Jagorawi 9.30 am Sunday 19th November 2017

Next Up

This Sunday sees us head to Jagorawi for the final event of the Inter-League calendar to be followed by the traditional end of league BBQ and prize giving. An early start as usual at Jagorawi with a shot gun start at 9.30am leaving plenty of time afterwards for some refreshments and food whilst still not being too late home. If you are interested to join at Rp1,100k please sign up here.

Our good sponsor, Richard Mau and his team at Hotel Luwansa have some vouchers for Jagorawi and there will be booth set up beside reception where you can buy the voucher on the day for the discounted price of Rp825k and then exchange it for your golf club registration with Jagorawi. It does not include caddy and carts so the club will take an extra payment for that, not a huge saving net but still enough to fund the BBQ cost or a couple of beers on the course as you wish. Thank you to Richard and his team for offering this to Tee Set members.

Note the BBQ fee is Rp150k which will be collected as you register and in lieu of our weekly prize fund donation.

Tee Set Championships: Places filling up fast

The Tee Set Championship is now just 10 days away, taking place on 26th November 2017 at Matoa Nasional Golf Course.

A 6am breakfast and registration followed by a 7am shot-gun start leaves us plenty of time afterwards for food, a few beverages and to party the afternoon and evening away with the band after we have recognized the major winners of the day, the Tee Set Match-play and Eclectic winners for 2017 and for the iron-man/woman efforts of those regular players during the year.

The event is always popular and we are limited to 100 players on the day. Places are available on a first come first served basis and as of writing there are already 80 players and sponsors signed up. Those who had signed up by Tuesday evening will have received an email confirming their registration – if you feel you have registered by did not receive an email please let Roger Finnie know as soon as possible.

For everyone else interested in playing and wishing to secure your place please register to play by going to the simple form you will find here and filling it in. If we exceed 100 sign-ups then we will open a waiting list in case someone drops out.

A brief run-down of the day:

  • 6 am  Registration and Bloody Marys’ on tap to warm you into the day
  • 6.45am Group Photo at the front of the club house
  • 7am Shot-gun start: Hot Dogs provided by Hot Head and Smoothies from Asia Serv available on the course
  • 12.30pm-ish – Lunch including lamb kebabs and craw fish on the side with beers, wine and the frozen margarita machine keeping everybody refreshed and hydrated
  • Prize ceremony
  • Party the afternoon away thanks to the Singing President and his band
  • Monday morning……..best arrange important meetings for the afternoon!

After 2 years of being able to hold the price of the day down through having sufficient funds in hand to subsidize the event, the reality of fewer players during the year and some cost increases is that the event charge on the day will be Rp1.2m. We believe this still represents exceptional value for a full day of golf, fun and your goodie bag including the 2017 Tee Set Shirt and cap. We are discussing with Matoa for a price adjustment for Matoa members and juniors and will pass on the savings accordingly to the relevant players.

A big thank you to our sponsors for the day and who support Tee Set through-out the year (as of writing):

  • Gold Sponsors: Asian Tigers, Kojo, Samson Tiara, Hotel Luwansa, Asia Serv, Hot-Hed and Schenck Process
  • Silver Sponsors: Fugro, Ben Lines
  • Bronze Sponsors: Bintang Subsea

Lastly, and on a similar vein, we are always looking for additional sponsors for door prizes or more and so if you are able to offer some gifts or other form of sponsorship please let Ric Wymer or Roger Finnie know as soon as possible.

Sunday 12th November: Matoa Nasional Golf Course

 The Day

Sunday saw around 35 Tee Setters head out to Matoa to get in some practise ahead of the Tee Set Championships which are now 12 days away. With DOGS playing at the same venue 28 of them were registered in the Tee Set competition and with the likelihood of rain later in the day, both groups were keen to get away early so we split the tees between the 2 groups.

Matoa members were also mostly keen to finish early so there was a quick turn-around on carts as the large group of early players came in and we went out but this did not stop some enterprising Tee Setters looking for other modes of getting around the course!

Indeed our fears of rain were well founded as the heavens opened and the siren went off as most groups had 2 or 3 holes left to play leaving the scorers needing to apply the equitable scoring method to complete the scores and calculate the winners on the day. However a special mention to VP Bill Lloyd and Richard Mau who bided their time with a few refreshments waiting out the rain and went out and finished their rounds after the storm abated.

2 new-comers this week and a warm Tee Set welcome to Matthew Allan and Dan Javier and we look forward to seeing you both back again soon.

The Play

Although Matoa yielded no skirts again with its friendly Blue to Red tee distances, the scores on the day were unusually high with only 1 round breaking net handicap. Congratulations to Divya Prakash Ahuja who shot an excellent 81 off the stick to score a net 69 and win Low Net A where he was joined by Singing President Craig Ewers (net 72) and Rusty Witver (net 75) as winners of Low Net B and C, respectively.

Low Gross went to Stuart Wigley for his equal best of the day 81 and Low Putts to James Ross for his excellent 26 shots with the flat stick.

John Suermondt maintained his winning run as First Par for handicaps >=30 with his effort on hole 1 and Most Improved went to Bill Lloyd for shaving 9 strokes off his front nine score, Bill was presumably out finishing his round as we missed a picture of him, but we did manage to capture Richard Mau who was awarded first Birdie.

First Sandy went to VP of Almost Everything, Ric Wymer for effort on hole 6 and our only Sandy of the day but he was looking bemused as he needed to hand back 1/2 his winnings for his fine for Most Strokes of 10 on a hole. Our only other fine being for Monster Putter which went to Joseph Reyes for his 41 putts on Matoa’s greens.

A thank you Ric for managing proceedings on the day and Beby for entering all the scores. Pictures of the day are here and detailed player results here.

Sunday 5th November 2017 BSD

The Day

Sunday saw us return to BSD for the second time this year with 32 Tee Setters turning up to enjoy one of Jakarta’s premium venues. With a week-end tournament being played on Saturday and Sunday morning, the course was is much better condition than our last visit enabling several Tee Setters to return excellent results on the day as you will read below.

With the later start booked to enable the tournament to finish, the course arranged a shot-gun start across 8 holes making for a smooth round, completed in good time. Despite several rumblings from the heavens we were able to finish without any interruptions from rain or lightening which skirted the course through-out the afternoon.

One newcomer for the day, David O’Shea and a welcome back after 268 weeks to long time supporter of Tee Set, Jack Calcote. Also welcomed back after 51 weeks was David McNally.

The Play

The fine for Most strokes on a hole with 10 was taken by Rudie Basson with Kathy Scalabre and new-comer David O’Shea taking Monster Putter “honours” for their 42 putt efforts. Kathy was absent at the photo taking leaving David to be pictured with the monkey. Not to miss out on a photo opportunity, David also remained for the skirt picture where he was joined by Rudie and the Singing ex-President, Craig Ewers – more of Craig later in the post.

Mick Mongold was Low Putts on the day with an impressive 27 putts on the fast and underlating greens. 1st Birdie was shared by Stuart Wigley and Michael Bartsch for their 1st hole efforts and Divya Prakash Ahuja and President Roger Finnie shared 1st Sandy Par for their hole 7 up & downs. Last but no means least on the skill prizes was John Suermondt who won 1st Par for Handicaps >=30 for his par on hole 14.

Low Gross was won by Jeff Landau for an impressive 75 off the stick, just edging out Mark Blake on a count back. Craig Ewers turned his skirt into a sandy par on hole 17 on the way to a net 67 which won him Low Net B grade where he was joined by Ken Runyon Low Net A grade winner with a net 66 and a decidedly “worse for ware” Brett Shields who managed to put aside an aching head to win Low Net C grade with a net 69.

With the Championship coming up VP Ric Wymer was cleaning out the stocks from 2016 and so all the winners were also given a sleeve of Tee Set Balls in addition to the usual prize.

A thank you to Brenda for doing all the registrations and scoring on the day and safe travels for your holidays the next 3 weeks. Full results of the day are here and photos as usual here.

Sunday 29th October 2017: Padang Modern

The Day

Sunday saw us return to Padang Modern for the October Monthly medal and as has become customary we had a semi-shot gun start off 5 holes at 12pm following the morning’s play albeit with fairly short notice. In addition to the Monthly Medal, Sunday also saw the final of the Match-Play played between Jari Antikainen and Tony Howarth and please read further below for the report.

Having set up for a 2 tee start, we got everybody up and out for our 12pm shot-gun to find the heavens opening up for a short burst of rain. However, by the time most people got half way down the first hole the rain had stopped and although it threatened a couple of times to return, we were able to finish without any interruptions. The subsequent muggy conditions must have slowed us down as the round was a slightly longer than normal taking over 5 hours and thus resulting in a quick shower and change being needed before the prize giving.

No new-comers this week, despite the contrary mentioned below, with Mark Blake after 65 weeks being our biggest welcome back, followed by Ronald Dimaculangan and Mark Mongold.

Although Halloween was almost upon us and despite the offer of a sponsors prize from Coach Ken Runyon, there were no takers on the dress up front. However Ken kindly donated the prize of a free hours golf lesson to be given to the highest grossing player on the day. Ken also offered a free 15 minute clinic to all Tee Set members so a huge thank you to Ken and his team at Accel Golf for their support. Please refer to the Classified Page for details on how to contact Ken to make your booking.

Match Play Final

Fresh off completing the Jakarta Half Marathon in the morning, Jari Antikainen, winner of the Kuning Bracket, took on Emas Bracket winner Tony Howarth in the final of the Tee Set Match-Play. A close game ensued with the finalists turning all square and the outcome still uncertain heading down the 18th fairway. Leading going into the final hole, Jari was able to get up and down for a safe par and secure the 2017 Match-Play Championship 2-Up. Congratulations to Jari for his victory and to Tony for reaching the final. Their trophies will be awarded at the Tee Set championships and a big thank you to James Ross for his smooth running of the event again this year.

The (Rest of the) Play

The prize of 1 hour’s free golf lesson went to Andrew Chee for his 117 strokes on the day, compensating his full house of booby prizes which saw him also record Monster Putter (not awarded as less than 40 putts), Most Strokes (11) and a skirt. The skirt was shared with 4 others, Jaco Zaayman, Michael Seabrook, Ronald Dimaculangan and Rudie Basson.

Ronald, Most Improved with 11, and Michael, First Par for >=30 Handicap, both managed to off-set their skirt fines.

Joining them in the prize circle was serial Low Putts winner, Mark Johnson for his impressive 24 strokes with the flat stick and Best Gross winner Mark Blake for his 79 off the stick. First Birdie was awarded to joint winners David Baglivo and Roger Finnie for their effort on hole 3 and First Sandy went to Anna Wilson for her effort on hole 6.

Barbora Gaislerova (71), Mike Webb (73) and John Suermondt (70) won Low Net A, B  and C divisions, respectively, with John slipping out just before the prize giving and this missing out on his picture.

Nearest the Pin was won by Barbora for her effort which stopped 2m from the hole and Tony Howarth was able to console himself in taking home long drive for his 245m effort.

Last and by no means least, the Monthly Medal saw our 3rd repeat winner of 2017 with Arthur Mallari returning after his summer break from Tee Set golf to secure October’s honours with 40 points.

Congratulations to Arthur for taking home the monthly medal and Grand Slam Golf voucher. Detailed player by player results can be found here and all the photos of the day here.

Finally a thank you to Brenda for all her efforts in making the day run smoothly as usual.

Sunday 22nd October 2017: Pondok Cabe

The Day

With 2 very popular golf events in Bali this week-end, Sunday’s game was always going to be a smaller affair with 21 Tee Setters turning up to join us at Pondok Cabe. The course was in good condition and the fairways relatively firm despite the recent on-set of the rainy season. Pleasantly, there was also not many other players out on the course so we were able to get off on-time and enjoyed a smooth 4 hour round. This meant that we were all safely in the clubhouse by the time some heavy droplets started to threaten the skies.

2 new-comers this week,  Ryan Douwes and Harun Pravanta, who were both given a warm Tee Set welcome and we were pleased to welcome back Ivan Byriel after 20 weeks.

A thank you to Brenda for all the arrangements during the week and the scoring on the day.

The Play

Whilst there were many good putting returns, led by President Roger Finnie’s 25 putts, at the other end of the putting table was new-comer Ryan Douwes who was recognized for his Monster Putter effort of 43 putts. Most strokes went to VP of almost Everthing, Ric Wymer, whilst a modest return of skirts resulted saw Andrew Chee, Ivan Byriel, John Suermondt and Richard Bolton digging into the Tee Set bag for their photos.

Daniel Brown was awarded 1st Sandy for his effort on hole 1 and also had Most Improved but with the 1 prize rule did not get to take home further winnings and with other potential winners already left this went unclaimed for this week. Ivan recouped his loses by sharing 1st Par for Handicaps =>30 with Renny Sperry for their efforts on hole 4.

Low Putts and 1st Birdie were won by winners in other categories so we were just left to recognize Fitrat Ameer for his excellent Gross 76 off the stick for Low Gross and the winners of the respective flights, Roger Finnie Low Net A, Glen Menyennett Low Net B and Richard Bolton Low Net C for their efforts of 75, 65 and 68, respectively.

More detailed results can be found here and photos of the day here.

Next Up: Monthly Medal Padang Modern

As usual for the last Sunday of the month we are back to Padang Modern for the monthly medal where Laurie O’Connor will be looking to retain the shield for another month as he defends the Monthly Medal.

The winner will take home a medal and Rp1juta voucher from Grand Slam Golf as well as get their name immortalized on the Monthly Medal Shield. Tee off will be at 12pm and the cost is Rp770k including cart.
