Monthly Medal, Imperial Golf Klub , Sunday 18th December 2016

The Day

What looked like a rather quiet day for a Monthly Medal turned out to be quite busy with 50 players thanks to late and very late registrations more than offsetting a few cancellations, which along with the discovery of the fact the hole indexes were not properly factored on our scorecards caused a bit of headaches for the committee, but didn’t stop us from having a great day where everybody finished before sundown and with a minimum amount of rain for this time of the year.

We welcomed 4 new Tee Setters: Jonathan Quek, Pak Sugeng Susilo (father of Dian Novita who joined Tee Set last week), Simo Vaananen who joined our increasing Finn contingent, and William Wong to whom we wish a warm welcome to Tee Set.

We welcomed back Jeff Durham after 18 weeks and the Thai quatuor of Chakkapong Yingwattanat, Jirathpol Sunsap, Kasana Kaewwijit and Piboon Sirinantanakol whose 16 weeks absence probably explained why they forgot to register and turn in their cards after their round.

Note that as Modern will be our new Monthly Medal home in 2017, the first round of Eclectic Cycle 5 will be when we play there in January, so today didn’t count for the Eclectic.

Some Tee Setters (pictured here) were later spotted winding down at Star Deli and some others (not pictured) a bit more up north.

The Play

After a few last minute revisions not reflected above, the prizes were awarded as follows.

Low Gross went to Richard Mau for his 86 even though Andrew Waite had an 85 and Roger Finnie 86 but were awarded other prizes below.

Low Net A Grade was awarded to Roger Finnie for his net 74, Low Net B Grade to Andrew Waite for his net 67 and Low Net C Grade to Paisan Thanasitsom for his net 68.

James Ross won Low Putts for his 29.

First Birdie went to Don Duttlinger for his effort on his first hole.

One of our oldest member, Lina Bunter won First Par over 30 on her 7th hole.

First Sandy Par would have gone to Mark Johnson who was OB.

Most Improved was awarded to Jari Rahtu for his 9 shots improvement, as Rob Davies who improved by 10 was OB, which on the other end saved him from getting Most Strokes for his 14 on a hole.

Closest to the PIN went to Mick Dodsworth on hole #5 for his brilliant shot that almost went in and would have made his investment in the hole in one a lucrative one, but ended up 2’6” from the hole.

Longest Drive Men was awarded to Simo Vaananen for his 238 yards effort.

While Lis Wymer won Longest Drive Ladies for her 242 yards tee shot, we suspect might have been measured from the blue tees.

And the biggest prize of them all, the Monthly Medal, was won by Efsi Hayati with 42 stableford points after adjusting her scorecard with the proper hole indexes, leaving Andrew Waite and Paisan Thanasitsomboon as runners-up with their 40 points. For her brilliant performance Efsi not only earned a medal and her nameplate on the Monthly Medal Shield but also received 2 Cengkareng free weekend round certificates.

And in the less glamorous prizes section, Dian Novita, maybe helped by the added pressure of playing with her father, earned the Monster Putter for her 43 shots with the flat stick, but kept her smile.

And finally we had a harvest of 7 Skirts representing the multi-nationalities of Tee Set with: Andrew Marron, Bill Lloyd, Chris Smith, Karel Horak, Manfred Borer, Pekka Kivioja and once more yours truly for my poor effort on a par 3.

You can enjoy more pictures of the day here and consult the player by player results here.

Especially for our most recent members a reminder that you can find all kind of valuable information on our website and consult your handicap or at least the rounds you played towards the 5 minimum ones to get one by entering your name here.

Next Up

Cengkareng, 11th December 2016

The Day

Even though as expected in December we had a bit of rain, our 51 players (3 not reflected above because they didn’t turn in their card) managed to complete their round in a relatively quick time for Cengkareng, and so in quite pleasant breezy conditions.

We once more had a healthy 6 newcomers: Apinan Emem, Armand, Bruno Damblant, Dian Novita, Jonathan and Nick Dendy to whom we wish a warm welcome to Tee Set:

We also had a lot of old Tee Setters who joined us, maybe resulting in some record Welcome Backs, lead by Dennis Ryan after 119 weeks, Rob Davies after 92 and Rocky Wanglei after 90.

The Play

Low Gross went to Simon Reynolds for his 83, on a countback from Marcelo de Jesus and Geary Bowles who also shot an excellent 83 off the stick.

But Geary was instead awarded the Low Net A Grade for his 68, while Efsi Hayati won Low Net B Grade for her 66 and Jaturaporn Pikanbul won Low Net C Grade for another amazing performance culminating in a net 61 that will no doubt contribute to his ever decreasing handicap and his march towards the B Grade.

Tom Grace won Low Putts for his 29 on a countback with 5 players, but Tom was even more ecstatic about the birdie he got on #18 after having to take a drop for a penalty.

To the treasurer’s chagrin First Birdie was awarded to 3 players for their effort on their first hole: Joseph d’Cruz, Roger Finnie and Gerald Schmidt who had his best game ever, in what was his last one with Tee Set at least for a while as he is leaving Indonesia, but promised to come back and visit us and told me he would avidly continue reading our weekly newsletter.

Pieter Nielen-Groen having fully recovered from his foot injury managed to get the First Sandy Par on his 8th hole, as Mark Johnson was OB, but Pieter sounded even more thrilled by the fact he managed to avoid going to a wedding to be with us.

The ever improving Lis Wymer won First Par over 30 on her second hole.

Dennis Ryan shook off the rust of not playing with Tee Set for more than 2 years to win Most Improved with 14.

And in the less glamorous prizes section, the visiting Bruno Damblant earned the Monster Putter for his 40 with Ric’s old putter now part of the Tee Set rental bag he otherwise loved. While Cucu who seemed to have been distracted by the hoverboard she rented to play her worst round in quite a while, including an 11 on a hole to win Most Strokes, was still very happy with her day.

And finally as usual Cengkareng provided a fair amount of 9 Skirts for: Chris Smith, Dennis Ryan, Jaturaporn which obviously didn’t impact his game, Mark Johnson who doesn’t often join this select club, Mike Riley who didn’t seem to want to miss any photo opportunity with the pink, Pekka Kivioja, Pieter Nielen-Groen, Rob Davies who for his defense hadn’t played for almost 2 years, and yours truly.

Other Awards

Wina Nugraha was presented her runner-up trophy for her performance in this year Tee Set Match Play competition, she wasn’t during the Championship, as for those who forgot she was playing a second 18 holes during the ceremony.

And finally Mike Webb was over the moon to have won the lucky draw of the 2 Cengkareng free weekend round certificates, especially since he said he never wins anything, and was seen making new friends with people who wanted to join him when he redeems them.

You can enjoy more pictures of the day here and consult the player by player results here.

Next Up

A return to the Imperial Golf Klub with a K for our last Monthly Medal there before our move to Modern next year, at 770,000 Rp including cart with a tee off time of 12:30, so please register here.

Next up: Cengkareng, Sunday 11th December 2016

This week we go back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses, Cengkareng that offers great caddies and staff, arguably the best Margaritas in town and for those who don’t want to walk hoverboards that our Bushy tested during our last visit in September.

So if you haven’t done so yet and want to join us for a mere 750,000 Rp and an official tee off time of 12:00 please register here.

Friendly reminder that even though we always accept registrations until the last minute, we do appreciate when they are made before Friday afternoon as it greatly helps us with the preparations.

Other news

This week I finally received the photographer pictures of the Tee Set Championship, so they can now be viewed here along with the previous ones of that great day.

Our friends of the Bali Par 5 Club are organizing a golf trip to Thailand from March 26 to April 2, for further details please contact Tony (+6282145214112) or Derrick (+6281236728089).

Gading Raya, 4th December 2016

2016-12-04-gading-raya-summary

The Day

Thanks to the announced earlier than scheduled tee time, most players got an early start and managed to finish early even though the skies opened up at around noon and the rain persisted all afternoon, which some even tried to blame on the new president. Only a few players called it quits, but amazingly enough Bill Lloyd and his foursome turned up at 6pm, some 2 hours later than most and while the prizes ceremony was already well underway.

We had a healthy 6 newcomers: Andrew McDermott, John Melsheimer, John Paul Salgado, Juju Juhairiah, Martin Steinhauser and Mark Sheppard and the usual Welcome Backs topped by Nick Shearman with 9 weeks, but unfortunately a last minute cancellation from our friend Pieter Nielen-Groen who injured his foot and to whom we wish a prompt recovery and return to Tee Set.

img_1143

To counter the early closing time of Gading Raya, the ex-committee members and some Tee Setters decided to visit the new president’s man cave for some billiard and visit the old Eclectic trophy in its final resting place, pictured here with the Singing ex-President.

The Play

2016-12-04-gading-raya-resultsDue to various factors including the one prize rule, some people being OB and a lot of draws most of the winners were determined by the normal criteria and count backs, while a couple were more by executive power.

Low Gross went to Mark Johnson for his 82, while Roger Finnie who tied him was awarded Low Net A Grade for his 70 on a count back from Craig Binks. Low Net B Grade was first awarded to Norman Bunter for his 71, but when Bill Lloyd later showed up with his 70 he was also awarded by presidential decree the coveted Rp100,000. While Low Net C Grade was handed out to Lis Wymer for her 69 also achieved by last week champion Mick Dodsworth.

Based on the one prize rule Low Putts was awarded to Fernando Gaggino for his 26, even though Mark Johnson only had his normal 24. First Par over 30 was won by Lina Bunter for her effort on the 4th hole.

First Sandy Par went to James Ross for his nice recovery on his first hole while First Birdie went to Craig Edwards for his excellent approach that almost went in on the second hole of his up and down round.

Even in the dreary conditions only 4 skirts were reported, including 3 regular recipients: President Pastis Pascal, ex-VP Mel Cantarella who had conveniently left the room during the award to no doubt try to evade the photo but was later caught for a private one and Ricardo Oliveira on his last game before going back to Portugal he couldn’t possibly have completed without a skirt and newcomer Martin Steinhauser.

img_1113

In order to avoid discouraging newcomers Andrew McDermott and Martin Steinhauser on their first Tee Set round, the Monster Putter was instead bestowed on the Singing ex-President Craig Ewers for his 38 putts.

img_1089

An unofficial recognition as “lumberjack of the day” was given to Glen Menyennett for the number of trees he hit on the day, while still smiling.

And finally Most Improved who should have gone to Dennis Wee for his 12 was not awarded as he was OB, so was Most Stroke because Martin Steinhauser with 12 had already paid for his skirt and much to the chagrin of the treasurer charging instead the 6 people on 10 might have been harsh.

You can enjoy more pictures of the day here and consult the player by player results here.

Next Up

A return to the popular Cengkareng (and its famous frozen margaritas) at 750,000 Rp with a tee off time of 12:00, so please register here.

Reminder: Gading Raya, 4th December 2016

As we are getting over the Championship hangover, still trying to locate some of the pictures of it, but on the bright side most of the lost items have been recovered including James Young bag, this Sunday we are heading back to one of our favorite courses Gading Raya.

So for 850,000 Rp, including cart, and an official tee off time of 11:48am, but judging by last month when they let some of us tee off at around 11am, don’t be late. And for those who haven’t done it yet please register here.

Tee Set 2016 Championship, Matoa Nasional, 27th November 2016

img-20161127-wa0004-4

The Day

An unusually early wake-up time for Tee Setters was offset by breakfast and dawn cocktails.  Far too many no-shows forced last minute flights re-organizations, but following the traditional group picture, with the not so traditional drone this year, almost 100 Tee Setters managed to tee off on the shotgun start.  But not even the frozen smoothies could save us from the heat, as we cannot remember a warmer start to the morning, with the sun at full heat at 8am only to give way to more humid conditions as the day went on.  We took casualties, with one early return to the clubhouse and a number of others drenching themselves with cool water and having a lie down between holes.  Of course, the casualties would increase later in the day, but for other reasons.

img-20161128-wa0004

The Play

Chris Smith won Closest to the PIN with 1,4 m and after voting an exception to the “one prize rule” also won First Birdie for his first shot of the day on hole #12 while Kees de Korver won the Lucky Draw amongst the around 20 people who managed to land their tee shot on the hole #12 green.

30490045184_749ed621f7_o

Peter Bush managed to keep it in the fairway to win Longest Drive for men with 265m, while Cucu Chandra hit it 185m to win the honour for the women.

On the course Peter Nielen-Groen won ‘Nearest to the Brenda’ with 11m, but seemed very happy to get much closer to her here:

First Sandy Par went to Nick Thomas on his second hole.

First Par over 30, on his 4th hole, was awarded to president-elect Pastis Pascal.

31197053381_31af8651c2_o

Low Putts with 24, after a count back, went to Anthony King with special mentions to Craig Binks and Sugih Prihatin who also only needed 24 putts on the day.

30943636180_85901c9e76_o

Stuart Wigley with a 75 took home the George Bevege Trophy for Low Gross.

30504208883_23b833b03d_o

And the biggest prize of the day, Tee Set 2016 Champion with a net 66 went to Mick Dodsworth, who seemed to have been invigorated by his trek up the Himalayas and a sneaky little practice round on Friday afternoon with the Singing President where he showed some form, their tee shots captured by our spies at Senayan here.

Following Mick, 3 were tied on net 68, but after a count back Barbora Gaislerova was declared runner-up, Divya Prakash third and John Suermondt fourth.

Complete player by player results can be found here.

Yearly awards

Also recognized for their performances throughout the year 2016:

Jaroslav Gaisler won the Best Net Average 2016 with a 71.9 while Jeff Landau won the Best Gross Average 2016 with 80.9

Matchplay Champion 2016, James Ross, who received our new magnificent perpetual trophy to hold for a year, already assured the new President he would again organize that competition next year.

Also recognized was Matchplay runner-up Wina Nugraha, who showed her determination to win it next year by actually playing 36 holes at Matoa on Sunday.

The winners of the Eclectic in 2016: Fernando, Pascal and Jaturaporn were immortalized with the new permanent Eclectic trophy Jaturaporn took home for 4 months until the next cycle winner is decided.

31197055281_0421f6a4ca_o

The winners (Srikandi) and runners-up (Team GB and Team India) of the first Tee Set World Cup were also rewarded.

30943630990_f51fe584e5_o

As the mood seemed more joyful than normally, the booby prizes were not really considered on the day, including the Skirts that on record only King and Jari would have got, but Andrew McKelvie was awarded the Tee Set Skirt Queen title for 2016 for his high 0.6 propensity during the year.

The Elections

After the bunch of door prizes were awarded, the results of the election for the new Tee Set President were announced and as soon as Pastis Pascal was declared the winner he asked the defeated Roger Finnie to join him on the new committee as Vice-President, joining the perpetual V-P Ric.

After a short speech from the new President, who first shocked the audience by jokingly saying French would now be the official language of Tee Set, and then more seriously thanked the hard work of the of Championship Director Ric Wymer, the Web Guy Keith Miller who as usual did great work in the shadows on the banners, statistics, etc. that can be seen here, our lovely secretaries Brenda and Aisha and of course the now Singing ex-President, it was down to the partying.

The Party

In true Tee Set spirit the singing, partying and dancing was wild, up to the point that when the Band from Bandung sponsored by Geoff T and Kojo tried to stop the music, some generous Tee Setters chipped him to have them go a bit longer. We again also distinguished ourselves in the drinking department, as the 4 gallons of margaritas disappeared rather quickly, so did the rest of the drinks, last but not least the new President Pastis that was shared in the “poisoned chalice”.

The traditional sunset three club challenge was too much for us after a massive day.  A few Tee Set stalwarts were seen struggling to leave the premises, but the hardened ones including the Champion and new President were later spotted around a pool table in South Jakarta.

Even though we are still missing a lot of them, you can already enjoy hundreds of pictures of the day here.

Thanks also to the Tee Set Championship Sponsors, helpers and staff at Matoa for a great day.

Lost and Found

James Young still hasn’t recovered his Titleist valuables bag lost in Matoa. It is a small, red bag with Titleist stitched in White. It contains his set of keys, some meds and some other ancillary items, so if anybody has it, let us know.

Pascal found the following hat and glasses left behind in Matoa, contact him if they are yours.

20161129_120202

Next Up

A return to the popular Gading Raya at 850,000 Rp with an official tee off time of 11:48am, but judging by last month when they let some of us tee off at around 11am, don’t be late. Register here.

And its back to golf….and singing

gone-golfingA quick note to wish the incoming President Pascal and Vice Presidents Roger and Ric all the best for the 2017 year.  I think my title is now the Singing Ex-Prez. I enjoyed what we all achieved together in Tee Set over the last two years and am now looking forward to enjoying the benefits as a player.

Thanks to Ric, Keith and Brenda especially for all your work as well as Pascal for stepping up for the Monthly Medals, to James for Matchplay, to Wina for course bookings and for everyone who has helped with special events and collecting fees at the start of each round.

My last official duty is to prepare and submit the annial report for 2016 to the new committee and Tee Set membership. This summarises stats and financials for the last year up to the Championships. I hope to hand this over in December.

The rundown of Sunday’s awesome Championships day is on its way, but for now, that’s me out, and as we say at Tee Set, see ya Sunday!

2016 Tee Set Championships

2016-tsc-bannerThe great day is nearly upon us and, despite the absence in Singapore of Tournament Director Ric Wymer, all is fully-under-control-chaos with his Whatsapp red-hot working overtime in whipping the dilatory into shape from afar.

2016-tsc-schedule

The club itself will be taking your 1,000,000Rp participation fee on arrival, nothing more to pay. We had something of an issue with the club cashier last time we were there so, please, make sure you receive and keep your receipt to avoid any problems.

As you pay, you will be handed a voting slip for the election of the President and Vice President positions, please complete this as soon as you have made your mind up and put it into the clearly and professionally marked box thoughtfully provided.

Details of your locker number are posted on the notice boards along with your flight details, handicap etc. Your locker will have your name on it and inside will be an assortment of goodies thanks to our sponsors, and most importantly your super stylish 2016/17 Tee Set shirt. Please put it on straight away.

The earliness of the hour means that we will provide a solid breakfast and heart-starters in the shape of Bloody Marys and Jack Calcote’s legendary smoothies, just to get you in prime condition for the rigors of the day.

The first of those rigors will be the taking of team photos and the drone video which will happen promptly at 06:45 after which you should find your cart and get to your allocated tee in time for the shotgun going off at 7am on the dot. PLEASE make sure you are changed into your new shirt before the photo!!

The Championships are a stroke play event.  Gimmie circles will be marked to allow consistency in conceding putts. Putts should be given if any part of the ball is touching the circle.

Inputting and validating scores takes a while with a field as large as we have for the Championship, so it is even more important than usual that you FULLY complete your cards and hand them over to Brenda as soon as you have checked and added them up – and BEFORE showering!!

After showering it is downhill all the way with the usual spread of exotic foods and beverages to be consumed to the sound of the Band from Bandung doing their thing courtesy of sponsor Geoff T and Kojo.  On the question of beverages, the first to be finished in recent years have been the frozen Margaritas, however this will NOT happen in 2016. Guaranteed.

Prizes will be provided for Lowest Net (Champion), Runner Up and Low Gross (the George Bevege Trophy).  There will also be new perpetual trophies for Matchplay Champion, won this year by James Ross and the Eclectic Champion, won this cycle by Jaturaporn Pikanbul.  It is important to note that, as always, the Handicap related prizes can only be won by players with an official Tee Set handicap who have played at least 5 times since the last Championship.  There will also be yearly “top of the table” prizes – based on some very sharp analysis by the Web Guy, which you will see posted on the walls, skills prizes for longest drive and nearest to the pin, and oodles and oodles of door prizes.

The Singing President will then step down and the election of the President and Vice Presidents will take place.

And then the games begin.  Something of a tradition has grown up at the Championship for an intensely disorganised and informal “Tee Set’s Got Talent” comp starting up after the prize giving and we are not about to discourage the variety of Tee Setters who get up to exercise their vocal ch0rds and much else besides – quite the contrary as there will be a bottle of wine of your choice for the biggest talent we see in the first hour – chosen by rather undemocratic open outcry of course, so get your mates lined up.  If you are still able to stand by sunset, you can join the three club challenge played over two holes.

Finally, if you suddenly discover that you cannot play for whatever reason, then it is absolutely essential that you let us know immediately.

See ya at the Championship! … Tee Set

PS don’t forget to set your alarm before you go to sleep on Saturday night!

PPS LATE BREAKING NEWS

Last minute drop outs meant that we can offer a couple of places that have become available ….. contact us here if you are up to the rigors of Tee Set’s premier day. First come first served.

Oh…and Laurie O’Three Putt has a Matoa golf membership and a house for sale/lease – we tried to get him to donate both as prizes but for some reason he wasn’t feeling that generous – for details, click here.

Jagorawi, 20th November 2016

jags-hilites

The day

Last Interleague event to decide the eventual champion and it went down to the wire. Cloggies eventually held their nerve to get past the line against a determined Mad Dogs team. Final result was a 6 – 4 win to Mad Dogs, not quite enough to leapfrog the Cloggies. Congratulations to the men (and ladies) in orange..

Tee Set playing for pride alone and managed to beat Pocksia 6 – 4 to take 4th place. 5 wins from 7 games sounds good on paper but two rounds with zero points killed our 2016 campaign. Always next year.

tbfb

The end of season celebrations started around 3pm and belted on till dark when the Bandung Band finally switched off the power around 6pm. Thanks to Geoff Thwaites for sponsoring their trip down the mountain.

Thanks also to Kees De Korver for cooking up the chili beans and smoked chicken, mouthwatering as were the home cooked apple pies provided by Iris.

Well done to the JIL Committee for running another successful year of match play.

The play

jags-summary

Mike Riley’s first ever birdie and he got it on hole #1. Made him feel like a real golfer. 22 golfers on the day including the 8 that played Interleague match play.

Malty Suermondt got a par for h/c +30 on hole #2. Although no prizes given out today due to Interleague they will get a free pass for their next normal Tee Set event as will Simon Reynolds for shooting a low gross 80.

More details, player by player, here.

A reminder to all sponsors

Could all our generous sponsors please note to send their banners and items for the goodie bags to Ric’s place at Jl. Pejatan Barat 1/1A by no later than Saturday 26th November?

Ric is out of the country until Friday night and doesn’t have any time left to coordinate by individual emails. The stuff can also be sent direct to Matoa if you wish, that would be even better!

Next up

We guess that you will not need reminding that next Sunday sees the Tee Set Championship at Matoa. A full list of participants here …. better let us know pronto if you think you should be on there – and aren’t. If you have to pull out for any reason then let us know immediately or you will screw up all our careful planning!

Participation fee: 1,000,000 including shared cart and much, much else besides

Check in starts: 6am

Group photos and drone video: 6.45am

Shotgun start from 13 holes: 7am

If you haven’t registered for the Championship, and want to, then the bad news is that we are full, more than full, remember to register earlier next year!
