Pondok Cabe, Sunday 2nd June 2013

The Day

Decent course, great price, walk if you want to, cheap beer, great Soto Ayam and good service – and they even have a few lady caddies these days, so what’s not to like about Pondok Cabe?

Classic description from our web master who by the way was a no-show (due to a surfeit of celebration after captaining his team to the Jakarta Pool League title).

So, what is not to like….. well the traffic going down Cirendeu Raya was bumper to bumper so that was no fun! Best advice for getting to Pondok Cabe these days is take the old Ciputat Raya road (old Bogor road) and take a left into Cabe Raya which brings you to the course access road at the end of the airport runway. On the cheap beer front, large bottle of Bintang Rp45K…great, small can of Bintang Rp40K…not so great but we were quick learners.

Graham low nettSunday was Graham Stallworthy’s last game with Tee Set before returning to Oz. Since first joining in September last year, Graham has been one of our true regulars and was a solid performer in the Interleague comp.

It’s been great having you Graham and we wish you every success in your future endeavors. Davis, Jeff, Andrew and Scott all up from Oz just for the week to join Graham’s farewell were our new players as were John Lennon and Richard Large. So with 25 regulars, 11 welcome backers and 6 new players it was a great turn out with 42 Tee Setter old and new.

Some interesting scores and match play results. Ric Wymer beat Graham Barker 7 & 6, Koen Verhayen beat Evaldo Roos 5 and 3, Nori Puzey beat James Ross one up. Nine players shot their handicap or under with immediate past president Ric Wymer approaching disqualification territory after coming in 9 under his handicap while Koen was not that far off suffering the same fate with 7 under.

The course was really playing friendly by the way.

Quality golfers can now be found within the group as proved by Andrew Hansen’s gross 76 and Sam Westen’s 80. Closest to the pin was Deddy Baktyo who showed all the low handicappers how it’s done. Longest drive went to Mel Meeds who managed to get plenty of ‘bat’ on the ball like many on the day, but still managed to keep it on the fairway. Mel left early without collecting his prize and then sat in traffic for a couple of hours while the rest of us enjoyed the complementary beer put on for Graham’s farewell. Also missing out on the beer was birthday boy, Jeff Moy, although he was happily occupied elsewhere.

Next Up: Pondok Cabe, Sunday 2nd June

pcDecent course, great price, walk if you want to, cheap beer, great Soto Ayam and good service – and they even have a few lady caddies these days, so what’s not to like about Pondok Cabe?

Tee off from teeboxes 1 and 10 will be at 11:34 (or a little earlier, hopefully) having paid your green fees etc of 400,000 roops if you share a cart – or 325,000 if you enjoy the walk.

If you plan on playing then, as usual, please fill in the details on the “Yes, I’m playing” page.

Finally, Harold Heyne lives in the Cibubur area and is looking for a lift to Pondok Cabe on Sunday. If you can help then please drop him an e-mail.

Hope to see ya Sunday! …. Tee Set

PS Please note that in two week time, 16th June – Interleague Sunday, Tee Setters will have an alternative as usual, this time the very pretty Permata Sentul course, a course with the cutest caddies in town, allegedly. Green Fees of 660,00 roops including shared cart – and a 12:30 start, though we expect to get away earlier, so get there in good time. Already possible to register for this one here.

Matoa Monthly Medal, Sunday 26th May

The Day

Last week’s newsletter had a request from the President for players to be at the course at least an hour before the advertised tee time, giving you the chance to socialise with your mates – and giving us plenty of time to organise the groupings and indeed allow us to get off early in the not infrequent event of a quiet course. Those taking heed of this advice this week were to save themselves a very frustrating 40 minutes or so negotiating the jammed traffic only 2km from the course.

Yes, the local Ciganjur community decided to put on a religious event, closing half the road with the result that players arrived late and in drips and drabs – and made the flight match ups a nightmare. Last to arrive was secretary Tuti who received a wild round of applause as players finally made their way out to the tee boxes. There was more than one reason for the applause – but you had to have been there to know why 🙂

New players were George Bevege and Taimur. Welcome, and enjoy your golf with us, guys.

Welcome back players were 21 in total but special mention for Malcolm McDonald and Steve Wood who haven’t played Tee Set for about 3 years. Nevertheless they still wanted to use their old recorded handicaps – but Tuti was wide awake to that ploy.

Two match plays were determined with Geary Bowles winning 2 and 1 over James Young while Peter Reichlmeier had a 3 and 2 victor over a hurt Chris Smith. Congratulations to Peter who shot a sparkling 40 on the back nine which included a net eagle on the index 1 hole. Not bad for a 22 handicapper, and we’ll get back to Peter later in the news.

Peter Bush hit longest drive on the only fairway he hit all day. 236m right between the bunkers. Closest to the pin was Justin McPhillips at a distance of 4m. Skirts were hard to find with only Sofree Abdul and Paul Collier owning up. The only other standard awards were first birdie and sandy par which went to Bruce Hector and Evaldo Roos respectively.

Although low gross is not an award we make on Monthly Medal Sundays, special mention for Sam Westen who shot the lowest round of the day with 76 – might just be his best ever round on Indonesian courses to date. Not a record likely to last too long in the view of those who have seen Sam hit a ball.

May Medal winnerIn the main event, runner-up with an excellent 40 Stableford points was the in form Mad Dog Geoff Thompson, though pride of place went to Peter Reichlmeier who is this month’s medal winner with 41 points – and takes home the Slaney Butchery meat voucher.

Well done Peter, but credit must also go to Brenden Green for finally getting him fitted out with clubs that work.

Geoff's Leader BoardAs promised, we finally got our act together on the Medal Winners plaque – and it is pictured here with Ric Wymer. As you will see, every expense has been spared -but fear not as a proper job bearing testimony to the skills and effort of our medal winners is in the works.

Tee Setter news

Sad to report that Graham Stallworthy will shortly leave us to return to Australia so, happy trails mate, we’ve enjoyed your company.

On a brighter note, Tee Set congratulations to Steve Wood on the new addition to his family!

Next Sunday

Sunday sees our return to Pondok Cabe after an absence of 10 weeks – some intensive trials in the interregnum confirm that the improvement in the course that has been seen over the past couple of years continues – and it is now a very decent piece of turf and, as always, with relatively Tee Set friendly fairways, ie wide and with a significant number of opportunities to use the parallel fairway:-)

Tee off  was originally planned for a rather un-Tee Set like time of 07:30, however, they now tell us that they have only two flights available for us then, so we are now moved back to a far more sociable 11:34.

With green fees etc, including cart, set at an attractive Rp. 400,000 or Rp. 325,000 if you fancy the relatively unchallenging walk. What with that, Tee Set friendly beer prices and the best golf course Soto Ayam in town, a great day is in prospect. Please register at “Yes, I’m Playing” as usual.

See ya all on Sunday, cheers, Tee Set

Next Up: Matoa Monthly Medal

???????????????????????????????

April winner Noemi Roos

Yes, it’s that time of the month again and we are off to Matoa for our third monthly medal on Sunday.

Green fees etc at Matoa will be Rp. 650,000 all in – or 540,000 walking, and with a start from tee boxes 1 and 10 at around 11:00

Up to date handicaps will not be available until the day itself 😦

As always, please confirm if you intend joining in the fun by registering at “Yes, I’m playing!!

Early notice that there have been a couple of changes to the schedule in July with the Tee Set 30th birthday party now planned for Lido Lakes on SATURDAY 13th July when there will be a whole bunch of fun stuff after the round, not least doubled up (or more) prizes, a special event shirt and much more besides.

Lido Lakes is of course a stunning course and up with the best but suffers from its distant location, however, with our visit very carefully planned for the second week of Ramadan, traffic will be light. Keep an eye out for full details next week.

See ya Sunday!! … Tee Set

Jagorawi and Pangkalan Jati, Sunday 19th May

The usual Interleague Sunday split of course and the Interleague team did a fine job against a strong team in Mad Dogs while there were a very happy 24 Tee Setters enjoying the sun and improved conditions at Pangkalan Jati!

JAGORAWI – Interleague

After the Kadin tournament, which occupied the entire Jags course for the morning, the Interleague went out for a shotgun start at 12:45 using all 18 tee boxes.

Confusion to start with since not all team players were cascaded the information that tee boxes had been changed. Confusion aside it meant we had the course to ourselves and very few hold ups so a 4 hour round was the norm. This type of play suits Tee Set who are always better when the game flows like Bintang during happy hour for some reason

IL Results v Mad DogsNice work by the team captain to get the match ups almost 100% spot on with 4 wins out of a possible 5 against the highly rated Mad Dogs team.

The only loser on the day was Wina who was trumped by Yuli; hardly surprising as the latter shot 6 below her handicap with an amazing 76 off the stick.

New recruit Sam Westen won the battle of the sexes by taking his singles match against Yanti Brauti 5 and 4. Lucky for him as otherwise he would never have heard the end of it.

Doubles teams Ric/Mel and Peter/Geoff both won their games 3 and 2, and this despite some nervousness closing out the matches. while Evaldo and Richard finally produced the form we’ve seen during normal Tee Set events and breezed home with a 5 and 4 win.

Peter Reichlmeier was also very happy with longest drive for B player after having only taken the bubble wrap off his new clubs the day before.

Well done to course manager Edwin who pulled the rabbit out of the hat by getting all games completed before dark. Thanks also to the Interleague Committee for another highly successful match play event.

Pangkalan Jati

24 Tee Setters showed at PJ to check out our Pawang Hujan’s assertion that Tee Sets former headquarters was much improved since days of yore, and discovered that he did not speak with forked tongue, the transformation is stark as excluding carts from fairways has had a remarkable effect though, as one who has circumnavigated the course with a buggy axle deep in mud on a number of occasions, it is not difficult to see why.

Our return was blessed with fine if rather hot weather and also, at least if you started on tee box 10, a reasonable 4 1/2 hour round. Those starting on 1 had a less fluent day, though still taking a less than end of days 5 hours.

With the Vice President of everything failing to get the Tee Set computer and all the other paraphernalia into the hands of our secretary in time, your web master’s laptop was brought into service but its cutting edge installation of Windows 8 and Office 2013 proved too much for James Ross’s macros and Active-X controls and, to cut a long story short, we were forced to revert to the excellent manual back up system we have in place for just such contingencies.

Manual worked just fine and remarkably quickly, though Tutu will have to type all the stuff in at the office later. This together with the absence of our loquacious President giving battle at Jagorawi meant that we were all done and dusted and the writer home before dark despite an 11:00 start. Truly a first.

Results

Couple of 84s off  the stick saw Graham Stallworthy and Chris Murchison sharing low gross honours while “Simon Q” took full advantage of a 30 handicap to come in with a 66 for the Low Net award.

The Craig family had a happy day with Jackie taking Low Putts with 29 while Don found some form with a net 69.

No skirt available for our traditional skirts photo unfortunately; our VP promises to do better next time;

Aussie Embassy Charity Golf Day

The Embassy’s social club is clearly a bit better organised than most and gives you plenty of notice of their Charity Golf Day on 29th August – you can read all about it here.

Next Sunday

Next Sunday is the last Sunday of the month of course which means a return to Matoa for the Monthly Medal and a chance of glory once again, not to mention one of those elusive half million roop meat vouchers and a place on the Monthly Medal Winners shield which will be proudly displayed on the wall at our Matoa head quarters; just as soon as your President gets around to it.

If you are joining in the Medal then let us know here as usual.

Hope to see ya next Sunday! .. Tee Set

Next up: Jagorawi or Pangkalan Jati

On Sunday next, Tee Setters have an opportunity to join the Interleague team who are playing at Jagorawi where green fees, Interleague fees etc including shared cart will be a modestly discounted Rp. 950,000 in compensation for the later than usual start time of 13:30.

pjAs ever on an Interleague Sunday, we offer an alternative venue and this time it is a return to Pangkalan Jati where we will start from tee boxes 1 and 10 at 11:30 after the payment of green fees of Rp. 490,00 all in – or Rp 395,000 if you choose to walk this relatively flat course

We sent our Pawang Hujan along to Pangkalan Jati yesterday for a “dry run” (sic) and he reports that the improvements in playing conditions we saw there on our last visit in late March have continued apace and that the fairways are now “excellent” and the greens true if a little slow, probably due to their being overdue a haircut.

Part of the price for the improving conditions is undoubtedly down to carts no longer being given roving rights over the entire course as was previous policy. You win some, you lose some.

As ever, please register here if you intend playing at either location on Sunday; remembering to select the correct course option, please!!

Hope to see you at one or the other on Sunday …. Tee Set

Padang Golf Modern, Sunday 12th May

The day

Padang Golf Modern

.. and the course ain’t half bad too …

Padang Golf Modern, while on the unfavoured western side of Jakarta, has easy access from the toll roads and, even coming from the south through BSD on Sunday, the trip was still only around 45 minutes from Kemang. Given that and what is written below, it seems we should make an effort to become more regular visitors than in the past.

The management put on a great day for the 34 Tee Setters making the trip and who were to be rewarded with a nearly empty course.

The cooperative starter got us off early from tee boxes 1 and 10 and most groups finished in 4 hours with the one exception being due to waiting for what turned into a no-show.

We most sincerely thank the management and staff of Modern for their support, generosity and especially warm  welcome. Having the player numbers we now attract seems to have brought more focus to their attention – a not unwelcome development!

This jewel of a course was as good as it gets and, as a bonus, the weather was pleasant. Our very own Pawang Hujan was seen performing strange dance like gyrations accompanied by loud expletives on several occasions, which we assume is part of his ritual to keep the rain away. Or shank induced.

Once again we attracted new members with Sofre Abdul, Jess Kindler and Peter Bush joining for the first time; welome to them all. Peter was a bit nervous and flirted with a skirt on the first three holes played before finding his rhythm on the 4th hole to take longest drive on his very first outing with Tee Set.

Joseph Peries headlined as so often, this time with a low gross of just three over par, while the Ladies recent good run continued with a low net 69 for Wina Nugraha – well done both.

Welcome back to Christian Molav who we haven’t seen since the Championship in November 2012 and  also to the Craigs who have also been absent for far too long. Jackie celebrated with a very solid 46 on the back nine while we suspect that Don will have been pretty pleased by his performance too.

Reka Romango gets a mention for taking 18 (EIGHTEEN) on a single hole. We believe it was largely due to taking 10 to get out of a very unfriendly bomb crater of a bunker. Bad luck Reka, but on the bright side it did set you up for the most improved award with 11 strokes better on the back 9!!

We had 3 players taking only 24 putts which gives a fair indication of how small the greens are at Modern. Mike Webb and Jess Kindler will undoubtedly have felt hard done by in having to wear the monkey mask for returned a rather modest 38 putts.

Two under achievers also requiring a mention are Don Craig and Chris Smith who enhanced their skirt ratios; regretably unable to bring you the usual pictures of the proud skirt winners due to Vice-President “I left the camera at home” Wymer.

Gentle Reminder

Please try to arrive at the course at least one hour before the scheduled tee time. Some times we get lucky if the course is quiet, other times Mike Garwood brings his persuasive skills which means tee off can happen 30 minutes ahead of the schedule. Those coming right on advertised start time adds to the general last minute pairing panic and stress.

Pairings

It has been Tee Set policy for as long as can be remembered that pairings are random and at the sole discretion of the day’s captain in charge.  This promotes integration of new members and adds welcome variety to the groupings. Nevertheless the process is not random and consideration is given to husband/wife/ family teams, business visitors, match play games, level of handicap and speed of play etc.

Special requests will be accommodated as long as prior notification is given via the “I’m playing” registration on the web page where the “comments box” can be used for this function. The end result hopefully will be only minor last minute juggling of pairings and a less stressed out captain and secretary on the day. Numbers have swelled significantly this year and a little help from the troops in this matter makes life much easier for the organisers.

Ball Unplayable (Rule 28) – stuff we should know 😦

If your ball is in a water hazard and you do not wish to play it as it lies, you must proceed under the water hazard Rule – the unplayable ball Rule does not apply. Elsewhere on the course, if you believe your ball is unplayable, you may under penalty of one stroke play a ball from where your last shot was played, or drop a ball any distance behind the point where the ball lay keeping a straight line between the hole, the point where the ball lay and the spot on which the ball is dropped, or drop a ball within two club-lengths of where the ball lies not nearer the hole. If your ball is in a bunker you may proceed as above, except that if you are dropping back on a line or within two club-lengths, you must drop a ball in the bunker.

All clear now? … haha

Classifieds

Rather a disappointing response so far to Chazz Hassig’s recent attempted cellar clearing operation. You would be unwise to miss this stellar opportunity to acquire some top class gear at knockdown prices – and a little astuste tawar-menawar might even get the prices down a little more.

Get to it and make Mrs Hassig a happy lady.

Upcoming events

We have a new addition to the Upcoming Events page for you where a visit will give you some details of Tee Set’s Iron Man 3 event in September. An event guaranteed to be different in MANY ways and a whole bunch of fun.

Next Up

Interleague round 4 on Sunday next which means a choice of venue for those not involved in the league itself, viz Jagorawi, when tee off for the league matches will be rather later than usual at around 13:00 and for others about half an hour afterwards, when Green Fees etc including compulsory cart will be a modestly discounted Rp. 950,000 – or you could try Pangkalan Jati at a still civilised 11:30 tee off from 1 and 10 with Green Fees at Rp. 490,000 all in, or Rp. 395,000 if you would like to walk this relatively flat and pedestrian-friendly course.

As ever, please register your intention to play at the appropriate course (there are two options) by filling in a little data at the “Yes, I’m playing!!” page.

Wherever you play on Sunday, enjoy!!

Cheers, Geoff Thwaites

Next Up: Padang Golf Modern, Sunday 12th May

Padang Golf ModernModern is one of our less frequently played venues, however, it is a good class course that will provide a robust challenge for all Tee Setters next Sunday.

Tee off will be from 1 and 10 at 11:30 with green fees etc, including compulsory cart being an attractive Rp 650,000.

If you intend playing and have not already registered then pay a visit here so that we get a good idea of numbers.

Anyone needing car pooling is reminded to put a note to that effect in the comments field of the form when we will do our best to get you sorted; we haven’t left anyone behind yet.

The 2013 Tee Set Match Play is marching along nicely and Modern) would be a good place to get that outstanding match played – results to date and your next opponent can be found here.

Palm Hill, Sunday 5th May

Modern noticeIMPORTANT NOTICE

Despite what you might have heard if you played at Palm Hill on Sunday, next week’s round will be at Modern GC and NOT Gunung Geulis. Wonderful course Geulis, but too soon after our last visit.

THE DAY

Great day at Palm Hill which saw our third visit of the year – and an outstanding number of players with 46 Tee Setters showing up for what is a new Tee Set record for the course. The green fees of Rp 508,000, including cart and caddy, were relatively easy on the wallet which, together with Palm Hill being a Tee Set friendly course, surely contributed to the new record – including the largest number of newcomers we have ever seen on one day.

Welcome to all 8 newcomers, we hope to see you all again soon!

Early flights were able to get away on time at 11:30 from both 1st and 10th tee boxes after initial advice that there would be a 30 minute delay. The 30 minute delay proved to be correct for the later groups, however, as there were not enough carts to go around 😦

A few wise old hands such as immediate past President Wymer, aided and abetted by Od and Johannes, spent their time productively, however, chilling out in the club house with a cold Bintang  or two, while admiring the immaculate, form hugging, attire of some very cute waitresses.

Next Up: Palm Hill, Sunday 5th May

palmhillSunday sees us returning to the most pleasant environs of the Palm Hill club where Green Fees etc, including compulsory cart, will be an equally pleasant 508,000 Roops – and with a start from two teeboxes at 11:30.

The wet season appears to have a significant sting in the tail this year, as late afternoon and early evening yesterday was to prove, however,  we are arranging for our Pawang Hujan to return early from a business trip to India to ensure we are not overly troubled.

If you plan on playing then please fill in the “Yes, I’m playing” form.

Hope to see you there! … Tee Set
