This week we start the special time of the year where the mix of Ramadan and what should be the dry season has motivated us to schedule most of the Sundays down the Jagorawi Toll, as we got better rates, should have less busy courses and we hope less traffic and rain.

Therefore this Sunday will be our only scheduled visit of the year to one of the top courses in the area, Bogor Raya designed by internationally renowned Australian architect Graham V. Marsh on 72 hectares of stunning natural setting.

So if you haven’t done so yet and want to join us for a mere 850,000 Rp, not only including cart but also Indonesian dinner, and an official tee off time of 11:30 please register here.

Monthly Medal, Padang Golf Modern, Sunday 28th May 2017

The Day

After most players got there early due to the light Ramadan traffic, Padang Golf Modern once more provided our 42 Tee Setters a great day by allowing us to avoid their morning tournament by giving us a semi-shotgun start on the first 5 holes. The strategy worked well, as even though we had to stop play for around 30 minutes during a torrential downpour, we all finished in good time. The only problem, apparently only noticed by some, was the fuel stench after the rain we couldn’t figure emanated from where!

Additionally Modern was nice enough to print us free of charge new banners for our Nearest to the PIN and Longest Drive holes, the former pictured above.

We had 2 Newcomers this week: the lovely South-African couple Minda and Rudie Basson who said they had a great day and would definitely be back, to whom we wish a warm Tee Set welcome.

We also had some Welcome Backs worth mentioning, lead by Jeffri Samosir after 59 weeks, followed by the jovial John Steger after 26 weeks and Chakkapong Yingwattan and Dia Meta Sari after 23 weeks.

The Play

To his apparent surprise Mark Johnson won Low Net A Grade for his net 72. Karan Khetan, who was in the shower so missed the picture, won Low Net B Grade with 72 on a count-back from Anna Wilson. While Dia Meta Sari won Low Net C Grade for her excellent net 69, on a count-back from Paisan Thanasitsomboon.

 

 

Stuart Wigley won Low Gross for his superb 81 off the stick.

 

 

 

Thanks to the one prize rule, Roger Finnie and Wina Nugraha were both awarded Low Putts with 26.

 

 

 

 

Jan Albeck won First Birdie on his 1st hole.

 

 

 

 

 

John Steger won First Sandy Par on his 13th hole.

 

 

 

 

First Par Over 30 was awarded to Paisan Thanasitsomboon for his effort on his 3rd hole.

 

 

 

Efsi Hayati and Geoff Thwaites both won Most Improved for shaving 10 shots on their back nine.

 

 

 

For our Monthly Medal only awards, long hitter Tony Howarth won Longest Drive with 240 meters, while Stuart Wigley secured Closest to the Pin for his effort that was measured as 2.25 meters but he claimed was much closer.

And the biggest prize of them all, the Monthly Medal, was awarded to Laurie O’Connor for his 44 Stableford points accumulated during the best round of the day with his fantastic net 64. His great performance might also help his recent campaign to distance himself from his O’Threeputt moniker, as he only needed 28 putts today. For his performance Laurie will get his name engraved on our Monthly Medal Shield and received a medal and a 1,000,000 Rp voucher for Grand Slam Golf merchandise (paid in half by GSG and half by Tee Set).

Once more our Monster Putter Monkey stayed in the bag, or should I say was thrown back in the bag by VP Ric, as nobody deserved a picture with it, since everybody had a good day on the greens given the highest number of putts was a respectable 36.

Most Strokes was shared by Geoff Thwaites and John Suermondt for their 12 shots on a hole, John avoiding the fine as you will see below he had also collected a skirt, he did pay for.

Probably inspired by yours truly rare feat of not getting any skirt on the day, Modern only produced 4 skirts today, for: John Suermondt, the colorful Manfred Borer, Stefan Thiele who managed to avoid the photo and more surprisingly the long hitting and hairier than normal Tony Howarth.

Tee Set Match Play

Sunday 3 more matches of the third round of our 2017 Match Play competition were completed, during which:

  • Divya Prakash Ahuja, who pulled a LIFO (Last In First Out) yesterday, edged Tom Alcedo 2 and 1.
  • Tony Howarth who had seen his early lead disappear, finished strong to defeat Chris Murchison 2 up.
  • Roger Finnie bested Manfred Borer 2 and 1.

Permata Sentul, Sunday 21st May 2017

The Day

Being the last Sunday before the start of Ramadan meant a lot of families were out and about visiting relatives and showing respect to dearly departed loved ones. The trip out to Sentul was congested getting through Cibubur but thinned out heading further south. Mark Johnson spoke of some traffic horror stories from the day before and our fingers were crossed, but on the bright side such inconvenience would not be repeated for our trip back in the evening. In fact the return trip was a near dream run with only congestion as you’d expect around the always inefficient toll booths.

Upon arrival at Permata Sentul the first indication of potential trouble ahead was an overflowing car park due to the big tournament in the morning. The restaurant was near empty, apart from a dozen very attractive waitresses, so the earlier birds kicked back with a bit to eat and a couple of cold Bintangs. Discussions commenced with the starter about the promised mini shot gun start at 1pm but his imminent disappearance gave the second hint all was not right. Just before 1:00 all 25 golfers ventured out to their carts but with no allocated tee boxes. Finally the starter shooed us off to number 1 and number 10 and the rest is history, since the last group didn’t tee off till 1:45 finishing before dark was always going to be a struggle. Around half of the groups scraped home to finish, but those unlucky enough not to finish before darkness had the Duckworth scoring method applied to their missed 2 or 3 holes. Despite the runaround given by the starter at the start, play was quick and cool under overcast skies. It is a beautiful course and it’s a real pity the long rainy season and the Jags traffic restricts our schedule to play there only once or twice a year. At Rp700K a round, inclusive of cart, it’s a steal and the restaurant has a very varied menu. Probably too varied as discovered by Billy Lloyd who ambitiously took on a Korean selection or two and suffered dire consequences well into the next morning. His double whammy was not being able to cope with the fastest greens we have seen anywhere in Jakarta this year. Lessons learnt. 1) Pass on the chicken katsu curry and 2) leave your approach shots on the fringe.

We had 3 Newcomers: Rod Robinson, Shaun China and Sibusiso Ntonga to whom we wish a warm Tee Set welcome.

We only had one Welcome Back worth mentioning: Brandon Curson after 49 weeks.

The Play

Mark Johnson took full advantage of the fact there were only 2 A Grade players present to win Low Net A Grade with his rather ordinary net 77. Not to be undone by his wife recent performances, Ric Wymer had the round of the day by winning Low Net B Grade with his amazing net 62 he attributed to “Permata Sentul being short and tight and being lucky enough to hit many greens in regulation”. While Dirk Kruip won Low Net C Grade with his excellent net 66.

Singing ex-President Craig Ewers could have won Low Gross for his fine 88 off the stick had he not had to run to attend the prestigious Indonesian Choice Award 2017 next door in Sentul.

 

 

 

Low Putts was awarded to Anna Wilson for needing only 28 putts on the day.

 

 

 

 

 

James Ross won First Birdie on his 2nd hole.

 

 

 

 

 

First Sandy Par was awarded to Jaco Zaayman for his effort on his 13th hole.

 

 

 

 

First Par Over 30 was not claimed this week, as the few that qualified for it didn’t manage any.

 

 

Jeff Durham was awarded Most Improved for shaving 9 shots on his back nine.

 

 

 

 

Most Strokes was awarded to Glen Menyennett for his 11 shots on a hole.

Our good friend Bill Lloyd had a rough day on the greens and merited the less coveted Monster Putter for his 41 hits of the flatstick, including 5 putts on a par 3 where he was on the green in 1, so got his picture with our Tee Set Monkey for free as he also got a skirt.

Even though not as spectacular as last week, Permata Sentul produced 6 skirts this week, or 26% of the men playing, for: James Ross, Newcomer Shaun China, Matthew Cherrett, Bill Lloyd and Brandon Curson, pictured below:

Cengkareng, Sunday 14th May 2017

The Day

We had another very popular day at Cengkareng, where a few last minute cancellations were to be outweighed by late registrations resulting in a healthy 45 Tee Setters playing. The conditions were ideal, if not too hot, as there was not even a sign of rain, which is pretty rare these days in the Jakarta area. A slightly earlier than scheduled tee off time and clear course ensured everybody finished in time to shower, enjoy Cengkareng’s good food and margaritas, and the prizes ceremony rapped up at sundown.

We had 2 Newcomers, Jochen Overberg a regular with our friends the D.O.G.S. and Lars Hansen once more increasing our Danish contingent, who both didn’t waste any time to invest in our Tee Set shirts and to whom we wish a warm Tee Set welcome.

We had some decent Welcome Backs lead by Iven Macleod after 43 weeks, followed by Dean Akiyama and Gert Borrits after 35 and 33 weeks respectively.

The Play

Jan Albeck had the round of the day to win Low Net A Grade with his brilliant net 66, making him a potentially interesting recruit for our Inter-league teams. David Baglivo recovered some of his gambling loses by winning Low Net B Grade with his net 69. While Lis Wymer, who had not been rewarded yesterday due to a clerical error, won Low Net C Grade for a third week in a row for her net 73.

 

 

Richard Mau had a great day to win Low Gross for his amazing 76 off the stick.

 

 

 

 

Low Putts was not awarded this week as the potential winners: David Baglivo and Jan Albeck with 26 putts, and Richard Mau with 28 putts had already won other prizes.

Frank Wilson would have won First Birdie on his 1st hole had he not been OB, but on the other end he escaped the skirts picture.

 

 

First Sandy Par was awarded to our good friend Geoff Thwaites for his effort on his 1st hole.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Steven Pettis won First Par Over 30 on his 4th hole.

 

 

 

 

 

Matt Fairey was awarded Most Improved for shaving 13 shots on his back nine, where he shot a magnificent 35 off the stick, greatly contributing to his match play win against Ric.

 

 

 

Most Strokes was awarded to Kelly Chaisson for his 12 shots on a hole, he admitted might have been a 13, during a rough day where he officially carded a 120 after much negotiating with his caddy, and spent most of the round in the bushes accumulating mood on his shoes and leaving his playing partners looking for him all day. The only bright side was that he didn’t have to pay the fine for it as he also got a skirt.

Newcomer Lars Hansen was all smile for his photo opp with our Tee Set Monkey for winning the less coveted Monster Putter for his 42 hits of the flatstick.

President Pascal Bekaert, who had managed to escape the dreaded skirt on his first hole despite the heckling from the gallery, wasted no time to get one on his second hole, followed by 3 more during his round, constituting a wardrobe. But to his relief, he had a lot of company for the famous picture, as as usual Cengkareng produced a hefty 15 skirts, or 35% of the men playing, too many to list here so refer to the list at the top of the Post.

Our field reporter, Chris Murchison, captured below Richard Green and Mick Riley’s balls, clearly behind the ladies tee, where Lis maybe should have let them play their second shot before teeing off!

Tee Set Eclectic

Sunday night, in a rather private ceremony, the winner of our Tee Set Eclectic Cycle 5 Craig Edwards was handed our trophy he will keep for 4 months, until the next winner is found.

Jack Larson’s departure

It was with great sadness that on Sunday we learned of the passing of one of Tee Set’s founding members, Jack Larson. We offer his family our deepest condolences.

Riverside, Sunday 7th May 2017

The Day

35 Tee Setters and their guests from Sentul Swingers played at Riverside for our second visit of the year. Good weather greeted our arrival and we had high hopes of finishing the round after the wash out of the last visit. A thank you to Simon Reynolds who arranged a 2 tees start for us following the completion of the morning’s event and we headed off on time at 12.30pm with the Inter-league rematch heading off Hole 1 and the remaining Tee Setters off Hole 10.

Unfortunately, it was to prove a false hope as the heavens opened once more at Riverside as most players reached holes 12-14. Most Tee Setters battled on, some after a rain break, but the majority of the Inter-League matches were called off as the greens became flooded and unplayable. With the disjointed finish and with several players who finished early also departing early, the prize giving was a small affair and a number of usual prizes went unclaimed. For those that stayed, we enjoyed a smooth ride home as the rain abated in the early evening.

We had 4 Newcomers this week: Giordano Faggioli, Scott Schauer, Vanco Pop-Petrovski and Viggo Kristofferson, to whom we wish a warm Tee Set welcome.

We also had some serious Welcome Backs, mainly by the Sentul Swingers who used to play with Tee Set, lead by Johanna Cunningham after 249 weeks, followed by Michael Bartsch after 242 weeks, and Bob McLeod after 119 weeks, we hope convinced them to play with us again.

 

The Play

As previously stated, since a lot of players didn’t complete their round and some of the results above were calculated with “equitable score” on the rained off holes, and the fact a lot of people were OB for the ceremony, only a few prizes were awarded this week, mainly to the ones who actually completed their round.

 

 

Scott Schauer was awarded Low Net A Grade for his net 79, as he was one of the few A Graders to complete his round.

 

 

 

 

 

Once more Lis Wymer won Low Net C Grade for her amazing net 66, which will no doubt lower her handicap.

 

 

 

 

 

Frank Wilson won First Sandy Par on his 16th hole.

 

 

 

 

 

First Par Over 30 was awarded to John Suermondt for his effort on his 2nd hole.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Peter Bush won Most Improved for shaving 5 shots on his back nine.

 

 

 

 

Unfortunately Frank Wilson had to return half of his earnings for First Sandy Par when he was also awarded the less prestigious Most Strokes for his 10 shots on a hole.

We only had 2 skirts today, by two of our old regulars we don’t see much these days maybe indicating a lack of practice, Jaco Zaayman and Kelly Chaisson.

Inter-league

The results of today’s Inter-League match between Tee Set and the Sentul Swingers will be subject to some adjudication from the Inter-League committee due to the unfinished holes. Tee Set were leading overall 7-3 at the time the match was halted but we may be out again to make a 3rd effort at completing the round.

Unlike previously indicated, Tee Set will not play their match against Tee Set Too at Cengkareng on May 14, but will later in the season.

For those of you who have never attended this event, it is a great opportunity to spend a weekend outside Jakarta at the scenic Rancamaya Estate, either with your family or your golf buddies. You will find a lot more details on the web page, but in a nutshell it consists of an unofficial round at Rancamaya on the Saturday afternoon, a great BBQ on Saturday night and on Sunday afternoon an official Tee Set round at Rancamaya, along with for those selected to represent Tee Set our yearly match against the D.O.G.S.

Monthly Medal, Padang Golf Modern, Sunday 30th April 2017

The Day

Padang Golf Modern once more provided a great day for the 42 Tee Setters who showed up for what some pessimists thought might be a struggle due to their big tournament in the morning and our 12:30 tee off time, but as it turned out their strategy to give us a semi-shotgun start on the first 6 holes proved excellent and we were all done by around 5pm.

The weather was also superb, as even though we got dark clouds a couple of times, we got no rain at all, and even a nice rainbow:

Additionally Modern was nice enough to give us 5 free pitchers of beer to compensate for our later than normal tee off time, which were quickly gobbled by our thirsty Tee Setters after the round.

We had 2 Newcomers this week: Richard Mau’s friend Rory Davies, and Mitchell McDonnell who greatly enjoyed playing with our ladies Santi & Wina, to whom we wish a warm Tee Set welcome.

We also had some Welcome Backs worth mentioning, lead by Manoj Mishra after 66 weeks, followed by Brett Shields and Paul Franklin after 34 and 32 weeks respectively, and the return of 2 of our favorite ladies Dede Nielen-Groen and Juju Juhairiah after 12 weeks.

Birthday girl Dede Nielen-Groen won Most Improved for shaving 10 shots on her back nine.

 

 

 

 

For our Monthly Medal only awards, Andrew Waite won Longest Drive with 245 meters, while Alastair Livingston secured Closest to the Pin on his last hole for his effort that ended about 1.78 meters from the hole.

And the biggest prize of them all, the Monthly Medal, was awarded to David Baglivo for his 39 Stableford points accumulated during one of the best rounds of the day with his net 70. For his performance David will get his name engraved on our Monthly Medal Shield and received a medal (he said he might wear all month) and a 1,000,000 Rp voucher for Grand Slam Golf merchandise (paid in half by GSG and half by Tee Set).

Once more our Monster Putter Monkey stayed in the bag, as nobody deserved a picture with it, as everybody had a good day on the greens given the highest number of  putts was a respectable 37.

To the Treasurer’s pleasure Most Strokes was shared by Arthur Mallari, Dede Nielen-Groen, Glen Menyennett and yours truly for our 10 shots on a hole, Glen avoiding the fine as you will see below he had also collected a skirt, he did pay for.

We had 6 skirts today, including some regular cross-dressers like Mel Cantarella and Pieter Nielen-Groen, but surprisingly not the most regular of them all President Pascal, Glen Menyennett, Brett Shields who avoided the photo, but also some rare recipients Craig Edwards and Fernando El Guapo Gaggino.

For those who are still shocked to see Fernando behind the skirt, some attributed to the fact he played with me and must have caught the virus, here he is playing his second shot, way behind the ladies tee:

Tee Set Eclectic

Sunday’s round was also the last round of Cycle 5 of the Tee Set Eclectic, and thanks to VP Roger with help from Tony Howarth for entering the scores, the final results were calculated at Modern and Craig Edwards capitalized on the absence of the leader Peter Bush to win Cycle 5so will get his name engraved on our Eclectic trophy and will get officially recognized at the Tee Set Championship. All the details including all the players results will later be posted on our Tee Set Eclectic page.

Inter-league

Due to previous cancellations and scheduling problems at Jagorawi, Tee Set will play their catch up match against the Sentul Swingers at Riverside on May 7 and Tee Set will play their match against Tee Set Too at Cengkareng on May 14.
