Rainbow Hills, Sunday 10th May 2015

Highlights summaryThe day

A number of those still licking their wounds after spending last Sunday in a traffic jam and failing to get any golf in were to shrug it off and try again today. Well done to all of them, you know who you are!

No such issues this morning as everyone but Wina was there in good time, and without incident to enjoy breakfast, though not on the terrace on this occasion as a massive tent was covering the front of the clubhouse so as to accommodate the Club’s own Monthly matchplay apres-play.

Les girslBusy day for the starter managing 120 players on the monthly medal and then another 31 Tee Setters all eager to try out the new Stone Hill nine. Thought we were to set off half and hour late, all managed to finish before dark but it was touch and go for a while with the pace of play being pedestrian in parts. A mildly Bintang fuelled committee discussion after the event decided that persistently slow groups will be put at the back of the field in future.

Glamour was still available despite the unwelcome change in restaurant staff uniform from small handkerchief sized to full length sarong. We are told that weekdays the handkerchief uniform is back, so we’ll be testing this theory on the return journey from Rancamaya next Monday.

The run back into town at less than an hour and a half was a suitably excellent end to an excellent day.

Summary

Daniel

We are sure that regular Grade A winner Chris Murchison will forgive us for giving star billing this week to our youngest ever major prize winner, 9-year-old Daniel Gaisler, who was to take Low Net B Grade with a 72.

Daniel pictured here with but a small cross-section of his fan club in the background!

Well done Daniel, and we suspect this is not the last time you will be getting your red one back!!

Busy green

Congrats also to the other Grade winner, Tim Frear and indeed Low Grosser, Tim Knight.

While the “Stone Course’s” nine holes at Rainbow is clearly a fantastic new asset for Jakarta golfers, it is undoubtedly a tough challenge, not least on the greens which are larger than average and where is difficult to find a flat spot. Despite this, Mark Johnson’s inability to find a green in regulation together with his steely concentration on the putting surface is an object lesson for all Tee Setters in how to reduce their scores.  In the process Mark put Fernando “El Guapo” Gaggino to the sword with a 4 and 2 victory in their matchplay, allowing El Guapo to slide back into his Supreme Commander role and his usual pursuit of taking his playing partners’ money.

The Web Guy found a wayward driver, a non-functioning chipper and a propensity for finding bunkers all too much on the Stone Course in delivering a career worst Tee Set score of 59 to set up Most Improved of 14 strokes with a 45 on his back nine.  We also saw and end to his excellent run on putting, blamed in part to the constant trampling of his line by playing partner “Malty” Suermondt.

The Former President of Almost Everything snuck back in again for a skills prize to mask his overall performances with a birdie on the first while Leona featured yet again with First Par over 30 Handicap which more than covered her Most Strokes fine.

No Sandy Pars recorded, despite 10 unsuccessful attempts by the Singing President, due mainly to lousy putting – yes, Malty S was trampling his line too!

In the other battle, Jaco got off to a flyer against matchplay veteran Tom Alcedo, only to falter and let Tom in on the back nine.  No doubt Tom’s uncanny ability to hit the ball from 100m all the way along the ground to within single putting range shook Jaco’s confidence, but not quite enough, and Jaco escaped with a narrow 1 up win.  Jan and John decided to postpone their match to an easier course – a decision both were very happy with after their respective unrewarding rounds though Malty was Anal enough to score the two cards and reckoned he would have won one up!!

Dave Baglivo gave those of us waiting on the first tee a taste of things to come next Saturday night, speeding off to follow his tee shot, with Marvin Gaye and the rest of Motown joining him and Geary in his mobile music machine.  They say tempo is everything in a golf swing Dave!

Skirts

Excitement as Tiger Woods joined the rest of the Tee Set cross-dressers this weekend, when the funds were to get a significant boost as he mistakenly understood the 50,000 fine to be in dollars rather that rupiah.

Fuller, player by player results here .

Next up – the Rancamaya weekend

Exciting news from the organisers that, to add to the BBQ, Jazz band, Bouncy Castle (yeeeesssssssssss) and all the rest, has been added a Margarita machine that produces probably the very finest of the ilk to be found in these parts.

Ranc PlayersWe also have to report that the hotel is now full for the weekend, so, if you are not one of  then it is, unfortunately, not now possible to join in the fun for the entire duration.

If you are signed up for the weekend but find that you are, for whatever reason, not able to fulfil your commitment, then please let us know immediately so that we can make use of your room.

Sunday will however see us playing the traditional Tee Set affair and Tee Setters who are not booked for the weekend are of course extremely welcome to join then – just sign up here … if you have already signed up for the weekend then DO NOT sign up again as you will confuse the VP – Lists – and make him sulk again.

The full itinerary and info pack will be despatched to all participants by e-mail on Thursday, however for now it is important for you to know that play on Saturday is even more disorganised than usual.

So take lunch, form up into your own groups and get out there and start playing before 14:00 – and make sure you are washed, scrubbed and on parade in time for the evening’s festivities by no later that 7pm.

Pretty frocks and expensive perfume for the ladies and beachware or smarter for the guys is about the only dress code guidance we can offer.

See ya at Rancamaya!! … Tee Set

Rainbow Hills, Sunday 10th May 2015

TerraceIf you played Gunung Geulis last weekend and got stuck in the Puncak traffic then we hope you have recovered – and are pleased to tell you that Rainbow Hills, our course this Sunday, is much easier to get to, at least by comparison; just remember to come off the Jalan Tol from Jakarta at the Sentul City exit – and follow the signs.

Getting there early is rewarded with coffee and even breakfast as you take in the delightful Rainbow Hills Terrace vistas. Really not to be missed – and the flight coordinator needs an easy Sunday after the trials of last week.

Tee off from 1 & 10 at midday with green fees of a very reasonable 708,000 roops for a course of the highest quality, the best in the Jakarta area in the opinion of some, though the course website’s own description of itself as “destined to take its place among the world’s a great course (sic), Rainbow Hills in (sic) Indonesia’s finest Golf Course” is probably a tad OTT.

Still room, so sign up here if you haven’t already.

Finally an opportunity to pick up some hi-class clubs from Craig Binks  – or a house rent in Cibubur from Harold Hayne.

See ya over the Rainbow ….. Tee Set

The Day

Having fun

Getting to Gunung Geulis is a challenge at the best of times but, on a long weekend, many Tee Setters had other plans and even of those who had committed, many either got stuck in Puncak traffic and arrived very late or were forced to compete for the Vasco da Gama Award and explore the back roads of West Java.

Old hands knew to seek advice from the club in advance and took the route past Rainbow Hills while some first timers followed Google Maps and found themselves snaking through narrow half made village roads and eventually entering the golf course through the back gate, completing the last part of their magical mystery tour between holes on the course’s maintenance roads.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight promised pre-game entertainment but delivered sedation for the early comers and they gladly took off at 12 noon as scheduled, before many had even arrived.  Regrettably the Gaisler family arrived so late they decided to skip golf and have lunch before braving the trip back.

No shows and latecomers put the flights coordinator into a mental tailspin and he was eventually to just fill the first couple of flights with people who were actually present – and at 12:00 buggered off to play himself in the second group off 10, leaving latecomers to sort out their own fate – something at which they were conspicuously successful.

Rain 2The weather was also to be rather unkind, with the start in a light drizzle which became stronger for a few minutes around the 3rd hole before stopping – only to return towards the end when conditions could only be described as “English grim” with the mountain air turning very cold and high winds driving the rain – and making all the Pommies homesick! (and a few Kiwis – ED)

Gunung Geulis is a true gem, with established landscaping and breathtaking views, starting with the Big Drop on the first hole.

Even in the rain it was all a welcome break from the concrete jungle that is Jakarta and many came through with very solid rounds. Taking just a little of the shine off the wonderfulness were several greens having been recently cored and sanded.

Among the brave hearts were Anthony King and Mark Fiorella, welcomed back after 22 and 10 weeks away respectively and who went straight back to battle in the Matchplay with Mark giving Anthony a “dog license” – winning by 7 and 6.

With the long weekend and the likely Puncak traffic clearly in mind, many were eager to get home at some time before next week and set off immediately with scant regard for forgoing their prizes.  Those who stayed for a while to break bread with their brethren were surprised by the unbelievably traffic-free run home – and are still all in shock from a journey of just 60 minutes door-to-door.

The Play

Results summary

AnloAnlo had a fine day, finishing on top of both Low Gross and Low Net A grade, sparking a discussion over which prize had priority. Fortunately, Mark, who had come second in both categories was not there, so Anlo was recognised for both.

We would confirm that Tee Set, as is tradition, gives precedence and greater honour  to the lowest net result (“Tee Set is a Net Golf Society”: P. Reichlmeier, Newsletters passim) so expect this for future events when both winners are actually present at prize giving.

As the scores show, a decent proportion of Tee Setters relished the course and shot their best rounds for a while, while others struggled.  Both Santi “Mrs Pie” Miller and the Singing President fell victim to the first hole with both the “Big Drop” and the pot bunkers eating up 15 and 10 strokes respectively.

The Web Guy, aka Mr.Pie, was for the second consecutive week, able to master the art of fringe dwelling in taking Lowest Putts, this time with a relatively high 30 on difficult greens

Jan and Anthony making up in enthusiasm for what they lacked in numbers

Geoff “Scam Buster” Thwaites, a title he for some reason prefers to his other ones of “Caddie Whisperer” and “Leader of the Bash”, came back from last week’s disappointment with a vengeance, claiming Low Net B Grade with a 71.

Geoff again avoided his skirt photo, but remaining cross-dressers, Anthony and Jan were more than comfortable without Geoff joining them.

LeonaAnthony won his skirt money back with Most Improved after a terrible first 9 (for him) of 53.

Leona, one of three wet Czechs playing through the rain, again featured in the winners circle taking Low Net C Grade, with Jan also battling through and Ales opting for the comfort of cart and caddy after a 10 on the 16th and a wayward drive on the 17th.

Leona also had the first par for an over 30 handicap but had already won her prize – no doubt she will compete again with Jan, John S and others for that next week!

Rancamaya “Stay and Play”

37 Players and 19 significant other are all booked into 28 rooms for the Rancamaya Weekend 16th/17th May, a weekend that promises to be a cracking event – with two rounds on the finest course in Jakarta @ 610,000 roops a pop – and heavily discounted rooms, a Bouncy Castle, Jazz Band, BBQ and enough tinctures to float an Italian Cruise Liner – and all on Tee Set.

Those who have already joined can check that we have them on the list here while for those who haven’t signed up then there is still time to make sure you experience the fun – and of course you’re very welcome to just roll up on the Sunday morning for the usual Tee Set round at 11:30.

HOGFest

Sales a little better for the HOGFest event next Saturday evening but we are still looking for more Tee Setters to join us in supporting those awfully disadvantaged Indonesian kids afflicted with cleft palate and cleft lip – and have great fun at one of Jakarta’s signature events where we hope to have 2 Tee Set tables.

The Hogfest is the evening before our next round so just drop us a line here to reserve your ticket and we will make sure they get to you or you can pick them up at  the door. Tickets are just 700,000 roops pop, a sum that will be matched by Tee Set up to a maximum of 10 million so, don’t be shy, as you will be greatly supporting those kids as well as having fun!

golf_club_rainbowhills_golf_headerAnyone who has played there will tell you that Rainbow Hills is a quite fantastic course – and Tom and Cucu played it last Saturday and confirmed it is in tip-top condition. 2 shot penalty, guys; each.

Green fees of just 728,000 including shared cart and with a tee time of 12 noon. Getting there early gets you time to take breakfast and marvel at the Mountain views and indeed the traditional but updated with modernity skirts of the lovely waitresses. Sign up here as usual.

Next up: Genung Geulis, Sunday 3rd May 2015

GG

Genung Geulis is a  quite stunning  course nestling in the Bogor area mountains – and is certainly one of the Tee Setters favourite Sunday venues.

If, as is likely, we play the West course, then those who haven’t played before are in for a shock as they are forced to look down the barrel of a more than 100 metres drop to the 1st fairway – and with more than 100 metres of jungle to carry in order to get to that fairway. Bravehearts only!

12 midday tee off from 1 & 10 and with green fees of a reasonable 750,000 rupiah including shared cart. Sign up here to join in the fun on what promises to be a great day in the sun.

Tee Set Eclectic

Yep, it’s the Tee Set  Eclectic, the comp that hardly anyone knows they are in 🙂

Leading standings to date, through sub-net 70, are as follows:

Eclectic scores

Norman’s consistently strong play in recent months, and having played all three events so far, is reflected in his number 1 position – but there are still three events to go of course – and there are plenty in the pack behind him.

Interestingly, DOGS run such a format all the time – and we now learn that they only allow “half handicap”! – too late for us to change of course, even if we wanted to 🙂

Prizes/trophies? …  yep, we will probably be able to announce something or other after the committee next gets round to meeting on licensed premised but, as ever with Tee Set, you should not anticipate being able to retire on a good result – the bragging rights have far higher value of course.

Communications? … we promise to get better, the table you see above will be updated and made available after each Monthly Medal in future.

HOGFest – Saturday 9th May

Tee Set is a strong and long time supporter of the HOGS and the work they finance in giving Indonesian kids with cleft lip and/or cleft palate a chance at a life worth living, something they really don’t have with the condition untreated.

We know Tee Setters to be both charitably minded and lovers of fun, so we have been extremely disappointed by the response to date to the HOGFest event on Saturday 9th May, an event that has traditionally been the main source of funds for the HOGS work. We would be truly saddened to see those HOGS having to cut back on their scheduled 120+ operations this year due to any lack of support from us.

That HOGfest is loads of fun is a given and to encourage you on the charitable side, we will be matching the value of all tickets purchased by Tee Setters to the event up to a maximum of 10 million Rupiah. Have a look at the event details here.

We will have tickets available at Gunung Geulis on Sunday but appreciate that not everyone who would like to go to the HOGFest will be there, so a chance here to reserve your tickets – we will get them to you somehow.

← Back

Thank you for your response. ✨

Warning
Warning

Warning.

The entire Tee Set committee will be attending to have fun and show their support to a truly great cause – and hope that as many other Tee Setters as possible will join them at their capacious table

Thank you for your support – and see you at GG, and we hope at the HOGFest too !! …. Tee Set

Imperial Golf Klub, Sunday 26th April 2015

Results banner

The day

46 Tee Setters showed up to Imperial in the most glorious weather in order to chance their arm at becoming the 24th Monthly Medal Winner. With all except Wina there in at least good time, we were all breakfasted and ready to go for if the Starter were to call us a little early.

Unfortunately, our roaming spies were to report five or more groups of non-Tee Setters still infesting both the 1st and 10th tees, reports that were to prove accurate unfortunately – and with inevitable consequences for us getting off; 45 minutes late minimum and worse on the 1st hole than the 10th if anything 🙂

Caddy struggling to find home

Even the caddies struggled to find the clubhouse

To add to our woes, the clouds were to come over and the heavens open to the accompaniment of lightning an hour or so into the round, bringing about a 20-30 minute rain stop for most.

Remarkably, all groups got through and put in their cards, though the later ones finished in near total darkness. Well done all.

Overall it has to be said that with its attractive rates and otherwise fine and friendly service, we can’t complain too much.  Last time we played monthly medal at Matoa it was no better, and most will agree that Imperial offers better golf and post-match views. We have however made representations in the appropriate quarters – and hope for much better next month.

Kevin Quinn

Well done on avoiding the skirt, Kevin!

A warm Tee Set Welcome to Kevin Quinn on his first round with us – and Welcome Backs after lengthy breaks to Rasmus Kilde and Giles Taarland – and to Mark Kilner, Anirudh and Tarun after slightly shorter absences.

Rasmus has been in Indonesia for some 13 years now and this was his third round with us – but this one only two and a bit years after the last, he is definitely getting more regular.

The debate about hitting off white or blue tees flared again with those in favour of the white tees, at least for C graders, arguing that they are called the members tees and give more players an opportunity of going for par 4 greens in regulation.

Those against simply say, why change? …  and prefer to play off championship tees (blue) every week.   And both men and women don’t want to give up distance to C graders off the tee in Matchplay.  So, let it rage on for another week or so, and the Committee will rule on a proposal to make playing off the white tees compulsory for C Grade players and what to do about Matchplay.

In the interim please note that play off the white tees are ALREADY permissible for the 65 (years of age) and overs and C Graders – you just have to tell us so that we get your handicap right. It is however a once and for all decision in most circumstances.

The play

Imperial results

If you don’t have the eyesight of a Garuda then you may wish to click on the above to see the Rancamaya results in full size.

The month’s principal honours and a place on the Monthly Medal shield goes to Thurmond Borden who played one of his finest rounds ever to take out the Monthly Medal and the virtual Slaney’s meat voucher, with 40 Stableford points.  The real vouchers for Thurmond and one or two previous winners are waiting on Ric meeting Dick on licensed premises.

Some fine rounds were played in spite of the rain, with Simon Reynolds again winning low net with 82 and three net winners shooting under par, Fernando with 71, Chris Lever keeping up his fine Interleague form with a 70 and another Matchplay victory this time over Peter, and Jaco with a 69 off his adjusted handicap of 29 to demonstrate his steady improvement.

Most improved thanks to a  very wayward front nine went to Glenn with 13, the Former President of Almost Everything won first sandy par on the 1st hole before the skies fell in as he carded a quite sensational 64 on the front 9. Welcome Backer Giles Taarland hit the jackpot in taking the red one for a 255 meter drive – and 6 of Santi’s pies in the absence of the winner of the CLosest to the Pin.

Worthwhile reminding all, as we must do periodically, of the Tee Set “Rule” that your presences at Prize Giving is compulsory if you are to receive a prize, so be there or be square – and no tears.

First birdie went to Murcho, while King won first par over 30 handicap in amongst his best ever Tee Set round, a Ricard fuelled round of course – and motivated by the promise of a frozen Margarita or three at the finish.

Special mention has to go to Jess today for a remarkably mixed bag of results – going down to the steady Leona 8 and 6 in Matchplay but taking the prize for Nearest to the Pin.  Jess’s accuracy was short-lived however as he combined a skirt and monster putter with as astonishing 55 blows of what must have been a not-so-flat stick.

2015 Tee Set Matchplay

There were a number of notable match play tussles, among them the “Presidents Cup”, with Former President Geoff Thwaites up against the Singing President, in a match of two halves – the Singing President getting to 6 up before the Caddy Whisperer, known for his strong ANZAC fighting spirit, opened his first beer, started talking dirty again and pegged it back to 1 up with 2 to play, before the Singing President stopped the rot with a par on the 17th to avoid an historic come back or choke (depending on your point of view).

Other results we know of from Sunday

Lever/Groen 5/4
McQuatar/Kaempt 8/7
Leona/Jess 8/6

Some demonstrations in there that handicaps don’t always fully level the playing field.

Skirt recordsPerhaps the outstanding news of the day, however, was the length of the Skirts list as some 13 of you, or nearly one in three of the 41 Tee-Setters playing who shave most mornings, failed to make it to one or more of the ladies tees.

Yes, a new record of 13 of us took the cross dressing route today, beating the title proudly held by Senayan for 14 months until today. A special thank you to you all from the Treasurer.

Most notable amongst the notables was Fernando recording his first ever skirt in his 45th round with Tee Set, at least he had plenty of company.

Skirts

As you may deduce, many skirted off (sic) early and missed the photo, rather less forgivably two of then without paying their 50,000 roops fine  …don’t worry, we will track you down, we know where you live 🙂

Imperial Champions Trophy (Eclectic)

We promise to report the current status of the Imperial Champions event, an “eclectic” based on best net scores per hole on all rounds at Imperial, on Thursday.   The leaders after two rounds were Tom Grace and Cucu – but who knows where the hell it stands now? – watch this space.

Rancamaya “Stay & Play”

Everything well in hand and rooms booked for all who have registered to date. If you now book then note that not all room types are available – with the more exotic ones in particular being in short supply.

As mentioned by the Singing President today, some pretty crap budgeting has left us with a surplus of funds and Tee Set will be subsidising accommodation to the extent of 12 million roops – this will be distributed in the form of vouchers with a value based upon how many times those staying overnight on the Saturday have played since the last Tee Set Championship.

The last qualifying round for these purposes was today, and the latest time for being included in the scheme is tomorrow, Wednesday 29th April – so register NOW if you haven’t done so already, there have been enough opportunities so, once again, no tears.

Next up

Bogor - Gunung Geulis West 3It is all of an astonishing seven months since we last played that magnificent mountain course, Gunung Geulis (cries from off-stage of “sack the committee”). Not totally surprising however as it is in the Bogor area and therefore best avoided from November until March as a minimum.

A noon tee off from 1 & 10 – but whether West or East not known as usual, but green fees including cart of a definite 750,000 roops.

Sign up here as usual for what should be a cracking day regardless of West or East.

See ya Sunday!! … Tee Set

Pondok Cabe, Sunday 19th April 2015

The day

With the Interleague team and some supporters away at Jags, just 22 Tee Setters were to be blessed with clear blue skies and searing  heat once again, this time at Pondok Cabe. Around half of those Tee Setters were to arrive within 15 minutes or less of the advertised tee time and a few even after it. With the Starter getting us away 10 minutes early this generated intense confusion as we tried haplessly to assemble complete flights where there weren’t any. As ever it all sorted itself out, however, it made for more excitement than is welcome – PLEASE  try to get to our venue at least 30 minutes before  the scheduled tee time.

NewcomersA couple of Newcomers to report in Matt Otto and Michael Montgomery and Matt Otto; welcome guys and enjoy your golf with Tee Set.

Leading the Welcome Backs by a long, long way at 125 weeks was Axel Hertzke who was to protest that he had never played with us before – until he finally remembered getting a free shirt at the Tee Set Championship at Matoa in 2012!

That searing heat was thankfully only to last a few holes as we got rescued by cloud cover and, with few holes to go, thunder and lightning was to set in though far enough away for play to continue though a few were to drop out – while the 2 final groups were to get one over their heads on the 18th before scampering for the safety of the cold and low conductivity Bintang in the clubhouse. It is a scientifically proven fact that you will never be struck by lightning while you have a cold Bintang in your hand. Bear in mind.

The play

Skills

Jan JeliOutstanding performance from 30-handicapper Jan Jelinek with a 52-39-91 and a net 63 to take Low Net for Grade C players – and Harold Hayne too full advantage of the white tees, as is his right, to come in with a net 69 to take the Grade B honours while Sofree’s rather more sedate net 74 was good enough to take Grade A.

SofreeWe don’t see too many eagles at Tee Set but Matt Kaempf brought one home today in a day of mixed fortunes for him while our Newcomers were to make an impression on the scoreboard with Jochen Sautter’s 26 blows with the flat blade winning him Low Putts – and a birdie on his sixth hole as played allowing Michael Montgomery to take home a red one. Won’t happen every week guys!

Boobies

Can’t remember the last time it happened but there were NO SKIRTS to report this week and, to add to the Treasurers woes, Chris Till, who hadn’t put in his card having abandoned play due to the lightning, owned up to 12 strokes on a hole to let four others on 10 strokes off the Most Strokes “award” – while high putts on the day were below the 40 mark which meant that Matt Kaempf, on a very mixed day for him, was to keep the blue one in his pocket.

Interleague

Our non-playing captain and Former President of Nearly Everything reports a fine 8-2 win over POCKSIA to leave our heroes firmly at the top of the Interleague with three wins from 3 matches – and having dropped a scant 4 points in the process. Full details to follow on Thursday.

While chicken counting can be saved for another day, having beaten the favourites and a couple of the stronger teams, Tee Set are now well placed to take the Interleague Championship this year for the first time ever.

With an 11:48 start, the light shouldn’t be this bad as we finish ……

Yep, the Tee Set Monthly Medal is back in its rightful slot on the last Sunday of the month, 26th April, at Imperial Golf Klub with a K. We will have all the usual prizes plus a Slaneys voucher for 500,000 roops and 6 of Santi’s finest pies – together with the long absent Nearest to the Pin and Long Drive awards. Next up: Pondok Cabe, Sunday 19th April 2015

PCPondok Cabe’s attractive pricing for both the course itself and its F&B, have long contributed to its above average popularity, as have the continuous improvements over the years, improvements that have turned it into a very decent course – and, as ever, possessed of those wide friendly fairways that Tee Setters find particularly attractive 🙂

With the Interleague team at Jags and a significant number of our players representing other teams there, we can hardly expect to see the 43 that turned out in February – but early registrations indicate that maybe 25 is on the cards. Who knows?

Anyway, the full array of prizes and awards are on offer so, if you haven’t already, then come and join us for the fun on and off the course on Sunday by signing up here. Tee off from 1 & 10 at 11am – and green fees of just 520,000 all-up, or 410,000 walking. God bless Pertamina.

Hardly any need to bring your esskies this week with the prices available from the well organised “on-course entrepreneurs”, always looking gorgeous in their fashionable and colourful hijabs by the way, are very competitive with your local 7/11 as well as offering the cheapest lake balls in town – and balls of a decent quality too; your scribe always takes the opportunity to stock up at PC!!

See ya there! …. Tee Set

PS best of luck to our Interleague boys (yep, no girls again, hiss boo) in their match against POCKSIA on Sunday. Our team is selected, serious and ready to go, even engaging in activities for which they would get a 2-shot penalty on a Sunday morning with Tee Set, like going to the driving range, and chipping practice and stuff like that. We forgive them and look forward to a great win!

Palm Hill, Sunday 12th April 2015

X Skirts

Some old, some new, some borrowed,, some, errrr, pink …

The day

A very healthy 45 Tee Setters rolled up on the hottest day of the year so far to take on the challenge of one of our favourite courses, Palm Hills. Registrations were up to 56 at peak but a variety of causes, from illness to business conflicts and tsunamis in the Philippines, adversely affected the final roll call.

A rumour was running hot that, having registered, our prodigal son Sam Westen was going to make a rare appearance but, alas, it was not to happen.

X Newcomers

A high-five Newcomers to welcome to Tee Set, however, and some huge Welcome Backs, both influenced by today being a break in the DOGS calendar of events – leaving some of them in dire need of a round.

DOGS are always welcome to join us of course – and the course management like you coming along too as you invariably raise the average beer consumption per head significantly 🙂

Maybe there's something to this Tee Set lark ..

Maybe there’s something to this Tee Set lark .. Ian  practising “leaning in” ….

Welcome or Welcome Back to them all as appropriate, not least to Ian Smith DOG who appears  to have lost our address as it is some 876 weeks since he last joined us – that is mid-1998 for those possessed of a rusty 52 times table.

Some of those DOGS were unhappy that we don’t recognise handicaps from that august institution – guys, we have to tell you that Tee Set doesn’t accept handicaps from anyone, including the Royal and Ancient itself; so live with it – and instead send us four cards for rounds played in the Jakarta area in the last three months – and you will have a shiny new Tee Set handicap next time you play with us!!

X waitressWhile we got away a little early, play was to be less than brisk with around five hours being the norm – though thankfully the sun later got subjected to some cloud cover that enabled the second nine to be played in the most delightful of conditions and, even though there was a little threatening thunder, we were not to see any rain until all were safely back in the clubhouse; a clubhouse resembling a building site in parts, but a building site which functioned efficiently as always with its gorgeous staff, though finding the changing rooms and getting a locker proved something of a challenge for many.

With the singing President arriving late after wedding duties in Depok, the Former President of Almost Everything was called upon to make an executive decision to bring back into play the second rule of Tee Set. That is “play it as it lies.” There were quite a few grumbles from the lift clean and cheat brigade but the wry smile of satisfaction on the FPAE’s face said it all.

There was total chaos just before noon when carts/caddies were in short supply and golf bags were spread far and wide between the caddy shack and player assembly area, but all was forgiven when the sanctuary of the club house was reached after the round.  The exorbitant price of beer was to dampen proceedings only a little though, and certainly not enough to worry the restaurant management into lowering their prices. Of course the salary of all those pretty waitresses has to come from somewhere.

Did we mention the staff? … wow, their new outfit is even higher up the thigh than their previous one and proved something of a distraction to rational thought for the committee at least, delaying announcement of the awards by at least 10 minutes.

The play

X Skills

X Paid for Lena's BaksoSimon Reynolds had his usual steady day at the office to take low gross – with Sam’s no show that spot was never to be in jeopardy. Chris and Ric made welcome returns to form taking ‘A’ and ‘B’ Low Net while Lina smashed her handicap by 8 strokes to take ‘C’ Low Net and lowest of the day by some way, well done Lina!!!

Chris Chan will remind us next week of his brilliant putting form from the week before which will pay his next entrance fee. Doug, Bags, and James picked up money while Luiz pulled back a win to take first par over 30 to offset some of his fines.

X Boobies

Monkey businessThe treasurer was happy after first selling 5 shirts but then collecting 6 skirt fines was icing on the cake. Rina took monster putter but we decided she didn’t have to wear the mask for obvious reasons while James Ross came out all square on the day after achieving a full house of prizes and fines.

More detailed, player by player, results can be seen here while more photos of a fine day are on the Tee Set Gallery.

Tee Set Matchplay Championship

Sofree Abdul beat last year’s champion, David Baglivo in a tight match going 1 up. Rather clever of David to lose this match since he knows that the overall winner always comes for the Kuning side of the draw.

Chris Smith did well to beat a wounded Billy Lloyd although he did need the last hole to do it.

Alistair Livingston didn’t bring his A game but his B game was enough to take out an erratic Bushy by 3 and 2.

Still a few games remaining to be played in round one so please, all those who have yet to get started, shake a leg or two and get them out-of-the-way before the end of the month or Fernando “Attila the Hun” Guapo will be heavily on your case.

Rancamaya “stay and play” weekend

Pleased to report that 25 Tee Setters have already signed up for the Rancamaya Weekend with 35 pax so far including non-playing partners and kids.

Looks like it is going to be a big one – and the Treasurer has finally agreed that we will be having a Tee Set “Bouncy Castle” for the weekend – so long as we get 10 kids along! Four Tee Setters today promised to be kids and use the Bouncy Castle and, while this would get us over the line, the Treasurer declared them not to be kids despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Also lined up now is a golf clinic from a renowned expat professional from 8.30-11am – and the Singing President was muttering something today about a chipping competition also, so there will certainly be no lack of activity. Some of us will of course maintain the habits of a golfing lifetime and instead enjoy the stunning views of Mount Salak while taking breakfast on the clubhouse terrace.

Go here now to get more info and sign up for the weekend if you haven’t already done so, it promises to be an event second only to the Tee Set Championship in our calendar.

Next up

A return to the much improved and increasingly appreciated Pondok Cabe  next Sunday when your wallet will be able to recover from the shock of Palm Hills beer prices – as well as smile at the sensibly priced green fees of 520,000 all in – or just 410,000 walking.

While we are enjoying the delights of Pondok Cabe, the Interleague team will be hoping to continue their dream start to the season by beating the POCSIA team. Good luck to them as, not least, the Former President of Almost Everything is promising a blow-out Tee Set party should we achieve the never before achieved – and take the title!

Tee off at Jagorawi will be rather earlier at 9:30 as (almost) ever in a shotgun start for the Inter-league team and with green fees of 1,050,00 roops all in. There is also a 50K payment to the Interleague to cover the prize-winning event and b-b-q in November.

Sign up here to join in the fun of either event and, if you are available for selection for the Interleague team, then please indicate this  in the comment section of the form. Those selected to play Interleague will be advised by Captain Ric later in the week.

See ya on Sunday! …. Tee Set

PS and the caddies weren’t too shabby either, sorry about the book ends though 🙂
