Despite what you might have heard if you played at Palm Hill on Sunday, next week’s round will be at Modern GC and NOT Gunung Geulis. Wonderful course Geulis, but too soon after our last visit.
THE DAY
Great day at Palm Hill which saw our third visit of the year – and an outstanding number of players with 46 Tee Setters showing up for what is a new Tee Set record for the course. The green fees of Rp 508,000, including cart and caddy, were relatively easy on the wallet which, together with Palm Hill being a Tee Set friendly course, surely contributed to the new record – including the largest number of newcomers we have ever seen on one day.
Welcome to all 8 newcomers, we hope to see you all again soon!
Early flights were able to get away on time at 11:30 from both 1st and 10th tee boxes after initial advice that there would be a 30 minute delay. The 30 minute delay proved to be correct for the later groups, however, as there were not enough carts to go around 😦
A few wise old hands such as immediate past President Wymer, aided and abetted by Od and Johannes, spent their time productively, however, chilling out in the club house with a cold Bintang or two, while admiring the immaculate, form hugging, attire of some very cute waitresses.
The first groups came in after five hours while the last group staggered in just before dark. Some very handy scores to report with Joseph Peries shooting a 74 off the stick and Nuri Puzey piping Cucu for low net (68) on a count back. Ed Tarog found the greens to his liking, needing just 25 putts.
Longest drive went to new player Scott Whitmire who smashed his drive an incredible 296 metres while only two Tee Setters out of forty-six managed to hit the 5th green!! None of our single digit handicappers could manage it, so it came down to steady golfers Ric with 10m and Santi who took the money with her effort of 5m from the pin.
Due to the extended tee off, the Committee had a long wait to get all the score cards in and this wait proved to much for some of the group who had to leave before the conclusion of proceedings, however, most played on at the 19th hole – much to the delight of the club management, though sad to see the beer prices creeping past the Rp 40,000 mark, as is the case at most courses these days. Gouging could best be used to describe this unfortunate development.
The course was in particularly good condition with the greens running true, though one complaint was that the bunkers were not raked after being abused. As a result the rulebook was consulted and the following would have helped Mike Garwood out of a deep footmark. Rule 13-4. Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions
Exception 2 to Rule 13-4 is amended to permit a player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and Rule 13-2 is not breached.
PRIZE RESULTS
Full detailed scores by player can be seen here.
Though Palm Hill has a large number of positive qualities, it is clear that the Ladies hold considerable sway on the club committee with some startlingly advanced red teebox positions; something which was to bring about an especially rich crop of skirt fines for an unabashedly happy treasurer today.
As you will see below, the seven of the ten recipients of the coveted skirt consented were to be photographed, sans skirt due to an alarming, if not entirely unprecedented, lapse of memory by recently appointed vp, Ric Wymer.
Skirt winner and current President, Geoff Thwaites, was unfortunately engaged elsewhere on Ugandan issues but is probably good for his fine next week.
Robert Humberson asked that we point out that his ball only ended up behind the red teebox because it came back 50 metres off a tree further up the fairway. Happy to do so, Robert; bad day, eh, clearly late night poker and golf made unhappy bedfellows?!
MATCHPLAY
3 matches played at Palm Hill with top billing going to Joseph Peries and Billy McCarroll when Joseph was to find that even a gross 74 was unable to shake off Billy in a match that ended up all square – when they agreed that the right and proper way to settle it was to do it all again!! The other matches saw Matt Fairey triumph 3 and 2 over Mel Meeds while Wina Nugraha smashed Keith Miller 5 and 4.
Results and who plays who next in the Matchplay can be found here.
NEXT WEEK
As mentioned at the beginning, we are at Modern GC next week when Green Fees etc will be a relativeley modest Rp 650,000 for such a fine course, including compulsory cart. We will be teeing off from 1 and 10 at 11:30. Please register as usual at “Yes, I’m Playing!!” if you intend joining us.
Hope to see you there!!….. Geoff
PS The following week, Sunday 19th May, sees us return to Jagorawi for the Interleague third round when we will offering Pangkalanjati as an alternative.
