Matt Harter RIP

A terribly sad message received yesterday from Peter Harter, Matt’s Brother.

Matt was a tremendous supporter of golf here in Jakarta, and a great friend to Tee Set and very, very many Tee Setters.

Dear Friends,  Matthew passed away early this morning.  He was very peaceful and seemed in no pain.  It just seemed to be time.

He and I made the journey from Singapore to Colorado on Nov. 21.   Matthew seemed to handle it well, but it was a long, draining trip as you all know.  We had very good medical assistance throughout the trip and could not have asked for better care.

I have lost my collection of business cards that we tried to collect, so I know I have not included a lot of dear friends in sharing this difficult news.  I apologize.  Please share with those that I have left off.

Throughout these past 9 months, it became very obvious why Matthew loved his work and play in SE Asia–it was you, his friends.

Thank you for the love, the care, and the concern you poured out to him and for sharing in his life.  We got to see that first-hand and we will never forget it.  On behalf of our family, we are forever grateful.

May God bless you all.  Pete Harter

  1. May Matt finally rest in peace. A great humble guy and always a gentleman, he will not be forgotten.

What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.

Matt will be sorely missed. A giant of a man with a heart to match. He was a past president of Tee- Set, and Bali-Classic and Interleague committee member. Anything to do with golf in Jakarta, Matt had a hand in making it a success someway. We will miss his booming voice during auctions, his quick wit, great sense of humour and fierce loyalty to his friends. As John said, a truly humble gentle giant. He will not be forgotten but will be sorely missed.

Always admired Matt’s tireless efforts on the golf scene during my T Set and Bali Classic days during my 2001/2007 stint in Jakarta. A big man in every way and I’m very sad to hear the news. Condolences to his family and his many friends from Phil and Juliette Mckean in London. God bless.
