Gading Raya, Sunday 15th January 2017

The Day

Gading Raya once more treated the 39 Tee Setters with an early start and finish, and pretty good weather for this time of the year, as it only rained for a hole or two. The greens in general, but especially on the first holes, were extremely fast as they were shaved very close for an upcoming tournament.

We had a healthy 5 Newcomers this week: Frida Lidwina, Jon Pipe, Mark Donnelly, Owen Sutherland and Richard Ledgard to whom we wish a warm welcome to Tee Set. We also had our usual Welcome Backs, led by Tracey Ledgard after 69 weeks.

The Play

VP Roger Finnie continued his current streak to again win Low Net A Grade for his net 72. Efsi Hayati won Low Net B Grade with her excellent net 67. The ecstatic Kelly Chaisson, who had the best round of his life which translated into a net 62, won Low Net C Grade.

Mark Manderson was awarded Low gross for his excellent 82 off the stick.

Mark Johnson was unfazed by the fast greens and won Low Putts with 28.

Andrew Waite won First Birdie on his 12th hole.

First Sandy Par was awarded to Alastair Livingston for his effort on his 2nd hole.

img_1615

Debbie Minicola won First Par Over 30 on her 7th hole.

Most Improved went to Jonathan Quek for shaving 9 shots on his back nine.

Debbie Minicola unfortunately had to return half her gains from her First Par Over 30 when she won the less coveted Monster Putter for her 42 putts, to the relief of Richard Green and the President who each had 41 putts.

Most Strokes went to Craig Edwards for his 11 on hole #4, where he sliced 3 drives into the lake, got even more tired after having to walk back to retrieve his driver he had thrown, before regaining his composure and finally putting a ball in play for 7 off the tee.

And finally the Gading Raya blue tees which, in defense of the guilty, seemed to be placed way back on the day, produced 6 skirts, pictured below from left to right: Steven Pettis, Jonathan Quek, Peter Ruffy, Craig Edwards who tried to hide with the wig the fact he said earlier “I never get skirts” and yours truly who has now managed a skirt for 5 events in a row, which even though not confirmed could be a new Tee Set record.

And Dirk Kruip who insisted on an individual picture:

While on the topic of skirts, Sunday there was a fierce debate on what constitutes a skirt, and in rare moment of agreement between the President and the Vice-President of Almost Everything they explained that if a ball enters a side hazard before the red tees it is indeed a skirt!

Cengkareng, 8th January 2017

The Day

img_1502

As the holidays are over and our Tee Setters are slowly coming back, we had a fairly healthy group of 45, and once more unusually dry, sunny and hot conditions for this time of the year, as illustrated by my divot on hole #16.

Including our beautiful ladies pictured below.

dscn0036

One way to cool off was using one of the Cengkareng hoverboards like our Web Guy did and said “worth it .. and a bit of fun too “.

img_1528

And the other one was of course with the now legendary Cengkareng hospitality and Margaritas.

We didn’t have any newcomer playing this week, but a few signed up with Tee Set and will join us soon. We had a couple of Welcome Backs worth mentioning, Mark Manderson after 44 weeks and Boonyarit Jaiya after 33 weeks.

The Play

Unlike last week we had some sub-par net rounds this week, including by all the winners of the Low Net categories pictured below. VP Roger Finnie showed his potential as new Inter-League captain by winning Low Net A Grade for his 68. Andrew Marron, who won Low Net B Grade on a count-back from Stefan Thiele, showed that his first official handicap was no fluke by carding a net 70. Jaturaporn Pibankul won Low Net C Grade with a 69, on a count-back from Jana Gaislerova whose 11 on I think her last hole proved costly, no doubt continuing to push his march towards B Grade.

img_1519

Mark Johnson, who had to leave early to catch his plane, was awarded Low Gross for his 82. Also winning the unofficial “Pinkiest” award, also known as the “I am comfortable enough with my masculinity to wear pink” award. And don’t ask me what Axel is doing in that picture!

img_1520

Boonyarit Jaiya showed that his long absence with us didn’t mean he didn’t practice his putting and won Low Putts with 27.

Manfred Borer won First Birdie on his 2nd hole.

First Sandy Par was awarded to both Kelly Chaisson and Chris Smith for their efforts on their 2nd hole. Which for Kelly was a great improvement after getting a double-skirt and a 10 on his first hole.

First Par Over 30 was awarded to both Kim Pham and Mike Riley for their efforts on their 2nd hole.

Most Improved went to ever smiling Geary Bowles for shaving 16 shots on his back nine after a disastrous 61 on his front nine, during which his 12 on a hole, including 9 shots from the same bunker, gave him a share of Most Strokes.

Kim Pham unfortunately had to return half her gains from her First Par Over 30 when she won the less coveted Monster Putter for her 44 putts.

Most Strokes was shared by Mike Riley and the aforementioned Geary Bowles for their 12 on a hole, even though last week’s winner Kelly Chaisson had a go at it with his 11 on Par 3 hole #4.

And finally once more Cengkareng produced its share of skirts with 9, of which are pictured below: the President who has now managed a skirt for 4 events in a row, Chris Smith, Kelly Chaisson who got a wardrobe on the day, Mike Riley, Laurie O’Connor, Stefan Thiele and Paisan Thanasitsomboon, as well as the excused Dave Chew and Dennis Wee.

You can enjoy more pictures of the day here and consult the player by player results here.

Inter-League

Reminder that the Inter-League will kick-off next month on 19th February at Jagowari. There are 8 rounds planned and these will be held on the 3rd Sunday each month from February to November except for the summer break in July and August. And that new Captain VP Roger Finnie is recruiting, so if you are interested to join the Tee Set team please let Roger know as soon as possible either by email on rogerfinnie@yahoo.com or by catching him at one of the forthcoming events.

Next Up

A return to the popular Gading Raya at 950,000 Rp including cart with a tee off time of 12:00, but don’t be late as if they can they normally let us tee off earlier, so please register here.

Next up: Cengkareng, Sunday 8th January 2017

This week we go back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses, Cengkareng that offers great caddies and staff, arguably the best Margaritas in town and for those who don’t want to walk hoverboards that our Bushy tested during our visit last September, and Mrs Pie during our last visit but was unfortunately not captured.

So if you haven’t done so yet and want to join us for a mere 750,000 Rp and an official tee off time of 12:00 please register here.

Friendly reminder that even though we always accept registrations until the last minute, we do appreciate when they are made before Friday afternoon as it greatly helps us with the preparations.

Other news

2017 Schedule

We are pleased to let you know that your Committee has been and still is hard at work on the proposed schedule for 2017, which you can now see here.  As several of the courses are still under negotiation please be aware that the schedule is likely to change over the course of the year so please remember to check the weekly updates on the website for the current week’s schedule.

The eagle-eyed will note that there are no events shown for BSD and Imperial. This is due to the high prices and/or poor tee times being offered by these courses presently. Your Committee will continue to try and negotiate better arrangements and, if successful, we will make appropriate changes.

Inter-League

The Inter-League will kick-off next month on 19th February with the venue remaining at Jagowari. There are 8 rounds planned and these will be held on the 3rd Sunday each month from February to November except for the summer break in July and August.

This year VP Roger Finnie will Captain the Tee Set team with the support of Ric Wymer who will continue to double up duties on the Inter-League Committee. If you are interested to join the Tee Set team please let Roger know as soon as possible either by email on rogerfinnie@yahoo.com or by catching him at one of the forthcoming events.

Inter-Society Matches

As in 2016 we plan to have 2 Inter-Society matches against Bali Par 5 Club (Battle Royale) and The Dogs on the week-ends of 6th/7th May and 10th/11th June, respectively. Both events will involve a week-end away and further details, including a call for interested players will follow closer to each event. Presently, neither Cup is held by Tee Set so we will be looking to turn the results around from last year’s matches.

Pangkalan Jati, 1st January 2017

The Day

Demonstrating again that quality over quantity is always best, a happy group of 19 Tee Setters overcame the previous night hangovers, and for some sickness, to complete the first round of 2017 in somewhat surprisingly for this time of the year dry, sunny and hot conditions.

whatsapp-image-2017-01-01-at-5-47-16-pm

The improved Pangkalan Jati with its new asphalted cart paths, tables and chairs and navy cement boat (pictured below) was quite challenging, as reflected by the fact for once no net sub-par round was achieved on the day and on the other end some surprisingly high scores were, but everybody was in good spirit before, during and after the round. PJ also allowed the participants to stock up on balls, gloves and honey for the year with their incredible prices.

After the round Mrs Pie shared a cake with everybody to celebrate her 29th birthday.

Later a good contingent continued the celebrations well into the night at the Millers lair, where the President even had to work overtime doubling up as a barman to quench the members thirst.

As today was mainly a hardcore Tee Setters affair we had no newcomers and Jochen Sautter led the Welcome Backs after 11 weeks, followed by the Millers returning from South Africa after 5 weeks.

The Play

img_1437

Richard Mau, whose late arrival forced him to play 2 holes on his own before catching up to complete a foursome, was delighted to have improved his score by 9 from last week at the same venue, merited Low Gross for his 85.

img_1448

Fernando Gaggino, who for his defense was quite sick as reflected by his worst score in ages of 103, still managed to win Low Putts with 27, demonstrating that not even illness affects his putting skills and that his new glasses might be better adapted for pool and putting than long shots.

img_1438

Due to the limited number of Grade A players and since the other ones had already won another prize, birthday girl Santi Miller, who seemed impaired by the New Year celebration of the night before, only managed a net 88, but it was enough to win the Low Net A Grade on the day.

img_1444

Mike Webb, who on his 100th round with Tee Set coincidentally carded a Gross 100, won Low Net B Grade with 75.

img_1441

King Tirto, who had the best net round of the day, won Low Net C Grade for his 72.

img_1457

Jochen Sautter won First Birdie on his 6th hole.

img_1451

The always happy Kelly Chaisson was awarded First Sandy Par after visiting the beach on his 8th hole.

img_1460

Most Improved went to Dede Nielen-Groen for shaving 5 shots on her back nine.

img_1462

Thanks to the one prize rule, President Pastis Pascal won first Par Over 30 for his effort on his 11th hole.

Dede Nielen-Groen once more had her picture taken with her best friend, the Tee Set Monkey, for being awarded Monster Putter for her 43 putts.

img_1418

Most Strokes was awarded to Kelly Chaisson for his 11, who wasn’t charged though because he had already contributed to the skirts fund.

img_1421

Geary Bowles, who also had a rather rough day on the course, was ecstatic to finally get a skirt and insisted to be pictured on his own with it.

img_1387

Joining Geary in this less glamorous category were Pieter Nielen-Groen, Kelly Chaisson who even though argued his OB shot might not have qualified as a skirt paid his fine with a smile, Rob Davies who paid his fine but left before the photo maybe because of his frustration to remain handicap less, and once more the President, who even though he greatly improved his drive of late, managed to get a skirt for the third event in a row. In case you wonder Peter Ruffy didn’t get a skirt but was in a cross-dressing mood so decided to join us for the photo.

You can enjoy more pictures of the day here and consult the player by player results here.

Next Up

A return to the popular Cengkareng (and its famous frozen margaritas) at 750,000 Rp with a tee off time of 12:00, so please register here.

Next up: New Year Event, Pangkalan Jati, Sunday 1st January 2017

This Sunday we are back at Pangkalan Jati  for our first event of the new year 2017, where we will sweat out the excesses of New Year’s Eve and celebrate the returning Mrs Pie birthday.

So if you haven’t done so yet and want to join us for a mere 550,000 Rp, excluding cart, and an official tee off time of 12:00, but don’t be late as we will most likely be able to start earlier, please register here.

Note that PJ offers carts, but be careful when booking them as their policy is to charge by cart, not by player, so you better arrange in advance your co-rider.

Friendly reminder that even though we always accept registrations until the last minute, we do appreciate when they are made before Friday afternoon, as it greatly helps us with the preparations.

Other news

As it is customary at this time of the year, I offer you a bit of retrospective on the year almost gone by consulting here how you improved, or not, your handicap during the year. In which you will see our Most Improved members during 2016 were Stuart Wigley, Tom Grace, the Gaisler Men and Jeff Landau, while at the other end of the spectrum was our always smiling Marcelo De Jesus, I am sure will regain his great handicap in 2017. Which either way I hope will encourage you to add to your New Year’s Resolutions playing more with Tee Set in 2017.

new-years-resolution

As the next time you should hear from us we will already be in 2017, on behalf of the Tee Set committee I wish to all our members and their families a Happy New Year 2017, hopefully filled with golf and joy, hoping to see you all at our January 1 event or in the near future.

Christmas Event, Pangkalan Jati , Saturday 24th December 2016

The Day

Keeping up the Tee Set mantra of “Never a week-end missed in 33 years”, 14 festive Tee Setters turned up to Pangkalan Jati to play the last outing of the year; held on Saturday 24th December so everyone could enjoy their Christmas Day with families and friends.

Thanks to everyone arriving in good time and some helpful organization by the Caddy Master, we were treated to an excellent day of golf. An early tee off, a clear gap for our 4 groups on both the front and back nine’s and fantastic weather all led to us being finished by 3.35pm and all off home by 4.30pm after beers and the prize giving.

The Play

With only 14 players, it was an opportunity for everyone to get some form of recognition and by the end of the day we did indeed have all 14 players with honorable mentions for either great effort and/or great success as the case may be. Our small group also meant that we gave the secretaries a welcome week-end off with the scoring being done manually by VP Roger Finnie. Apologies therefore if there are any quirks in the presentation of the results.

Monster putter was distinctly a family affair with Dede just edging out Pieter with her 42 putts but, as Pieter mentioned, it was a result which was “sama-sama” to the wallet.

Although we were a small group, the harvest of skirts was still strong with 42% of the male playing contingent contribution to the Tee Set coffers. Pieter being joined by Anlo, Joe, Pekka and Karan. Whilst Karan was spared any further monetary penalty for his most strokes (11), Joe was able to recoup his losses through Most Improved over the back nine (9) clearly benefiting from the warm up front nine after 25 weeks away.

Joe just pipped Peter Ruffy and Laurie O’Connor on the most improved but Peter’s storming back nine including 2 birdies was enough for him to win Best Net B Grade, joining Anlo du Pisani and Mike Webb who took home the money for Best Net A and C Grades, respectively. Mike’s 69 net was the best of the day with Roger’s 84 good enough for Low Gross.

On the skills prizes, Tom Grace took home the first and only sandy par of the day for his effort on hole 10 and Chris Lever, who had to leave early and therefore missed a photo opportunity, won 1st birdie for his effort on the Par 3 3rd hole. With the low putters having already won prizes and the next best scores being closer to the monster putter than low putts, the VP took an executive decision to preserve the Tee Set coffers and not award this prize.

Especially for our most recent members a reminder that you can find all kind of valuable information on our website and consult your handicap or at least the rounds you played towards the 5 minimum ones to get one by entering your name here.

Next Up

Thank you to everyone who turned up today to support Tee Set and for those who missed this week, there is a chance to make up for it as we will be back to Pangkalan Jati for round 2 of our double header at our former home course to welcome 2017 and celebrate the returning Mrs Pie birthday on Sunday 1st January for a mere 550,000 Rp without cart, even though some are available, with a tee off time of 12:00 or maybe earlier, so please register here.

In the meantime, the Committee wishes all Tee Setters and their families a very Merry Christmas and all the best wishes for a healthy, prosperous and golf filled New Year.

Special Thanks to VP Roger Finnie who “held the fort” yesterday and basically wrote this post.

Reminder that our special Christmas event where you are encouraged to dress up, will be held tomorrow Saturday, not on Sunday like normally, at Pangkalan Jati.
