Next up: Imperial Golf Klub 18th September 2016

imperialphoto

A return to the delights of the Klub with a K on Sunday when we expect a very decent turnout despite our guys and gal playing Interleague at Jagorawi. Good luck to the team in continuing to improve their league position after a dodgy start!

Green fees of a reasonable 770,000 roops (including shared buggy) for a course of Imperial’s quality and with a civilised 12.44 tee off from 6 tee boxes.

Sign up here to join the fun of Imperial, one of Jakarta’s very finest – and blessed with great access via the JOOR and a little of the Merak Tol.

As an alternative if you would like a 9:30 start to the day, there are a couple of Interleague teams short of players who would welcome you with open arms! … just let Ric know if so and he will set you up. Green fees of 1,050,000 roops.

Enjoy your golf at Imperial or Jags! … Tee Set

Cengkareng, 11th September 2016

The Day

ceng110916a

A great turnout as usual for Cengkareng, absent this time of Joseph who was off carving up Rainbow Hills with a  67 off the stick.

Instead this week we feature Bushy surfing Cengkareng, discovering that there is a space for his esky of cold beers.  Bushy was the only one brave enough to trial the devices.  He found that the novelty wore after after a few holes, as he did donuts waiting for his playing partners walking behind to catch up. May have been the beers too Bushy 🙂

Ric is featured in action today at the start of his silky smooth swing and King and John are back with us doing what they do best.

The weather was great until right near the end of the round when the heavens opened cooling everybody off.  Everybody soldiered on and finished their rounds.

So many newcomers listed below I won’t mention them all here.  We are unable to provide photos today but we will catch you as you come back to us hopefully over the next weeks.  A lot of welcome backs too, Ahsan after 58 weeks topping the table, Tadashi after 20 weeks, Matt and King after 19 weeks and our photographer and Master of the Monthly Medal Pastis Pascal returning after 15 weeks following a return home to Canada.

The day was rounded off as usual with some quiet beers, good food and service and the magnificent frozen margies.  Thanks Cengkareng for a great day.

The Play

First of all, apologies for grading stuff ups, which led to incorrect prizes.  These are now corrected in the table above. We will certainly honour the prizes given out but also catch up with those who missed out, I think we have managed to catch up with you all except Peter for your net 66, sorry mate, next time. You ran off to the airport before we could catch you.

A lot of great scores in a fairly packed A Grade. Daniel had the lowest score of 78 and was awarded the lowest net score of 67.  Simon’s round of 79 was the best off the blue tees and was awarded Low Gross. Laurie’s round of 67 was well worth recognising in B Grade, as Peter and KK’s are, even thought they were recorded in C Grade, oops. Anirudh took C Grade net with a tasty 69 net.

In the skills prizes, they were really shared around. Mike and Nick sharing Most Improved (or as it has come to be known Last to Wake Up), Santi started a front nine of 37 with a sandy par on the first.  We are not sure which of the Gaisler kids sunk the ball first but Barbora won the prize for first birdie.  Mo had a rare day of brilliance with the putter to win Low Putts with 27 and King returned to win the money with a first par for handicap over 30. It had to be early in the round before the pastis kicked in.

And now for the real winners….Most Strokes was shared between Jeff, John and Lars – but no fine was levied as they already had paid for their skirts.  Joining them were 9 others, glamorous as usual.

Here they are in all their glory:

Next Up

Yes, it’s been a while but we have all got over our brief enforced separation and we are back to our much loved Imperial Golf Klub with a “K” this Sunday. Tee off 11.48am; green fees 770k.

Register here as usual.

Lots of interest in the World Cup of Tee Set on 2nd and 9th October.  Please start putting your teams together but bear with us.  A special webpage with rules and registrations is in production and will be posted this week.

Also of interest to some is the annual Bintangs golf day on 30th September.  For those interested, click here for our Classifieds Page.  Tee Set is not associated with this event so all enquiries should be directed to the organisers.

IMG-20160905-WA0002The addition of regular events at Cengkareng this year has been one of our most welcome developments for sure. Great course, easy journey, great caddies and staff – and the best Margaritas in Jakarta, who could want for more?

“Walking only” was a pain for some but even that is now solved with the recent availability of “hoverboards” to get the old and infirm around, though we imagine that even these fun things will not get the Singing President and his knee back in action 🙂

We took advantage of an opportunity to slip in an extra visit over and above the original agreement with the course …. don’t miss it, register here if you are not one of the 40 plus who already have 🙂

See ya at Cengkareng … Tee Set

Pondok Cabe, 4th September 2016

The Day

PC3Sept1

Note – this is a repost, because the first one slipped out early, oops

Stuart’s display of flexibility had to be featured in today’s lead photos.  Not sure what Roger is celebrating here but he looks triumphant with Tom A, and Siska and newcomer Cameron look like they are having a ball here, with Cameron ready to take the wheel. At nine years old, Cameron already plays a mean game but got a little lost on one of the holes with an 11….happens to us all.

Again the reporters from the field – in fact the Field of Chillies this week – Pondok Cabe – added some additional bite, ensuring plenty of heat in this veritable sambal of photos and numbers.

As for variety, among the 46 players we had representatives from Germany, Egypt, Philippines, the UK (we’ll keep you together for now), the Czech Republic, Austria, India, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Indonesia – I’m sure we have missed someone!. All shaping up well for the World Cup of Tee Set to be held at Riverside over two consecutive weekends 2nd and 9th October.  Start getting your teams together (countries or regions allowed) – some preliminary details here.

Weather was kind with mostly overcast skies. Greens were slow compared to say Lotus Lakes but not bad for a suburban course. Having a choice to walk or ride a cart is nice to have.

Again the Singing Prez – likely to be out for the rest of the year with a bad knee – and the Web Guy – on his second tour of ‘Nam this year, had to rely on the trusty Immediate Past President of Almost Everything to be true to his name again, assisted by Lis and Beby standing in for Brenda.

Welcome to Tee Set to Cameron above, Karin (not captured yet) and Steven (who could do a decent Jason Statham impression with a headshave and a few more hours in the gym), Reports from the field just in claim Steven brings some real singing talent to Tee Set.

Welcome back to Patrick after 55 weeks, Robert after 44, Teddy 35, Siska 22 weeks and Efsi after 17 weeks.  Last time we saw Efsi she enjoyed a puff between swings and the occasional bintang but this week she was very restrained. Better go back to old habits Efsi because its a well known Tee Set lesson that abstinence does not improve your game. All clearly lured back to the Field of Chillies, as were this motley crew below.

For detailed player by player results, click here form_-current-results-for-pondok-cabe-4-sep-16.

For a suburban course, not in the same league as many we have been playing, Pondok Cabe was a bit too hot for most of the Tee Setters – a healthy harvest of skirts and no blistering scores.

Stuart, Tom G and Chris – the Till not the Lever – won A, B and C Grades.  Stuart also had the best gross of the day with 81. Mars and Axel also did well in A Grade but were OB by the time prizes were announced.

29489517815_9c09a86ced_z

28867403983_06797121e9_m

In the skills prizes, Gus led the tables on Most Improved and the coveted first par over 30 handicap, Daniel claimed first birdie, Mars had his eye in with only 25 putts and, in a rare event, no-one parred from the sand.  Only Gus managed to be captured on the photo reel this week so here he is in all his glory. Well done Gus!

And now for those who found the Field of Chillies a bit too spicy….

James has clearly found a new look with that wig – similarly, Lis is becoming fairly attached to our mascot and for the second week in a row, winning Monster Putter. She stood in for the real winner Brett who took off early, good sport Lis.

Next Up: Cengkareng, 11th September 2016, 12 Noon

Yes, True Enjoyment indeed, especially for those who like to walk the course.

We are back at the very popular Cengkareng at 750,000Rp for green fees (walking) and the chance to Surf Cengkareng one of the new golf hoverboards available to the bravest and laziest for 250,000 Rp.

Register here as usual.

Monthly Medal Gading Raya, 28th August 2016

The Day

GR280816a

The day was always going to be a challenge with Gading Raya also having their monthly medal in the morning, but again things worked out fine.  Everyone showed remarkable patience under the circumstances. With the Singing Prez out with a dicky knee and the Web Guy having a well-earned break, the Immediate Past Prez for Almost Everything lived up to his name yet again, slipped on the cape and undies, and applied some old fashioned technology to organise the pairings and get flights on their way.

The weather threatened all day but all we got were a few drops and just enough moisture to have the caddies scurrying for the bag covers. After one hole covers were off again. Course was in good nick but a little soggy after the heavy Saturday rain that flooded Kemang. Back to lift clean and cheat again.

Another hole in one this week…well sort of… not quite the same as Geoff’s heroics of last month. Pieter Groen with an 8 iron approach to the 17th green managed to pull it badly and it was heading directly for a couple of parked carts. A loud thud followed and we thought there goes the cart’s window but upon reaching the carts no damage was seen. Instead the ball had dropped short directly into a blue plastic garbage drum. Being a man-made moveable object he was allowed to take a drop no nearer to the pin.

29205125002_d4c97e4e89_z

A big welcome 29205132502_85595ffa43_mback to Mike Landau pictured here with Jeff and no doubt enjoying time with the new member of the family.  Welcome back also to three of our Thai Guys – Chakkapong, Jirathpol and Kasana (not Ke Sini?).

Three more Thai Guys – Opas, Piboon and Worapon joined our numbers for the first time, showing the Thais are gearing up seriously for the World Cup of Tee Set in October. 20% of our 59 players last Sunday were from Thailand, the land of silk: a new record and the registrations were well managed by Brenda despite some very tricky name spellings and pronunciations.

Welcome also to Lee and Kelly for their first game in Tee Set; hoping Kelly will come back after being nabbed for a skirt (photo below).

Great effort too for the guys who fronted up after playing 45 holes on Friday.  Shane Rowles from Australia showed off his lily white winter legs, and Don Duttlinger down from Balikpapan for a few rounds of golf. Don played the previous Friday on the Asian Tigers sponsored Iron Man challenge and managed to finish all 45 holes unassisted by the cart. Tee Setters are made of stern stuff as proven by the fact over half the Iron Man players were from Tee Set. Billy clearly played himself into some good form.

The Play

GR280816b

Some very good scores which will no doubt be recognised in the eclectic results when we get to calculating them.

29205131492_516ebfcd1c_m

The Monthly Medallist with 44 points was Tee Set regular  Jaturaporn (or Bas as we know him) who is always improving and has a knack of collecting one of the prizes on offer each week – with this form he no longer qualifies  for the first par over 30 handicap, which went to his buddy Paisan this week (pictured below).

Well done Bas. Matoa was kind enough to offer free rounds which were given to Bas as an additional prize – not sure he needs practice at Matoa after his score at last year’s Championships.

Other net winners included Murcho, Chris and Gerald (the lessons are paying off) and Jeff had an excellent round of 78 to win Low Gross.

In the skills prizes, Rasmus showed how photogenic he really is after taking First Birdie, Pieter (Don’t Call me Pete) probably swore before getting out of the sand, then swore again when he got out, and again when he had First Sandy on the 7th. Piboon had a miserly 25 putts to win Low Putts and Dennis only woke up at the half way mark to win Most Improved with 18 strokes, only to go back to sleep and miss the photo, so Ricardo with 11 was more than happy to step in and claim some of his past investment back…what goes around comes around Ricardo.

Bill Lloyd’s great round of 88 must have qualified him for a prize here – and I’ll confirm which one in due course – anyway, who cares, well done Billy – great round!!!!

And now for the real champs….oops Ricardo – you had Most Strokes man, sorry I thought you had won Most Improved….oh, and a skirt…

VP Mel is clearly over skirts but had a nice par on the second hole to cheer him up. His fellow cross dressers seemed happy enough here, with newcomer Kelly donning the wig on his first round.  Lis jumped in here to win Monster Putter, joined here by photo bombing hubby.

But the happiest of all was Drew, who for the first time had a skirt free round, and shouted his playing partners as a celebration…did he guys -looks like water Carm?

Next Up: Sunday 4th September 2016,  Pondok Cabe, 11.18am, 450 000 Rp

Yes we are back to an old favourite.  The Shangri-La stay and play didn’t really work out so we had the chance to fit Pondok Cabe back into the calendar.  Those addicted to the top courses may choose to have a break but, for many of us, Pondok Cabe is a great day out and excellent value, especially for the battlers.

Register here as usual.

Late Posting: Video of Bali Trip, Battle Royale

This did not come through in the event post, but our video of the 33rd Birthday worked a treat so let’s try again.

Great trip, enjoyed by all. Par 5 Group will join us for a return bout in a regular Tee Set event at a date to be determined.

Enjoy!  Quality of talent and photos may not be great but the music makes up for it 🙂

Lotus Lakes, 21st August 2016

The Day

LL210816a

A year to the day since we last played at Lotus Lakes, a small contingent of Tee Setters ventured out to play a tough but excellent course.  It’s a long course, with soft fairways but hard and fast greens and everyone enjoyed the scenery and the challenge.

Although its a fair way out on the road to Bandung, it’s a fast trip and the facilities and staff are first rate.  Definitely worth playing for those who missed out, no doubt hung over still from the 33rd birthday and Independence Day festivities.

28536045304_f678030254_m

Peter Grant was actually a newcomer but is listed here as a Welcome Back, probably because he has a name sake. Peter took the Low Putts award so is pictured here.

The Singing Prez had a break from presentation duties, and relaxed with wife to be Yunita, and the Immediate Past President  of Almost Everything took over, splendid here in red and white. Thanks also to Beby who filled in for Brenda.

The Play

LL210816b

To speed up play we started off all three nines, so people played a different combination of the Orchid, Lotus and Jasmine courses.  The scores indicated that all nines were equally challenging.  Winners of the net prizes included Roger in A Grade, the Singing Prez in B Grade and Tom in C Grade; Ian being awarded Low Gross instead of Low Net A…just because….it’s complicated 🙂  Tom and Ian were OB for the photos.

In the skills prizes, Matthew took first sandy – great to see that driver out Matt after a session with Coach Ken!!!  Patrick was first birdie but was OB, as was next in line Sudhir.  Lis took First Par Over 30 in what is becoming a regular thing.

Mike won Most Improved after Neil was OB as well – great for Mike because he made a profit on the day, after wining the trifecta – Most Strokes, the Skirt and Monster Putter….for all that, he gets his own string of photos….good on ya Mike!

Next Up: Monthly Medal, Gading Raya, 28th August 2016

We are back to Gading Raya for the Monthly Medal and second round of our fourth eclectic cycle.  Register here as usual.

For those playing the 45 hole challenge at Jagorawi on Friday, see you there!!!!!!

Next Up: Lotus Lakes, 21st August 2016 11am, Rp 800,000

LotusWe had planned this week to return to a nostalgic favourite of Tee Set, Pondok Cabe, but a tournament there has ousted us and we have the opportunity instead to play the excellent Lotus Lakes course in Karawang on the way to Bandung.  Co-incidentally the last time we played there was also the Sunday immediately following Independence Day last year.

Lotus Lakes has 3 separate nines, each with its own appeal.  To speed up play we have agreed to use 3 nines, so players will have a different mix.  If you have existing preferences of nines, let us know in the comments field of your registration here, otherwise be brave and take pot luck.  Don’t ask how we will factor in which nine you played into prizes, we will assume they are all the same.  If you feel you are good enough to game the system, you are probably delusional, but good luck.

To celebrate Indonesia’s 71st Anniversary of Independence, we invite you to wear red and white but it is not compulsory.  A prize will be given for best costume!  Technically the red is supposed to be on top or you may be celebrating Poland instead 🙂 but you can always stand on your head….reminds me of an old rugby song.

We normally get an early start at Lotus Lakes so plan to arrive at 10am if you can.  It has some long par 4s but to please the more macho among us, we will be playing blue tees. We will check how wet or dry the course is before declaring whether we are playing winter rules or not.  Green fees are 800 000 not 850 000 as originally posted…bonus!

Reminder: 45 Hole Challenge, Jagorawi, Friday 26th August 2016

Bill, Bags and Fernando let us know that there are still 20 places left in the maximum field of 60 allowed for this great event.

So click here for further details and registration.  As we advised, this is not a Tee Set event but we are very happy to support it.

We are also happy to support the Star Deli tournament at Matoa on Saturday 24th September.  Star Deli continues to be a great sponsor of Tee Set, so go along to the legendary breakfast and then on to Matoa for 12 noon tee off.  They will do it with our friends, the HOGS, who do such great work to help fund surgery for kids with cleft palates. Tee Set contributes directly to this work thanks to your registrations.

Tee Set’s 33rd Birthday Fun Scramble, Sunday 14th August 2016, Matoa Nasional

The Day

What a fantastic day.  78 Tee Setters, including a record 11 newcomers (see below, all joining together for a fun day of good golf, novelty play, fellowship and the odd beer or two.  The fun scrambles really are a popular format that bring out partners and friends who lack confidence to play every week, as well as involving all the staff in the fun of it all.  The rain gave us a cool off for a few holes but who cares….definitely did not dampen the spirits.

An experiment of the day was the drone camera work, which worked a treat as you can see here, thanks Mike. The excerpt of Richard sinking his putt is going viral as we publish.

NewcomersThe peanut gallery confirmed that the Youngers have played Tee Set before but it may have been so long you have slipped off our records.  In any event we welcome you back.

Special mention also to the Oceans 11 who travelled from Megakuningan by bus and transformed to Oceans 13 on the way back.  Miraculously we all survived the Mullins 80’s music playlist and the no toilet breaks on the way back but the Masters Bar got a work out after.  Supreme effort as the lads closed the bar at 1am, after several rounds of “killer” pool.

Thanks to Matoa for a great day, to Keith our Web Guy for being the lead event organiser and to Brenda as usual for the great job as Secretary.

We’ll save the winners shots til last but here are the rest of us:

Thanks to all sponsors, especially Hothead for the great BBQ, Asiaserv, Asian Tigers, Kojo, Star Deli, Grand Slam and JS Luwansa, who provided the great birthday cake.  Tee Set’s own classic – and former President Geoff Thwaites – cut the cake and reminded us that in 2007, Tee Set would often only get 2 or 3 players…but we survived…not a weekend missed in 33 years, well done all!

Lots more photos of the day thanks to Brenda and her cart.

The Play

BD Results

Coming in third, was the Luansa Chancers who braved the rain with a little help from their caddies.  Longest drive with the 80s wood driver was brought to you by El Guapo Enterprises with a 222m sweet smack down the middle.

28992299485_32dff7a8d7_m

Coming in second were Ivan’s Happy Endings, complete with custom made hats.  Mullins was from all accounts on fire today but all contributed to what was a very happy ending.

The winning team captained by rock legend Chris Till, and supplemented by scratch golfer Andrew, had to play as a threesome because of Sudhir’s late withdrawal due to illness – they found a fourth member around the course but the poor little bugger could not pass Tee Set’s one and only qualification rule so was carried home. A 66 off the stick brought them home in 52 to take home the honour, glory, wine and balls.

Lots of door prizes thanks to sponsors.  Best dressed 80-s theme went to Rasmus, channelling the late great Payne Stewart and Nearest to the Brenda, went to Prisada, 5m from the statue, pictured here with the real thing.

Full team by team results can be found here.

Next up: Lotus Lakes, 11am 850 000 Rp

To celebrate Independence Day we are returning to where we celebrated it last year, at Lotus Lakes – the former Karawang International – a great 27 hole course.  Wear red and white if you feel like it but it is not compulsory.

To speed up the round, we will play a mix of the 3 nine holes this week so the results ceremony is going to be lots of fun!!!!  Lucky for committee discretion, all will be decided one way or another and any unlucky sods will be shouted a conciliatory beer…but only if they are gracious.  Register as usual here.
