JagorawiA last chance to practice with Tee Set before the Championship at the lovely Jagorawi on Sunday, the last day of the 2016 Interleague Season when the Tee Set Team will be looking to consolidate their season with a strong performance against Pocksia.

After play there will be the usual end-of-season prize awards and general merriment as everyone gets into the array of food and beer on offer with some notable contributions from the leading lights of the Interleague.

Championship warmup @ Matoa – 13 November 2016

The Day

Dreary skies and early morning rain put off some, but a pretty healthy 36 Tee Setters took advantage of the fine weather that had arrived by 10 o’clock – when a quiet course meant that 5 groups were already away by 11:00 against an advertised starting time of 11:30.  The Starter got a deserved tip – and that is something that hasn’t happened too often recently.

A couple of minor short-lived rain periods as the round wore on did nothing to slow down anyone, far less stop them, though it was to get heavier and more troublesome for the groups out late on their last hole or two. Overall most of the round played in overcast and cool conditions, thereby approximating to a fine English Summer’s day 🙂

laurieA small hardcore went to on to the Web Guy’s man cave for coffee and hot pies in order to discuss Tee Set past and future and solve a large number of the world’s current issues besides.

Proof, if proof be needed, of the coffee drinking nature of the gathering here as Laurie O’Threeput downs a cappuccino around 11pm.

Most issues were resolved amicably however nobody took notes and all the solutions are therefore, and regrettably, consigned to the dustbin of history 😦

The Play

Biggest highlight perhaps was Billy Lloyd being lucky not to be disqualified by the committee for shooting 9 under his handicap to win Low Net – B Grade with a 63! … what is even more surprising is that he would allow himself to shoot such a score two weeks before the Championship!

It is clear that Bill has failed to take on the important concept of handicap retention – and we are pleased to confirm that Bill’s card has already been uploaded for serious handicap adjustment 🙂

Ken Runyon and Stuart Wigley competed for excellence at the top of A-Grade with Ken taking Low Net with a 69 while Stuart shot the same 78 as Ken off the stick to take Low Gross instead.

Low Net winners were completed by John Suermondt in C-Grade, a man who has the happy knack of generally shooting at or close to his large handicap!

skirtsFor the first time in a very long time we had just one Skirt to award at Matoa, traditionally not a course where the Treasure gathers in too much in the way of Skirt fines so well done to Steven Pattis who had the privilege of getting to wear our full suite of Skirt paraphernalia all on his own.

As you will see opposite, Matoa does not feature in the all-time Top 20 skirt league table. Interestingly however ALL 5 of the top 5 Skirt revenue generating events took place in 2016!

Monster Putter was not “awarded” this week by Vice-Presidential decree. Some whisperings about KKN but we were reminded by former president Geoff Thwaite’s wise dictum of some years back that “Tee Set is not a democracy.”

2016 Tee Set Matchplay Championship

Sunday at Matoa also saw Wina living up to her nickname of “just in time” by arriving for her Match Play final against James Ross with just 10 minutes to spare before official tee time!!

There was murmurings that this was a bit of gamesmanship to unsettle a James Ross seen to be sweating rather more than usual; nerves perhaps? Nevertheless the ploy backfired as Wini’s putting prowess deserted her and as a result was down 5 holes at the turn.

Hard to come back from such a deficit of course and the game was decided on the 15th with a win to James 4 and 3. Congratulations to James on becoming Tee Set Matchplay Champion 2016 and to Wina for reaching the final for the first time.

James enjoyed running the competition so much that he’s volunteered to run it again next year. Well done James – and many thanks for a job well done and we all look forward to some fiercely contested match play rounds next year, with Wina already seen practicing to go one better in 2017.

Tee Set Championship

All looking good for the 27th at Matoa with preparations for everything well advanced. The overall format will be the same as in recent years and the schedule approximately as follows:

The player list for the Championship is long closed, however, we do have a waiting list if you want to go on it and take your chances, drop us an e-mail if so.

Election of officials

ballotAn important issue to be resolved at the Championship is of course the election of officials, ie President and Vice-Presidents, for the 2016/2017 Season. Should you wish to nominate a President or a Vice-President (up to 3) then that is not more difficult than e-mailing us your nomination(s).

It is important to make sure that your nomination(s) are ok with the nominee beforehand.

End of Interleague Season bash at Jags next Sunday with Tee Set playing their last match of the season against Pocksia. Everyone else is welcome to join what should be a great day with a BBQ and 2 barrels of Heineken thrown in at the end.

We say good bye this week to Jan Janda, a quiet and much appreciated behind the scenes contributor to Tee Set, as he leaves Indonesia.

Jan organised the Stay and Play weekends and helped us whenever we needed some beer that tastes like beer or wine. Thanks Jan and best of luck for you and your family!!!

Upcoming events: Interleague End of Season Round, 20th November 2016

While reigning champ, Tee Set, is out of the running this year after roller coaster performances, we want to support the last round of the Interleague competition and are scheduling the Tee Set Round at Jagorawi on 20th November.  For a registration fee of 150k, there will be a hearty meal and lots of beer.  Tee off will be immediately following the interleague matches at 930am.

Tee Set World Cup Final Result: Sunday 6th November 2016, Riverside

Yes, the Ladies of Srikandi, our all women Indonesian team, won the inaugural Tee Set World Cup, in the end by a comfortable margin, thanks to a captain’s performance by Wina, who also took Most Valuable Player.  Wina somehow managed to fulfil other commitments and turn up “Just in Time” to complete her singles round in the dark and bring the trophy home for the Mera Putih.  Well done ladies, a proud day for Mel, the VP of Ladies Recruitment and Member Benefits!!!

30755838682_a97117692a_zTeam GB1 played solid golf to take second place.  Mike and Stuart had a few ball problems, with Stuart eventually finishing his round a little earlier than plan to go and sort his out.

Despite all attempts to sort out the ball confusion over drinks, the mystery was never adequately solved, but the drinks were good.

For Team India, our third place getter, Captain KK did a great job putting the team together for a second week running, and the blue shirts were up there with the Finns uniforms for best dressed, although the hats probably won it for the Finns.  Thanks guys for making such an effort!

wc-team-tablewc-singles-tableIndividual play was nowhere near as good as when playing the previous week as a team but some great individual efforts over the two weeks from Wina (Srikandi) who took the singles prize from Tom (Great Lakes Alliance) and Simon (GB1) in the third place. Husband and wife Ric and Lis both played well, having the same net score, in both legs – can’t argue about that guys!

30755839052_6212030494_zThanks to Riverside for the event and apologies for being such an inconvenience on what you clearly knew was a busy tournament day.  Even with our start delayed until after 1pm, we clearly stopped your caddies having a decent break between rounds and made them work into the dark.  Had we known we would have been such a burden, we would have maintained our scheduled booking at the lovely Bogor Raya. Riverside is an outstanding course, which polarises Tee Setters – some love it and some struggle – but a combination of factors has caused us to recommend a change of venue for the event next year.

However, before we leave Riverside, the club generously acknowledged Ian Butcher’s Hole in One in the first round of the World Cup, with Simon presenting a memento of his feat to Ian here:

30571206200_0db800a00f_zThe post-match was as pleasant as ever, with spare bottles of wine being distributed among the groups.  Thanks to Brenda, Aisha, Bebe, Ric, Keith and all the captains for making the event a lot of fun and producing a fair result in what was an experimental format that still leaves some a little confused, not least some of the committee despite having devised it.

The rain will not dampen the spirit of the Finns  but some other teams, including the leading Srikandi All Ladies team, are struggling to reunite for the grand finale singles on Sunday at Riverside.  Tee off is at 1230 through a semi shot gun start.

Tee Set is a FUN GOLF SOCIETY.  This means it has to be fun for everyone involved, including our Secretary, the golf club staff serving us and the caddies.  Caddies are a particularly important part of the golf scene in Jakarta and add to the enjoyment of the day.

 

Some are very good at reading putts, choosing clubs and estimating distance but treat this as a bonus.  All of these things are YOUR responsibility as a player and not your caddy’s.  If you miss a putt, it was probably because you hit it at the wrong speed or your club face was not square at impact…not your caddy’s fault.  Their read may be wrong but then you are the mug for accepting it.  If caddies are new or don’t know what they are doing, help them out, or ask their fellow caddies to help them out.

In short, be respectful to caddies, so they also have fun.  Remember Tee Set is a FUN GOLF SOCIETY….that means FUN FOR ALL INVOLVED.

Pangkalan Jati, Sunday April 18th 2004

That every cloud has a silver lining proved to be a true enough adage recently when, following a loss of laptop and cash from his car a couple of months ago, the Vice President of Almost Everything came across a Tee Set newsletter from more than 12 years ago as he worked feverishly to recover some data from an old USB drive.

The post, from April 2004, is now the oldest you will find on our website – and penned by the much missed Matt Harter who passed away a little more than three years ago. It is clear that Matt set a very high bar with his weekly musings all that time ago and one that his successors have tried hard to live up to, have gotten close, but maybe never quite matched 🙂

Lots of historical, and even a few current Tee Setters in here, some Pommie abuse, the starter inserting groups on the 10th and insight into how we arrived where we are today, not least in terms of handicapping and a preoccupation with 19th hole tinctures. Enjoy!

PANGKALAN JATI, SUNDAY, APRIL 18, 2004

old-tee-set-logoDue to Bogor activities only 9 Tee Set golfers fronted on Sunday to an almost deserted Pangkalan Jati. The planned  kick off was disregarded as two flights slipped past the starter at 10:30 followed by a couple of stragglers at the official tee off time of 11:30. All was going well until the starter jumped 4 groups in front of tee set as we came to hole 10th . Being a really cool group we just waited our turn and put the starters tip back in the pocket. Still a fun day was had by even if the scoring didn’t set the golf world on fire.

Yes it was Jack Calcote, with a LOW NET win for his 73. He easily beat out 2 other Tee Setters, John Murt and Chris Utting. There was a brief moment when the crowd thought that the Committee had played favorites, but it was quickly cleared up that Alan Clark was not carrying an official Tee Set handicap yet (see bully pulpit below).

Bob McLeod eked out a LOW GROSS win with an 83. Not sterling golf by his standards, but easily the best of the day for our group. The 1ST BIRDIE prize was collected by Paul Palthe for his birdie 3 on the relatively virgin Hole #2. I think this hole is tough for Tee Setters because although many of us hang out with them (please watch for double-entendres), we are not per se hookers ourselves, making it difficult to make that left turn.

Matt Harter took home 1ST SANDY for a par on the very same hole. On Sunday, Matt could have found the sand from anywhere, left or right. Nita Adjis came close to setting a modern-day Tee Set record with a 16-stroke improvement, to win MOST IMPROVED. Of course a 61 on the front nine gets you halfway home for this prize.

LOW PUTTS was really low this week, with Mick Mongold only taking 26. His score would indicate that he was chipping it close and not until after hacking it through the countryside as well. His hopes of a good score didn’t end until a triple-triple finish on 17 and 18, saw him lose 6 shots to par in only two holes. And Mick’s lovely playing partner, Diana Mongold managed a familiar Tee Set double, when she took home 1ST PAR for a par on Hole #5, where she avoided the water hazards galore, only to part with half of here winnings for 39 putts and the MONSTER PUTTER.

Diana had a glimmer of a chance, when Elis Utting posted her putting score, only to lose by a whisker in a double-secret countback.

19th Hole Observations

John Murt told me to make sure that I welcomed back Paul Palthe, who was kept away from Tee Set last week because he had a new Mona. No, I have met Paul’s lovely wife, so it couldn’t have been that. Maybe he said nude moaner, but that doesn’t sound quite correct either. Perhaps I misunderstood John’s heavy English accent and he said pneumonia. Anyway, we were glad to see Paul up and about.

Tuti Potter just flew in from Canada and her brain has not adjusted to Tee Set thinking, as she tried to use a 132 handicap, to offset here 123 gross score for a minus 9 net. Perhaps she was also affected by a late anniversary celebration at Oskar’s pub, where I and several other Tee Setters happened to bump into each other, until about 1:30 AM.

Tee Set would like to welcome back Brian and Ann McKinnon, who managed to join with us in April this year, but thought that our golf game was just too advanced for them. They informed VP Murt that they didn’t know that we accepted hookers hackers.

I also want to welcome the return of Alan Clark, because it gives me something to write about in the section below.

Tee Set Lesson for the Week (or how to be a good Tee Setter)

The Tee Set does not have any hard and fast rules about Tee Set handicaps, except that you must play at least 5 games with the Tee Set. I have carried this a little further to include a reasonable time limit of at least 1 game in the last 6 months. If I don’t have any scores from a golfer during a 6-month time period, I feel vindicated in relegating them to inactive status and they must play their way back in the good graces of the Tee Set.

In my opinion, there are some exceptions, and I will give you a few of those, although the list is by-no-means complete. Anybody that has run the Tee Set as an officer, gets to retain lifetime Tee Set membership. They may not have an up-to-date handicap (Jack Larson), but they can come by anytime and play a round of golf with us and be appropriately rewarded. I will exempt anybody that has had a profound affect on the Tee Set, that I am aware of, which will include Lily Salim, who managed to win almost half of the Low Gross prizes one year, or Liz Murt, who shows up weekly to support her significant other and has provided the Committee with food and drink. And finally you can pay me money or buy me beer. It may be a lot of money or a lot of beer, but it’s a way back.

The only other way, but by far the easiest on me and the future Tee Set handicapper, is to actually play with the Tee Set and turn in all of your scorecards

Sunday, August 4 at Pangkalan Jati, starting at 10:30 AM. We will be saying farewell to Sarah Murt (and Chris Barnett). In their honor and at their request we will have a 3-club match. You will only be allowed to play with 3 clubs. If one club is your putter, your caddie will be carrying only two others. You might consider putting with your Driver. Come on out and test your skill (or luck). At least you should get a discount on your caddie tip. See notice below for further specials. I hope to see everybody out there.

Tee Set Annual Tournament

The Tee Set Annual Tournament is still scheduled for August 25th at Matoa, starting at 7:00 AM. We are up to 10 competitors. We now need a few prize sponsors.

Monthly Medal, Gading Raya, Sunday 30th October 2016

The Day

Walking in to the Tee Set round before Melbourne Cup Day the pairing sheet could be confused for a bookmaker’s board, but no odds were good enough to attract punters to this field.

We know its the rainy season and also the wedding season, so the pawang hujan (rain mover) has no option but to move the rain to the golf courses so it can cool off the Tee Setters.  He spared us for eight or nine holes then let us have it….lightning and buckets of rain.  White shirts were not fit golfing attire for those without umbrellas.

Despite that 34 Tee Setters battled through and finished their rounds, with some remarkably good scoring (see below), despite the rain and the fast, tricky greens.  Great effort by all.  Without a monthly medal event themselves at the club, they got us off early, earlier than we were prepared for.  This allowed many to finish early, have a warm shower and enjoy the friendly service in the clubhouse.

30022253053_547a23f7fe_mA big welcome to Kiky (peace Kiky!) and welcome back to a range of Tee Set faithful, after self imposed exiles, to work on their swing, their zen, or their whatever.

After 5 rounds at Gading Raya, the Committee now has the tough choice of where to schedule the next round of Monthly Medals, starting in December after the Championships.  As usual consultation will take place over post-match drinks so get ready to have your say and either be listened to and/or ignored.

The Play

Neil Mullins led the way with a fine 81, winning Low Gross and his first pay check in quite a while (his call not mine :-)).  Murcho therefore took Low Gross after a brilliant come back 36 on the back nine.  Rob Graham continued his decent form with a net 70 to win B Grade.  Rob will be having his farewell round next week (well until next time) so we will send him off at Riverside or thereabouts.  Jana had an outstanding 64 net, and was unlucky not to be Monthly Medallist, but won Low Net C Grade.

VP Mel kept his trousers on this time, the Web Guy showed that 2016 is his year for trying new things with his hair and Pastis Pascal boasted that he no longer gets skirts and promptly dribbled one short of the ladies tee….golf justice.

2016 Tee Set Championship

There are just a handful of places left now after allocations to Sponsors and regular players and they are now open to ANYBODY. Register here if you want one of those places. If you register and we are full up then you will be placed on the wait list – don’t despair if so, there are always a few drop-outs.

Next Up

A second go at finishing the Tee Set World Cup at Riverside on Sunday of course, with everyone one in with a shout still – but with Srikandi leading the charge after an outstanding performance from them in the first leg.

Captains are handling their own teams this week so you only need to register here if you DIDN’T play in the rained off event and want to join in now, we can certainly fit a few more in.

Shotgun start from 10-18 at 12:30 but don’t cut it too fine as we will have teams to finalise and will probably get away a little earlier.

Green fees including shared cart of 770,000 as usual, but just 345,000 if you played in the rained off 2nd leg at Riverside on the 9th October and have not subsequently used the rain check from the club of course.

Yes, you too could be the Tee Set Monthly Medallist!  This month is quieter than usual so it may be your chance at last.  Sign up here if you haven’t already.

Also, a reminder that the final round of the Tee Set World Cup will be the following Sunday at Riverside.  Those who have not used their rain check can do so then…it wont cover your full round….I think you need to pay another 370,000Rp.  Apologies for those who have competed before and are unavailable next week…the rain got in the way.  It may make the competition interesting though as teams scramble to put teams together.  Good luck!!!

Finally, the Tee Set Championships are looming on the last Sunday in November.  We have limited spaces so have offered players who have played 10 rounds priority before opening it up to those who have played 5 rounds and so on.  If you miss out on a place, have a sleep in and come and join us for the post-game fun.  The Band from Bandung is making a come back this year so should be a fun day and a great way to celebrate the end of the Tee Set year.

We will also be seeking nominations shortly for the roles of Tee Set President and Tee Set Vice President. There will be no pre-election debates, surrogates, attack ads, in fact there will be no campaigning at all….just work out who you want, ask them if they are keen and nominate them when the form comes out.

The Day

kedaton-231016It started raining on the way to Kedaton and really didn’t stop all day. Not to be deterred (had to spell that right), 29 out of the registered 34 Tee Setters finished their rounds, with two more sneaking off for a hot shower after nine holes.  Roger (above) clearly missed his days in the front row, but may have been better served by Murcho and Geary as his props.

Geoff realised he couldn’t whisper in the rain so is caught here making a beeline to the exit; Ricardo and Mo were happy enough to wait for the rain to slow down, and Chris got ready to skate his way through the slippery fairways, the rain bouncing off his newly shaved scone.

A funny highlight from the first flight off with Mick sculling a chip across the green, straight onto Mel’s putter, as he was lining up his putt from off the green.  Mick’s ball ricocheted back towards the hole.  To Mel’s credit he managed to get his own ball closer.

Great to see the Srikandi stars out there proudly in red, with Wina here a study of absolute concentration despite attempts to put her off her chipping.

The Play

Some very impressive rounds given the horribly wet conditions.  Stuart having a 79 off the stick led the scoring with Lee (71), Efsi (72) and Chris (76) taking low net prizes.

Lee’s 23 putts was a top effort, taking advantage of what were excellent greens, but Rocky’s 27 was also outstanding and he took the Lowest Putts award due to our one prize rule.  As usual Rocky (below) also provided some fine tunes to the after match event. Lis was the first par scorer among our Over 30 handicappers and a mixed bag of Tee Set’s finest managed somehow to win the other “skill prizes”.

In the booby prizes, Nick actually thought he won money, thanks to Brenda being distracted by the peanut gallery, but had to give it back after having Most Strokes on a hole with 12. Chris jumped in again…I think he thought there was a prize for most photos.

There were no Monster Putters – everyone was under 40.  But there were plenty, yes plenty, of skirts.  In fact there were multiple skirts per hole – Mel’s playing partners were blamed for at least one of his, but we are not having that, and Ricardo is reported to have had three on one hole but he and Rob Graham, with his Tee Set first skirt, took off before photo time.  What a stunning bunch……not

Reminder: Kedaton, Sunday 23rd October

drop_zoneThis Friday funny reminded me of a particular hole our Hawaiian buddy Dan Richards played at Kedaton a couple of years ago.  At that stage was battling a fearsome slice and put at least sleeve of balls into the creek flanking one of the par 5s.  In fairness, I think the last ball was pilfered after landing on the bank.

But don’t let that put you off.  We always have a great day at Kedaton.  It’s a pleasant walk if you prefer walking and the staff and facilities are very Tee Set friendly….well, Modern last week will be hard to top.
