

Tee times off 1 & 10 at 11.30am have been confirmed along with the more attractive pricing of Rp800,000 (was Rp950k in 2017) with carts. Additionally, as a welcome back, for 21st October’s visit only, jugs of beer after the round will be priced at Rp250,000 so we can celebrate the welcome back of Gading Raya to our roster.

Lots of good reasons therefore to sign up here and we look forward to seeing you all next week.

Although we are not making any formal arrangements this time, many will be going afterwards to enjoy some Mexican food and drinks at Casa de la Mexicana thanks to the hospitality of Axel and his family. This is becoming a new Tee Set tradition during our visits to the Serpong area and please feel welcome to join us if you are not rushing back after the game.

Jagorawi Country Club Sunday 14th October 2018

The Day

This Sunday was the final week of the JIL round robin matches and so we headed to Jagorawi for our regular Sunday game and to support the Tee Set team in their endeavours to finish a disappointing season with pride. In total, 65 players were at JGCC for the event and with Tee Setters represented in almost all teams, 31 Tee Setters joined our regular Sunday sign-up.

A smooth day on the course weather wise with JGCC in its usual good condition but with the tension of 2 teams fighting in the their respective matches to win the league, play got a little slow at times.

One new comer on the day and a warm Tee Set welcome to Walter Jardine. Walter was certainly into the Tee Set spirit from his first visit and donated a bottle for the Committee to use as a prize at a future event: many thanks to Walter for this.

With the President absent, Tee Set and JIL administration fell into the capable hands of VP Ric Wymer and many to Ric for sorting all the arrangements on the day. Pictures of the day are here.

The Play

With JIL going on we did not recognize the good or bad on the greens this week and those with fines seemed to be spared the usual photo but we do have the record for our annual statistics to show Jonathan Quek and Tan Chee Hwa as our skirt winners on the day and a 4 was tie for Most Strokes between Amol Singhal, Frank Wilson, Hakim Moui and Tan Chee Hwa.

JGCC is a tough first outing in Tee Set and after a difficult start, newcomer Walter Jardine got the hang of Jags to come home 10 strokes better and win Most Improved. First Birdie went to VP Ric Wymer and First Sandy to Matt Otto for their efforts on holes 1 and 5, respectively.

Low Gross went to John Birch for his excellent 84 off the stick whilst Low Net honours fell to Shawn Berg (72), Rudie Basson (74) and Dirk Kruip (71). Congratulations to all the winners and detailed results are here.

In the JIL, Tee Set’s team finally fired and played spoiler in the battle for top honours by defeating co-4th round leaders and home favourites, Cloggies 6-4. This left the way clear for Tin Cups to win their match and the 2018 JIL. Congratulations to Captain David Baglivo and his team who will receive their trophies at the end of season scramble on 18th November.

Gading Raya Sunday 21st October 2018 11.30am

Gading Raya has been one of Tee Set’s favourites and deservedly so with an excellent course and good faciliites being complemented by relatively easy access for many Tee Setters.

Unfortunately, after a period of being the home of our Monthly Medal, we found ourselves squeezed between a desire to increase significantly the pricing to Society golfers generally and a failure to communicate  when they had other bookings which they were prioritizing on some of the dates of our events. This came to a head in July 2017 when we found ourselves bumped by 1 1/2 hours from our scheduled tee time and then all put off the first tee. Naturally, with several courses keen to increase our visitation, we choose to arrange subsequent events elsewhere.

With a new team in place and following some discussions arranged thanks to Tee Set and Gading member, Jens Roestel, we have agreed to return next Sunday to Gading Raya after a gap of 15 months.

PS: as President Roger Finnie has just returned from a trip and missed yesterday’s event, the write-up will follow in due course after he has exchanged notes with VP Ric Wymer who kindly took care of the Tee Set arrangements.

Next Up Jagorawi Country Club 9.30am shot gun Sunday 14th October 2018

Having already secured the wooden spoon in this year’s JIL, Sunday will be the last week of the round robin matches with Tee Set’s team looking to play spoiler as they take on co-leaders and home favourites, Cloggies. As usual it is also just a regular Tee Set Sunday at one of the best maintained courses on our roster.

With an early start/finish and only a short trip down the highway there is a lot to look forward to as we visit JGCC again.

Sunday’s event is open to all Tee Set players and we will select the Inter-League team from those who have signed up to play on Sunday. JIL Tee Set Team members who have confirmed their availability are therefore requested to also sign up as usual and please bring your Green Tee Set shirt for playing in.

Start time is 9.30am as usual for the Interleague week-end and we will have a shot-gun start so please be at the course and registered for around 8.30am so we can allocate holes and groups in time to get out at 9.15am for the start.

If you are interested to join us please sign up here

Schedule changes

We have had a couple of schedule changes recently including that BSD is not available for us to visit as planned on 21st October unless we accepted a late tee time with no shot-gun. Please check out the schedule until the end of 2018 on the website.

As mentioned above, the next of these changes is next week’s game and so we have decided to head back to Gading Raya for the first time since July 2017 when we had got bumped to the back of the field due to a conflicting event which they failed to advise about. The good news is that they recognize the issue and have offered us a more attractive rate of Rp800k (versus Rp950k in 2017) and for this visit only, jugs of beer will be available at Rp250k nett. Look out for sign ups early next week and thank you to Jens Roestel for helping us with the discussions.

Rules of Golf

With the issuance of the new rules for 2019, we have created a web-page where you can access the rule book for your reading pleasure. Please click here to see the new page:

Rules of Golf

However, the rule book still runs to 240 pages and the Players Edition to 160 pages meaning those wishing to familiarize themselves in detail will still need to invest some hours to read through the rule book and understand the connection between various rules which can govern a particular situation. The Tee Set Committee has therefore enlisted the help of a couple of members to try and provide a simplified explanation to cases which may occur regularly for our members and are not likely to be rules which most players know in detail. We will also highlight the key rule changes over the course of the next few months as we build our library of advice and insights.

A thank you in advance to Tee Set Monthly Medal sponsor and golf coach, Ken Runyon, and Rudie Basson, a level 3 qualified rules official by the R&A, for their assistance in the coming months to contribute to all our knowledge of the 2019 rule book. As the articles are ready we will post them to website for you to access as needed.

BWA Pink Golf Day 24th October 2018

This popular day is almost sold out with space for 2 more teams only. Please sign up asap if you can make this event and wish to register a team. Registrations close next week.

Sunday 7th October 2018: Cengkareng Tee Set World Cup

The Day

Sunday saw us making a second visit to Cengkareng in as many weeks as we returned to play the 3rd edition of the Tee Set World Cup which, due to some changes in the calendar, was played the event as a 1 day competition this year. This proved a popular arrangement with a healthy turnout of 57 Tee Setters who were greeted by another excellent golfing day, weather wise.

With 56 players playing, we had the happy arrangement of a perfect number for 14 teams, 13 of which were hoping to rest the World Cup Trophy from the Indonesian Ladies team who have won on the previous 2 occasions we have held the event.

After the President and VP sorted out registrations and pairings, we headed out in good time as the course management advanced our tee time a little to accommodate the high turnout. The only complication to that plan was attraction of the UFC fight playing in the lounge and some groups were a little reluctant to move out on time which coupled to some slow play on our part, led to some large gaps on the course and a delay for other groups following us… a request from the course management to please be conscious of this for future visits left the President needing to apologize on behalf of the group…

Whilst most groups were self creating, we needed to pair some players together other than by their natural country affiliations and so a thank you to those players who helped us make sure all the groups were teams of 4 and potentially competitive for the day.

Our team events always attract new comers to the Tee Set family, this time was no different with 4 new comers of Roger Slangen, Ian Newnes, Hakim Moui and David Sumenap and who were all given a warm Tee Set welcome. We also see some regulars to the team events but who are not playing Tee Set week in and week out and a warm welcome back was given to Rob Nicholls, Chris Cromarty, Frank & Anna Wilson, Andreas Stokowy and Kim Pham. We look forward to seeing you all out again shortly.

Several players assisted on the day to make sure things ran smoothly; so in addition to the regular thank you to VP Ric Wymer and Beby, our appreciation to Glen, Nick and Al for their assistance at various points during the day. Photos of the day can be found here.

The Play

Although individual low net and gross prizes were not given out on the day, we did keep a full record of play for the database and the summary of the results is above and the detail here. However, as can be seen it was a day on which the ladies shone brightly, cleaning up all categories for best play on the day.

On the skill prizes, First Birdie was shared 4 ways between Daniel Gaisler, Joshua Alexander, Rosie Putri and Len Ogembo for their efforts on the first hole whilst Dirk Kruip took home First Sandy for his effort on hole 4. Santi Miller was Low Putts on 28 and First Par =>30 handicaps went to Kim Pham – both earning other prizes so not in the money for these efforts.

Surprising after a quiet night in, Brett Shields had a difficult outward nine but recovered by 13 strokes to be Most Improved…

VP & Treasurer Ric Wymer was most happy on the day with a full harvest of fines recorded. Tom Grace was the Monkey winner with Most Strokes of 14 on a hole whilst Monster Putter saw newcomer Hakim Moui and Franz Heuben share the “prize” after 45 putts on the day. Most impressive was the list of skirts with 11 as shown above and mostly captured in the photos below.

The main prizes of the day were based on the team scores and Low Gross on the day went to The Great of Britain team of Simon Oxley, Jon Pipe, Stuart Wigley and President Roger Finnie after their score of 238. Runner-up in the Low Net category, anchored by Low Net C winner Kim Pham, was team England who also featured Bruce Smart, Al Livingston and Craig Binks and recorded a score of 199. Our overall winner, unsurprisingly with both Low Gross and Low Net A scores on the day in the team, was team Srikandi: Santi Miller, Efsi Hayati, Lis Wymer and Wina Nugraha after shooting a team score of 196. This is 3rd year in a row that the team was won the World Cup so VP Ric Wymer was happy to pass the trophy over to team Captain Santi to take home.

Congratulations to all the winners and the detailed player and team scores from the World Cup are here. Many thanks to everyone who turned out on the day.

Sunday 30th September 2018: Cengkareng Monthly Medal

The Day

A somewhat later than normal report as your scribe was down with the lurgy…apologies for those looking to see their name in lights after Sunday and here you go!

Sunday was a busy golfing day across Jakarta and so our turn-out, for what is usually our most popular event each month, was a little down on numbers with finally 25 players making to Cengkareng to enjoy another good day of golf, camaraderie and excellent service.

The weather continued to be kind to us with a warm sunny day punctuated by some gentle breezes ensuring we got round in good time after heading out a little earlier than our booking.

No newcomers this week, Adile having joined as a guest previously, but we were pleased welcome back Andreas Stokowy after 55 weeks, Jon Pipe after 18 weeks and James Ross after his summer vacation.

A thank you to VP Ric Wymer who took care of registrations and the scoring again this week and after the early finish a good proportion of the players stayed behind to enjoy Cengkareng’s excellent service and margaritas whilst following the Ryder Cup progress. Pictures of the day are here as usual.

The Play

With the excellent course and weather conditions, it was not a surprise to see so many good scores… but Cengkareng has a few tricks up its (proverbial) sleeve to catch errant shots and so we saw a healthy return of fines on the day.

6 skirts on the day represented 30% of eligible cross-dressers so we were pleased to welcome up Andreas Stokowy, Andrew Shaw, David Baglivo, Eric Mary, Matt Otto and Rudie Basson. 5 ties also for Most Strokes but a pick-up on a hole saved his fellow finees and saw Tim Hessen come up for the Monkey photo. Monster Putter was less “competitive” with Andrew Shaw a clear awardee on the day.

Most Improved went again to Jaco Zaayman as he shaved 10 strokes off his front nine coming home whilst Rudie Basson recovered his fine by taking First & only Sandy on hole 17. First Birdie went to Gary Mond after it was discovered he had entered the hole incorrectly, birding his first which happened to be the 10th hole on the course.

Low Putts was awarded to Chris Lever for his 29 strokes on the greens and Low Gross to Arne Tjaden for his 81 off the stick.

In the Low Net categories, David Baglivo (70) won Low Net A, our monthly medal runner-up Lorenzo Marengo (67) Low Net B and 2018 serial winner, Lis Wymer (69) Low Net C. (Ed: Tim has yet to get an official Tee Set handicap…)

With the result record seeming to have gone walk about, a quick poll of the men determined the long drive winner to be Gary Mond whilst Efsi Hayati won the Ladies Long Drive and James Ross, in the final group, winning the Nearest to the Pin in our Monthly Medal skill prizes.

Our September Monthly Medalist was reigning Tee Set Champion, Santi Miller who returned 42 points in her net 66 as she saw off the game challenge of Matt Otto in the Match-Play semi-final.

Congratulations to Santi who adds her name to the shield, and to all our winners on the day. Detailed results are here.

Tee Set Match-Play Final

The Tee Set Match-play final for the Ric Wymer Cup will be played between Santi Miller and Jen Roestel after Santi won her semi-final over Matt Otto last Sunday 4 & 3.

The final is to be played by 18th November please.

Next Up: Monthly Medal Cengkareng 12pm 30th September 2018

Being the last week-end of the month, this Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s 2018’s Monthly Medal.

Thanks to the sponsorship of Ken Runyon and his teams at Accel Golf and Golf & Special Events Management we will recognizing the Low Gross and Low A, B & C winners with a trophy in addition to presentation of the Monthly Medal to the overall winner.

This week will also be the first  round of Cycle IX of the Tee Set Eclectic and an opportunity for you to down a first marker in the hope to wrestle the trophy from current holder, Amol Singhal. For the eagled eyed, you will note that this round was supposed to start in August but due to an administrative hiccup (they do happen occasionally), the scorecards from August were inadvertently lost before being entered to the Eclectic so we will need to begin the current round in September.

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp800,000 walking please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual.

News Flash: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng management have recently purchased 8 golf carts. These are priced at Rp55ok a cart so if you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengakreng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.

Sunday 23rd September 2018: Jagorawi County Club

The Day

With the summer break over, the Jakarta Inter-League kicked off again at Jagorawi Country Club on Sunday so it was an earlier start than usual as we took the short trip down the toll for our 9.30am shotgun start. Overall 68 players gathered for the league matches and/or just enjoy a round on one of the more challenging courses in our calendar and with Tee Set represented in many of the teams playing, we had a healthy sign-up for the Tee Set competition too with 33 players –  after eliminating one duplicate entry to our database.

No newcomers this week but some healthy welcome backs to Mick Mongold, Shawn Berg, Jiro Kamigatakuchi and Tim Hessen. We look forward to seeing you all out again sooner rather than later.

With additional holes provided by the course management for the shot-gun and no-body ahead of the front groups, we got around in great time under perfect skies. All of this meant we gave ourselves plenty of time to enjoy the Bandung Band, the BQQ and a few refreshments in celebration of the main event of the day, Geoff Thwaites’ 75th Birthday bash.

A lot of fun was had by those who stayed and enjoyed the afternoon in celebration with Geoff and a special thank you to Richard Mau for providing the birthday cake which we all enjoyed after a rousing Happy Birthday. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

With the celebration of Geoff’s party dominating the proceedings, the awards for play on the day were managed in short order by VP Ric Wymer during a break in proceedings. The timing was ably helped by the fact that some winners had gone home already, so there are only a few photos of the winners today, and that we had no fines taken on the day due to the JIL going on in parallel.

Most improved on the day was Matthew Powell with 8 and First Sandy went to Jaco Zaayman who it was great to see back out playing golf again with us and who got off to a flying start with his prize on his first hole. First Birdie went to David Prosser who Birdied his second whilst Low Gross went to Len Ogembo who shot an excellent 82 off the stick.

A trio of likely lads tied for Low Putts and with no putting awards being offered, they had to be content with the photo together; however this did not stop VP Bill Lloyd, David Baglivo and President Roger Finnie enjoying the moment.

Our Low Net A, B, & C winners on the day were Shawn Berg (70), Jaco Zaayman (72) and Cucu Chandra (87). Details of the results are here and many thanks to Ric for managing all the registrations and scoring on the day.

Whilst we all had a good day, there was not much to cheer again on the JIL front as we went down in 3 of the 4 close games and fell to an overall 2-8 defeat to a very delighted and competitive Sandbaggers. With the wooden spoon secure, we can upset league leaders Cloggies next month for pride.

World Cup of Golf 6th & 7th October 2018

2018’s edition of the Tee Set World Cup of Golf will take place at Cengkareng on 6th and 7th October 2018. Following feedback from many of the participants, we have made the event over 1 week-end and will be playing on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

As usual, Teams will be made up of 4 players who will be connected by their nationalities and we hope to see many teams out there hoping to wrestle the trophy off the Indonesian ladies who have won it for the last 2 years.

Please get together and start to form your teams and registrations are now on the website here.

Next Up: 30th September 2018 Cengkareng 12pm Rp800,000 Monthly Medal and Eclectic Cycle IX Round 1

Being the last week-end of the month, this Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s 2018’s Monthly Medal.

Next Up: Sunday 23rd September 2018 Jagorawi 9.30am shotgun

Geoff Thwaites, Tee Set’s former President and current sponsor, will be turning 75 years old on Sunday 23rd September. Showing us all that age is just a number, Geoff will be bringing all of his 50 years of golfing experience in Indonesia to bear as he competes for Tee Set in the Inter-League match before celebrating with all of us by hosting the Bandung Band and a light BBQ at Jagorawi from 3pm. He invites all Tee Setters and Inter-League players from the other teams to come hand help share a trip down memory lane and also toast his landmark birthday. Feel free to bring a bottle to help oil the afternoon!

With DOGs playing also on Sunday near-by, we hope some will be able to stop off on the way home since the party is not likely to finish early 🙂

On the golfing side, following the summer break, Sunday sees us take the short trip down the Jagorawi Toll as we return for our fourth visit of the year to Jagorawi Golf & Country Club. JGCC is an excellent test of golf and always in great condition.
