Sunday 25th February 2018: Cengkareng

The Day

No newcomers this week but, as one of Tee Set’s favourite venues, Cengkareng always attracts a healthy turnout and this Sunday was no exception. With 2 weeks to go for the Match Play preliminary round, the Monthly Medal, 3rd Round of Eclectic VII and the promise of a relaxing margarita at the end of the round, there was a lot to attract players this week and the call was heeded with 51 Tee Setters turning out on the day. Our highest regular turnout since Cengkareng 50 weeks before…. and more on that later.!

We welcomed back Tony Blackburn after 107 weeks and he like the rest of us was treated to a wonderful sunny day and a golf course playing dry, fast and true: perfect conditions for a fun day out.

Possibly due to the hotter temperatures affecting the speed of play for some groups and/or a couple of groups getting inserted in between us around the turn, but we were quite slow to finish this week although everyone just got completed before dark, including one match play which went to an extra hole.

Thanks to Ken Runyon and his team at GSE, who came on as sponsors for the Monthly Medal in 2018, we also had our first trophies to award as prizes for Low Net and Low Gross in addition to the Monthly Medal.

With 51 players, we kept our Secretary Brenda Mayland busy with the pre and post round administration and thank you to Brenda for making sure the day ran smoothly as usual. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

A healthy turnout translated into a healthy set of fines this week, principally for skirts as usual with 12 Tee Setters getting caught out during the day: Aljosja Van Dorssen, Brett Shields, Craig Edwards, Dan Brody, Dan Javier, Goetz Ebbecke, Matt McGowan, Matthew Cherrett, Mike Webb, Rob Cheng and Rudie Basson all getting the photo call with the skirt.

David Baglivo heeded the call of Monkey for his Most Strokes of 13 on a hole whilst Monster Putter went to Livia Raviova obviously showing some rustiness after 28 weeks away, getting some extra practice with 41 strokes with the putter.

Richard Green was our Most Improved this week shaving 11 strokes off his outward score coming home and Mark Fiorello won Low Putts for his 29 strokes on the greens – both absent at the prize giving. Ivan Byriel scored our first and only par for Handicaps =>30 on hole 2 and always a First Birdie winner is a birdie on hole 1, this week scored by Holger Guenzel.

With Ken Runyon graciously passing over his donated Low Gross prize, Roger Finnie took home this trophy whilst our Low Net A winner was Ian Butcher on a 2 way count-back from Ken and Steve Moruzzi with a net 73. With net 69’s, our B Grade winner was Lis Wymer and C Grade winner was Richard Bolton, both also collecting their trophies.

Our Long Drive prizes were won by Santi Miller and Andrew Waite whilst Wina Nugraha was closest to the pin.

Back to the “deja vue”…. the last time we had 50+ players at Cengkareng was March 2017 and Axel Hertzke shot 80 gross for a net 67 to win Low Net A on the day. Repeating the score precisely on Sunday saw him take home the Monthly Medal this time and join the illustrious list of winners on the shield.

Congratulations to Axel and all the other winners on the day and you can check out the detailed scores here.

Tee Set Match Play

5 games played this week with:

  • Mike Webb defeating Roger Finnie 3&2;
  • Santi Miller prevailing on the 19th hole versus Matthew Powell;
  • Ken Runyon winning  6&5 over Ryan Shepherd;
  • David Balivo squeezing past Craig Ewers 1up; and
  • Laurie O’Connor winning the last for a 2up victory over Andrew Waite

A reminder for all the winners both from this week and previous weeks to submit their result to James Ross – its not official until he receives it by email.

Sunday 4th March, our next game, is the last week for playing the preliminary round so please arrange your matches accordingly.

Next Up: Matoa Nasional 4th March 2018

A change from the published schedule as all the arrangements with BSD were not sorted yet see us return to the home of the Tee Set Championship, Matoa Nasional.

Tee time is 11.30am and the price a very reasonable Rp650,000 with cart. Please sign up here if you are interested to join.

Cengkareng Sunday 25th February 2018: Monthly Medal and Eclectic Rd 3

Being the last Sunday of the month, we head to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s 2018’s Monthly Medal. From February 2018 I am pleased to announce that, in addition to recognizing the Monthly Medalist with the Medal and Shield presentation, we will recognize the Low Net and Low Gross winners at the Monthly Medal event with the presentation of a trophy each as below in lieu of the current cash prizes.

This has been possible thanks to the generous support of Ken Runyon and his team at Accel Golf and Golf and Special Events Management who offer bespoke golf and non-golf event organization for charities, societies or corporations.

GSE will be sponsoring the remaining Monthly Medals in 2018.

This week will also be the 3rd  round of Cycle VII of the Tee Set Eclectic with James Ross currently leading after 2 rounds with an Eclectic score of 62. For those wishing to check their scores and current placing please check out the Eclectic web-page.

A reminder that there are just 2 weeks remaining to get your preliminary round completed in the Match Play so please, if you have not already played, reach out to your opponent and arrange the match either this week-end or next. A reminder also to send James Ross your results when they are in so they can be officially updated.

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant stroll or ride the a hover-board over the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp800,000 please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual

Forthcoming Events & Notices

Inter-League

With Jagorawi Golf & Country Club having reduced rates for Tee Set and Inter-league this year, we will combine our weekly Tee Set event there on the 6 week-ends when Inter-League is being held. The first round of matches for the Inter-League will begin on March 18th.

Tee Set will be running 1 team only this year. Please advise Captain Roger Finnie or VP Ric Wymer if you are interested in playing in the Inter-League matches this year. For those wanting to learn more about Inter-League please visit here for more details.

Battle Royale III

Installment III of our now annual match against Par 5 Club, Bali is planned for the week-end of 20th-22nd April 2018 (a week later than the current schedule shows as Inter-League has been moved forward a week). The team will be captained by Nick Gleeson this year and the match is to be held at Handara Golf Club in Bali.

With both teams staying at the course, in addition to the 3 rounds of golf for the trophy, we are planning a Saturday night party and post event BBQ on Sunday. We are still negotiating rates but the initial prices are very attractive so we hope to get more than the 22 Tee Setters and partners who came along to the inaugural event in Nirwana 2 years ago.

Please let Roger Finnie or Nick Gleeson know if you are interested and more details, including a sign up page, will follow as soon as we have the prices locked in.

The MOAB: “Mother of All BBQ’s”

For those serious about their cooking outdoors and having the space to house one, check out the Classifieds Page for this impressive BBQ. Richard Bolton is looking for partners to share in an order for a set of 5 to be made up.

Sunday 18th February 2018: Senayan Nasional

As Clyde has had such a long term impact on and involvement with Tee Set going back to its earliest days we lead off our post with this tribute. Also, thank you to Ric, Jack Calcote, Geoff Thwaites and Keith Miller for their contributions.

Clyde Leon Wickiser 1942-2018

It is with sadness that we share the news of the recent passing of Tee Set’s longest active member, Clyde Wickiser.

Although not noted as one of the participants at Tee Set’s initial gathering in 1983, it may be purely by accident that he was not there as Clyde was already based in Jakarta and an active part of the Jakarta ex-pat scene at that time. Certainly from his first recorded participation in 1984, Clyde was an ardent supporter of Tee Set golf and everything the society stood for: fun golf, camaraderie and a few bintangs after the game washed down by an active debate on the state of world affairs or one of his famous stories.

Born in Belleview Nebraska and educated at Brentwood High School, Missouri, Clyde served in the US military in Europe from 1963-1966 before entering the world of Oil and Gas. Like many before and since, this brought him to Jakarta where he met and married Pinkan (“Pinky”) Warouw in May 1983. With Pinky being a well-known singer on the Jakarta pub circuit, in his usual deferential manner Clyde would often introduce himself as Pinky’s Husband.

The introduction of Tee Set’s rule of “You must be able to Stand unaided on the First Tee”  could well have been made for him as Clyde was well known for his regular week-end routine: Top Gun for Friday lunch, Amigos, the Green Pub or wherever Pinky was singing on Saturday night and Tee Set at Pangkalan Jati on Sunday – with Clyde often believed to have come straight from Saturday night to PJ. Clyde was always one of the last to leave on Sundays having put the world to rights and he participated in Tee Set as a member, as Handicap Secretary, as President and as a supporter for more than 30 years before ill health stopped him being able to come out and play just a couple of years ago.

On Sunday, VP and old friend Ric Wymer said a few words in memorandum for Clyde and on behalf of all the Tee Set family, our commiserations go to Pinky and all his family in Indonesia and the USA. RIP Clyde and your spirit will live on in Tee Set folklore.

The Day

Happy Chinese New Year to all Tee Set members and we hope the year of the Dog will bring you happiness, success and good health. Taking advantage of the long holiday week-end, a good turn-out of 37 Tee Setters made the short trip to Senayan Nasional in the center of Jakarta.

We were greeted by fine weather and an empty course meaning we were able to navigate our rounds in very good time with the first groups home well before 4pm. This gave us plenty of time to enjoy our refreshments afterwards with most players enjoying a good discussion and meal before the announcements.

It was a pleasure to welcome 3 new Tee Setters, Hana Ariestya, Frans Heuken and Detlef Blumke as well as welcome back Niclas Roos and Joe Callahan after 53 and 32 weeks, respectively. We look forward to seeing all out again soon.

A thank you to Beby and Lis for assisting with all the registrations and scoring on the day and pictures of the day can be found here.

The Play

Although not the longest course we play, there are a few longer carries for the men to the ladies tees as well as some visually intimidating tee shots which helps to explain our healthy return of skirts on the day: Amol Singhal, Arthur Mallari, Dan Javier, Geoff Thwaites, Joe Callahan, Matt Otto, Mike Harling and Niclas Roos all getting to share the Tee Set dress up outfits.

Although benefiting from the 1 fine rule, Geoff Thwaites and Mike Harling remained on deck for their Most Strokes photo for shooting 11 on a hole. The greens at Senayan always play faster than we normally see but Sunday saw 4 Tee Setters getting close to a half century of putts. 3 players tied with 45 putts, but they were out done by our new comer Frans Heuken who needed 49 shots with the flat stick and took home Monster Putter. Getting less value on the greens was President Roger Finnie who only had 29 putts but was rewarded with Low Putts on the day.

Although missing from his usual skirt photo, Stefan Skibinski was not to be out done by his wife’s win last week and came home 15 shots better to win Most Improved: however it seems he was so excited that he could not keep his hands still long enough for us to capture the photo clearly! Rosie Putri took home First Birdie for her Sandy Birdie on hole 2 and Ian Butcher First Sandy for his effort on hole 3.

Continuing her fine run of form, Tee Set Champion Santi Miller had the best score of the day with a Low Gross of 79 strokes. Our Grade winners on the day were Aljosja Van Dorssen as Low Net A with a net 68, Amol Singhal with a net 67 to win Low Net B and repeating his win from last week, Dirk Kruip for Low Net C with his net 69.

Congratulations to all the winners on the day and the detailed results of the day are here.

Senayan Nasional: Sunday 18th February 2018

IMG_7579

Next up and with Sunday being on a long holiday week-end, we make the very short trip to the excellent but tricky Senayan National golf course in the heart of Jakarta. Although shorter than the other courses we play, Senayan tests all the clubs in the bag and has the ability to catch out the unwary.

However the pleasant walk  and shorter course usually makes for a quicker round and with traffic lighter over the holiday week-end, we can all expect to be finished in good time to enjoy a longer beverage after the round and still get home early.

If you are not away celebrating Chinese New Year and the year of the Dog and are  interested to join us, please sign up here.

Cost is Rp800,000 walking and carts are available at Rp500,000 per cart so please team up if you wish to share the cost

Tee Set Match-Play

Results from last week-end: Mark Johnson won 2up against Craig Edwards and Chris Lever won 5&4 versus Jon Pipe.

A reminder that the preliminary round of matches for the bracket allocation is due to be  completed by 4th March so there are 3 week-ends left. If you have not already done so please contact your opponent and make the arrangements to play soon.

11th February 2018: Riverside

The Day

Greg Norman designed Riverside is more of our more challenging layouts and elicits stronger likes and dislikes amongst regular players than many of the courses we play. Sunday saw 21 of Tee Set’s “Riverside fans” join us as we took the relatively short trip down the Jagorawi Tol for the first time in 2018.

Despite heavy rain earlier in the week-end, we were greeted with a nice sunny day but perhaps the heavy conditions led to slower play from the morning groups which meant we endured a longer wait than expected to be able to tee off. Our two tee start also got cancelled leading so some confusion on the correct order of groups teeing off which needed to resolved. However, as usual we were able to get off in time to finish and enjoy the clubhouse refreshments whilst the results of the day were collated and announced.

No newcomers this week but a long welcome back to Joshua Alexander after 1 1/2 years away and also to Jon Pipe after 30 weeks.

A thank you to VP Ric Wymer who got himself out of his sick bed and to Riverside to manage the day’s proceedings despite not playing and to Secretary Brenda Mayland for all the registration and scoring on the day. Lots of good photos this week which can be found here.

The Play

As is becoming usual for Riverside, we had no skirts and with Monster Putter, clearly a rusty Joshua Alexander, going home early it was left to Ryan Shepherd and Jeff Durham to contribute to the Tee Set coffers with their tied Most Strokes of 10. Both were however able to recover their money, Jeff for First (and only recorded) Sandy and Ryan for Low Gross for his 89.

Nicki Stuart also was able to shake off the rust after a few weeks in wintery Europe to claim Most Improved for coming home 12 strokes better, whilst Wayhu Budi mastered the greens sufficiently to record Low Putts of 29.

With First Birdie and First Par =>30 not awarded under the 1 prize rule, it was left to recognize the winners of the Low Net categories: A Grade to Fitrat Ameer for a net 70 off his impressive gross  of 75 on the day; B Grade to Matthew Powell also net 70; and C Grade to our best net of the day, Dirk Kruip with 69.

Detailed results of the day are here.

Just a note….

The Committee would like to remind Tee Set members that whilst we endeavor to make all arrangements ahead of time to ensure as smooth a day as possible for all of us to enjoy, we are receiving preferential rates as guests on the courses we play and we are also subject to changes, particularly to starting arrangements, on the day whether these are caused by the weather, slow play ahead of us or late finishes of competitions played in the morning.

These are outside the control of the Committee and whilst we will review each occurrence on its merits after that week’s play, including deciding to change courses for the future as felt appropriate, we will need to address the issue on the day as they happens.

Members are therefore requested to bring up any issues they feel need addressing to the Committee members present and let them handle it rather than directly airing any concerns or grievances to the course management – often the starter. We are all here to play golf, Murphy’s law applies and your Committee have volunteered to take the brunt of the arrangements and frustration so you can enjoy your rounds as much as possible: so please do so.

If you are not suitable frustrated with your golf and would like to join the Committee please contact President Roger Finnie.

4th February 2018: Matoa Nasional

The Day

A very wet Saturday night and some heavy early morning rain potentially caused some doubt on playing conditions for Sunday’s return to the home of the Tee Set Championship,  Matoa Nasional. However, with Tee Set’s proud record of never missing a week-end in now (almost) 35 years, a little rain was not going to deter us turning out and 38 optimistic Tee Setters arrived in plenty of time to see the heavens open again whilst we enjoyed breakfast and completed the registrations.

Our perseverance was well rewarded as the rain abated as the first groups went out on time and we were to finish our round in bright sunshine. Whilst the course took some time to drain and therefore we played lift, clean & place, the rain did deter less hardy golfers and so we enjoyed a relatively empty course in front of us and a quick round of 4 hours for most groups.

The quick round meant we finished earlier than normal which resulted in some players deciding to get off early but most chose to sit and relax with some extra refreshments until the prize giving.

In addition to welcoming back Ian Butcher after 65 weeks and our 2 Champions from the 2017 Championships, we also gave a warm Tee Set welcome to 2 new Tee Setters, Dan Brody and Budi Wahyu. We look forward to seeing you out again with Tee Set soon.

We also caught up with some pending presentations. Firstly,  we recognized the work done behind the scenes by our Web Guy, Keith Miller, who was so busy sorting out scoring and recording drone footage on the day of the Championship that he did not get to collect his goody bag; this was presented to him by Championship Event Coordinator, VP Ric Wymer.

Secondly we were able to present to Vanco Pop-Petrovski his December 2018 Monthly Medal and capture a picture of him with the shield.

Thank you also to Brenda who managed all the registrations, scoring and reporting on the day. Photos taken on the day are all here.

The Play

We had 2 games completed in the preliminary round of the Match Play with Wina Nugraha carrying on the form which won her the Monthly Medal last week to beat Geoff Thwaites 5&4 whilst in a much tighter affair, Mark Fiorello won 1up over Amol Singhal.

Our newcomer, Dan Brody was our solitary skirt on the day giving him a full choice of the Tee Set dress up out-fit for his photo. Most Strokes went to Jens Roestel for his 12 on a hole which no doubt contributed to his Most Improved win by coming back 11 strokes less than his outward 9.

Our solitary Sandy Par on the day was achieved by the Singing President, Craig Ewers, on hole 5 whilst Chris Till won First Par for >=30 Handicap for his effort on hole 4. Ronald Lim won First Birdie which also fell on hole 4.

Tee Set Net Champion, Santi Miller, had to be content this visit to Matoa with Low Putts whilst Tee Set Gross Champion, Fitrat Ameer was Low Gross on the day with 81.

A couple of ties saw Ian Butcher and Roger Finnie win Low Net A with Nuri Puzey and Keith Miller sharing Low Net B. Best net round of the day saw Pekka Kivioja take home Low Net C with a net 69.

Detailed results of the day are here.

Sunday 28th January 2018: Cengkareng

The Day

Despite a heavy thunderstorm hitting Jakarta mid-morning, a healthy 39 Tee Setters turned out on Sunday at Cengkareng for the first Monthly Medal of 2018 and the second round of Eclectic Cycle VII. As usual we were well looked after at Cengkareng and enjoyed the customary good service in the Club House whilst waiting for our  appointed tee time.

Due the aforementioned thunderstorm, there was a short delay of 15-20 minutes on both tees whilst a few groups ahead of us went out but when we got out, we largely kept moving. A good breeze ensured that we needed to think a little more about each shot but unfortunately it was not enough to stop us getting wet over the last 2 or 3 holes as the rain came back as we were close to finishing; fortunately it was not heavy enough to stop play and all players were able to complete their rounds.

We welcomed 2 new joiners this week, Tim Boothman and Francis Denhardt and an impressive welcome back after 289 weeks to Holger Guenzel.  Also shown is Audie Kaunang as we did not capture his photo last week when he joined for his first round. We look forward to welcoming you all again soon to a Tee Set Sunday.

Sunday also saw us draw the first pairings of the Tee Set Match Play competition and you can connect here to see the first match pairings, contact details of all the participants and the dates for the preliminary and subsequent rounds to be completed by: initial matches to be completed by 4th March 2018.

Thank you to Brenda for managing all the registrations and scoring on the day as well as capturing some images of the day which can be found here.

The Play

As usual, a healthy return of skirts this week and whilst not including Peter Bush who has some serious skirt trouble last week, we were able to welcome up 7 Tee Setters for the most popular photo of the day: Bill Lloyd, Brandon Curson. King Tirto, Mike Webb, Pascal Bekaert, Rudie Basson and new comer Tim Boothman. Brandon stayed on deck for his Most Strokes photo with the monkey after his 12 on a hole although avoiding further penalty due to the 1 fine rule. Similarly Tim Boothman avoided further penalties for his Monster Putter effort of 40 strokes and was joined by Audie Kaunang.

Erik Milfors and Lis Wymer shared Most Improved with 11, whilst both Mike Webb and King Tirto recovered their fines by winning First Sandy (hole 4) and First Par for Handicaps =>30, respectively.

First Birdie, always a winner on Hole 1, went to Daniel Brown and Low Gross was won by Fitrat Ameer, our Low Gross Champion, with a score of 82 on his first Tee Set outing since the Championships. Low Putts with 27 strokes was awarded to Rudie Basson.

Ryan Shepherd (74), James Ross (71) and Pascal Bekaert (79) took home Low Net Honours in A, B and C grades, respectively.

Our Monthly Medalist with an impressive 40 points in the strong winds was Wina Nugraha who will have her name immortalized on the Monthly Medal Shield as our first winner of 2018.

Congratulations to Wina and all the winners on the day and please refer to the Eclectic page of the web-site later in the week for an update on the round 2 standings. Detailed results of the day can be found here.

Next Up: Sunday 4th February Matoa Nasional

Sunday 4th February sees us return to the home of the Tee Set Championships with the relatively short trip to Matoa Nasional.
