Vale – Rest in Peace – George Bevege

GeorgeThe Tee Set community is feeling the shock of the loss of our good friend, Interleague representative and playing partner, George Bevege who passed away on Saturday in Manila.

Friends are leaving tributes on George’s Facebook page here.  If you are like many of us and not yet ready to accept the loss of a classic, hardworking, honest and lovable Australian character, you may want to read through some of the comments, which demonstrate the range of people whose lives were made better through time and laughs with George.

Sincere condolences to George’s family and loved ones.  George was a fine golfer, among the best chippers, but we will all remember you as a man.

Rest in Peace, Georgie!

Next Up: Permata Sentul, Sunday 1st November, 2015, 12 noon

https://i0.wp.com/old.permatasentulgolf.com/images/permatasentulgolf.jpgYour reminder is a day early just in case you didn’t read the newsletter from Sunday. We don’t want you turning up at the wrong place!

Yes your Committee had to shift this week’s round at short notice to Permata Sentul  after Bogor Raya shifted our tee time out to 1pm….much too late.

Permata Sentul is one of Tee Set’s most enjoyable day’s out – hospitable staff, testing course and a free pitcher of beer for each flight always brings a smile.  At 748,000Rp it’s great value.

If you haven’t registered yet, do so here.

While you are at it, don’t forget to register early for the Tee Set Championships on 29th November here. You can register a whole flight but you don’t have to…if you are happy to take pot luck on who you play with, feel free to register yourself only.

Monthly Medal, Imperial Golf Klub, Sunday 25th October 2015

photo1 photo2 photo3

The Day

This month brought back to us some of our former Tee Set stalwarts, introduced some new friends and saw off (for now anyway) one of our true characters.

Some serious welcome back players to acknowledge with Dave Allan topping the list at 54 weeks.

Medal Hilites

We suspect he was looking for an excuse to get out of Singapore’s choking haze. Appears  Jakarta is one of the few places left in the world not yet affected by the haze generated by the fires lit in Sumatra and Kalimantan. Michael Seabrook has been away for 47 weeks which by coincidence corresponds to the first ever Vasco De Garma award reserved for those unable to navigate to/from the course. No fun getting lost in the narrow kampung streets of Gading Raya and BSD. Mike Garwood has been a regular Tee Setter in the past but at 43 weeks away we will have to question his recent priorities. Laurie O’Connor also came in at 43 weeks but flew under the radar as to where he has been this last year.

New players included the big hitting Luke Prince, Rob Ovevton who spent more time than all ofus on the greens, Stefan Rafales who had some frightening stories to tell of golfing in Brazil, and Jakarta ladies Putri Utami Sudija and Lidya Pratiwi bravely venturing out for the first time with Tee Set.

?

?

Sadly it was Graham ‘Grumpy’ McGeady’s last round before heading back to Australia for a well earned ‘retirement’ break. His initial grouping experienced a small tee box SNAFU but that was part of the cunning plan by the Immediate Past President of Almost Everything to send him off with fodder for complaint. No doubt we’ll see Grumpy back in the group from time to time when he needs ‘relief’ from the granny state.

With 55 players signed up, Brenda still on family duties and the Singing President away it came down to a team effort to get the registrations, groupings and results done in an organized manner. Beby and Lis took over control of the Tee Set computer and did a great job all things considered with several new players to input, very late arrivals, missing handicaps, messy score cards or just wrong scoring. The web guy acted as consultant and trouble shooter when things started to go pear shaped but overall we got through the event with minor teeth gnashing. Great effort by Beby and the others but nevertheless, hurry back Brenda…..we miss you. Apologies to those who had to leave before the rather late presentations….we’ll make it up next time.

Great weather although a little on the pressure cooker side, the course in great shape despite the dry season including some welcome wildlife. No excuse for not having a fun round even if it was a little longer than normal.

The Play

Medal Summary results

Low net B grade and overall monthly medal winner was Douglas McQuarter with 39 stableford points. In addition he also grabbed nearest to the pin with 5’ 4’’ so could afford to take a limo home with his winnings.  Low net A grade was a tie with Fernando and Santi, probably could have been separated with a count back but it was already late and motivation was low. C grade went to Matt Kaempf with a 74 although the computer results didn’t reflect this….lucky for the reliable humans backing it up.

doug2santielgmatt

Rasmus worked out this week that to win Low Gross you can’t win Low Net so carefully managed to do so with a strong 82. Apologies to those who had to leave before the prize announcements but these missed prizes will roll over to next week as appropriate. Includes 24 low putts by Mark Johnson and first birdie to Bags who both get a free entry next round.

rasmuslukekeith

Long drive is worth a mention and Luke Prince has stamped his authority on this prize from his very first outing. Bombed it 322 yards!! Has already signed up for Interleague match play for next year to keep him away from the other teams out recruiting for 2016. Keith Miller rates an observation with his plus 60 on the front 9 which allegedly is the worst 9 in Keith’s memory (doesn’t say a lot for his memory – witnesses from Rainbow Hills can testify).  Turned it around on the back nine to get most improved with a 12 shot improvement.

Skirts were a plenty as usual when the red tee boxes are so far advanced. This time 7 skirt fines go into the Treasurer’s kitty including one from himself. Putting was not easy on these greens so 3 or even 4 putts were common. Rob Ovevton donned the monkey mask with 48 puts but he’ll be back next week to try and improve on that score.

Tee Set Eclectic – Progress after 3rd Round

Pastis Pascal continues to dominate the competition and after the third round leads with an impressive 57.  Do not be turned off though he has almost reached his limit!  Surely there are not too many more good holes left in him.

Tee Set Matchplay

?

?

Wina in fine swing here is still representing the Tee Set Ladies in her final against Anthony, and James is to take on the Singing President to see who meets in the Grand Finale.  So we need to get two more rounds of matches finished before the Championships on the 29th Nov when the Champions will be awarded the trophy.

Next Up

Tee Setters have been asking to play Bogor Raya for some time and we had managed to secure a start next Sunday but were just advised they could only offer a 1pm tee time.  This would have left us in the dark and at the price it’s not worth it.  So we have booked Permata Sentul with a 12noon start green fees of 748k includes a free pitcher of beer per flight.  Register here as usual.

Classifieds

As mentioned last week we are generally happy to promote events and businesses on behalf of Tee Setters – particularly if good deals are offered!!!!  It’s Rugby World Cup final time so another new one here.

The 2015 Tee Set Championship – an invitation from the Prez

Dear Tee Setters,

We are nearing the end of another excellent Tee Set year of golf and fun involving any number of successful events. In case you are wondering, the Tee Set year runs from Championship to Championship, usually some time in November to some time in the following November, but we are pragmatic about these things.

Amongst the major features and achievements of the year have been:

Finding and establishing a magnificent new home for the Tee Set Monthly Medal at Imperial Golf Klub with a K,  where we were also to introduce our own eclectic event, inspired by the DOGS but with a twist to give higher handicappers a chance to shine.

Finishing on top of the Interleague Competition for the first time since 2006, thanks to the captaincy of Ric, the representation by over 20 different Tee Setters during the year and many outstanding personal performances. We have some great strength in-depth these days.

Celebrating our 32nd anniversary in style with the “Scramble at Sawangan”, a weekend of laughs and some spectacular golf – when we also managed to support the magnificent Yayasan HOG to the tune of 15 million roops while we were about it.

A quite brilliant full weekend event at Rancamaya and the “R” Hotel where more than 50 Tee Setters and their families played, danced, sang, swam, ate and drank as appropriate – and until they could do it no more.

And now we are coming up to the premier event in the Tee Set calendar, the Championship of course, this year on Sunday 29th November at Matoa Nasional – and with a tee-time of 7am.  All registered Tee Setters are eligible to play and those with more than 5 games played since the 2014 Championship are also eligible to compete for the main Net prizes.

Last year’s Championship was stellar and will be hard to beat but we are going to give it a real go and try to at least equal it by sticking with its winning formula – but with maybe a tweak or two as you will discover.

That formula we mentioned includes:

The new edition Tee Set shirt and goody bag

Regular handicap event (and NO novelty holes so don’t bring your pool cue)

Flights of 4 players only

Shotgun start

All the usual array of Tee Set prizes – but doubled for the day

Trophies, medal and heaven knows what else for the winners of 20 categories

Hole-in-One and Nearest to the Pin Prizes

Enough food and drink to sink an Italian cruise liner

Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful sponsors – and your own weekly contributions during the year, we are holding down the participation fee for Tee Setters to just 1 million roops, payable on the day – surely the bargain of the Jakarta golfing year once again.

Finally, as, unlike some, we don’t like to pack you in like sardines, numbers will be limited to about 100 so that we all have a reasonable chance of getting around in 5 hours.

It would be unwise to hang about before getting your flight registration(s) in here.

Hope to see you on the 29th for the highlight of the Tee Set year.

All the best …… Craig

Sentul Highlands, 18th October 2015

The Day

image001

A great run to the course and a surprisingly quick run back, contrary to the estimations on Maps of a 2 hour return.  All and all a great day.  The course is improving as it becomes more established and the facilities continue to be improved. Sure, it’s tough, but so were the players today, and all enjoyed the challenge.

A very different mix of Tee Setters fronted up this week but soon got to know each other, thanks to the course’s initiative of pairing players as they came in, relieving us of that task.  Welcome back to John after 81 weeks and Mark after 19 and welcome to a range of newcomers. Good to see some overlap with our friends from the DOGS – note that we need 5 cards (from any course) to process a Tee Set handicap for you.

Great service, great course, no complaints, reasonable traffic….happy with that.

The Play

SnipImage

The tough course meant that there were no sub-par rounds but there were still plenty of birdies, the first coming from Mo on the first hole.  Mo had to leave early, so Mark was awarded the prize for his birdie on the 2nd.  Anlo and Wang had sandy pars on their first hole as played, we had lost Wang by presentations.  Most Improved was actually awarded to Cucu (not listed here) with 8 strokes as the other “front nine failures” won other prizes.  Cucu’s round was a fine example of perseverance as she battled through a number of tough holes, given confidence of course by playing partner Tom (seen in skirt below), whose own struggle was giving Cucu hope.

sen2sen6sen9

Leona and Matt had mixed days – Monster Putter and Low Putts respectively – but then Leona had the First Par Over 30 and Matt had his customary skirt.  It was Matt’s first game back after 11 weeks and it was just as well he had only 26 putts.  This helped keep his score to a respectable 132…a number thanked you Matt for cheering them up after tough rounds themselves.

sensen3

James stayed in the presentation circle, not for winning, but the blow out award of Most Strokes with a very honest count of 14……not for the first time…. And a rich harvest of skirts as expected, pictured here…what a string (is that the collective noun for skirts?)….

sen8sen10

The big winners of the day were Rasmus (Low Net A with 72) – about time after narrowly missing prizes on past weeks – and also the lowest gross round of the day, but that was shared with Marcelo on 81 strokes, and net trumps gross at Tee Set, so Mars was awarded Low Gross.  Chris came in with a blistering 42 to win Low Net B grade with 73 net and Renny had hubby Mike offering to caddy for her on the LPGA after shooting a great net 72.

sen7sen12

sen11sen4

Big thanks to Keith for standing in for Brenda on scoring, Santi on photos and Cucu on collecting registrations.

Next Up

We are back to Monthly Medal again at Imperial and the 3rd round of the Second Tee Set Eclectic, so sign up here.

Unfortunate news from Gading Raya, a Tee Set favourite, they wont budge from 1.2m green fee, which is a bit steep for Tee Set.  Bogor Raya have offered 1m including dinner and we have great standing offers from our usual suspects.  Interested in comments and will decide later in the week.

Club Championships are now almost 1 month away 29 November at Matoa.  Invitations will come out soon but save the date.  It follows the day after the St.Andrew’s Ball so those Bloody Mary’s will be even more welcome than normal!

Modern Golf Course, Sunday 11th October, 2016

2015-10-11 Modern (3)

The Day

Not sure if we lost any to the bungalows today…..

Late post this week – your scribe was travelling – thanks to Pieter for jumping in on Sunday to help Brenda out (pictured here) while the rest of us were on Interleague duties – and to Ric for making a start on this week’s blog – much appreciated!

2015-10-11 Modern (7)

Modern remains one of the premier first choice courses for Tee Set on any given Sunday. Why? It has all the necessary ingredients necessary for a fun day out. Easy access, fantastic facilities and friendly staff, a golf layout with very little OB or other danger off the tee box, and lovely caddies.

The tally of 21 players was a little light compared to the usual numbers because of the last round of Interleague match play was being played at Jagorawi, involving almost 20 Tee Set regulars on various teams. Welcome back Mo after 88 weeks away and to Ken after 33 weeks (surely can’t be that long since Rancamaya – I think we may have missed his card that day – apparently Billy spiked his drink). Welcome to Supachai and Boonvarit for the first time.

Congratulations to our Tee Set Interleague team. We blew away all opposition during the year (except Mad Dogs who are full of Tee Setters anyway) and were well out in front as best team in the competition. Shows incredible depth in our group since overall we used 20 players during the 2015 competition. Last Sunday an Adults Only Tee Set beat the prickly Sandbaggers 6 and 4 to leave us on 54 points out of a total available of 70. Good wins to Murcho with a 7 and 6, Joseph and Craig reuniting for a 6 and 5 win and Ric and Wina winning 2 Up. Incredible achievement over the year.

The Play

Modern

While light on numbers there was not shortage of enthusiasm or skill. Richard Mau and “Coach” Ken Runyon shared the Low Net A Grade and Low Gross prize categories – Richard leading in both categories, with a 82 gross (net 72) and Ken coming in next on Low Gross with a 86.

2015-10-11 Modern (16)

2015-10-11 Modern (17)

James was getting valuable practice for the Tee Set match play semi-final and took low net for the B grade with a 76 (handicap is safe!), after Manfred (with a nett 73) pipped him but was awarded First Birdie. Boonvarit’s 22 putts must be close to a record and Chaovalit was again in the money with most improved of 9 strokes.  Jaturoporn and Luiz split the Low Net C Grade and First Par Over 30 finishing 1st and 2nd in both categories.  No sandy pars were recorded!  All photos – and others of the after match – available here

And now for the photo we love…a bountiful harvest of 5 skirts a group made of only 21 players?  More money for the Treasurer to pour back into you at the Championship event on the 29th November.

2015-10-11 Modern (6)

Well done everyone for successfully combining another great Tee Set round with a victorious Interleague performance.

Next Up

Exciting news – we are returning to one of Tee Set’s favourite courses Sentul Highlands.  Register here as usual.

An event so worth supporting …

HOGSTee Set have long supported the HOGS Charity here in Jakarta, a charity run entirely by volunteers, mainly expatriates, and doing terrific work for kids here in Indonesia, most of them with cleft lip and/or cleft palate conditions, but they work with a number of orphanages also, delivering all sorts of presents on their Harley Davidsons to wide eyed kids for whom the arrival of the HOGS is the highlight of their year.

You will be dying to know how you can help this great cause and we can tell you – join in the fun of their annual golf tournament at Jagorawi on Friday the 6th of November, tee-off time of 11:30am where they have joined the Kristal Hotel who have also been supporting the HOGS for many years – and in a very major way.

The format is a six man Texas scramble with teams evenly matched, with lots of prizes and as much as you can eat and drink all day. Trust us, it is a truly enjoyable day all round.

IMPORTANT NOTE: PLAY WILL BE ON THE OLD COURSE 🙂

One of the really fun parts of the event is actually the Calcutta at the Kristal a couple of evenings before, Wednesday 4th November, when people, including you, can buy your team in a bidding process.

We are very keen to see strong Tee Set support for this event once again this year- please sign up by printing out this form and making your transfer to the Kristal – and PLEASE, PLEASE pass this on to your friends!

We will be there – and very much hope you will join us ….. Tee Set Committee
