Next up: Genung Geulis, Sunday 4th August

Bogor - Gunung Geulis West 3

This deceptively friendly looking par 3 on the West course should in fact have a skull and crossbones on the tee box with the stark message “BEWARE OF THE GREEN”

Even playing badly is not so terrible when the surroundings are like those to be found at that delightful mountain course in the Puncak area, Gunung Geulis, which we visit on Sunday for the third time this year. Still not clear if we are on the East or West course but it hardly matters as they as good as each other – and doubtless they will let us know before we tee off.

Ramadan should also be helping with the traffic which is expected to be relatively light on the way there on Sunday morning, but you might be best coming over the mountain to Rainbow Hills and thence Sentul on the way back. A map may help.

Normally we like to provide a link to the course we are playing, however, we have given it a miss this week as Google provides the following warning

The Website Ahead Contains Malware!
Google Chrome has blocked access to http://www.gununggeulis.com for now.
Even if you have visited this website safely in the past, visiting it now is very likely to infect your computer with malware.

Tee Time is 12:00 (and NOT 11:30 as previously advised) from both tee boxes with fees of just 588,000 roops including shared cart, more than 100,000 less than usual due to some sensible Ramadan pricing. Every chance of getting away early so you are strongly advised not to cut it fine this week unless  you actually enjoy playing on your own.

Please let us know if you intend joining the fun on Sunday by providing a few details at “Yes, I’m playing“.

See yah, Sunday! … Tee Set

Matoa Monthly Medal, Sunday 28th July

ClubhouseThe Day

Geoff putting lessonFor some, the day of the Monthly Medal was to start a little earlier than is your average Tee Setter’s preference with the putting clinic by coach Mike Shelton requiring the rather ungodly starting time of 9:30.

No worries, however, as all 10 who had signed on the dotted line were to show up – and more or less on time. Hell of a lot to cover in an hour including a whole bunch a new terms, however, we suspect that everyone picked up a solid tip or two – and Mike has promised to provide some reading material to reinforce what was covered in the day.

In a few weeks we intend having another 1 hour clinic, this one covering chipping.

With immaculate timing and, as is becoming something of a tradition, Mike Garwood then provided his excellent Chilli Beans for all so as to see off any lingering Saturday night induced languor.

Chilli Beans

Congratulations to Sam Westen for setting a new lateness record for website registration at 02:33 on the morning of the Medal – some 8 hours and 27 minutes before tee off!!

Amazingly, Sam’s record was not to stand for long as at 06:51 Mustapha sent in his own registration – and asking for car pooling!! No comment.

Reinforcements arrivingWe have been using Matoa as our Home Course for more than nine months now and it is pleasing to see that they are getting used to our ways and anticipating our needs, with this chap spotted ensuring sufficient supplies of Bintang are on hand to meet the needs of thirsty Tee Setters at the 19th hole being just the latest example.

With the President of Everything being on a UK Tour watching his homeland having its butt kicked by the Poms in a variety of sports, immediate past President Geoff Thwaites stepped into the breech to ensure that appropriately abusive words were said and prizes awarded, so many thanks to him.

The Play

Prize Awards

With 42 putts, hugely over par and losing his matchplay, Ben Kidd had a pretty rough old Sunday at Rainbow Hill last week and was the first to sign up for today’s putting clinic! Must all have been good for his soul as he stormed back to form with a 7 under par net 65 and 41 Stableford points to win the July Monthly Medal from perennial bridesmaid, Chris Murchison, and Norman Bunter, both with 40 points..

Happ Medal Winner

A fine off the stick 77 from Joseph Peries took low gross.

In a clear demonstration that the 1st hole needs a few more bunkers or something, all of Joseph, Graham McGeady and Norman Bunter birdied the thing to share 1st Birdie while Chris Murchison took a little consolation with the only sandy of the day to take 1st Sandy.

A happy Mike WebbWith only two skirts on the day, the absent Treasurer aka the President of Everything, will be delighted to see that THREE players managed to share Most Strokes with 10 – including Mike Garwood who was to shoot a remarkable 43 on the front 9 including this blemish!

While Mike Webb took one of those skirts, he was to shoot 71 net and was delighted to be on the receiving end of a 100,000 note as you will see in this photo of him sans skirt for once!

Full, player by player results, can be found here.

Next Week

We are back to the delightful mountain scenery of Gunung Geulis next week, when we have an 11:30 tee off from both boxes. With relatively light Ramadan traffic promised this should be less of a challenge than usual.

Green Fees are expected to be around 700,000 roops including shared cart which we will confirm later in the week, however, sign up now as usual at “Yes, I’m Playing!” if you intend taking the pleasure.

See yah Sunday, Tee Set

Matoa Medal Card

Another chance at glory for all Tee Setters on Sunday with our regular end of month visit to Matoa Nasional and the Medal event.

To add to that glory, there is also a plate of Slaneys Meat valued at 500,000 roops for the winner – the perfect thing for your next Iftar!

Green fees etc. of 650,000 roops including shared cart – or 540,000 if you want to stretch your legs on this relatively walking friendly course. Let us know if you are playing by filling in “Yes, I’m playing!

Handicaps for Matoa are here. The round will start at 11:00 and off tee boxes 1 and 10 as usual.

A great chance also to improve your putting as coach Michael Shelton will be conducting an hour-long clinic before the round, starting at 9:30. Still a few places available so if you haven’t booked already then get to it by filling this form in now.

Jagorawi and Rainbow Hills

The Day

Now well into the annual leave season and its effects were clearly felt with just 21 Tee Setters exercising their swings today, split over Interleague at Jagorawi and the troops at Rainbow Hills.

InterleagueAt Jags, Tee Set were looking to maintain their improved form and results of late as they took on bottom of the table Jakarta Loose Impediments in the Interleague at Jagorawi, however, things were not to go as planned as the match ended all square at 5 points apiece.

Observation from the Acting President of everything, captaining the side again, “Jakarta Loose Impediments had a strong team that included a 4 handicapper ringer on loan from Sandbaggers!”

Rainbow Hills’ own website rather immodestly, and in appalling English. describes the course as Indonesia’s finest and, while that is debatable, there is no denying it is a very high class course from clubhouse to fairways to greens – and with stunning mountain scenery thrown in for free (not! – ED).

Brilliant weather at the start with blue skies but with this dry season proving quite unworthy of its name, it was not so long before nasty looking black stuff was appearing from the north and threatening to spoil everyone’s day.

Remarkably those who went off tee box 1, and who were past the turn by this stage, experienced the miracle of being in a quiet oasis in the middle of darkness – and finished the round barely touched by the rains, while one group who started from 10 called it a day with lightning threatening and the sirens from what appeared to be Gunung Geulis blasting out its shrill warning.

Next up: Rainbow Hill, Sunday 21st July

clubhouseRoyale Jakarta is of course a rather tough act to follow but we believe that no one will be disappointed with the delightful, visually stunning and well maintained Rainbow Hill course next Sunday. Once again, we can thank Wina and Ramadan for the opportunity to play a very fine track; if we have ever played it before then maybe a Tee Set “old-timer” can share with us when that was.

Tee time at Rainbow Hill will be 11:45 after paying dues of 725,000 roops including shared cart. Handicaps can be found here, blue tees, red tees.

As ever, please confirm your intention to play by registering at “Yes, I’m playing!”

The Interleague team will of course be playing at Jagrawi where Captain Wymer has announced the following rather strong squad to take on Jakarta Loose Impediments.

Singles

Mike Garwood (10)

Sam Westen (3)

Doubles

Tim Davies (9), Justin McPhillips (4)

Geoff Thwaites (16), Chris Murchison (12)

Royale Jakarta, Sunday 14th July

happy campersThe Day

Two reasons for our presence at this fine course today, the first being Wina who arranged the booking rather late in the day and on pretty advantageous terms, the second being Ramadan, when the challenge of playing golf for four or five hours in hot sunshine while fasting is a bridge too far for many of the local golfers. Tee Set’s ability to deliver 30-40 golfers at this time of year can make us an attractive proposition even for the very best of courses.

That said,  Tee Set week 33 at the famous Royale Jakarta course was in fact planned more than 5 months ago, however, in the lead up to the event, an “unexpected” snafu struck with the course management deciding that the quoted rate was too cheap and unilaterally cancelled our booking.

Not wanting to disappoint the troops, another very attractive venue was chosen. As is the tradition during fasting month, the out of town venue of Lido Lakes was booked since it was expected the traffic would be light. Ongoing road works creating massive traffic jams snookered this plan at the midnight hour however. It was then that master negotiator Wina stepped in to lobby the Royale Jakarta management one more time to achieve a compromise between price and player numbers. So the circle was finally squared and 35 players came out of the woodwork to sign up and play. A relatively happy ending; many thanks, Wina.

Amongst the welcome back players on a great day of golf were Dan Brod who returned to Jakarta from KL especially for the event, Manoj Mishra who managed to fob his kids off to the wife for the day, and Eric Milfors coming out to play his annual Tee Set event; great to see them all

New players to welcome were Graeme and Susanty Bruce, Mike Crumin, and Colin Mortimer. Graeme, Susanty and Mike found themselves at the wrong end of some of the awards but all vowed to return soon to prove the golfing gods are not always against them.

Next up: Royale Jakarta, Sunday 14th July

RoyaleArguably Jakarta’s finest golf course, Royale Jakarta, really is something special and will surely prove an interesting challenge to all Tee Setters joining in on Sunday.

For those who were worried whether or not they would get to play Sunday, we can tell you that after a little persuasion, the course management have agreed to an increase to our numbers, allowing us to say that all who have booked so far, and the usual last-minute Larrys, will play.

Green Fees of 825,000 roops and a tee time of 11:52 are the price of  Tee Set’s first ever visit to the home of the Indonesian Open, won by a certain Yorkshireman not once but twice in recent years. Let’s see if our own Yorkshiremen are up to the task, off the blue tees at least!

The Tee Set Interleague team are still bouncing around after their fine win over the favourites a few weeks ago and this, the Interleague match report, is unlikely to bring them down off the cloud they are on. .

See yah Sunday, don’t be late!! … Tee Set

Padang Golf Modern

The day

Just 18 Tee Setters showed up at PGM, so we guess the late tee time combined with a challenging ride back was not so attractive to a lot of Tee Setters.

Ironically, we got off a few minutes earlier than the scheduled 12:50, and were to find a course in tip-top shape and the weather “Jakarta best”. Slightly slow round but bearable. While we hate the late start and the late drive home, the last 6 holes in the late afternoon cool and fading light were a great pleasure.

One newcomer to report, Leona Jelinkova, enjoy your play with us, Leona, just remember that in future you will usually have to get up earlier for your Tee Set rounds!

5 Welcome backs, most notably that of Steve Wood who was to rather enjoy his day’s play as you will discover.

The play

PGM -Detail

75 off the stick was Steve Woods reward on his return to Teeset to take Low Gross,  highlighted by that rare bird, the eagle, on hole 4 where he holed out from 90 metres, slam dunk straight in the hole – and a mind-boggling 22 putts – and the only sandy of the day to take a near clean sweep of the main honours. Unfortunately his lift, our Pawang Hujan, was in a hurry to get home to watch his first love, Geelong, in a replay and Steve was OB when the money was given out. Thanks for the donations Steve, you have made the acting President of Everything very happy.

The Treasurer’s grin broadened with a rare skirt from Jan Janda, the only one of the day, and Monster Putter from Wina who made money overall with a fine 2 metres or so to take Closest to the Pin.

George Bevege caught the Handicap Committee’s eye by winning Low Nett for the second week in a row. We can assure you George that no one wins it 3 weeks in a row.

Overall, another day of low scores with many chip-ins helping! Of the 18 rounds played, 6 were under 90 off  the stick and 7 Tee Setters shot better than handicap.

Full, player by player, results can be found here.

Next up

Royale 2Something of a special treat for Tee Setters next week in the shape of the newest and certainly one of the very best courses around, Royale Jakarta, where, despite a late-ish start of 11:52, we will be paying a premium 850,000 roops in green fees etc including cart. Anyone who has played the course will tell you that it’s well worth its premium and the writer is particularly sad to be missing  the occasion due to bucket and spade duties in Phuket. Many thanks to Wina for organising this one.

Places for Royale Jakarta are likely to be restricted to just 32 and we already have a lot of bookings, so get onto “Yes. I’m playing!” as soon as possible in order to avoid disappointment as they say.

Royale 1

See yah at Royale!!! … Tee Set

PS The British Open (The Open) is coming in a couple of weeks and Everest Bar in Blok M is putting on an “Open Evening” dedicated to the last day’s play at Muirfield which may have attractions for some Tee Setters – have a look at the details here.

Next Up: Padang Golf Modern, Sunday 7th July

modernNext up

Sunday sees us at the lovely Padang Golf Modern where we have a late tee time of 12:52 and green fees etc of  650,000 roops including cart.

We were booked some time ago at 11:00, however, they “lost’ the booking and tried to charge us 850,000 for rebooking with the later start. We were unable to recover the earlier tee time but they relented on the green fees after being shown some earlier correspondence.

You will find handicaps for Modern here.

If you haven’t already then don’t forget to let us know if you plan on coming on Sunday.

The limited places available for the following week at the very special Royale Jakarta on Sunday 14th July are going fast, so if you have not yet booked then make sure of a seat now by making another trip to “Yes, I’m playing!”

2013 Tee Set Matchplay

A few new match results so please find the latest update here. As usual we are running behind so do get those matches played as soon as possible. Any missing or erroneous results then please advise Jesse Baker.

Tee Set in the press

There is a new kid on the golf magazine blok – and produced by the same outfit that puts out the Jakarta Expat – and in a similar format.

A nice little read we have to say and the latest edition includes a long piece written by the acting Tee Set President of everything. They tell me they have a print run of some 15,000 copies for every edition as well as an online presence, so we might expect to see a few more new faces in the near future!

Can’t link to the page directly however you will find the issue here, but will then have to use the late Douglas Engelbart’s finest invention to get to page 10 wherein Ric’s pearls of wisdom can be found.

See yah Sunday! …. Tee Set

PS Happy Independence Day to our many Tee Setters hailing from the USA!

Matoa Monthly Medal, Sunday 30th June

The Day

A splendid day of golf at a sun kissed Matoa with breeze and a little cloud cover later on providing sublime conditions for golf.

39 Tee Setters found a course in fine condition overall with the greens pretty fast and true but with a few fairways already showing signs of browning which, given the rain we continue to get, is a little worrying for if we ever find ourselves in the dry season proper. Play was a little slow for later starters at around 5 hours, the result of the usual insertion of a few groups when we weren’t looking.

After an absence of some weeks, back on the keyboard and keeping us all straight was secretary Tuti, sporting what looked suspiciously like a Bali tan. Welcome back Tuti.

John Suermondt would like to express his sincere thanks to whoever left their mini-Esky behind at the Matoa clubhouse. With the clubhouse having run out of ice by the end, John was able to take advantage of the ice remaining in the Esky to make his longer than usual journey back to the Beltway in heavy pre-Ramadan traffic rather more pleasurable than would otherwise have been the case. Let John know if you would like to receive his personal thanks – and your Esky back.

While we are on the subject of John Suermondt, the winner of the Monthly Medal, George Bevege, also benefited from a slab of Bintang courtesy of John’s company, Harrison Assessments Indonesia. Many thanks, John. In a development that could only happen in Indonesia, George managed to swap the 24 room temperature cans of Bintang with the club for almost as many cold ones; reports have it that the slab was put to bed with a lot of help from the boys on the way home.  Maybe you should have George Beverage on that new shirt, George!

One new Tee Setter on the day, so a big Tee Set welcome to Ray Powell, enjoy your golf with us, Ray.

10 Welcome Backs, none more special than that of the great man himself, Mr Ivan Byriel, back right where he should be on a Sunday, playing golf with Teeset.

As usual you will find a number of photos of the day below, however, they and rather more can be found here in a high quality format.

The Play

George

Here’s your Bintangs, sir

The fine conditions led to some great golf being played with 7 gross scores under 85, and 14 under 90 – must be some sort of record.

Star of the show was of course Monthly Medal winner George Bevage with a sparkling net 6 under 66 to win the slab of Bintang from Harrison Assessments and bragging rights for a month! George also shared Low Putts at 27 with Mel Meeds and Peter Reichlmeier.

sam

Sam “loadsamoney” Westen

Sam Westen was only a little behind, shooting a 1 over par off the stick to win Low Gross AND taking long drive with an enormous 270 metres. It appears that Joseph Peries is no longer a shoo-in for Low Gross and we await his return – and the clash of the Titans.

Bad week for the absent Treasurer as there were NO reported Skirts for once – and stand in MC Peter Reichlmeier quickly abandoned all pretence at financial prudence by ignoring almost all the award rules – well done Peter!!

Only Mark Kilner’s 16 on one hole with the benefit of 5 (five) OBs apparently – and a rather low 39 putts to take Monster Putter by Johannes Pesch – were to provide any income on the day. When asked how on earth he had managed 16 on one hole, 15 handicapper Mark replied “I had a really good 1 putt!”.

Jackie

Long drive, Ladies winner, Jackie Craig

Two matchplays decided today with Thurmond Borden chipping in from off the green on the 18th to pip Graham McGeady 1 up, while Peter R and Craig Binks, the pair of them having barely survived a huge argument the night before with one Jack Daniels, fought out a tough match, with Peter’s putter (and a really rather reasonable handicap) being the difference in the end in a 3 and 2.

The Results

Matoa Awards

Detailed, player by player, results can be found here.

30th Anniversary

Shirt sizesTee Set is looking for any old photos of its activities for  the Anniversary. Currently, and with just one exception, we have nothing older than 2009 for heaven’s sake! If you have any then let us have ’em, and not just electronic versions – we are very happy to scan if needed.

We ended up with firm orders for 86 30th Anniversary shirts and the order has now gone in for these plus another 24 un-monogrammed ones for sale on the day itself and as a small reserve for new Tee Set members to purchase. European shirt sizes of course and you might be interested in the overall Tee Set size distribution for the 86 orders which was as you see opposite.

While the number includes some players ordering two of the shirts, and some people who are overseas and clearly not attending, it does seem to indicate that attendance might be rather higher than has been our planning number of 50 for the event at Matoa on the 1st September.  To give us a better handle on numbers for the event therefore, we should be grateful if you would complete the following extremely undemanding form if you have a 90% plus probability of attending.

Next Week

An early return to the splendid Padang Golf Modern course out on Jakarta’s western flatlands next week, with green fees etc of 650,000 roops including cart. A later start than was originally agreed with the course management  at 12:52. Useless buggers. We hope to get off early from tee boxes 1 & 10.

The week after, on Sunday 14th July, we take on the might of  Royale Jakarta, home to Indonesia’s premiere event, the Jakarta Open and a top class course. Places are limited to just 32 so you might consider booking your place as soon as possible. A little pricier than usual at 850,00- roops but in this case you get what you pay for, including the finest turf in Jakarta.

As usual make your booking for one or other – or both – at “Yes, I’m playing!

See yah there! …. Tee Set
