1st April 2018 Senayan Nasional

The Day

Easter Sunday saw us take the very short trip to Senayan Nasional in the centre of Jakarta, a far cry from the tales of 6+ hours travelling incurred by some of the Tee Setters who joined the annual pilgrimage to the ever popular Bandung Bash, hosted by our own Geoff Thwaites.

Despite being the school holidays and the aforementioned Bandung Bash, we had a very healthy turnout of 32 players boosted by another great turnout of 9 new comers: some just joining us for this week as they were visiting Jakarta over Easter and others longer term residents. Nevertheless all were given a very warm Tee Set welcome as it was our pleasure to welcome Olivia Thelma, Sistha Anindya, Daniel Watts, Eric and Catherine Four, Tim Henssen, Roy Widosuwito, Jannes Tjaden and Rena Overberg.

We also had the longest welcome back in quite some time as Epi Rohaeti joined us again (with husband Jeff Landau) after an incredible 316 weeks. More modestly we also welcomed back Moritz Kleine-Brockhoff and Jochen Overberg after 30 and 27 weeks, respectively. We hope to see all of you out again soon.

Our arrival and tee off was in very good weather; however 4 holes in for our first groups, a thunderstorm arrived very quickly and with the siren blowing we all headed for the safety of the halfway house or Clubhouse, depending on which was nearer. The 20 minute deluge resulted in a few players opting to take their rain check but most of us sat it out and were able to continue fairly soon after the thunder passed overhead. Although the rain left the fairways a little wet and softened the greens, it did not slow the green speeds down very much and putting remained a challenge for almost all the players.

In the absence of our usual secretarial support, registration and results on the day were done by President Roger Finnie, ably assisted by our Tee Set Champion Santi Miller so thank you to all the players for their added patience as they sorted everything out after also completing their rounds. Photos from the prize giving will be uploaded later in the week.

The Play

Although not the longest course, Senayan still represents a good challenge for all levels of golfers and we had 4 skirts recorded on the day with Matt McGowan, newcomer Daniel Watts, Moritz Kleine-Brockhoff and regular skirt aficionado Rudie Basson all getting to wear the Tee Set dress-up outfit. Thank you to Daniel for being a good sport and keeping the all the other winners company for both the photos.

With Rudie already fined for his skirt, Most Strokes on a hole went to a possibly rusty Epi Rohaeti for her 11 on a hole whilst the Top of the Putts went to newcomer Sistha Anindya for her 47 strokes on the greens. Sistha was however able to offset her fine for also taking home Most Improved for coming back 11 strokes better.

On the skill prizes, Low Putts went to another of our new comers, Jannes Tjaden, for his 29 putts, our only sub-30 putting effort of the day. First Birdie went to Ken Runyon for his effort on hole 6 and First Sandy to Lim Jonghwa for his effort on hole 8.

Our Low Gross on the day went to Jeff Landau, another strong round to record an impressive 72 gross on the day. Low Net of the day went to Chris Lever who recorded a net 65 to win B Grade where he was joined by Roger Finnie for A Grade with a net 67 and Kathy Scalabre who won Low Net C Grade with her 71 despite borrowing clubs for the day.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results of the day can be found here.

Next up and with Sunday being on a long holiday week-end, we make the very short trip to the excellent but tricky Senayan National golf course in the heart of Jakarta. Although shorter than the other courses we play, Senayan tests all the clubs in the bag and has the ability to catch out the unwary.

However the pleasant walk  and shorter course usually makes for a quicker round and with traffic lighter over the holiday week-end, we can all expect to be finished in good time to enjoy a longer beverage after the round and still get home early.

If you are not away celebrating Easter and are  interested to join us, please sign up here.

Cost is Rp800,000 walking and carts are available at Rp500,000 per cart so please team up if you wish to share the cost

Battle Royale III: 20th – 22nd April in Bali: Still need a few more players if you can join

The dates for Battle Royale III have now been locked in as 20th to 22nd April 2018 and it is to be played at Handara Golf Club, up in the mountains of Bali. We are looking to have a team of at least 16 players as we seek to defend the trophy won last year at Cengkareng but there is no limit as Par 5 Club will match our team numbers.

We have secured an excellent package which covers 3 rounds of golf (2 Saturday and 1 Sunday in the match), 2 nights B&B on the course, a Saturday night function and Sunday prize giving lunch. There are different rooming options but the cost is under Rp5m per head for a single rooming golfer and under Rp4m per head 2 golfers sharing. For those with non-playing partners then the extra charge will be around Rp750,000 on top of the single player cost.

Flights, drinks and Friday night dinner will be on top. Additional golf on Friday or Monday and additional accommodation is available.

More details on the schedule and the pricing based on the options selected will be shared to those who are interested in joining. For now, Captain Nick Gleeson needs to know who is interest in joining and any extra requests so please go here to register your interest.

Sunday 25th March 2018: Cengkareng

The Day

With the final round of Eclectic Cycle VII and the Monthly Medal being played this Sunday there was a lot to attract Tee Setters to Cengkareng, in addition to it being one of the best courses we play and with its excellent staff to look after us. A few late drop outs and some Tee Setters playing with other groups elsewhere on the course saw our numbers pared-back a little from the expected turnout but there were still 42 players out to enjoy an excellent day; one which continued for some into the early evening as the margaritas seemed to be on free flow.

In its own micro-climate by the airport, we arrived to a bright sunny day and hard running fairways as there had been no rain over the previous couple of days on the course. Only a strong breeze and perhaps the need for regular refreshment given the warm weather were there to defend the course from those on the top of their games and looking to take home one of the prizes on offer.

The 4 immediate past Presidents, Pascal, Craig, Ric and Geoff, were on hand to help current President Roger Finnie welcome another good contingent of 5 new-comers and several of our new recruits from recent weeks who were back for their 2nd or 3rd rounds. A warm Tee Set welcome was given to this week to newcomers Rutchanop Pojanavaraph, Nanda Sinaga, Gary Mond, Forrest Dale Standley and Eric Park.

Our longest welcome back went to Kitti Sriwathanangul who was out playing again with Tee Set after 94 weeks. Kitti is part of the Tee Set pool team and is seen here sporting the team’s shirts with fellow team members, Pascal “Pastis” Bekaert, Pool Team Captain and Web-guy Keith Miller and Tee Set Champion Santi Miller. Also welcomed back after long absences were Moragot Kruaroj and Tadashi Seki after 67 and 49 weeks, respectively.

Overall a good day was had by all and photos of the day are here for you to enjoy.

A big thank you to our Secretary Brenda Mayland who managed the days registrations and scoring as efficiently as usual despite being under the effects of the lurgy.

The Play

Cengkareng’s longer carry from the Blue to the Red tees usually leads to the harvest of a few fines and this week was no exception with 6 Tee Setters sharing the skirt photo: former Presidents Craig Ewers, Ric Wymer and Pascal Bekaert were joined by newcomer Rutchanop Pojanavaraph, Web-guy Keith Miller and Kongkiat Chaisri. No Monster Putter this week with 3 players just staying under 40 putts but Forrest Dale Standley, Richard Bolton and Tadashi Seki shared the Monkey with 10 strokes on a hole.

All 3 of them however recovered their fines by winning other prizes as did Pascal who was awarded 1st Par for Handicaps >=30 for his effort on hole 9. Tadashi took home Most Improved for coming home 9 shots better and newcomer Forrest had no troubles with the greens, mastering them for Low Putts with only 25 strokes needed.

We had 1 match-play on the day which was a tight affair, Geoff Thwaites prevailing 3&2 over Amol Singhal. No quarter was given from the outset with both recording Sandy Pars on hole 1 to share this prize. First Birdie was awarded to Matt McGowan for his effort on hole 5.

From last month we have recognized the Low Net and Low Gross winners at the monthly medal with a trophy thanks to the sponsorship of Ken Runyon and his team. Ken was on hand to present Low Gross to Santi Miller for her excellent 82 and Low Net winners Richard Bolton (72) Lorenzo Marengo (67) and Ian Butcher (72) – Ian winning on a count-back from Santi.

Ric Wymer also recovered his fine by taking home NTP as one of our Monthly Medal special skill prizes. Making it a family affair was Lis Wymer who took home Ladies Long Drive where she was joined by the always big hitting Andrew Waite who recorded an incredible 281m effort to secure the Men’s Long Drive prize.

Sunday being the last round of the Eclectic saw James Ross holding off the hard charging defending champion Laurie O’Connor, former winner Craig Edwards and Lis Wymer to secure the trophy for the first time. Congratulations to James who was presented with the trophy on the day by President Roger Finnie.

The final positions and scores in the Eclectic Cycle VII are posted on the web-site and Cycle VIII will begin next month when we are back at Cengkareng.

Sunday marked the first golf round in his 50th year in Indonesia for former President, the inspiration behind and sponsor of our monthly medal shield, Geoff Thwaites. Geoff was called up to receive a warm round of applause and to present the trophy to this month’s winner Jon Pipe. Jon was in the last group but took full advantage of his fine form to record a best of the day gross 78 and 45 points to win the Monthly Medal and have his name added to the shield.

Congratulations to all our winners and the detailed results of the day can be found here.

Cengkareng 25th March 2018 12pm: Monthly Medal and Eclectic VII Final Round

Being the last week-end of the month, this Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s 2018’s Monthly Medal. For those who already signed up but maybe did not spot the mistake in the form: it is walking on Sunday and there are no carts.

Thanks to the generous support of Ken Runyon and his team at Accel Golf and Golf and Special Events Management we will recognizing the Low Gross and Low A, B & C winners with a trophy in addition to presentation of the Monthly Medal to the overall winner.

This week will also be the 4th and final  round of Cycle VII of the Tee Set Eclectic with James Ross currently leading after 3 rounds with an Eclectic score of 56. There were a number of big movers last month and the pursuing pack caught up somewhat so there is still a lot to play for over the final round this Sunday. For those wishing to check their scores and current placing please check out the Eclectic web-page.

A reminder that the Tee Set Match-play has entered the knockout rounds and in order to help us get the games completed in good time, please look on the Match Play web-page to see your opponent and to reach out to them and arrange the match as soon as possible. Also, do not forget to send to James Ross your results when they are in so they can be officially updated.

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant stroll or ride the a hover-board over the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp800,000 walking please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual.

A note that we are limited to 64 players on the day so please sign up early. Should we exceed 64 sign-ups we will run a waiting list based on first come first served.

Just for thought…

If you are one of the those golfers who obsesses about stats and skill levels or just someone who wants to know how they stand against the average golfer of their age/ability then check out the below table for average driving distances which comes from a Golf Digest study. For male golfers only in this table although Golf Digest has the information for Ladies and for other clubs if you are interested to check it out. Thanks to the Singing President for the link.

Sunday 18th March 2018: Jagorawi Golf & Country Club

The Day

The Tee Set network has been working overtime the last few weeks and this week saw us welcome a further 7 newcomers; mostly recruited thanks to a mixture of work and social connections from our members but a special mention to the enterprising Tee Setters who recruited one of our newcomers during the rain delay last week at Modern. All in all, very encouraging for us to see numbers growing again after a period when there were more departures than arrivals.

A special Tee Set welcome to Jongchun Kim, Lim Jongwha, Kidakorn Angkanarak, Patrick Pech, Thomas Praming, Somchai Nuimark and Zahren Mohamed and we look forward to seeing you all at future events soon.

Sunday also saw us welcome back Dhitpong Viraikorn after 50 weeks and Christian Molau after 35 weeks.

Our newcomers and welcome backs joined a tremendous turnout of 46 Tee Setters who descended on Jagorawi for the early morning start at one of Jakarta’s top golf courses, the fine weather, the improved pricing we have been able to secure this year and to support the launch of the 2018 Jakarta Inter-League Season.

With 46 Tee Setters and approximately 35 other JIL participants, we were able to secure a 10 hole shot-gun start on the New Course and after the initial groups headed out we enjoyed a steady round with little hold-ups under clear blue skies.

As Tee Set was out in large numbers, we were also able to support some of the other teams who were short handed so that all the JIL matches were held with full complements of players. Sadly, it was not to help the Tee Set team who failed to fire on the day and went down 10-0 to Tin Cups. After the round we were able to enjoy the excellent F&B on offer at the club whilst the results and presentations were held and thanks to the early start, we were all finished mid-afternoon so everyone could enjoy an earlier than normal return to Jakarta.

With VP Ric Wymer nursing a sore elbow having been hit by another of our members whilst out on a social round, he was out and about collecting lots of photos on the day and these can be found here. A thank you to Ric and to Brenda Mayland who as always, managed all the registrations and scoring on the day with her usual efficiency.

The Play

With JIL involving 16 of the registered Tee Set players, we decided not to award Monster Putter or Low Putts since the match-play affected the putting stats for those participants. However we otherwise had our usual recognition of the daily winners and fines.

Chris Smith was recorded Most Strokes on a hole with 12 and was therefore captured with the Monkey whilst our skirt photo was well populated again with Amol Singhal, Chris Lever, Christian Molau, Dan Brody, David Baglivo, Detlef Blumke, Kidapron Angkanarak, Laurie O’Cnnor and Pekka Kivioja all sharing the Tee Set dress up outfit. Amol however was our Most Improved on the day with 13 strokes to offset his fine for the skirt.

John Suermondt was in the winners circle for a second week in a row, picking up First Par for handicaps >=30 whilst Paul Daud was awarded First Sandy for his effort on hole 8. After 50 weeks away Dhitpong Viraikorn was straight into the winners circle with his effort on hole 1 to win First Birdie.

Our newcomer, Jongchun Kim was the Low Gross on the day for his 86 off the stick whilst Jagorawi showed it difficulty with net pars taking home our 3 Low Net categories. Another winner from last week, Matthew Powell, won A Grade and he was joined Kongkiat Chaisri (B Grade) and Matt Otto (C Grade) in being recognized for their excellent rounds.

Thank you to everyone who turned out and supported the day and the individual detailed results are here.

Next Up: Cenkareng 25th March 2018: Monthly Medal and Eclectic VII final round

Being the last Sunday of the month, we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s 2018’s Monthly Medal.

With a number of big movers last month, the pursuing pack caught up somewhat so there is still a lot to play for over the final round this Sunday. Next Up: Jagorawi G&CC 9.30AM 18th March 2018

As mentioned previously, this year we will hold our regular Sunday events at Jagorawi on the 6 weeks when Inter-League is being played. Therefore, this week are taking the short trip down the Jagorawi Tol for our first visit of the year to Jagorawi Golf & Country Club. JGCC is an excellent test of golf and always in great condition.

Sunday’s event is open to all Tee Set players and we will select the Inter-League team from those who have signed up to play on Sunday. JIL Tee Set Team members who have confirmed their availability are therefore requested to also sign up as usual and please bring your Green Tee Set shirt for playing in.

It is a rare morning start at 9.30am which may challenge those out late on Saturday night but there is the attraction of an early return home too. 2 added benefits for this Sunday:

(1) There is a 10% discount on F&B in the club house on JIL match days this year; and

(2) We have some discounted vouchers for green fees courtesy of Richard Mau and the team at Hotel Luwansa. The price for the vouchers is Rp525,000 which will be collected by Roger Finnie or Brenda on the day. Please come and find us to collect/pay in cash for the voucher before you register with the Club. When you then register you will need to pay the Club for the cart & caddy fee but overall you will save around Rp200,000 on the published rate for the day of Rp950,000. Even if you are late the Rp950,000 fee still represents a good discount from last year thanks to the efforts of the JIL Committee.

Please plan to be there and ready to play in good time as JIL will go off as a shotgun start at 9.30am with Tee Set’s regular players to follow.

If you are interested to join us please sign up here to register.

For those wishing to learn more about the Jakarta Inter-League event please read this page on our website which gives some good insight to it and contains the 2017 report of the matches. If you are interested in playing for the Tee Set team and have not already informed us, please let Roger Finnie (whatsapp +62 811 389 1350) or Ric Wymer know a.s.a.p..

11th March 2018 Padang Modern

The Day

Continuing the trend of recent weeks, we were pleased to have a strong turnout of 40 players this week as we travelled to Padang Modern for our second visit of the year. Our numbers were boosted by 5 newcomers this week as well as the welcome backs of Chris Smith and Kasana Kaewwijit after 55 and 61 weeks, respectively.

Our newcomers, Andy Vincent, Holger Molendyk, Maya Gustiana, Poompich Sriputthimeth and Sofyan Syarief were given a warm Tee Set welcome and each had a good day by all accounts. We look forward to seeing you out again shortly.

We were greeted with excellent conditions when we arrived and were able to head out on time albeit  with those off 10 getting held up for 20 minutes or so as the groups in front of them were late getting off. About 12 holes into the round for the leading groups, a large thunderstorm arrived and held up play for around 20 minutes before we were able to continue on the now somewhat wetter course. Whilst we all finished in good time, it did make for a longer round than expected and a few wet clubs and clothes for us to take home to sort out.

With former President Pascal “Pastis” Bekaert in fine form on Sunday, President Roger Finnie was happy to pass over the presentation duties to him whilst he enjoyed a delightful whiskey with John “Malty” Suermondt following their Match Play.

A thank you Pascal for making the presentations so entertaining in your inimitable style and to Brenda Mayland for all the administration and registrations on the day.

With 2 cameras in action during the round there are plenty of photos to enjoy which can be found here.

 The Play

As usual, Modern provided a good opportunity to score well but also showed its teeth for those not quite on the top of their game.

Although Pascal was delighted to escape a skirt fine, Arthur Mallari, John Suermondt, Kasana Kaewwijit, King Tirto, Niclas Roos and Rudie Basson were not to be denied the opportunity of the Tee Set skirt outfit. 2 of our newcomers were also fined with Maya Gustiana taking home Most Strokes with 13 and Holger Molendyk Monster Putter with 45.

On the other end of the  putting stats, Bill Lloyd took home Low Putts, despite a late night at the Paddy’s Ball, with only 25 putts needed on the round. Pascal was able to award himself First Par for Handicaps >=30 for his effort on hole 3 whilst Chris Smith eased himself back into Tee Set golf after a year with First Sandy on hole 4.

With his match play versus President Roger Finnie over a little earlier than he wished, John Suermondt was able to find some form on the back nine to come home 8 strokes better than his front 9 and take home most improved. First Birdie went to Efsi Hayati for her effort on hole 2 whilst Roger Finnie took home Low Gross on a count-back from Arne Tjaden after both shot best of day 81’s.

Our main winners on the day were Matthew Powell Low Net A, Geoff Thwaites Low Net B and Dirk Kruip for Low Net C. Matthew and Dirk shooting excellent net 68’s and Geoff coming in on handicap. Detailed player results are here.

We are looking to have a team of at least 16 players as we seek to defend the trophy won last year at Cengkareng but there is no limit as Par 5 Club will match our team numbers. Presently we have 1o players signed up so are looking for some extra players to join.

Sunday 4th March 2018: Matoa Nasional

With the schedule to BSD still under negotiation, we made a late switch this week to return to the home of the Tee Set Championships, Matoa Nasional. A bright sunny day welcomed the 30 Tee Setters who came out this week with several needing to fight the traffic on the way and thus arriving closer to tee off time than they expected. However, traffic on the course was also busy and so we could only send our groups out as carts arrived in from the early starters. Overall there was little delay as the turnaround was managed efficiently by the starter and we headed out just after our 11.30am booking.

Matoa is well known for late afternoon showers and this week was no exception with everyone needing to come off the course for a 20 minute break due to a heavy storm coming through around 2pm. Fortunately it abated fairly quickly and we were all able to go out and finish our rounds without further interruption.

No new comers or long welcome backs this week but 3 match-plays were completed with Matt Otto prevailing on the 19th against Jens Roestel, Matthew Cherrett winning against Arthur Mallari and Dan Javier overcoming Fitrat Ameer. A reminder to send your scores into James Ross as the next round will be announced this week based on the preliminary round results.

A thank you to Brenda for managing the administration and scoring on the day and for Lis Wymer for making sure Brenda had a lift to and from the course with Ric being away this week. Pictures of the day can be found here.

The Play

Matoa is not known for being overly challenging and so we were unusually able to capture both a couple of skirts for Detlef Blumke and Stefan Skibinski as well as Monster Putter for Tee Set stalwart, Laurie O’Connor. Completing the set of fines was Pekka Kivioja for his Most Strokes of 12 on a hole. Pekka however recouped his fine by winning 1st Par for handicaps >=30 for his effort on hole 2.

Always a winner, First Birdie on hole 1 was won by James Ross whilst Arthur Mallari pipped 6 others on 29 putts by caressing his ball 28 times on the greens to win Low Putts. Most Improved was won by John Suermondt who made best use of the rain break to come home 10 shots better than his outward nine.

Despite losing his match-play, Fitrat Ameer again showed his love of Matoa shooting an impressive 75 to win Low Gross. Low B was won on a count-back by Craig Edwards after 4 players tied with net 69’s where he was joined by Low Net A winner, Steve Moruzzi after his net 70 and our best net of the day, Low Net C winner Andrew Shaw who had a net 68. Detailed results can be found here.
