Pangkalan Jati, 6th September 2015

The Day

PJLess than 2 weeks after celebrating not missing a weekend for 32 years, we came bloody close this weekend.  Saved by some very fancy footwork from Wina and Keith and our trusty friends from Pangkalan Jati.  The fact that 40 Tee Setters managed to keep up with the communications and make it to the first tee is a credit to everyone.  Unfortunately we were in for a slow start to the round but speed of play improved dramatically on the second nine.

20584520524_642fcbf8da_mNo newcomers but big welcome back to Sudhir after 53 weeks golf free living in Singapore.

The Play

While not overly long or difficult, PJ continues to baffle many Tee Setters, who fail to give it enough respect.  A bountiful harvest of 10 skirts ranked up there with the most tricky of venues and kept the Treasury flush.  Andre, we know its you under the wig.  At least you didn’t run away before the photo.

PJ scores

There are few Tee Setters who manage to avoid a skirt…its only a matter of time.

21215148451_4ca3fe1abc_mIn other booby prizes, Kim Pham with 43 putts got to meet our furry friend as Monster Putter.  Kim is one of the many beginners joining Tee Set  this year and it’s great to have you with us Kim – that’s why we overlooked the 15 strokes you had on a hole…this time.

The nett and gross prizes always take priority over skills prizes, even if players end up on the top of different tables.

Chris continued his consistent form winning nett A grade with a 71, as did Jiro with an excellent 66 to win Low B Grade and Lina with 73 to stay in the winner’s circle and win low net C grade.

Simon warmed to the challenge of playing alongside Barbora to win Low gross with an impressive 77.  21019299078_d55aa3b83c_mBarbora is back from the long European summer break and suffering from some baffling swing issues which she will no doubt solve in time to wipe that look of the Vice President’s face next time they play.

As anticipation grows for the Tee Set Championships and our final rounds of what has been an exceptional interleague season, we hope to see our top guns firing in the weeks to come.

In other prizes, Anlo capitalised on monster driving with a birdie on the second. Graham and Tom are more about finesse, sharing a hug and the prize for Low Putts with 28 a piece.

20584539104_036a3148b1_m21207232355_19610671b2_m

Renny shot the first par for an over 30 handicap – amid standards calls for handicap justice – and Cucu was left to explain the tragedy of her first nine as she took Most Improved.  Santi “Mrs Pie” Miller would have been under the same spotlight had she not had to take off early.

21019120230_c1b42bd401_m20586106563_9817d4fc77_m

Perhaps the best picture of the day, and the prize for the first Sandy Par on the 2nd hole goes to Pocket Rocket Daniel, who played an excellent first nine before coming back to the standard of his playing partners – Dad Jaroslav, Mum Jana and the Singing President – who did nothing to inspire him on the day.  We all concluded it would be better for his golf to be in a different flight from us next time.

“The ability to cope with change is the only sustainable competitive advantage” – Andrew S. Grove

So, here’s your chance to sustain your own competitive advantage as tomorrow’s round will now be at 11:30 at Pangkalan Jati and NOT Pondok Cabe. All registered players will be advised of this change directly by e-mail today.

PJ is of course well know to almost all and provides a wider variety of challenges than any other in the Jakarta area – and is great fun and possessed of some of the best beer prices you will get in these parts, what’s not to like?!?!

See ya at PJ … Tee Set

Next Up – Update – Pondok Cabe, 6 September 2015

OK we have some explaining to do. We are now all back together at Pondok Cabe.

So here’s the drum.  We made a commitment to Gunung Geulis who have always been good to us.  At the same time the traffic has become worse over time turning many off.  When given a choice Tee Setters overwhelmingly chose Pondok Cabe.  We have explained the situation to Gunung Geulis and they have graciously understood, no hard feelings, let’s get on with Sunday as usual.

We totally understand frustrations but all decisions were made in good faith.  We have elections coming up in November and anyone wanting to stand is more than welcome. The world is run by those who show up!

See ya Sunday!

Next Up: A Choice! Gunung Geulis or Pondok Cabe, Sunday 6th September 2015, 11.30am

pcabegg

In what may be a Tee Set first (and last 🙂 ), we are offering two options this Sunday.  Yes, we do listen sometimes!

For the more adventurous, you may choose Gunung Geulis, a trek to be sure, but offering some of the wildest elevation changes and unreadable greens you will find.  It is an outstanding mountain course and a favourite of many.

For those with an allergy to Puncak and Jags Toll traffic, you may choose Pondok Cabe – – the field of chilli – still a great value course closer to home.

Both will be recorded as Tee Set rounds – but we are returning to our old fashioned pre-automation days at Pondok Cabe – with Vice President Simon and Mrs Pie, Santi in charge for the day.  The Singing President and Brenda will look after GG, while the Former Immediate Past President of Almost Everything Ric has a well deserved break and goes fishin!

To register click here as usual but choose the option of course you wish to play.

Monthly Medal, Imperial Golf Klub, 30th August 2015

20841771738_10d30eaa89_z

The Day

The Imperial sunset never wears thin!

Weary Ironmen (and women) recovered from a fantastic 45 Hole Friday at Jagorawi and regular Tee Setters returned to Imperial Golf Klub to enjoy the joys and heartbreaks of another Monthly Medal round and the first of our second Tee Set eclectic competition.

Ironmen Bill and Bags recovering after 45 hole challenge on Friday

A total of 44 players and a number of partners enjoyed the day.  Newcomer John and welcome back Rod – pictured here – look particularly happy.  Other newcomer Simon almost took newcomer Marcus’s head off on the island 4th hole – with beginner Simon thinking he was safe to dribble one up the fairway up the right but managing to connect, clear the water and draw one perfectly to within feet of Marcus – profuse apologies followed!

The Play

Scores

Getting straight to the highlights, the round of the day was clearly from Monthly Medal winner King – justice after his narrow eclectic loss last month – with an outstanding 44 points.  Pastis Pascal (with a “c”) also played out of his proverbial to win Net C Grade with a nett 70, Norman continued fine Imperial form with a 69 to win Net A Grade and Craig Edwards was the best of a fairly ordinary bunch of B Graders with a net 73.  Simon again took out low gross with an 82.  James joined King for the presentation to receive his long overdue voucher for a previous monthly medal or two or three.

We managed to get our act together for a change with Skills Prizes and chose some different holes – with Jaco putting his drive 257m up the middle of Madonna and Jaturaporn coming to within a few feet for Nearest to the Pin.  Jaturoporn also first par over 30 and was Most Improved with 14 strokes but that prize was referred to next in line and very happily pictured here, Jiro, with 7.  Ric and Jaco waited no time to get a sandy par on the 1st, Alistair won low putts with 27 blows and Fernando continued on from his 6 birdies at the Iron Man with another one on the first hole…brought to us all by El Guapo Enterprises….and shared with the ever improving Lina.

20841556220_9e973c0274_m21019726832_70429c1d1f_mAs usual there was no shortage of skirts – a United Nations led by the Singing President (who blamed the Pastis fed to him by playing partners King and Pascal) and Al in the wild wig.  Chris deserves a special mention for a late skirt confession – yes – I can confirm for future reference of Tee Setters (male and female) that an air swing on the tee is indeed a skirt!  We may yet see Cucu in a Tutu again!

Luiz – yes it is him under the mask – counted 49 putts to be the monster for the day.

Tee Set Matchplay

A great battle was played out between Vice President Simon and Tee Set Interleague stalwart Murcho with Murcho holing putts from everywhere and coming through victorious 1 up.  This of course thwarted the much anticipated President-Vice President challenge in the next round, but gives Murcho a welcome chance of revenge for last year’s Slugfest at Senayan.

Next Up

There has been considerable confusion and debate about next week.  We are booked into play at Guning Geulis with some preferring a shift to old favourite Pondok Cabe.  Interested in your feedback but we may have to stick to our commitment at GG.  Register here as usual.

Next up: Medal and Eclectic, Imperial, 30th August 2015

ImperialSo much great stuff has happened since we were last at Imperial Golf Klub with a K that it is hard to believe that we were there only a month ago (perhaps because it will actually be 34 days ago – ED).

No matter, an 11:38 tee off from 1 & 10 at one of Jakarta’s very finest courses with green fees, including shared cart, of just the reasonable 750,000 roops agreed in our recent 6 month contract extension with Imperial.

Tee Set Monthly Medal time of course, and also the first of four rounds of the new Eclectic competition – so sign up here for all the fun of the fair on another sun blessed Tee Set Sunday if you haven’t done so already.

PS thanks for all the fish

This is the last post by the Web Guy after 316 of them, 206 events and 6,631 player rounds. With the group prospering as never before and in sound hands, I have decided it is time for me to call it a day and pass on the poisoned chalice to others 🙂

It has been a lot of fun helping build Tee Set up over the past more than 3 years and I have enjoyed all of it hugely, with so many good times and so many great memories, not to mention a fine collection of skirts – but, no standing still, onwards and upwards!

Texas Scramble, Sawangan, Sunday 23rd August 2015

Deja vu all over again?

Don’t worry, this really is the second time you have seen this, or some of it anyway, and all caused by some errant button pressing earlier in the day with the post rather immature at that stage. The clerk involved has left for another posting 🙂

The day

The day for some was part of a full weekend of Tee Set fellowship starting on the Saturday with a practice round on a course many were playing for the first time, though there were a number of Tee Set Legends returning to familiar territory, however Jiro was to impress most with 81 off the stick on his first time round !!

Of course, as night fell, songs were sung, shots were downed and another legendary Tee Set BBQ was enjoyed, thanks again to the team of Master Chef Grumpy and Master Organiser Octa, Trusty Helper Santi (Alias Mrs Pie), BBQ Provider (and Former Past President of Almost Everything) Ric and, making his debut, Leading Assistant Sausage Twirler and birthday boy, Jaco.

Following Tee Set tradition, go hard and go early was the motto, and lights were out well before midnight after a very hard day of golf and play.

Bloody Mary’s greeted those who made it for breakfast. As those from the night before were spluttering and blaming others, those who had just suffered the drive in from the Big Durian were also quickly searching for refreshment.

The course was dry but presented a good test of golf, long par 3s and 5s but shorter par 4s which left some longer hitters either in hazards or with an uncomfortable distance left to the green. Sixty players ended up playing, providing perfectly for 15 flights, missing the unlucky Teddy Ragg who arrived in good time for a 1pm tee off 😦

To accommodate pairing preferences, names were not drawn out of a hat as proposed, but wherever possible the Singing President drew randomly to complete the flights with players of different standards who had not yet had the chance to play together. The start was our normal barely organised chaos but the play was enjoyable and it was great to see a totally different mix of tables than usual at the end of the day.

The scramble format gives beginners a chance to join the fun and there was overwhelming support for doing more team format events within the Tee Set calendar. A special welcome to Mike, Rene and Lis who played their first game of golf with us, to Marco who is still learning and to Charles who is no newcomer to golf but was to play his first round of golf with us on Sunday.  Always great to see David, Ed and Ralph back from the HOGS.

A special welcome back to another Texan Mike Sperry and wife Renny who joined us at the BBQ and then joined Neil “Wedges in the Trees” Mullins and Jason in the scramble.  Welcome back to Rina also who joined Team Jan with Daniel, Jaroslav and Jana, the non-playing coach for the day.  Captain Jan was seen practising his conducting skills before the start of play but unfortunately was unable to make the team hum.

The play

Winners

The winners modest in the face of applause for their win !!

Texas Scramble LeagueAs well as being lots of fun, scrambles bring out the best shots in many golfers as they play for their team mates and bragging rights.  No shortage of bragging from Fernando “El Guapo” who was apparently on fire, supported by a solid team, carding 9 birdies to win from Team James and Team Anlo.

Team Neil had a great day out together playing some fine golf while Team Santi had Captain Consistent contrasting with Thrasher Bushy, newcomer Marco and that crafty Fader (aka Web Guy aka Mr Pie). Team Frank obviously had a good time based on their smiles in the club house.

Team Ed and his fellow HOGS Ralph and David took Ivan for the ride of his life on am impressive bogey free round. Team Sofree shot a strong 3 under 69 and continued their camaraderie well into the after match – great to see guys.  Team Anthony started well with two birdies – one putt after two holes – and drove well all day but struggled to chip it close and make those birdie putts.

Team Geoff as always had a ball while Team Chris could not have had a more diverse group of golfers and thoroughly enjoyed themselves….oops I stand corrected…Team Graham was far more diverse and could be heard well above the noise of calls to prayer and local heavy metal bands….still going without their fearless leader well after 6pm.

Team Jan battled through illness and the occasional distractions and had a great day.  Team Norman were also seen together well after the end of play – unfortunately Jiro had used his best round on the Saturday and Tom could not repeat his traditional scramble magic.  Team Ric brought up the rear but were by no means the losers as Rene, Mike and Lis were introduced to the great game of golf and Mike’s drive on the 18th made sure he will be back again.

Pastis Paskal became Pastel Paskal to take out the prize for the best dressed 80s theme in a disgusting shade of lemon with matching hat, overcoming the Singing President and Pieter “Soon to be the New Grumpy” Nielen-Groen who both brought back the 80’s pink.

Special thanks again to Octa and Graham, to Ric as usual the Tee Set stalwart and Liz, to Keith and Santi for everything – and not least to Jan for organising all that wine following on major success with the Rancamaya event.

ChequeThanks to the HOGS who presented Tee Set with a plaque in appreciation of Tee Set’s continued support of their group which manifested itself again today, this time as a BIG cheque – and with Tee Setters then digging deep into their pockets to provide another 4.8 juta on top. Well done us.

Please believe us when we say that there is no better charity to support in Jakarta, the money goes 100% to helping kids access surgery to cure cleft lip and pallet conditions.  So next time you have a skirt and pay your fine, smile and remember it’s all going to a fine cause….either back to you in prizes or special events like today – or to help those poor kids.

Finally thanks to all for participating and being so open to a team event like today’s scramble and demonstrating to the max how much golf can be enjoyed with different people in a range of different formats.  Here’s to more variety in future!

2015 Matchplay

At Matoa on Saturday, Jan Janda turned over last year’s Matchplay Champion David Baglivo in a desperately close match that never had them more than a hole a apart.  Tom Grace also played a matchplay on Saturday and we will report the result as soon as we can remember what is was!

Next up

1On Sunday we return to Imperial Golf Klub with a “K” for our Tee Set Monthly Medal and the first round (of just four this time) of the popular Tee set Eclectic which was won in a blistering net 63 closing round last time out by Jan Jelinek who was to set an incredible final eclectic score of 50.

A high handicap clearly helps, though less so now we have restricted it to just 4 rounds 🙂

King was horribly unlucky given the circumstances of his last round and we will be honouring his eclectic performance with a special prize and a special toast…no doubt with Pastis.

The prizes for the last time out will be ready for presentation next Sunday, hopefully along with the Tee Set Eclectic Perpetual Trophy (if its ready!).

Sign up here as usual for another great Tee Set Sunday in the sun at Imperial. Green fees of a very reasonable 750,000 for this quality of course – and an 11:38 tee off from 1 & 10.

See ya at Imperial!!

Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us ……

32Yes, it’s our 32nd birthday on Sunday and we are planning on a day of fun in the sun to celebrate with very possibly the first ever Tee Set round of Texas Scramble.

The Singing President has finally found time to break off from saving the planet as we know it and put the rules together – you will find them here.

Main thing to note is that each team will be drawn out of a hat on  the day – and have an “A” Grade and a B Grade player – and that a team will have  their individual handicaps added up and get one tenth of that as their team handicap.

The prizes on the day have a distinctly different feel for anyone who has ever played Tee Set before – and are as follows:

1.    Low net – winner

2.    Low net – runner up

3.    Low net – 3rd place

4.    Longest drive with a 1980s club (provided by us – sorry right handed only)

5.    Best dressed male (80s theme)

6.    Best dressed female (80s theme)

7.    Most drives taken overall

8.    Most drives taken from Handicap over 30

Please make sure that you are at the Sewangan Clubhouse and registered by 9,30 am so that we can get the flights etc sorted out – and so you can play with the benefit of a hearty breakfast inside you.

Green fees of 330,000 roops walking, or 490,000 in a cart. For the newcomers we are expecting, please note that there is a Tee Set fee of 100,000 to pay to our secretary also.

Tee off from at least two tees at 10;30. Sign up here if you haven’t already done so.

There are still a couple of rooms available on the Saturday night at the close-by Sewangan Villas in case you want to join in the fun of the Saturday afternoon round, followed by a magnificent Tee Set BBQ. The full story and the final chance to register is here.

See ya at the party!! ………… Tee Set

Lotus Lakes, Sunday August 16th 2015

HighlightsThe Day

Lotus Lakes, a long way down the Cikampek Tol is as far out East as we go, but journey times of around 1 hour in BOTH directions on Sunday was an absolute pleasure compared with the much geographically closer courses off the Jagorawi Tol courses these days – the nightmare of the Sunday evening returns from there, competing with the returning Puncak traffic, is not guaranteed to enthuse anyone.

The gentle shift away from the Jagorawi Tol courses effected by your committee for this year’s programme can surely be expected to continue next.

Merah putihIndonesian Independence Day tomorrow of course and a number of our less sartorially challenged members came out in Merah-Putih to mark the proximity of the great day. Well done them.

The promised start from two tee boxes at 11:10 failed to materialise with the Starter alleging we had booked just 5 flights and instead he got all 8 groups away from the first tee on the Jasmine course.

With that and up to 3 hours to negotiate those first nine holes there was to be no Starter tip this week.

Daniel

Daniel still able to finish a swing after 11 weeks away

Much faster when we moved onto the Lotus course for the second nine but 5 hours plus overall was a bit of a slog.

Excellent, spacious changing rooms and some very tasty food for a golf clubhouse served to repair some of the earlier reputational damage. But not all.

A very healthy 5 Newcomers to report this week, though we have some doubts about that designation for at least Kim Pham – welcome regardless, and enjoy your golf with Tee Set all!

A very modest 11 weeks for the biggest Welcome Backs, with the Gaisler family holding all 4 of the top places after their return from a rather extended leave in Europe.

The Play

Summary

bagsTop honours today to nowadays regular Tee Setter, David Baglivo, topping both Low Gross and Low Net overall with a fine 81-14-67 while our own pocket battleship Barbora wasted no time at all getting back into the swing of things with 85 off the stick – and she must have our next Interleague opponents quivering in their fancy golf shoes.

The Web Guy finally showed a return to some form with a net 68 to take Low Net – B Grade while Malty took the same award for C Grade with a rather higher than usual net 79.

First Birdie and First Sandy taken on the very first hole by Grumpy and Goetz respectively. The responsibilities of organising the 32nd Anniversary event with partner Octa is clearly not affecting the plain speaking Aussie’s game.

A relatively modest haul of just four Cross-Dressers this week though their quality more than made up for the quantity. “Cucu in a Tutu” added a little class to the usual photo, with her presence explained by failing to clear the red tee box at one point.

Cucu in a Tutu

Cucu in a Tutu

With 45 putts apiece, Jana and Kim were fortunate to get away with what would be a Monster Putter winning total most weeks, only being saved by Newcomer Niklas’s impressive 49 putts. Going to have to sharpen up on those greens, Niklas!

Most Strokes was once again a nice little earner with Malty, Mel and Goetz all contributing to the Treasury as a result of 11 strokes on a hole apiece.

More detailed player by player results are here while more photos of the day are on the Tee Set Gallery.

Next Up

The format at Sewangan is going to be a little different, reflecting the rather extraordinary nature of the day, with Tee Set’s first Texas Scramble for many years if not forever. The four man teams will come out of a hat to ensure the various talent levels are spread out evenly – and the whole lot then handicapped. Full details will be in our Thursday post.

Tee off at 10:30 from 1&10 and with bargain basement green fees of 330,000 roops walking – or 490,000 with shared cart. Register here as usual if you are playing just the Sunday – or go here if you also want to join us for some awesome fun on the Saturday afternoon and the evening BBQ, there are still a few rooms left.

A number of special 32nd anniversary Tee Set golf hats will be available for purchase next Sunday for a bargain 50,000 roops with all proceeds going to the incredible HOG Yayasan, a charity that does amazing things for the lives of Indonesian kids afflicted from birth by the terrible Cleft Palate/Cleft lip conditions. Don’t be caught without the new hat, it will be fineable offence apparently 🙂

See ya at Sewangan!! … Tee Set

Tee Set’s 32nd birthday celebrations

Unless you have been visiting the dark side of the moon recently then you will know that Tee Set is 32 years young this year – and that next weekend sees a celebration of that at the very course where it all started back in 1983, Sewangan Besar.

The format is an (optional) round on the Saturday starting at 1pm followed by one of Tee Set’s famous evening BBQs with the usual trimmings – and all looked after by the accumulated funds your canny treasurer has managed to squirrel away.

As ever at Tee Set BBQs, you are invited to bring along those favourite tinctures to supplement the beers and wine provided – and of course the always highly appreciated speciality cheeses, chocolates and whatever else to share with your mates.

Participants will then sleep it off in the extremely adjacent “villas” (a little rustic but perfectly adequate and with nice views of the lake) before being joined for breakfast on the Sunday by the day trippers and readying for the day’s Texas Scramble when we will be teeing of at 10:30 from 1 and 10 with green fees of 330,00 roops walking – or 490,000 if sharing a cart – the same as on the Saturday.

If you just intend playing ONLY on the Sunday, then register here as usual.

We are starting to run out of villas for the Saturday evening so if you would like to join us for an awesome fun that day, and haven’t already registered, then get yours reserved as soon as possible by completing the following form.

The “villas” come in at 530,000 roops apiece and can accommodate two grown ups – and the odd small person.

Everybody playing on the Saturday will receive a complimentary sleeve of Titleist balls bearing the Tee Set logo so that we can leave a record of our passing through the course.

Looking forward to seeing you all at what is going to be a very special event!! ……. Tee Set
