Next Up: Sentul Highlands, Sunday 17th July, 11.30am tee off: 750,000Rp

SentulYes, I had to use this photo again.

We already have over 50 sign ups for Sunday including a few coming back after two years or more away, so it is obviously an attractive course.  If you haven’t signed up already, please register here.

Gents are off the blue tee boxes, winter rules are in play and flights will start off tee box 1 and 10. See ya on Sunday.

Friendly Reminder

With a lot of rounds being played outside of Tee Set, we wanted to remind Tee Setters to submit all score cards for rounds played in Indonesia to Brenda either by hand or copied in an email to teeset.jakarta@gmail.com. Please mark clearly which tee you played from.

It doesn’t matter how regularly you play with Tee Set, this is a service offered to you so you can maintain an accurate USGA handicap that you can use in various competitions you choose to enter, including Tee Set.

Damai Indah BSD, Sunday 10th July 2016

The Day

bsd100716White or Blue

Of course the day started with continuous chatter surrounding the BLEXIT – the decision to move from blue tees to white tees for BSD in wet conditions only, and continued – blah blah blah.  Tee Set’s vibrant and rebellious (though limited) democracy in action: an ongoing dance between the traditionalists and the  changers.

But let’s put all that aside for now and focus on the day.  The decision to play at BSD could not have worked out better.  Traffic was non-existent to and from the course.  Everyone started on time or before and finished well within four and a half hours, even with one or two groups being slotted in on the turn.  The recent emphasis on improving the pace of play is paying off.  Thanks to everybody for doing their bit here.

The storm clouds threatened overhead and gave us one or two drops but refused to open, allowing us all to get through a great round.  Can’t say we came out dry given the humidity, but the fast pace of play, the holiday numbers (22 players) and the weather had us all in the clubhouse, showered, watered, presented with prizes and heading home before dark…a first for a long time.

Welcome to first timer Meta – always great to welcome newcomers to golf and especially more lady members which helps VP Mel’s KPIs – also a big welcome back to Tee Set stalwarts Frank and Anna Wilson after 41 weeks away.

Beby 1

Big thanks to Beby for stepping in for Brenda while she was away, assisted by Ric and Lis.

The Play

BSD100716b

Some great sub par rounds for Mark (68 to win Net A grade), Jari (66 to win net B Grade), Geoff “The Caddy Whisper” (68) and the Immediate Past President of Almost Everything with a 69, complaining he hit so many greens in regulation off the white tees, his putt count crept up to 38!  Anna’s comeback round of even par 72 was enough to win her net C grade.  New dad Jeff Landau shot a strong 78 off the stick to take Low Gross, one ahead of Coach Ken whose beard is growing bushier by the week.

In the skills prizes, Tony Wood led the way with the flat stick needing only 28 putts, equalling putting miser Mark, a good effort on greens which are still a little bumpy after coring.  Frank and Laurie shared Most Improved with a 5 shot improvement, not normally enough to win this prize, but enough today. There was no par among the 30 handicappers.  Manfred took little time to get first birdie on the second hole and Ric was to win first sandy on the third hole.  Andrew Waite was a little unlucky not to win a prize but deserves special mention for having two sandy birdies (alas not counted as sandy pars and not early enough for first birdie); the first one being a tap in after a very close sandy eagle attempt.

And now for the booby prizes and perhaps a first, with Mike scooping the pool. Yes, Monster Putter, Most Strokes and the only skirt….Mike could hardly juggle the various props for the photo…keep at it Mike, we will be there to shout you a drink when you crack that ton. As a special tribute, we have included a true action shot…note the tee is still in place a la Justin Rose.

Next Week: Sentul Highlands, Sunday 17th July, 11.30am

Sentul

Thanks to Manfred and Meta for the cracker of a photo taken during their round last week.  Yes, its back to the castle, the fairway boulders and the rolling greens of Sentul Highlands.  The Gary Player designed course is becoming better each year as it grows into its surrounding landscape.  It’s a tough test of golf but the friendly staff, great facilities and stunning views make it well worth it. Register here as usual. Tee off is at 11.30am off Tee boxes 1 and 10 and green fees including carts are 750,000Rp.

Gents will be playing of the blue tees – the Treasurer may do much better this week.  Winter rules will apply.

Improving Pace of Play

Thanks to everyone for improving pace of play but we can still get better, so a couple of positive tips.

If you are unsure if your ball will be found, even if your caddy calls “AMAN”, please play a provisional.  This saves you and others the hassle of you returning to the place of your last shot. If you find your ball, great, continue with no penalty.  If you don’t find your ball, use your provisional, with one shot penalty.

Another rule that is misunderstood and can save time and strokes is the Ball Unplayable Rule (Rule 28).  It is explained in this video from USGA.   The important element of this rule is that it is solely up to the player to declare a ball unplayable. The decision to declare a ball unplayable and take a one stroke penalty cannot be contested by a fellow player. So instead of hacking away in the rough or behind a tree or boulder, wasting time and losing shots, consider your three options under the Unplayable Ball rule.

See ya Sunday.

Senayan National, 3rd July 2016

The Day

Senayan1

With holiday season well in swing, a cosy group of 24 Tee Setters joined together at Senayan in the heart of Jakarta.  As usual we were not given any special treatment and as usual several groups were inserted during nines, causing one of our flights to give up at half time.  Senayan was good enough to give them a voucher to complete their rounds. It pays to keep up with the group in front, but even then I doubt if that would have made too much difference at Senayan, hence we have shifted future events away from the course.

27441722554_018cce6dca_m

Welcome to Arnaud (left), a colleague of Andrew’s, who joined us and welcome backs to Tony, Goetz, Manfred and Joe after long absences.  Goetz and Manfred unfortunately were in the flight affected by the mid round delay.

For those of us who finished, a good day was had and special thanks to Mike pictured above who generously shouted 4th of July drinks.

The Play

senayan2Several sub par rounds with Murcho lighting up the course with a 76 gross, 64 net – a round that included double bogies on the last two holes.  Chris as net A grade winner was joined by Andrew in B grade and Joe Alchi in C grade after a great comeback round of 69.

27953012752_980efee696_z

Divya was awarded Low Gross but was OB, Geoff picked up Low Putts on the slick Senayan greens, Tom Alcedo was Most Improved and Lis again took out First Par Over 30s, but unfortunately also took Monster putter with a 6 putt on one hole.  The Singing President managed to squeeze in for first birdie on the 12th after giving away prizes to those who beat him to it on earlier holes.

Cucu had most strokes and a number of gents had skirts.  For the second week in a row our Net A Grade winner had a skirt. This week we had it in two shots…notably we had a Ric, Ricardo and a Richard among the cross dressers this week.

Next Up: Damai Indah BSD 11.30am 909,000 White tees

Yes we are back at the very popular BSD so we can take advantage of a decent rate and a great course.  After the controversy on tee boxes last week, a poll was taken and the result was clear, BLEXIT – yes a vote to move from blue to white.

blue v white

Not an amazing voter turnout but considered sufficient and certainly conclusive enough to move to the white tees this week, with winter rules continuing.  There are rumours of a blue tees rebellion….let’s see how the rules of golf deal with rebels 🙂

Register here as usual.

For anyone still in Jakarta this week and looking for a round or two, Tee Setters are playing unofficial rounds at Riverside at 11.30am tomorrow and at rainbow Hills at 10.30am on Friday, so rock up and join if you feel like it, otherwise see ya Sunday!!!

Next Up: Senayan, Sunday 3rd July, 11.20am

Senayan

Enjoy macet-free inner city Jakarta this Sunday as everyone except us takes off for the kampung to celebrate Idul Fitri.  Senayan is a great walking course and forces us to use every club in the bag, the greens are in good nick and the facilities are top notch. The green fees are 750,000Rp (walking), carts are a steep 500,000Rp per cart and beer prices are even steeper so be warned!

Local Rules

The Committee has declared winter rules for this event (see here for a description) – known to most as lift, clean and place.  Gents will be playing off the BLUE tees.  There are also Senayan local rules (power lines and flower beds – some blue stakes free drop, some no stakes penalty drop) so read the score card.

Given that we will be starting off holes 1 and 10, and the front nine is par 36 and the back nine is 33, Most Improved will be calculated as if everybody was starting off hole 1…so make sure you mark your starting hole at the top of your card!!!!

If you haven’t registered, do so here as usual.

Updated Tee Set Schedule

The updated Tee Set Schedule can be found here. Lots of great events coming up.

The Monthly Medal and Tee Set Eclectic for the four months between July and October will be held at the popular Gading Raya. For fans of Imperial, we will play there on 18 September and then intend to return the Monthly Medal there in December after our Tee Set Championships in November.

Changes to the schedule have been made possible by the great numbers causing us to be offered good prices for great courses.

Next Sunday 3rd July, Senayan – 11.20am Tee Off, 750 000Rp walking

Senayan

A quick update thanks to the negotiation skills of Wina, we have managed an earlier tee time of 11.20am and a lower rate of 750,000Rp than first advertised.  See ya there!

Register here as usual.

Damai Indah Golf and Country Club BSD, Sunday 26th June 2016

The Day

BSD260616

No traffic issues at all.  Rain got us at the end but the pace of play was so good that the last group had an hour break in the drinks hut before finishing their round still well before dark.  BSD is well worth the extra Rupiah.

27852983061_af995c4354_z

Both the Singing President and the Former President of Almost Everything were needed to explain a number of chaotic elements of the day.  It’s been a while since we have both been there together and we managed our best to make it as clear as mud.  What was clear was that everyone was enjoying themselves enough not to care.

But for future reference, let’s get it right now.

There was some confusion over tee boxes, with some playing off the whites, based on past rounds being subject to a local rule announced for BSD by the Committee, and others playing off blue tees as our normal Tee Set default, in the absence of a local rule being announced this round.  BSD is such a long course that many prefer the whites, however, it does bring bunkers into play, and we have emailed you a quick poll to get your views before we play there again.  Just so we can be clear! If we vote to leave the blues (BLEXIT) we will advise.

Some more confusion over lift, clean and place.  Again to make this clear, we are playing “winter rules” – lift, clean and place, until further notice due to courses being wet.  The USGA, whose rules we follow, allows local club committees to determine winter rules.  Our interpretation, based on common practice on Jakartan courses, is that lift, clean and place is allowed within 6 inches (15cm) if your ball is muddy and if it lands on fairways or closely mown rough (first cut).  You should mark your ball first and announce to a playing partner you are taking relief under winter rules.  Please note this is different from taking relief for casual water or a plugged lie out of a bunker, this is always available.

And finally, due to ongoing negotiations on the Monthly Medal venue, we decided this would be a standard round so we did not score stableford or award a Medal this month.

As expected for BSD, a great turnout, with 51 players including 5 newcomers (pictured here) and a host of welcome backs led by Amarjeet after 94 weeks and Tarun after 35 weeks away.

An early finish encouraged people to stay for a few beers and get to know each other afterwards, ending a very enjoyable day out.  We’ll be back soon BSD.

The Play

BSD2260616

As usual, BSD brought out some good nines, with A graders Stuart and Ken carding 38 and 40 and B Graders Al and Jaroslav carding 42s.  Jaroslav had one of his best rounds shooting 67 nett to pip Laurie and Al who both also shot under handicap for the B Grade Net.  Anirudh took Low C Grade honours with a 68 from Ricardo (71) who continued on his good form. In A grade, we couldn’t separate Ken (sporting his first ever beard) and Roger (who took off before photos), who both carded net 75s.  Stuart had a great round of 80 for Low Gross but we decided to take him out of the Low Net contention, and as it turned out, had to leave before presentations leaving a happy Treasurer.

27852997571_10066a74a7_z

In other prizes, Bushy was Low Putter with 29, Lis again won First Par Over 30 and first timer Luuk won Most Improved.  There were quite a lot of birdies but Romeo got in first on the fourth hole and Emil had the first of the first of many sandy pars on the third hole.  Special mention to Jeff Landau whose sandy par on the sixth included two bunker shots.

A couple of great matchplay battles – James took the honours over Stuart and Laurie over Roger, demonstrating how tough matchplay is on the low handicappers who both had strong rounds.  Well done to Laurie and James who are proven matchplay performers.

And now for the booby prizes.  It is rare, although it has happened, that the Net A Grade winner also wears the skirt….and we saw it again today with Ken…joined here by first timers Matt and Luuk, and incognito Max under the wig and Art making up the motley crew. Regular cross dressers Mel and Ricardo were conspicuously absent for the photo.

27828544452_9fdcc77e61_z

Monster putter was “won” by Aaron who was joined here by Brett after getting lost with a 12 for Most Strokes on a hole.

Mid Week Edition

Funeral Details Juergen Degert

Juergen

As advised by Juergen’s dear friend of 20 years John “Malty” Suermondt on Sunday, on Facebook and here on Monday, Juergen passed away in Bogor after a battle with illness.

A member of Tee Set since 1995 and, while not playing for the last few years, Juergen was always a tremendous supporter of our group, nothing was ever too much …..his trademark smile is captured here!

Many in the Jakarta golfing community have commented on how Juergen was always open to a great chat, a laugh and a beer…one of the real good guys.

Great that so many of us were able to see Juergen for the last time at his beloved Rancamaya just a little more than a week ago – and moreover be able to remember him in such great spirits for the Tee Set v DOGS matchup …

Condolences to Juergen’s wife May and the family at this sad time.  Juergen’s funeral will be this Saturday at Tanah Kusir Cemetery from 10am.  Until then those wishing to pay final respects can visit Juergen at the funeral home at

Cheers and RIP dear friend from all at Tee Set

Tee Set Interleague, Sunday 19th June, Jagorawi

Now in from Captain Ric….

Oh what a difference a month makes. The loss to Cloggies last month 10 – 0 after some hard fought and closely contested matches was a devastating blow, sending the Singing President into temporary exile after a shocker, and convincing Captain Ric that things had to change.

The result – a brilliant 8-2 win against arch rivals Mad Dogs, the only team to beat Tee Set last year. Sweet revenge.

The singles matches have always been a bit hit and miss but with Murcho and Stuart in good form Iris and Yati had their work cut out for themselves from the very first tee box. Murcho finished off Yati on the 3rd last hole with a 3 and 2 win while Stuart took his match 1 up with a wonderful last hole birdie.  Ric and Anlo combined again in the first doubles and carried a 2 hole buffer for most of the round. However a bit of momentum swing in the later part of the round from Avid and Keith saw them 1 up with 4 to play. However a bit of ham and cheesing (ham and egging?) – we will define one day on the next three holes saw Tee Set safely through with a 2 and 1 victory.

Nearest to the pinChris Lever (pictured here winning Nearest to the Pin) and Joseph D’cruz proved again to be a very compatible grouping and after a sea sawing game with the lead changing a number of times, won on the last putt of the day a 1 up victory over Alan and Geoff settled a hard fought match.  The final doubles game went to Mad Dogs with Rauf sinking 8 pars with Nakil supporting with a few of his own. Divya and Neil both played steady and close to their handicaps however it was not enough and an early shower resulted from the 5 and 4 loss.

Great effort from the team. Captain Ric breathed a sigh of relief in the knowledge that Tee Set despite its ups and downs remains more than competitive, especially given recent poor results for leader Tin Cups.  A two month sabbatical til the next round in September against the Sandbaggers is followed by the final round in October against Poksia.

Bogor Raya, 19th June 2016

The Day

BogorRaya1It’s always a treat playing at Bogor Raya, rated by many Tee Setters as their favourite course. Until now, we have  struggled to find the right rate and starting time to suit us.  A great turnout of 43 enjoyed the  trip to and from Bogor with no delays. We have been offered another good rate and starting time for 6 November so will work on a return then.

VP Mel took the reins in the absence of all other Committee members and did a great job.  Mel handed over to Malty who led the toast to his good buddy Juergen Degert who sadly passed away after a long battle with illness.  Juergen was a great character, a friend to all and a fantastic supporter of DOGS and Tee Set over the years, most recently stepping in to help secure the arrangements for the Rancamaya weekend, for the second year in a row. Juergen’s wife May has asked if Tee Set and DOGS wanted to join in a wake for Juergen and we will advise of times and dates as soon as we can. We will also do a more fitting tribute to Juergen on this site when we announce the details for the wake. No doubt there are some interesting flights now forming on those golf courses beyond the pearly gates. RIP Juergen and best wishes to May, family and friends.27507929430_cc03d8e123_z

It was great to see Andy and Bruce back after absences of 211 and 156 weeks and to welcome newcomers Tom, Sepand, Robert, Brett and Aaron.  We hope you enjoyed your rounds and will return to play with us in the next few weeks.

Our Interleague Team was representing us at Jagorawi and we will update this edition with results as soon as they come in.

The Play

BogorRaya2

Some very strong rounds with a special mention to Carm Gleeson new to golf this year and shooting her first net under par round…keep at it Carm!

Craig Binks took out the Low Net A grade with a strong 69 net, Glen showed again his capacity to shoot low with the round of the day 63 to win Low Net B grade, although there were some good rounds in the 60s following behind him and Ricardo shot one of his best rounds to date with a net 68.  Sorry I had to use an old photo Ricardo as you must have disappeared before prizes – anyway it’s a great shot and it shows that it was clearly your time to get a return on your previous “investments”.  Joshua again showed his talent winning Low Gross with a 82 off the stick.

In other prizes, newcomer Robert won Low Putts, Kim then took Most Improved because Robert had won Low Putts, Susanty had First Sandy on the 2nd, Drew is not pictured here (perhaps banned after his Jags skirt shot) but no doubt let his playing partners know after having first par over 30 handicap on the 2nd hole and James again won back his rego fee with first birdie on the third, tying with newcomer Tom.

In the booby prizes, Koen won the honesty award with 13 strokes on one hole and Pekka became Monster Putter with 45 putts.

Almost forgot…skirts…plenty but only these brave cross dressers stuck around…scary.

Thanks again for Mel and Brenda for shouldering the load with us all away.

Next Up: Damai Indah BSD, 11.42am, 908 000Rp

While we work out the future of the Monthly Medal we have scheduled a “wedge” Monthly Medal this month at the excellent Damai Indah BSD course.  While stretching the normal budget, this presents extremely good value for money as it is an outstanding course offered to us at a significant discount and we are all assured of a delay free round and a quick trip home.  It will not be an eclectic round and the next cycle of the eclectic will start the following month and will continue for four weeks. Register for this Sunday here as usual.

Tee Set Shangri-La Classic Postponed

As mentioned last week, this event has been postponed until probably September…to be confirmed.  There’s so much going on and our other lives are getting in the way of our duty to Tee Set so something had to give.  Great reports so far from those who have used their Tee Set membership cards to get discounts at BATS and other Shangri-La venues, as well as the other partners supporting Tee Set here.

Next Up: Bogor Raya, Sunday 19th June

BR1A very simple message today – don’t miss this once a year opportunity to play what is a drop-dead gorgeous course at the reasonable price of just 800,00 and with an early tee time of 11:00 off 1 & 10. If you plan to play then register here if you have not done so already.

Interleaguers playing at Jags should know who they are by now. Drop Ric a line in case of confusion!

Enjoy your golf this weekend wherever you play … Tee Set

PS The Stay and Play planned for the 2nd July at the Shangri-Lah has been postponed until later in the year, just too much going on with Tee Set for us to cope with it all at the moment 😦

Rancamaya Play and Stay, and much else …..

RM01

The Day

RM05 family affairRancamaya is one of the true Jakarta area greats of course, and those who hadn’t played the course before now know why it is right up there. Recent spiking and sanding on some of the greens was hardly to detract from play on this quite gorgeous course.

The weekend was kicked off nicely with a record short trip of just 45 minutes from Kemang to the Rancamaya Hotel.

Just under 30 players signed up for a Saturday post-lunch tee time and despite having 10 flights of visiting Koreans arriving just before Tee Set a fast rain free round was enjoyed by all.

Then it was back to the hotel for a quick shower followed by a B-B-Q dinner with free flow Czech beer sponsored by Jan Janda. Made such a difference to the Bintangs we are all so accustomed to. There was also a nice array of red and white wines sponsored by Tee Set fines and fees recovered through the year so far. All hotel booking and other arrangement were done by Jan and Juergen so many thanks  guys and also thanks to Herman for the great room rate and taking care of the group over the weekend. Further happenings

Sunday was of course the Tee Set competition against D.O.G.S and HOGs with 8 match play 2 ball pairings to be decided. Although the booked tee time was 12:30 all non over nighting players from D.O.G.S were already assembled in the club house ready to go by 10:30. Obviously this was planned by DOGS captain Mark Johnson to upset the normally well organised and well drilled Tee Set group and the plan worked beautifully.

Tee Set captain Ric scrambled to put the groupings together last-minute without a thought as to handicaps or strategy. As the players left for their tee boxes Ric was last seen running back to the hotel to find his playing partner and check out of the hotel.

RM07 Farewell to Chazz

A sad farewell to Chazz Hassig this week with his departure for pastures new in Canada imminent. Chazz’s appearance were a little restricted by commitment to his boys’ soccer development, however, he has always been a great supporter and not least a source of Duty Free when we needed it for the Championship etc. Thanks Chazz, enjoy the frozen north and remember us fondly!

RM06 Filling the GAP

The Play

RM08 a HHOGS thannk u

Some good support to the event from the HOGS who presented ourselves and the DOGS with certificates of appreciation for our continuing support for their absolutely outstanding charity.

RM09 Its a challenge

Mark receiving the perpetual trophy for DOGS winning the latest round of the Challenge Match with Tee Set. Look after it well Mark, you are merely keeping it warm for us 🙂

Without going into great detail (the pairing sheet and results are still in Rancamaya), DOGS took the day with five and a half points to Tee Set’s two and half. Congratulations DOGS. Even more importantly, during the presentations the hat was passed around for donations to get more smiles on kid’s faces as part of the HOGs cleft palate surgery program and another Rp5M was raised for a great cause.

Wine and more Czech beer was made available by Tee Set to celebrate the day a gesture that the DOGS will reciprocate when the next event rolls around. When it was all said and done we were all treated to a fast trip home with just 1 hour back to the Star Deli. Wouldn’t it be so nice if driving in Indonesia was like that all the time?

RM02 from 10

Bogor RayaAlways takes the breath away to stand on the tee box at either the 1st or 10th at Rancamaya, this is the 10th of course.

Next up

Another trip down the Jagorawi Tol at the very best time of the year – and we hope and expect to have the same pleasurable experience as today with light traffic going AND coming back as the fasting month takes its toll on the populace’s enthusiasm for visiting the Puncak.

This time it is to another quite amazing course, Bogor Raya, a course so popular that it is only able to offer us play during Ramadan – and even then only at a stiffish 800,000 roops including shared buggy, though that is a huge saving from their regular pricing for a magical course.

Tee off from 1 & 10 at 11am. Very well run course so that time is likely to be respected or even advanced a little if things are quiet as they often are during the fasting month.

Bogor Raya is of course the alternative to Jagorawi where the Interleague team will be looking to put the wheel back on the cart after a poor start to their title defence. Green fees there are the usual 1,050,00 roops including shared car and with a shotgun start at 9.30.

Registration for all will be to Bogor Raya this week, however, if you are available for selection for the Interleague match, or already know your services are required at Jagorawi then, please, indicate this in the comment box on the registration form.

Wherever you are playing with Tee Set next Sunday, play well and have fun! ….. Tee Set

RM03 Koreans

PS there was to be no resumption of the Korean War on the Sunday as the few playing preferred to wait and take a little picnic rather than push in … thank you to them all for their courtesy ..
