Next up: Lotus Lakes, Sunday 16th August

Lotus-LakesHot and dry is expected for our first return to Lotus Lakes out on the Cikampek Tol, the former Karawang International, in contrast to Tee Set’s very first event of the year in the middle of “Winter” on January 4th. Lots more pretty pictures of the course on their website where you will also find some delightfully tortured descriptions of the place, apparently translated from the original Japanese into English via Indonesian.

As you may read, the report of the day concluded that the course was a delight as always and that the new clubhouse was “magnificent”. It did also suggest that the course was a prime candidate for playing everyone off the whites; you will have to wait for Sunday morning to see if that plausible suggestion is taken on board by the grown-ups.

If you read the report then you may also have seen that we got away more than an hour early last time so it would not do to cut it too fine. No tears if you arrive late and have to join a group of Koreans playing for big bucks and take six hours.

Green fees of 750,000 including compulsory shared cart and with a first tee time of 11:10 from 1 and 10. If you haven’t already then sign up at “Yes I’m playing” as usual.

Tee Set’s 32nd Birthday at Sewangan

32 years since the Tee Set pioneers headed off down the first fairway at Sewangan Besar in our first ever event in 1983 and, as you will almost certainly know by now, we are celebrating this with a return to the course where it all started.

To make it something of a special event we are planning to make a weekend of it and have an optional round on the Saturday also – and one of our famous Tee Set BBQ parties on the Saturday evening with lots of family fun. We have already received firm bookings for 10 rooms and we need a minimum of another 5 to make the thing viable so, if you plan on attending, then get on the case now!

Rainbow Hills, Sunday 9th August 2015

Highlights The Day

The last 20 minutes of the drive to Rainbow Hills is always a test but, as Mel, Chris and the rest of us soon found out,  it was worth it for an excellent venue and two different and challenging courses.  The established Mountain 9 and the more recently carved out Stone Hills 9 offered some of the more intimidating elevations and deceiving lines off the tee.  Those hunting for Most Improved headed straight for the Stone Hills course.

20258734938_4291b88507_z

Cooler mountain air, great staff and caddies, and a clear course made for extremely pleasant round of golf, free from delays other than those caused by the occasional search for wayward balls.

A special welcome back after a full year away to Alan Fenwick who entertained his flight and caddies with a rich array of Indonesian curses, before being entertained himself by thesound of dangdut echoing through the hills.

Of course, traffic home was as appalling as usual, prompting a few old-hands to sensibly sit it out somewhere in Sentul before joining the queue.

The Play

How 4 eagles snuck in there – who knows – assume they are birdies 🙂

Summary

As we have explained before, Tee Setters can only be awarded one prize…holes in one being an exception, as Bags found out recently!

Mark Johnson’s fine round of 81 had him topping the table for Low Gross and Low Putts but in Tee Set tradition Low Net takes precedence and Mark was awarded the A grade Low Net with 69.

The Singing President with his best ever Tee Set round of 86 in taking Low Net B Grade Award with 66, again provoking the usual calls for handicap justice.  Low Gross went to Tim Knight with 87.  Wina somehow snuck into C Grade to take out Low Net C Grade with a 73 net (Wina had a 26 HC on the day therefore qualifying her for C Grade for once – ED).

20452978841_c72ccc2a40_z19824089444_fe7fe0dbb0_z

In the skills prizes, Jaco navigated the tricky greens with 31 putts, James was all smiles after his First Sandy on the 8th, Alan and John “Malty” Suermondt shared the 100k for First par Over 30. Special mention to Koen who challenged the Tee Set Most Improved record with a 22 stroke difference…going out in an awe-inspiring 70 on the admittedly challenging Stone Hills course.

20420509046_a1f873b3ac_z

20420510226_ec9e420387_z

And now for the fun….an unexpectedly low number of skirts at four, unexpected given the advanced ladies tees, with just 4 serial cross dressers keeping the Treasurer happy.  Alan was on safari on the Stone Hills par 5 8th with a 14 stroke efforts which took him across streams, up hills, into bunkers and eventually to a green where his playing partners gave him a warm welcome back to the group … and a 10ft gimme to put him out of his misery.

20258631770_560e9652f9_z

Last but definitely not least, Monster Putter Bags pictured below with his furry friend claimed his 43 putts were all because he made so many greens in regulation….yep.

20258718208_0efc1bec35_z

So, and as the sun set, and Mel “eventually” made it back to join his mates and the lovely Nadia in the clubhouse, where Ric and Brenda did a great job on the post-match and we left Rainbow Hills after another most enjoyable Tee Set day out up to that point, just a shame about that macet.

Matchplay results

Four matches were decided.  Cucu battled shot for shot with Jiro, closing it on the last for a strong 2 Up win and moved one step closer for a showdown with Tom who also downed Koen 4 and 3.  Geary is stealthily creeping through the field with a 2 up win over Jaco – a good battle from all accounts – with Jaco sculling one on the last which only marginally failed to penetrate the clubhouse window.  Jan Jelinek and Doug finally managed a time for their match, with Jan taking the honours 3 and 1.

Next up

A return to the delightful Lotus Lakes course out on the Cikampek Tol on Sunday where we will be away to an earlier than usual 11:10 start with green fees of 750,000 including compulsory shared cart.

While one of our most distant courses the travelling time can be expected to be very significantly quicker than from the early Sunday evening traffic blighted Jagorawi Tol courses.

Tee Set 32nd Birthday – Sawangan Besar – 22nd/23rd August 2015 – Tee Time: Saturday – As you arrive; Sunday – 10:30am

32 years

On Sunday August 23rd we will have a sentimental return to the place of our birth 32 years ago, with a fun day out at Sewangan Besar. Green fees of just 485,000 roops all in, or 330,000 if taking Shanks’ Pony out for a stroll. 10.30am start from at least 2 tee boxes so it should be a quick round.

Play on the Sunday will be a 4 man team scramble with the teams drawn from a very old Tee Set hat (with a modification that ensures A &B graders are distributed between the flights as evenly as possible) – a perfect chance to introduce learners to Tee Set!

The emphasis will be on FUN and fellowship.  Prizes will be a little zanier than usual with more than golf skills (or lack thereof) rewarded e.g. for the most colourful and imaginative golf attire (within the boundaries of etiquette of course) and a range of other categories yet to be dreamed up by the event organisers.

Every participant will also receive a unique 32nd Anniversary Edition Tee Set golf cap – and with anyone wearing the 2012 30th Anniversary shirt from the same venue getting a free jug of beer too!

There is also an opportunity to play a regular net round on Saturday afternoon if you wish – and that can be as serious as you like as all joining will be putting in 100,000 roops into the pot, with 50% each going to Low Gross and Low Net on the day!

Play on the Saturday, same rates, will start from anytime you like after 1pm – just give your card to the organisers afterwards so they can determine the winners,

After play on the Saturday there will be a complimentary BBQ and some left over drinks from Rancamaya provided by Tee Set for all those staying on the Saturday night thanks to your contributions through the year – and Octa and Graham.

Rumour has it that the Singing President will be living up to his name – and anyone else who wants to make a name for themselves is of course welcome to join in!

Don’t forget to bring your favourite nibbles and tinctures to add to the mix.

We have an urgent need to know the numbers for planning purposes, mainly so that we can reserve accommodation, so please register here just as soon as you can.

Jagorawi Z-Nine/Old Course, Sunday 2nd August 2015

Highlights

The Day

The club certainly went the extra mile with this accomodation for Ric and Craig to collect dues on Sunday

The club certainly went the extra mile with this accommodation for Ric and Craig to collect dues upon our arrival on Sunday

Thanks again to Richard Mau and the J.S.Luwansa for making this special offer available to Tee Setters.  As expected, registration was more complex than usual and  the club had to provide special accommodation (above) to your Committee so we could be there early enough officiate. A special welcome back to the Web Guy who now has to face the disasters created by other Committee members while he was in the old country.

Of the 70+ registrations, some as late as Saturday night, 66 arrived, and due to vouchers and per-arranged pairings were processed through a number of steps absent of Brenda.  Thanks to the conscripted help of Jags staff, Richard’s staff and Liz and Yunita,  and to Brenda for joining us later to process scores.  Thanks also to the flexibility of players in adjusting to the large numbers, pairings, chaotic start and disastrous half way point, where up to 12 flights were banked up on the 1st hole of the Old Course.

Sensible heads prevailed, however, and a number of groups took the initiative and scuttled off to different nines, some to the New Course and some back to repeat the Z-course.  All but one flight finished their rounds, which was a good effort after the first nine took over 3 hours, for the unlukiest but some lessons learnt about the capacity of clubs to manage large groups from Tee Set.  As a result of playing different course combinations, we decided to ignore technical arguments and award prizes regardless…

20226642126_839051d5bc_zHumid weather greeted us all as we snaked through the jungle on the testing Z-nine.  Many decided to set aside their complimentary Tee Set sleeve of balls and lose their own old ones, most notably Bushy who lost 14 on the day….typically like the rest of us, Bushy found reason to celebrate at the end of the day…before facing the dreaded Jagorawi toll and a two hour trip home.

Great day despite  the challenges!

The Play

Summary results

19631945873_5a80efb751_z

Fernando “El Guapo” Gaggino showing off his swing and striking red strides to a banked up gallery and some envious caddies on the Z-nine.

Some players really struggled with the tightness and curves of the course, but there were still some fine rounds, most notably from Jason Venderlinde (and doesn’t he look happy!) with a nett 70 to take out Low B-Grade and 74 nett rounds from Richard, Joseph and Santi in A Grade – with Richard winning on countback – and Tetty winning C Grade (congratulated by last week’s star Jan).

Joseph was rewarded for his 75 with Low Gross and Santi with first birdie, after Chris Smith had to leave early to catch a flight.  A rather laid back Graham claimed first sandy on the first hole and Debbie made up for a challenging round by winning first par for an over 30 handicapper – keep smiling Debbie!

John Johnson picked up Low Putts with an excellent 25 but took off before prizes, as did Daniel who was Most Improved with a hefty 20 stroke difference (Z-course was first!).

20066460389_fcb69f6122_zA special mention goes out to Tom Grace, back  after 12 weeks gallivanting around the world with Cucu, and called initially for Most Strokes on a hole – shared with Teddy – at 14.  Tom jumped up and down in celebration thinking it was a prize for his Eagle on the 11th….well done Tom, that prize was to come a little later.

And now for the other “winners’ among us.  A surprisingly low skirt count of just 7 raised some questions among scrutineers, but made for another great photo, with the highlight being Adam Dundas’ skirt on his first ever stroke with Tee Set.  Welcome Adam and it’s great you reached this important milestone so quickly.  We have all been there mate!

20065086020_48f4b2d1f4_z

Monster putter with 42 putts Hadi also left before prizes so missed out on his chance of Tee Set infamy.

Matchplay

Just one pair crazy enough to resolve their match up today with The Singing President being especially bold in putting his continued participation and matchplay record on the line against one time Interleague partner, Joe d’Cruz, on Joe’s home course. To balance the ledger, Joe was battling a nasty flu and a 6 shot handicap difference…calls of Captain Sandbagger could be heard from the peanut gallery!

They played the Z-nine twice. Craig found his tempo early and jumped to 5 up before Joe’s customary matchplay grit saw him clamber back to 1 down. Craig then steadied to win 3 and 2.  They scampered through the second nine so fast as a two ball they realised their match had been decided on the 7th hole after they had already finished the 8th – no comment.  After a mere one hour and fifteen minutes, Joe and Craig could see the flight behind them still on the 4th.

Next up: Jagorawi Old Course/Jagorawi Z-Nine Course, 2nd August 2015, 11am

oldAs expected when we play quality courses at huge discounts, registrations are already hitting 60, so it should be a great day out at the  Jagorawi Old Course where we will play 9 holes combined with 9 more on the Z-Nine Course.

Thanks to Richard Mau and J.S.Luwansa Hotel we have vouchers to subsidise the cost.  The cost to Tee Setters will be 535,000Rp including cart plus your normal Tee Set entry.  It’s a great course to walk and you are welcome to but your bag can ride on the cart with your caddy!  You will receive your free sleeve of Titleist balls on registration – you will need them!!  Your Committee will be there to assist with registration but given the large numbers and voucher system we ask for special patience this week.

Set the alarms a little earlier for a 11:00 start, most probably from two tees.  Sign up here if you haven’t already.  See ya at Jags!!

Imperial Golf Klub, Monthly Medal, 26th July 2015

19866222228_7e6e7e1e9f_z

The Day

As the sunset over Imperial, the Immediate Past President of Almost Everything, left alone at the helm, reflected on a day of milestones. It was the last day of the Idul Fitri holidays, meaning gridlock traffic would become the norm again come Monday. It was the sixth and final round of our fun eclectic competition held at the very popular Imperial Klub. Back to back with the eclectic round was the Monthly Medal where the Slaney’s meat voucher was up for grabs. If this wasn’t enough to entice players out on Sunday then the fast toll run and the empty course must have been the icing on the cake….and the caddies…what a difference a week makes!

20054476755_4bc8151327_zA record number of newcomers this week ably abetted by the presence of 8 recruits from Thailand. Welcome to Sompop Chancharoen, Boonyarit Jaiya, Chowvalit Meechow, Jaturaporn Pibankul, Moragot Krutaroj, Paisan Thanasitsomboon, Pongsawat Ratanawichen and Pridsada Naiwiriya.  Welcome guys!

20054792415_7093e9096a_z

Also playing their first games were Jean Pierre Falenbok and Josef Winter who we also offer a warm welcome to Tee Set. Oddly we were unable to entice any of the 10 newcomers to purchase the iconic Tee Set golf shirt but there is always next week. Welcome back players were Travis Mathews with a massive 176 weeks away, followed by Manoj with 41 and Debbie Minicola on 20.  Manoj was clearly keen for some healthy exercise:

Imperial - Summary

51 players making up 13 flights headed out from the restaurant after a light lunch and a few beers, amazingly ahead of our booked 11:45 tee time… a first for Imperial. The course was quiet, the round fast but still the sun was setting as we climbed the steps back to the clubhouse. Although plans had been put in place for a fast track entry of scores to be able to announce the eclectic winner a small SNAFU prevented this from happening.

Scorecards were not our usual specially designed monthly medal cards so players were a bit challenged to find space to write all the info required by Brenda. Coupled with poor lighting in the restaurant it was decided to just work out the monthly medal results and come back later with the eclectic champ once the committee has had the chance to double check all cards and calculations.  A suitably eclectic Perpetual Eclectic trophy will be ready by next month, along with a replica for the champ to keep.

Imperial is always a Treasurer’s favourite with 8 skirts recorded again.

19867430729_90c121fff1_z

All paid up their fines although I don’t see 8 in the photo. No monster putter or lowest putts were awarded this week due to the lack of space on the score card, but we can now at least recognise Jaroslav and Rasmus who, unlike many, managed to record their putts. Most strokes was King Tirto with 13 and today’s round of 121 may come back to haunt King after he started in poll position in the eclectic. Longest drive went to Joseph d’Cruz who was the only one to keep his ball on the belly of Madonna on hole 12. Closest to the pin was VP Simon Reynolds who strangely enough was the one who chose hole #5 for this challenge.

First birdie on the 2nd showed Bags is still shooting straight, first sandy was shared by Chowvalit and Graham on the 4th, Mick was happy to come back 14 strokes lighter for Most Improved, and Pastis Pascal, felt compelled to share his award for first par over 30 handicap with a rather nervous Brenda.

 19431145604_8729025ce4_z
Simon Reynolds again picked up Lowest Gross with a 79, which included a very strong back nine of 35.  Manoj showed the merits of resting and rehydration between holes winning Low Net A Grade, Koen shot a fine 67 net to win Low Net B Grade and Debbie celebrated her Tee Set return by winning Low Net C Grade.

Debbie

And now for the Monthly Medal and the Slaney’s meat voucher…drums rolling …a massive 45 stableford points this week by Jan Jelinek shooting 9 under his handicap. Jan has been steadily improving for some time.  Congratulations Jan on a fantastic round and those 45 stableford points are going to be hard to better in the future.

Tee Set Matchplay

Apologies to those whose matchplay results have not been conveyed yet. We can report from Facebook monitoring that VP Simon won his match with Mustafa 4 and 3, after being 3 down at one stage, to retain an undefeated matchplay record this year in interleague and Tee Set matchplay…to be fair to Chris Smith we have to acknowledge their epic draw in Tee Set’s round against Loose Impediments.

Next Up

This coming Sunday we have a special treat for Tee Set. Thanks to the generosity of Richard Mau of Luwansa Hotel, a one time only rate has been secured to play nine holes of the Jagorawi Old course coupled with the Z-nine. Jags being a private course there will be very few opportunities to play this course in stroke play unless you play with a member. The green fees with shared cart will be a never to be repeated Rp525K only so don’t miss this opportunity to play what many consider is the premier course of Jakarta.

Tee time is 11am so leave the bar and set the alarms a little earlier than usual…and register here.

Next up: Jagorawi Old Course/Jagorawi Z-Nine Course

oldTee Set’s run of courses of the very highest quality comes to a peak on Sunday with our first ever visit to the legendary Jagorawi Old Course where we will play 9 holes combined with 9 more on the also previously unvisited Z-Nine Course, a course even better than the Old Course in the view of some.

Your ever kindly committee has decided to take pity on the membership by giving away a sleeve of Titleist Tee Set balls to every Tee Setter joining what will be fabulous day. They will almost certainly be needed on what are both challenging tracks!

The courses are generally outside Tee Set’s price range, however, thanks to the generosity and support of Tee Setter Richard Mau and the JL Luwansa Hotel and Convention Centre, green fees for the day will be just 525,000 roops 🙂

Tee off will be at 11:30 from two tees; don’t miss the privilege of playing arguably the very finest courses in the Jakarta area. Sign up here to guarantee your place as turnout is likely to be very high.

Halim 1: Sunday, 19th July 2015

Highlights
The Day

Twenty one players showed up after twenty two were registered. Not a bad turn out with so many away for the Lebaran weekend. Most arrived early for a beer and a mie goreng before the scheduled 12PM start. A simple food menu but the sop buntut was excellent and there was plenty of cold cheap beer to wash it down with.

A few candidates for the Vasco De Garma award. Perhaps most startlingly, former President Geoff, after perhaps 40 years of going to the course, missed the turn off to Pondok Gede from the tol,  the Singing President went straight towards Taman Mini instead of left at the Mall meaning a 45 minute loop for him while Brad Burness ended up at Halim 3 instead of Halim 1. Just shows the modern technology of WAZE and Google Maps is pretty useless if you don’t know where you are going – or your handphone battery goes flat.

19848487965_bdd1b42396_zHalim 1 is a quirky but mature course with a straight forward layout designed not to challenge those interested in shaping the ball. Tee box 1 is almost as wide as it is long and a perfect starting hole for those feeling a bit seedy after the previous night’s activities. Many compared it to the suburban or rural public courses on which they first played the game in their own countries.  Very reasonable green fee of Rp466K puts Halim 1 on the to be re-visited list.

The caddies are generally aged and not of the handbag carrying sort and therefore rather less glamorous than usual, but were lots of fun and willing to provide the usual Halim free-coaching.

Welcome back to Kenny Black who has not played for so long that he does not show up in the web guy’s records. However he was sporting a 2011 Championship shirt so with some rough cals we deduced 197 weeks since last we saw Kenny play Tee Set. Just one new player to welcome from Finland, Jari Rahtu, who also took out First Sandy on the 6th. The web guy may confirm this …. he is a real gentleman on the course. Likes the occasional Bintang or two as well….

The Play

Summary

(The Web Guy confirms that Jari is the in fact the 7th Finn on our books)

19660414000_01e06ec8f6_zNote the immense club-shaking power of Former President Geoff as he tees off on the first on the way to his birdie after hitting the green in regulation and sinking the 3 metre put. A par on the next hole showed his intentions were for a low round and this was proved with the low net B grade prize.

Supreme recovery from a nasty bout of bad beer poisoning last week…well done young fella!

19227394313_9cb6ed179a_zBrad Burness, had an eventful round earning both the only skirt and most strokes on a hole with 12. However he was to be all square on the day taking most improved with 14 strokes. In a rare Tee Set occurence, Brad got to wear both the skirt and the wig. Come back soon, Brad!

Anlo was again in fine form, winning Low A Grade and Simon took out Low Gross with an 83, a round that promised much more after an excellent 37 front nine.  Luiz shot a net par round to win Low C Grade.

Lots of ties for prizes meant that the Former Immediate Past President for Almost Everything took over the reigns at the presentation ceremony, with first birdie going to James Ross on the 5th after Simon and Geoff had won other prizes.

Small, slow but true greens meant for a rather modest putting outcomes on the day.  Chris Smith was on fire on the front nine and won Low Putts with 29, again because Simon won low gross.  He tied with Mike and Geoff but won on a countback.  Again the 40 putt threshold was not reached so no Monster Putter this week.

19853121211_96349d180b_zSunday’s round was the last in Jakarta for Thurmond Borden after first playing with Tee Set on the 26th August 2012 at Kedaton.

After 43 rounds with Tee Set, Thurmond is still enjoying his golf although the handicap remained just as stubborn to budge as the day he arrived.

We wish him all the best in his retirement back in the States and for that handicap to go into free fall with unlimited golfing opportunities
