The Day and the Play

What struck us on Sunday was how much Modern bent over backwards to make our event run smoothly. All started with a dedicated  check in desk and Fanny handing out free fruit punch. It just got better as the day went on. Thanks to Modern for the great service.

Tee off was on time from two tee boxes. Plentiful carts and caddies and no waiting around. Most flights finished in 4 hours but some even came in even quicker. Unheard of this year for Tee Set. Even after dinner, a few drinks and the presentation all were able to get away before dark.

A big thanks to Brenda, Ric and Mel for holding the fort AGAIN….

A good sprinkling of new comers and a healthy sale of Tee Set golf shirts. Getting low on shirt numbers so lucky the Championship is just around the corner. Maximum welcome back duration was a miserly 7 weeks which is easy to clock up if work gets in the way.

Very friendly red tees at only 20 or 30m in front of the blues but we still managed to clock up 6 skirts for the day (see fuzzy photo below). VP Mel had a very eloquent description on how he managed to get his skirt after missing out for a number of continuous weeks already:

I don’t recall what eloquent description I used for getting my skirt. All I recall was that as I was on my forward swing my mind was definitely on something else, and I am lucky I hit the ball at all, and it did not even make it to the white tees, let alone the reds. Also of note is that Ken Runyon was one of the few skirts for the day, which always makes me feel better that someone who gives lessons is not immune to the occasional skirt, especially as my propensity is on the way down.

Apologies this week for the abbreviated newsletter with the Singing Prez off in Malang getting married and joining these jokers in an alternate Tee Set round on Friday at the surprisingly good Araya course (well especially the back nine). The knee held up so see you Sunday!

araya

Pastis Pascal won the golf.

Results of Modern are not yet to hand but we have photos!

We sadly say goodbye to Isa Schmidt who played her last game before returning to Germany, managing to take the money here. Don’t worry Isa because Tee Set will keep your hubby busy on the golf course and out of the bars.

In fact hubby Gerald was also in the money, as were Rob and Ken, who has found form to win Low Net.  Ken actually had both low gross and low net but took the money for low net since Tee Set is a low net society as declared many games ago by Former President of Some Things, Peter “Rancamaya”.  Jeff Landau one stroke back took low gross and remains in a purple patch as a result of not going home for the holidays. Instead he stayed in Jakarta playing 3 or 4 times a week.  A lesson there for us all. Play more golf!!!

And before we sign off on what was obviously a great day, another gem from VP Mel….

My caddie made  the assumption that my last club on to the green was always a 7 iron regardless of being 140 m or 50 m from the tee. As it happened my first few holes required a 7 iron, so she saw the pattern and gave me a 7 iron no matter how close to the tee I was. No smart comments please

Gold!

Tee Set World Cup, Riverside – Singles Round, 9th October 2016

riversideThe rainy season has hit and our hopes of finishing the World Cup over two consecutive Sundays at Riverside proved a bridge too far.

In fact, many flights did not even make the bridge, finishing six holes before the heavens opened and the thunder roared.

Our lame Singing Prez – lame due to a knee problem and a serious post buck’s night hangover – had carefully reviewed the score sheets and found very minor discrepancies – in some cases resulting in no change in better ball scores, but adding one point to the leader Srikandi and deducting one point from GB2.

In reviewing the scores it was clear how much Tee Setters improved when playing team golf.  Individual scores were significantly better than past rounds at Riverside and better than monthly medal rounds where we use stableford scoring.  The better ball format allowed plenty of “ham and egg” play – scoring when your partner does not – leading to the high scores, especially in the leading teams.  Well done!!

Six holes played was enough for Mel, Jess and a few others claim they were having their best round ever but not enough to count for World Cup scoring so we need to replay the singles round and Riverside has offered us Sunday 6th November at a discounted rate for those who use their rain check. Thanks to Simon and Riverside for your understanding. We hope we repaid you adequately in food and bar takings.

Of course, anyone else is welcome to play and will be found a team to join.

Finishing early was not all bad.  The Committee broke out the wine for each team and people settled in to what was a very pleasant Sunday afternoon.  “The Idiot” shiraz was a particularly hit, although raised some questions as to who was the inspiration for its selection. Don’t fight over it gents!

A gem from Bushy describing the Araya golf course in Malang.  He described the consecutive par fives as like repeating the same hole.  Now anyone who knows Bushy’s flashy brilliance would know that he has the gift of never playing a hole the same way.

A warm farewell to Jess Kindler, who is moving to Sweden, next to a golf course.  Thanks for all the rounds Jess and hope you get the right type of visitors looking you up in your new home.

In the meantime, we are playing at Modern this Sunday at 11.30am for 770,000Rp including cart.  Register here as usual.

Tee Set World Cup: First Round, 2nd October 2016, Riverside

Fantastic response to this new event with 70 players, including a lot of guests.

Yep, after the first day of competition, Srikandi – Team Indonesia – are well in the lead, after smashing the Anzacs 3 team 3-0 and scoring what must be record better ball stableford scores – a total of 136 – and average of over 9 under nett per pair – phenomenal effort that may attract the attention of anti-doping officials.

Check.results-after-round-1

Great to see Team Finland with hats and shirts, Team India with shirts and Team Czech with some great face painting here.

30051056926_81766064a6_z

Lots of fun was clearly had….and another hole in one provided by Team GB – well done Ian Butcher!!!  Not a good day to shout the bar, with 70 players!!

Squillions more photos here and here….

A couple of teams missed out on finishing due to the late start and overcast conditions. There was some rain through the day but nothing hard enough to be problematic. The wind came up and made the playing conditions quite comfortable.

The day was not without dramas when the Web Guy was denied access to accompany photographer Brenda around the course in the highly overpriced buggy.  Riverside are not doing their best to host next year’s event.

The Web Guy did a grand job with the score cards and pairings. Very chaotic during registration – and the occasional precious souls bleating – but all worked out well.

Winning pairs went into the luck draw for the 6 bottles of wine on offer. Ken & Don from Team USA won one, Sisca and friend from Team Srikandi won another, and the final bottles?? Better refer to the photos here.

Next Sunday is singles.  Stableford scores will be added to the team better ball scores above.

If you have registered with a team no need to register again.

If not, register here to be slotted in to the gaps.  You may not get to play for your country but the world is a wide and wonderful place and Tee Set encourages you all to be good global citizens 🙂

No need for a next up….you should know…back to Riverside for the grand finale…see ya Sunday.

Tee Set World Cup of Golf

tee-set-world-cup

There are still a few places left in the EU, ANZACS, GB and Rest of the World teams for the Tee Set World Cup at Riverside on Sunday, so drop us an e-mail here if you are up for the Global Challenge!

While the event is being played over 2 Sundays, some teams have players coming in for week 1 but being substituted in week 2 …. so signing up for just 1 of the weeks is ok with us, just mention when you e-mail us.

Green fees etc including shared cart will be 770,000 roops. We will have a full shotgun start from holes 9 – 17 at 12:30pm which will get us round in good time sans hujan. On that subject, Riverside have spared no expense in engaging the services of the finest Pawang Hujan in the area 🙂
Please show up in good time on Sunday as we need to sort out the final team line-ups and allocate those teams to their starting holes – and have breakfast.

The Tee Set World Cup format is as follows

Sunday 2nd October is four ball better ball – played in teams of two using Stableford scoring based on your team’s better ball. Pairings will be completed on the day. Some interesting liquid prizes when we will be putting the winning pairs into the hat and pulling out 3 lucky winners.

Sunday 9th October will be the climax of the comp when individual Stableford scoring will be the order of the day.

And at the end of all that, the winner will be decided on the total of all Stableford points by team over the two days. The Winners get to hold the handsome new Tee Set World Cup for a year – and bragging rights for the same duration of course 🙂

See you on Sunday at Riverside, may the best teams win!! …. Tee Set

Monthly Medal Gading Raya, Sunday 25th September 2016

 The Daygr250916a

Just as the floods hit South Jakarta late in the week, so did the tidal wave of late registrations, reaching 57 by the day.  As usual a great day was had by all, with various beverages contributing to the mood. A bit of a rushed post this week, but the pictures tell the story.

Only three newcomers welcomed this week to Tee Set – Steve, Gyong and Allan (hopefully pictured here).

Big welcome backs to Gert, Jan and Dominic.  Great to see too, groups mixing it up, with some fantastic photos here and in the gallery here.

Thanks to Pastis Pascal and Brenda for running the day and taking almost 300 photos – including a particularly special collection of follow through shots.  Not sure that sounded right….anyway you know what I mean.  Check it out.  Thanks also to Pieter for helping out and Ric as usual, looking visionary in this shot below.

The Play

Monthly Medallist for the month of September is perennial prize winner Bas, shooting a net 67 for 41 stableford points, well done Bas. Great to see we have found the shield and medals.

Other winners were Jeff Landau (75 gross, 68 net) and James Ross (net 69) in A and B grades. Stuart picked up Low Gross with a solid 80.  Various skill prize winners.  Drew won the triple crown – monster putter, most strokes  and a skirt, joined by 3 buddies in the photo below.

Next Up: Tee Set World Cup, Riverside

As advised we now have teams for USA, GB, ANZAC, South Africa, Finland, India, Indonesia and North America.  Still no Team Europe – is this a sign that you have decided to leave the World?

There are spare slots available for the World Cup next Sunday; we are not too religious about who people play for nationality-wise so sign up even if your country has no team or empty spaces, we will fit you in subject only to an overall limit of 80 players which really should be enuff to accommodate everyone.

Sunday 2nd October is four ball better ball format – played in teams of two using stableford scoring for the better ball of your team. Pairings can be done on the day.  If you have already registered with a team, no need to register here.  However, if you want to join in the fun of what will undoubtedly be a great event, and haven’t done so already, then get in here.

And unbelievable bragging rights!!!!!

As for Asia, we are yet to hear from Team Thailand (come on Thai Guys, you could field 2 or 3 teams) and Team Philippines – you guys love a good stoush, you gotta be there!!

Contact the Singing Prez – craig.ewers@aipj.or.id – to register your team.

Individuals not in a team will be invited to register next week in the normal way and indicate their preferred team, but there are no guarantees, you may have to be an honorary Canadian, Aussie, European or Pom.

The best way to play for your country is to contact one of the captains above who still have places.

Imperial Golf Klub, 18th September 2016

The Day

imperial180916

Apologies to the eager beavers whose week is so precisely planned that this late post has thrown their lives out of order….purely a product of your Committee having a life outside of Tee Set 🙂

After a slow start to registrations and a long break from Imperial, 49 was an impressive turnout with another 7 newcomers, following on from last week’s record number of 9.  Here is a collection of 8 mug shots, apologies if you are wrongly included or omitted as we are working on limited information here at website central and will add or delete you as new information comes in from the field.

Disappointingly Imperial again let us down on agreed pre-match conditions but we did get off earlier than planned so all was ok in the end.

Tee Setters know by now how to fill in time before tee off so enjoyed a hearty feed and joined in the pre-match Pastis with Pastis Pascal and King (Luar Biasa) who generously shared their stash with a number of willing volunteers. In fact, there were so many takers, some wondered if there would be enough left to get King and Pascal through the game. Of course they did not run out, but Pascal needed 14 extra strokes to get around his second nine, so he may have had to play semi-sober. After this rather agricultural tee shot below, Pascal may have decided to let a caddy have a try.

The rain started to drizzle down only after a few holes, but not hard enough to discourage anyone from battling on.  The thunder rumbled around the edges of the course but was not close enough for a siren to sound. As most groups commenced the second nine, the rain had completely abated, and things started to get steamy.

The Par 3 Fifth Hole has always been a bit steamy, where players are enticed by a couple of Imperial’s more entrepreneurial female staff to back themselves and bet on their tee shot landing close to the hole.  The sales techniques have become more imaginative over time.  VP Mel tried to negotiate a cover bet that his tee shot would land in the water, but there was no taking that action…..a very wise decision.  Not a bad attempt by Mel, good contact, good flight, but yep his ball ended up in the drink, the blessing being that he had avoided a skirt.

A big thanks to Mel for being the sole committee member there and for Brenda and Pascal who assisted.  Ric was off captaining the interleague team at Jagorawi, see below, and the Singing Prez was in Aceh, sadly not playing golf or having a Pastis.

Despite the late tee off, all groups managed to get back to the clubhouse before dark, as Imperial did not schedule extra flights between our groups. The food and beverage service in the restaurant was enjoyed by all as the sun set, and after the awards were presented, many were still seen relaxing and enjoying an extra drink or two and the pleasant breeze flowing though the clubhouse.

We will be back Imperial as Tee Setters love your facilities and service; but we have to work on that start.

The Play

Imperial190916b.jpg

On the course, Jeff continued some very steady form with a 77 to have the lowest round of the day, and the lowest net round of 70 in A Grade.  He was joined in the net winners by Chris Lever rediscovering form and Gerald Schmidt whose net 67 is a reward for investment in coaching and some very hard practice.  Having Isa back must surely help.

29668940332_e41fe23a98_z

Ronald was awarded Low Gross with a strong 81.  Pascal took First Sandy, Low Putts and first Par over 30 but could only win won of them. Paisan aslo had First Par for Handicap Over 30 so won that prize. Four players had 29 putts – Ian, Pascal, Richie and Jeff. Andrew won first birdie and KK and Rasmus shared the late to wake up award with Most Improved – 9 strokes better in the second nine – clearly massive Saturday nights.

And in no surprise for Imperial, a rick harvest of skirts, most remaining for our now classic skirt shot, in fact more in the shot than in the list, some late confessions perhaps:

29700474671_a9e8d5bef6_z

Jana took Monster Putter with 45, no doubt provoking lots of comments from the kids, and Pierre proved his honesty with the Most Strokes Award, taking 13 on one of the holes.

Interleague

8 brave Tee Set Warriors fronted the aptly named Sand Baggers at Jagorawi, led by Captain Courageous Ric.  After a very up and down season as reigning champions, we further restored honour with a solid 6-4 victory.

Chris Lever was a let withdrawal due to flu and was replaced by Simon Reynolds, who went down in the singles 4 and 3, no doubt handicap difference played a part. As we can see above, flu did not stop Chris winning B Grade at Imperial, so it must have been a geographically specific virus.

In the second singles, Stuart beat the very competitive Grumpy Kees, in what would have been an excellent match.

Murcho and Neil had a great win against El Guapo Fernando and Wobbly Bob Axel and interleague newcomer Lee also has a strong win paired with Axel. Ric and Santo went down 4 and 2.

Tee Set remains in 5th place with the final game remaining against the low ranking Pocksia.  4 points separate Cloggies and Mad Dogs at the top of the table and they play each other next round. A mouth watering finish to the season. With a number of Mad Dogs being Tee Setters we may have to throw our support behind the team in red, but in event a good finish for us would salvage some pride.

Next Up: Monthly Medal, Gading Raya, 11.30am 850,000Rp

gr

It’s Monthly Medal time and we are back to Gading Raya.

Register here as usual.

World Cup of Tee Set – 2nd and 9th October, Riverside

To ease administration, we have been contacting volunteers to captain and form various teams for this competition.  We already have 2 Australian-New Zealand teams, one Indian team, one UK team, one Indonesian team, one South African team and one Canadian team. We are yet to have a US or “Post-Brexit” European team, so please volunteer (see below).

If you are not yet part of a team, don’t worry, you can register as individuals next week and we will find you a team. If you want to be a captain and can form a team of 6 (country, continent or region), then email the Singing Prez on craig.ewers@aipj.or.id as soon as possible and let us know.

The first week will be team competition (teams of two playing each other in better ball stableford format) and the second week will be singles (stableford).

If you can only make one of the two weeks, no problem at all.

Non-Tee Setters are welcome but handicaps will be at the discretion of the Committee.

We are looking forward to an excellent competition, with an emphasis on fun.
