Message from the Committee: reminder

There has been much member communication recently regarding the COVID-19 virus and what impact that will have on Tee Set and golf arrangements generally. Whilst Tee Set has a proud history of never having missed a week-end’s golf in 37 years, the Committee takes the stance that it would rather lament the passing of this tradition than go down with ship…. We are therefore taking the situation week by week and will continue to arrange games providing the situation does not worsen dramatically and/or there is not a city wide shut down mandated by the government which therefore closes access to courses for all. Some points related to this:

  • There is sufficient information available publicly for each member and guest to be adequately informed on the risks associated with the virus and steps which can be taken to protect oneself. We expect each member to therefore form their own judgement as to whether it is appropriate, and they feel comfortable enough, to join each week;
  • We are talking to the management of the golf courses booked for the coming few weeks to ensure they have in place policies to check the status of their guests, staff and caddies as well to maintain an appropriate level of hygiene and cleanliness in both public and back of house areas. We may adjust our schedule if we are uncomfortable with the feedback we get so please rely on the blogs rather than the published schedule for the latest updates;
  • Key personal guidelines include maintain a safe personal distance from others and being thorough in regularly washing hands etc.. We expect individuals will follow these steps for themselves and ask you are also conscious to respect the boundaries for others you come into contact with – notably on the course, on carts and in the Club House before and after games;
  • We expect that any pronouncements on changes in government policy/rules will come at very short notice. It may be therefore affecting our schedule even if we have previously confirmed the game: please keep looking at the news to check since we may not be able to update the situation immediately to all members.

We will also continue to liaise with some of the other Societies here in Jakarta to be as coordinated as possible.

Regarding this Sunday at Cengkareng, the course remains open with procedures in place to check staff, caddies and guests as well as regular sanitation of public and back of house areas. The Committee have also received several requests from members wishing to still play noting the above comments already. We have therefore decided to continue with our booking but suspend the main competitions we would have otherwise run on the day so as to enable players who wish to depart early to do so and to keep appropriate social distancing after the round for those still wishing to partake in a refreshment.

If you wish to join, please sign up here. First tee time is midday as usual and the green fee will be  Rp.875,000.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng has available a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts

Sunday 22nd March 2020 Gading Raya

The Day

Undeterred by the heavy rains which were falling across Jakarta overnight and into the morning, 22 Tee Setters gathered, at a safe distance to each other, on Sunday morning at Gading Raya with their usual optimism. Although the rain continued right up until tee time, these keen players were to be rewarded with a cessation of the rain on the first tee box – rumored to be as a result of one of our number buying a new umbrella just before play started. We were to therefore enjoy a bright sunny game and with the course being quiet, we were also finished in very quick time, the first groups home in under 4 hours.

With the ground still drying out, we played lift, clean, place and despite the conditions making the course play longer than normal, many good scores were returned.

2 newcomers on the day and a warm welcome to Ian Pemberton and Philippe Jamin. Welcome backs to Aaron Davis after 97 weeks, Ken Runyon after 33 weeks and Karan Khetan after 11 weeks; all of whom featured in the prize-giving afterwards.

Thank you to VP Ric Wymer for managing the scoring and announcements with the able assistance of Mike Webb and to Divya Ahuja for assisting with the registrations in the morning. Pictures of the day can be found here.

The Play

In his own indomitable style, Timo Karonen secured a trifecta of awards balancing his now usual First Par for Handicaps >=30 with our sole skirt for the day and a share of Most Strokes with Aaron Davis. Aaron also joining Timo as a prize winner for his Most Improved return.

Divya Ahuja took First Sandy, Richard Mau Low Putts and Philippe Jamin First Birdie.

Low Gross on the day went to Jeff Landau and our Low Net winners were Ken Runyon, Karan Khetan and Alastair Livingston (on a count-back from Jari Antikainen).

Tee Set Match-Play

Sunday saw the rematch of last week’s tied game with Divya Ahuja edging out Ric Wymer 3&2 to progress. For those who have completed their games, please do not forget to report your results to James Ross by email and for those yet to play the first round games, please note the deadline for this round is 12th April. Check out the Match Play page for more information as needed.

Christopher Till R.I.P.: 9 May 1957 – 17 March 2020

As reported, we were sad to learn of the passing of Chris Till last week. Chris was a proud Scouser who left home to make his fortune, firstly in southern England and then, from the early 1990’s, Indonesia where he remained through thick and thin until he passed away. A keen musician, his band supported Queen when they visited Liverpool in the early 1970’s and he carried his passion for music through-out his travels; here in Jakarta he often sometimes be found doing impromptu jam sessions in Blok M or where-ever he may be out for the evening.

A quick, dry sense of humour, a generous heart and that scouser’s gift of the gab carried him through his ups and downs, in business and in life, and he was always ready to share a story over a beverage or 3. A part of his local legacy will be as the Founder of the Cilindak Rotary Club which has since raised a considerable amount of funds for local worthy causes.

Pictured here from one of his last Tee Set outings with his favourite wooden headed putter, Chris played with us from 2012 until his health curtailed his ability to enjoy being out on the course. Our commiserations to Maya, his family and friends and a thank you to Tim Supple for his contributions to this obituary.

Next Up: Cengkareng Monthly Medal and Eclectic XII. Sunday 29th March 2020 12pm tee off

On Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and certainly one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2020.

In addition to being the third Monthly Medal of 2020, this week will also be the 3rd round of Cycle XII of the Tee Set Eclectic.

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of the course’s deservedly famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us please sign up here.

Committee Message & Next Up…..

Message from the Committee

2 unrelated topics but both equally somber. Firstly, we were informed of the passing of Chris Till on 17th march 2020, a long term Jakarta resident and Tee Set member since 2012. An obituary on Chris will follow shortly and our commiserations to Maya and the rest of Chris’s family and friends.

Tee times off 1 & 10 at 11.32 a.m. have been confirmed along with the attractive pricing of Rp850,000 with carts. If you are able to join us please sign up here and we look forward to seeing all who can make it on Sunday.

Sunday 15th March 2020 Emeralda

The Day

Kudos and good fortune to Mel Cantarella who managed to just escape the travel lock down in Manila and arrive in good time on Sunday at CGK to make Tee Set’s return visit to Emeralda this week. Mel was joined by 29 other Tee Setters who were to enjoy relatively good weather until the last couple of holes for the final groups.

As usual we were well looked after by the Emeralda team who are keen to have us back although having had 3 consecutive week-ends at the same junction, we’ll take a rain check until later in the year. Overall the course was in good shape but with the rains still persisting and repair work ongoing in the putting surfaces, it was no surprise to find the greens still a little variable in speed, leading to some impressive returns in the competition for Monster Putter.

5 newcomers this week and a warm Tee Set welcome to Anthony Robertson, Heru, Henk Pouels, Kamhaeng Sihachan and Mark Pinnells – most of whom featured further in the prize giving. A warm welcome back too for Rob Cheng (83 weeks), Francois Panchaud (64) and John Dotch (35). We look forward to seeing all again soon.

Thank you to our VP’s Ric and Bill as well as Lis and Beby for managing the day and photos can be found here.

The Play

“Tee it High & Let it Fly” was the intent but a slightly shallow swing saw his ball soar off the top of the driver and his tee fly not much further, in any case neither a far as the red tees, leaving VP Bill Lloyd with that most precious of all our awards, a skirt. Bill was joined by a couple of his playing partners, newcomers Mark Pinnells and Anthony Robertson as well as the returning Francois Panchaud and Mel CantarellaMark completed the Tee Set trifecta with Monster Putter and Most Strokes, the latter for which he was joined by Anthony, Tapio Jarvenenpaa and another of our newcomers, Henk Pouels.

Most Improved went to Divya Ahuja whilst Jens Roestel took home First Birdie and Kamhaeng Sihachan Low Putts.

Our Low Gross went to Richard Berg whilst Low Net honours were taken by Marcelo De Jesus, John Dotch and Timo Karonen.

Congratulations to all our winners and the detailed results are here: Emeralda Results 15-03-20

Tee Set Match-Play

2 games played this week but only 1 result as Ric Wymer and Divya Ahuja finished all square just as the heavens opened leaving their game to be resolved. Arnold Castillon however pipped Lis Wymer 1 up to progress.

For those who have completed their games, please do not forget to report your results to James Ross by email and for those yet to play the first round games, please note the deadline for this round is 12th April. Check out the Match Play page for more information as needed.

A bit like the proverbial bus, after waiting many months for a confirmed booking we are offered a quick return visit after only 2 weeks. Originally, we were scheduled to visit Matoa and play an inaugural event with SMOGS this week but due to unforeseen circumstances, we need to move this event back a month and with the offer of a return visit to Emeralda in hand, it was an easy decision to go back there again.

Therefore, for the third week in a row we take a small trip down the Jagorawi toll to junction ni..ni..ni.. nineteen (ed: google Paul Hardcastle if you miss this one…) to the excellent Emeralda, a course which has proven popular with Tee Setters over the last couple of years. With its 27 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer you can walk the footsteps of legends whilst enjoying one of the more picturesque courses we will play all year.

The rate is Rp999k including cart and with an 11.30am tee time we will be able to enjoy fully the day and not be too late returning home. To come and join in all the fun of a Tee Set Sunday please sign up here.

“Hola” from Mexico City

Having first met on the Pacific island of Guam some 20 years, Matt Otto and President Roger Finnie’s paths crossed again at the 10th hole at Matoa golf course 4 years ago whilst both waited to tee off one Tee Set Sunday. Friendship rekindled, they remain in touch and Matt sends a warm welcome and best wishes to everyone in Tee Set from his new home in Mexico City,  having relocated there late last year.

Work and settling the family in are going well and Matt is looking forward to finding the local “Tee Set” group so he can get out on the links again now his clubs have arrived.

If anyone has any contacts and/or experience of golfing in or around Mexico City, Matt would appreciate the information. Please contact Roger Finnie to connect to him.

Sunday 8th March 2020 Riverside

The Day

Sunday was the first round of the JIL 2020 season and a return to Riverside for the matches. With 48 players taking part in the league and a further 20 players joining for our regular event, a healthy 36 players joined the Tee Set game for the week.

Despite all the rains recently, the course was in excellent shape thanks to the investment in drainage in recent years and we all enjoyed some of the best conditions we have seen for some weeks. The weather was also very cooperative with no rain interruptions during the day even if the odd heavenly grumble was heard a few times during the afternoon. Our only challenge was a busy course and with the morning competition still ongoing at our tee off time, we were to be out there for 5 1/2 hours. This unfortunately meant we lost a few players before the final prize-giving.

A warm Tee Set welcome to 2 new players this week, Steve Conlin and Srinivas Murthy and a warm welcome back to Ronald Dimaculangan after 64 weeks.

Thank you to VP Ric Wymer and our Secretary Beby for all their hard work on the day for the registrations, scoring and prize-giving. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

Lift, clean place and playing off the white tees for men helped ensure some competitive returns were made on the day but Riverside has several tricky holes and greens which are always going to help keep the Treasurer happy.

2 skirts on the day with Keith Gorman and Michael Mueller both looking the part whilst Juju Juhairiah edged out 5 others for Most Strokes. Monster Putter was taken by Chang Hyun Park. First Par for Handicaps >=30 went (again) to Timo Karonen whilst Most Improved was secured by Matthew Cherrett and First Sandy by Lis Wymer.

Bill Lloyd took home First Birdie and newcomer Srinivas Murthy was our Low Putter on the day. Simon Reynolds was Low Gross whilst our best net on the day was Jiro Kamigatakuchi, joined by Rakesh Surampudi and Roger Finnie in the Low Net winners circle.

Detailed results for the day are here: Riverside Results 08-03-20

Jakarta Inter-League

New Captain, Simon Reynolds, sent out his inaugural team selection to represent Tee Set in the first round of 2020’s JIL matches. Some excellent play by the team but a couple of close results fell Sandbagger’s way and we went down 3-7. In other matches, Pocksia and Cloggies shared the spoils 5-5 whilst Sentul Swingers edged out defending champions Tin Cups 6-4. The next round of matches will be on 19th April.

Congratulations to Juju Juhairiah who won Ladies long drive in the JIL skills challenge.

Although quite a few Tee Setters have put their hand up for the team, Simon will be happy to hear from any other players wishing to be included to the squad; if you are looking for more details please check out our Inter-league page on the website.

Tee Set Match-Play

2 games played at Riverside on Sunday in the first knock-out round with Lorenzo Marengo winning 7&6 over Michael Seabrook and Mark Johnson defeating Mike Webb 4&3.

Please do not forget to report your results to James Ross by email and for those yet to play the first round games, please note the deadline for this round is 12th April. Check out the Match Play page for more information as needed.

Accommodation options are being arranged at the R Hotel so there is no need to return to Jakarta overnight.

The week-end before includes a public holiday on Friday 1st May so we are planning a stay and play long-week-end at Gunung Geulis after our excellent visit there last year. Options include 1,2 or 3 nights at the Royal Tulip Hotel and golf to match – with the D.O.G.S. at Rancamaya on Saturday the same week-end, a visit there could also be combined with Tee Set golf on the East Course Friday and West Course Sunday.

Next Up: Riverside Sunday 8th March 2020 & JIL 11.30am Shot-gun

This Sunday we again take the short trip back down to Junction 19 on the Jagorawi toll, this time on the other side of the toll road as we visit the excellent Riverside course. The Greg Norman designed Riverside is always one of the most interesting challenges on the Tee Set schedule with the Shark’s trademark optical illusions regularly fooling the unwary.

In addition to our weekly schedule, this Sunday sees the first round of the 2020 Jakarta Inter-League (JIL) season as Tee Set’s team, under the leadership of this year’s Captain Simon Reynolds, seeks to regain the crown last won in 2015. For those interested in more details of JIL please see the website page here.

As usual, for those Tee Set players participating in JIL (whether for Tee Set or otherwise), please also sign up as normal for the weekly competition so we can capture you for both events.

To join us for the fun of one of Jakarta’s finest courses on Sunday just sign up here as usual. Green fees of Rp850,000 including a shared cart and some free range balls with a tee time of 11.30pm.

Notes:

(1) please be registered before 11.00am as we will have a shot-gun start and it takes a little more time to get bags/players organized out to the respective holes

(2) as JIL will be played off the white tees for men, we will play the white tees for Tee Set too. Ladies remain on the red tees.

Options include 1,2 or 3 nights at the Royal Tulip Hotel and golf to match – with the D.O.G.S. at Rancamaya on Saturday the same week-end, a visit there could also be combined with Tee Set golf on the East Course Friday and West Course Sunday.

More details of the Gunung Geulis week-end are posted here. Please contact Bill Lloyd bill.lloyd@asiantigers-indonesia.com directly to confirm your interest and details of which package you wish to book.

More details of the Rancamaya week-end are posted here. Please contact Mark Johnson markstevenjohnson56@gmail.com directly to confirm your interest and details of which package you wish to book.

Thank you to Bill and Mark for their efforts in putting these 2 packages together along with John & Sarah Brown for their negotiation and arrangements with Rancamaya.

As always, for those just wishing to join either or both events for Sunday only, we welcome you to come and join the fun. Bookings for Sunday only will be via the normal sign-up which will open in the week before each event.

Ramadan Golf Week-ends May 2020

The quieter traffic on the Jagorawi Toll during this period makes it an excellent time to head a little bit further into the Bogor area for our golf events. Your committee has therefore decided to arrange 2 long week-end opportunities in early May and both options are now shown on the Tee Set website main menu.

As usual we will be playing our annual match against the Djakarta Old Golfing Society at Rancamaya and this has been set for the week-end of 9th and 10th May. We will have a social round on Saturday followed by a BBQ, which will be sponsored for Tee Set regulars, and then the regular society golf days on Sunday in parallel to our match versus the D.O.G.S. for the Juergen Degert Trophy. Accommodation options are being arranged at the R Hotel so there is no need to return to Jakarta overnight.

Sunday 1st March 2020 Emeralda

The Day

Our numbers were no doubt curtailed on Sunday as the weather forecast for the day showed an 80% chance of rain all day at Emeralda and so a few of our potential players quite understandably took the safe option of keeping dry at home. However, 80% chance of rain also means 20% chance of no rain and so it was to prove with the 25 Tee Setters who turned out rewarded by a window of dry weather for 5 hours which just happened to coincide with our tee time. It meant we were to all get around, largely dry, despite the grumblings of the oncoming storms which arrived and closed the course just as we completed our round.

That we were to be able to finish was thanks to the team at Emeralda which looked after us and ensured we could all start with a semi-shot gun just as the morning rains finished. With lift, clean and place in play, we were able to avoid most of the challenges of the wet and soft conditions and the scores returned on the day reflected this as the course was generally in good condition given all the rain recently.

2 newcomers on the day with a warm Tee Set welcome being given to Mike Kasli and Grace Tang and a warm welcome back to both Peter Bosterli after 29 weeks and Mick Dodsworth after 14 weeks.

Many thanks to Lis Wymer for coordinating the registrations and pairings with the course management and to Ric Wymer for the scoring on the day.

The Play

Fined only the normal amount for a ball which apparently failed to reach even the Blue Tees, a shy David Baglivo was surprisingly our only skirt on the day. Monster Putter went to Andrew Shaw whilst Timo Karonen again secured First Par for Handicaps >=30 which, as is equally regular, off set his fine, this week for Most Strokes.

Low Putts went to the returning Peter Bosterli whilst Jari Antikainen won First Birdie. Low Gross on the day went to our reigning Low Gross Champion Richard Mau.

Excellent rounds in the conditions were turned in by VP Bill Lloyd (net 65) and Indar Dhaliwal (68) to secure Low Net awards where they were joined by Roger Finnie.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Emeralda Results 01-03-20

Next Up: Riverside and Jakarta Inter-League 8th March 2020 11.30 shot-gun

Sunday 23rd February 2020 Cengkareng

The Day

Whilst we arrived to a hot sunny day and were able to complete the round without interruptions from above, there was no escaping the impact of the recent heavy rains with the course playing much softer than usual; both on the fairways and the greens. This was reflected in the scores which are below but nevertheless, the 49 Tee Setters who turned out on the day had a good round and were well looked after by the Cengkareng team as usual.

4 newcomers on the day and a warm Tee Set welcome was given to Claire Pak, Jean-Pierre Seveke, Tom Soulsby and Noel Morrow. A healthy number of welcome backs too with Werner Lenten (87 weeks), Tony Blackburn (69) Daniel Brown (59) and Andrew Mackin (50) the most notable.

A reminder to everyone to be conscious on the speed of play, particularly with a large group as we had on Sunday. On a few occasions some of the groups were a little behind which causes issues for the groups behind and for the course who are looking to get everyone round on time whilst accommodating our bookings. Please also respect the guidance from the marshals who are there to ensure we can enjoy our round.

Many thanks to Ric and Beby for managing the day in the continued absence of the President. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

Despite the soft conditions, only a “usual” number of skirts returned on the day with Cory Packard, Craig Edwards, Doug McQuater, Ezra Alexander, Indar Dhaliwal, Mike Riley and Timo Karonen all sharing the dress up outfit. Jude Alexander was our Most Strokes awardee and Lis Wymer Monster Putter.

Timo Karonen has made First Par for Handicaps >= 30 his own recently to win back his fine whilst Most Improved went to James Ross and 1st Sandy to Bruce Smart. Dave Prosser had our only Eagle but on his 19th hole in the match play so was not able to be awarded for this; however he also secured 1st Birdie so did not go home empty handed

Low Putts went to Robert Watt and Low Gross to Tom Soulsby. Low Net winners were Daniel Brown (c/b from Robert), Ric Wymer and Indar Dhaliwal.

In the Monthly Competitions, Craig Binks won our NTP and Shawn Berg and Santi Miller were our Long Drives.

Taking home the Monthly Medal and getting name on the shield for the first time was Jari Antikainen who returned an impressive 45 points on the day; comfortably ahead of the field which was led by our runner up, Indar Dhaliwal, on 40 points.

Congratulations to all our winners and the detailed results are here: Cengkareng Results 23-02-20

Tee Set Match Play

Sunday was the last date for the first bracket placement round to be completed and a number of games where held at Cengkareng. 2 matches went beyond the 18th hole with Dave Prosser adding an eagle on the 19th hole to his opening birdie to squeeze passed 2018 runner-up Santi Miller 1up whilst James Bristow won a putt-off over Leon Bivolaru to head into the Emas bracket as well.

4 other matches were decided in regulation. Dave Barnes won 3&2 against Timo Karonen with Arnold Castillon beating Dan Javier by the same score. Lis and Ric Wymer were also both winners on the day with Lis winning 2&1 against David Baglivo and Ric winning 4&2 against Graham Parsonage.

For the matches not completed as scheduled last Sunday, our Match Play Supremo, James Ross, will be adjudicating them based on the usual criteria to determine which bracket each player will fall into. This will be updated shortly along with the results from Sunday above – please a reminder to confirm the results by email to James asap as they are only final when reported by the players – not by your scribe…..

Please check out the Match Play page on the website to find your emas or kuning bracket match-up for the next round; first knock-out round games are due to be played by 12th April.

This week we take a small trip down the Jagorawi toll to the excellent Emeralda which has proven popular with Tee Setters over the last couple of years, if somewhat hard to get a confirmed booking! Thank you to VP Ric Wymer for his perseverance for securing this week’s arrangements.
