The Day

After a successful inaugural visit to Takara in February, we scheduled a return visit for last Sunday. Sign-ups were looking healthy until the announcement of the re-imposition of social distancing requirements in Jakarta and we lost around a third of those initially signed up to play such that a rather exclusive group of 16 Tee Setters were there to tee it up.

  

Although not particularly tricky, a lack of course knowledge or some unseen challenges again caught us out with only 2 players breaking net par this visit, there were only 3 last time too. Arrangements at the course however, were very smooth with us hitting off some 15 minutes early and getting round in good time on a course playing fast and hard but with the weather also perfect for golf.

No new comers this week and a welcome back to Richard Berg after 6 months away.

Many thanks to Simon Reynolds for making the booking and a huge thanks to Jens Roestel who stepped up and took care of the arrangements on the day.

The Play

A four-way tie for Most Strokes between Alastair Livingston, Bill Lloyd, Cucu Chandra and Richard Berg with a solitary skirt secured by Robert Watt and Monster Putter by Patrick Chaundy. Robert getting his money back with Low Putts and Bill for First Sandy.

First Birdie went to Jens Roestel whilst Richard Berg also was back in the money with Low Gross on the day. Our Low Net winners were James Bristow, Sami Kekonen and Tom Grace.

Tee Set Championship 2020 Cengkareng – Saturday 28th November

With just over 10 weeks to go until the last week-end in November, its time to launch sign-ups and other arrangements for the 2020 Tee Set Championships. A little later than planned, your President having got way-laid over the week-end but here we go….

After an 8 year run at Matoa, following earlier editions at Pangkalan Jati and Jagorawi, we have decided to make a move to Cengkareng Golf Course, home of the monthly medal for the past 3 years and a course where we have also been very well looked after. In a further refresh of arrangements, we have decided to hold the event on Saturday afternoon so that everyone can party the night away and still wake up for a Sunday game Matoa… just a little later than usual on the last Sunday of November and with our friends from the Djakarta Old Golf Society. A big thank you to the DOGS committee for accommodating our change in arrangements.

As always, our sponsors are key to the event and we will be looking to both re-sign up our existing sponsors and secure some new ones to make the day run successfully; look out for a message from event coordinator Ric Wymer or even better, please contact him if you are able to help out.

More details on the day will follow soon but in the meantime, registrations are open here: 2020-tee-set-championship-registration/. The event field is limited to 100 players, so there are just 99 slots remaining….any extras go onto the waiting list on a first come first reserved basis.

New course, new day, new timing… is it time for a new President.? With the existing President reaching his 4th Championship at the head of the Society, we will be calling for new blood to step-up and take Tee Set forward. Look out for details on how to put your name forward to take on this rewarding and illustrious position.

Next Up Riverside Sunday 20th September 2020 11.30am Shot-gun

Riverside

This Sunday we again take the short trip back down to Junction 19 on the Jagorawi toll as we visit the excellent Riverside course. The Greg Norman designed Riverside is always one of the most interesting challenges on the Tee Set schedule with the Shark’s trademark optical illusions regularly fooling the unwary.

In addition to our weekly schedule, this Sunday is also the 4th round of the 2020 Jakarta Inter-League (JIL) season as Tee Set’s team, under the leadership of this year’s Captain Simon Reynolds, battle to regain the crown last won in 2015. For those interested in more details of JIL please see the website page here.

As usual, for those Tee Set players participating in JIL (whether for Tee Set or otherwise), please also sign up as normal for the weekly competition so we can capture you for both events.

To join us for the fun of one of Jakarta’s finest courses on Sunday just sign up here as usual. Green fees of Rp850,000 including a shared cart and some free range balls with a tee time of 11.30pm.

Notes:

(1) please be registered before 11.00am as we will have a shot-gun start and it takes a little more time to get bags/players organized out to the respective holes

(2) as JIL will be played off the white tees for men, we will play the white tees for Tee Set too. Ladies remain on the red tees.

Next Up: Takara Golf Resort Sunday 13th September 11.30am

After a successful inaugural visit to Takara Golf Resort in February and following the good feedback we had from that visit, we have decided to add another visit to the schedule for this Sunday.

Takara is around 55 km west of Jakarta on the Tangerang-Merak Toll, exit one later than Kedaton at the East Balaraja Toll Gate 1 and head south – best look it up on google maps. Please allow 80-90 minutes to get there – last time the journey home was very smooth.

Thanks to Simon Reynolds, We have negotiated a good rate for this return visit at Rp700,000 including cart (usually Rp725,000 walking) and the tee time is 11.30am. If you are interested to sign up and try our this new venue with us please do so here.

The distance is around the same as Rancamaya or Lotus Lakes but for those who usually taxi, we would be happy to help coordinate with other Tee Setters to arrange lift sharing if you are not able to find someone yourselves. Please make a note when signing up in the comments box so we can get onto it early in the week.

Sunday 6th September 2020 Jagorawi New Course

The Day

A healthy turnout of 35 Tee Setters at Jagorawi to tackle the New Course on Sunday with the weather proving to be just one of the challenges of the day with very hot and humid conditions challenging everyone to remain appropriately hydrated. Another of the challenges seemed to be reading emails sent on Friday & Saturday alerting everyone to the earlier tee time of 11.30am so, despite the course being ready for us, a few of the players were rocking up for a 12pm start. Thankfully, Arron Cole and his team were on top of things and a mini-shot gun allowed us to tee off in good time and with the course being relatively empty in front of us, we were round in good time.

The last of our little challenges was the fact that some of the caddies were new and inexperienced at driving the carts, this caused a few near misses and a couple of crashes before players worked out to drive themselves or walk were the safer options. All in the normal Tee Set day…..

A warm Tee Set welcome to Patrick Chaundy who joined for the first time and welcome backs to Supachai Suesomboon, Samret Raungrit, Joseph D’Cruz, Miguel Angel Veronesi and Jens Roestel.

A thank you to Lis Wymer for assisting with the weekly registrations and scoring on the day and to VP Ric Wymer for leading the prize-giving ceremonies in the continued absence of the President.

The Play

A couple of names very prominently featured on the results sheet. Firstly Max Selle who got the trifecta of booby prizes taking home a Skirt, Most Strokes and Monster Putter; being joined by Dmitri Burge for the Skirt and Jari Antikainen for Most Strokes.

Most Improved went to Alastair Livingston whilst Dmitri got his money back by taking home First Par for Handicaps >=30. First Sandy went to James Bristow whilst June Alexander took home First Birdie. Samret Raungrit took Low Putts.

The irrepressible VP Bill Lloyd pitched in on hole 6 for our only Eagle of the day whilst Richard Mau was up for any number of prizes but taking home Low Gross after his impressive round. Our Low Net winners were Gaurav Shirke, Supachai Suesomboon and Riahana Ariestya.

This week we make our second visit of the year and look forward to playing the excellent but tricky golfing challenge of the New Course where you really need to think through many of your shots, particularly off the tee. Note we have requested the Old Course but due to maintenance on it this week the condition may not be a good as usual. However if the course is in reasonable condition we will make a late switch to the Old Course.

Tee time is 12.00pm officially but we are expecting to get off a little earlier and possibly with a shot-gun start so we ask all of you to be at the course before 11.00am please.

Sunday 30th August 2020 Cengkareng

The Day

Sunday was the end of a long week-end of golf with the ever popular Asian Tigers 45 Hole tournament played on Friday, regular society games on Saturday and Tee Set’s monthly medal played on Sunday… fully 81 holes of golf for the most hardy or foolhardy! of us over 3 days. It may account for the late drop out of several players but with some last minute sign-ups we had a reasonable turnout of 43 players this week.

The weather was perfect for golf and we got round in reasonable time, although some groups got a little detached and found themselves behind one or two new groups who filled the gap… a reminder to everyone to try and keep up the pace of play please. The course was in good conditions with the greens playing a bit faster this week and the gentle breeze was enough to keep everyone thinking about club selection.

A warm Tee Set welcome to Pete Masters and a warm welcome back to Alyric Merriott after 52 weeks, Andy Briston (12 weeks), Manfred Borer (107 weeks), Paul Franklin (124 weeks) and Ronan O’Neill (61 weeks).

A big thank you to Craig Edwards for his assistance with registrations and to VP Ric Wymer for being the master of ceremonies and managing the scoring after the round. Having completed his operation, your President is now counting down the weeks to November when he hopes to be back in action….

A note of congratulations to VP Bill Lloyd on the success of his Asian Tigers 45 holes Challenge event on Friday. With 65 players taking on the 45 hole challenge and 29 players turning out for the more relaxed 18 hole version, the event had its largest turnout ever. Congratulations to regular Tee Setters Paul Daud and Lis Wymer who won Best Gross and Best Net on the 18 hole tournament. Gavin Webb and James Huang, respectively, took the prizes on the 45 Hole Challenge.

The Play

A SNAFU on the management of the database means we are unable to recover the results sheet for the usually excellent results summary. Apologies for any mistakes…but matching the scoring to the photos was slightly complicated by some winners going early after a long week-end of golf.

A trifecta of prizes for Dmitri Burge with his Most Strokes and Monster Putter being offset financially by Most Improved. Tom Grace joining Dmitri for Monster Putter and newcomer, Pete Masters sharing the Most Improved prize too. Michael Mueller and Timo Karonen were our only 2 skirts on the day, a rather low return for Cengkareng. Saving the family coffers, Cucu Chandra secured First Sandy along with Alastair Livingston.

Low Putter on the day was Craig Edwards and Low Gross Richard Mau whilst our Low Net prizes were secured by Santi Miller, Juju Juhaeriah and Graeme Bain.

James Bristow and Rosie Tjaden were our Long Drivers and Graeme Bain and Lis Wymer the Near Pins in the monthly medal skill prize categories.

Cleaning up however on the Monthly Medal was David Baglivo who returned 42 points to win by 1 point from Graeme Bain.

Tee Set Eclectic Cycle XII

Congratulations to Jari Antikainen who took home the honours in the first completed cycle in 2020. Our 12th different winner so we still await the first 2-time winner as we enter Cycle XIII

Next Up: Monthly Medal Cengkareng Sunday 30th August 2020

Another month has whizzed by with the World Cup, Birthday Scramble and Inter-league all being held these past few weeks, so we find ourselves at the end of August and ready for our Monthly Medal.  Thus, on Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and certainly one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng. We will have our August Monthly Medal and the first round of the Eclectic Cycle XIII – 12 in the books and still no 2 time winner!.

A lot to compete for but those just wanting a relaxing round whilst being taken care of by the excellent team at Cengkareng should also sign up.

If you are able to join us please sign up here. First tee time is 12.oopm as usual and the green fee is Rp.875,000. Please note that Cengkareng have in place procedures to comply with social distancing requirements; these will apply both pre- & post round plus on the course and we are all expected to follow these whilst at the Club.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng has available a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts

Committee Message

Your scribe and President has failed his MOT and gone in to the chop shop for running repairs, expected time frame to be operational again is 10-12 weeks and Tee Set will be under the safe guidance of VPs Ric Wymer and Bill Lloyd in the meantime. Please direct inquiries on arrangements over the next few weeks to them –  the schedule thankfully is now up to date and confirmed for most of this time frame so please see the website page for this. Thank you in advance to those who usually step up to assist week to week for their support to the Committee and see you all on the other side…..

Sunday 23rd August 2020 Riverside & JIL Rd III

The Day

Sunday saw our regular Tee Set event and JIL Round III at Riverside with 68 golfers turning out to play and 38 of these also joining into the Tee Set game. The course was in good condition and the weather spectacular all day which made for an excellent round once we got out onto the course.

Our only hiccup was a slightly delayed start for those scheduled on the back 9 semi shot gun as we needed to wait for carts and caddies to be available from the morning. A little frustrating at the time due to a lack of information but thank you to the Riverside GM for calling afterwards to apologize and explain that an unannounced, unscheduled  VVVIP group had decided to come and somewhat thrown arrangements awry. That said, we all finished in good time and despite fear of the long weekend traffic, the ride home was quick.

A warm Tee Set welcome to our newcomers, Steve Tucker and Rolf and Kikki Keil (pictured). Eric Mary at 10 weeks our only notable welcome back.  We look forward to seeing you all out again soon.

The Play

No skirts today but as is often the case, our new-comers were recognized during the prize-giving, this week Rolf Keil for Most Strokes and Kikki Keil for Monster Putter. Bob Fleischmann was our Most Improved and Mark Johnson  First Sandy. Andy Coop won First Birdie and Roger Finnie was our Low Putter on the day. Some excellent scoring on the day, net and gross, and Tee Set Captain Simon Reynolds led the way with his excellent Low Gross of 76.

Our Low Net winners (after a flight correction) were Fernando Gaggino, Marcelo de Jesus and Christine Lie. Detailed results are here: Riverside 2308 Results

Christine was back up again for her Long Drive in the JIL novelty holes where she was joined by Harry Lopez (LD) and Alastair Livingston (NTP).

On the day Tee Set lost 3 matches by a very close margin and were pipped by JIL ladder leaders Cloggies 4-6 whilst elsewhere Sandbaggers beat Tin Cups 6-4 and Pocksia beat Sentul Swingers 8-2.

Next Up: Monthly Medal Cengkareng Sunday 30th August 2020

Although we did a quick roll call of winners last night at Riverside, a few cards were missing some critical details and a couple of questions came up on the results as a consequence. We will review the results over the next day or so and in the meantime we roll over to next week-end to give everyone plenty of time to sign-up.

Sunday 16th August 2020 Bogor Raya

The Day

An excellent turnout of 46 Tee Setters for this popular course on what was at the start of the day, a bright, warm sunny day. With a few late sign-ups, the course advanced our tee time by 30 minutes to ensure we all got off on time and so with groups completed and submitted to the starter at 11am as requested, we headed down to the practice area with keen anticipation of an excellent day.

Sadly, the early promise of a smooth day evaporated fairly quickly as the starter staff and management failed to coordinate such that the team loading carts had no clue on the pairings when we descended en-mass to start. After some confusion rained, groups were finally connected together and sent out to start on the 2 nines close to our original start time. Having held back other bookings to enable us to start as booked, the starter then proceeded to throw the waiting groups out in front of us which only served to concertina everyone together with only the first groups getting a relatively clean round. All would have OK but the rains then descended on the course at around 5.15pm and when they finally opened and pushed us off the course, most groups still had 2 or 3 holes to play, some 5 1/2 hours after we started. Chaos continued to beset us but enough on all of that for now…. feedback has been provided to Bogor Raya who offer their apologies…..

A warm Tee Set welcome to 3 newcomers on the day, Terrance Martin, Paul Sweeney and Sebastian Braun. Thank you for coming out and joining us and we hope to see you back soon. A warm welcome back to Chakkapong Yingwatt after an impressive 168 weeks and to Aaron Davies after a more modest 21 weeks.

Thank you to Mark Johnson and Craig Edwards for their support on registrations and to Mark for helping out with the scoring input and calculations of the equitable adjustments required for those who could not complete the round.

The Play No skirts on the day but newcomer Sebastian Braun managed a trifecta of awards in adding 1st Par for Handicaps >=30 to his Most Strokes and Monster Putter. Feeling curious, another of our new comers, Paul Sweeney decided to get a practice pose in with the monkey…. much to the delight of Michael Seabrook.

First Sandy was shared between Alastair Livingston and Mark Johnson whilst First Birdie went to Brett Shields and Low Putts to David Baglivo.

Richard Mau won Low Gross and our Low Net winners were Roger Finnie, Matthew Makarenko and Holger Molendyk.

In addition to our weekly schedule, this Sunday is also the 3rd round of the 2020 Jakarta Inter-League (JIL) season as Tee Set’s team, under the leadership of this year’s Captain Simon Reynolds, seeks to regain the crown last won in 2015. For those interested in more details of JIL please see the website page here.

As usual, for those Tee Set players participating in JIL (whether for Tee Set or otherwise), please also sign up as normal for the weekly competition so we can capture you for both events.

To join us for the fun of one of Jakarta’s finest courses on Sunday just sign up here as usual. Green fees of Rp850,000 including a shared cart and some free range balls with a tee time of 11.30pm.

Notes:

(1) please be registered before 11.00am as we will have a shot-gun start and it takes a little more time to get bags/players organized out to the respective holes

(2) as JIL will be played off the white tees for men, we will play the white tees for Tee Set too. Ladies remain on the red tees.
