Sunday 15th September 2019 Riverside

The Day

Sunday saw us back at Riverside for our regular Sunday game and the 4th round of the Jakarta Inter-League competition for 2019. As usual there were a healthy number of Tee Setters present across many teams and 23 choose to join the Tee Set game as well the JIL competition.

Being a regular event now, Riverside continued to make tweaks to the arrangements which contributed to the smooth running of the day. We were all off in good time with the shot-gun start and finished in good time with the fair weather.

No newcomers this week but a warm welcome back to David Baglivo who was back in town after 42 weeks away.

A big thank you to Simon Oxley and Ric Wymer for making all the arrangements on the day for both Tee Set and JIL and to the Riverside team for their support as usual to a good day.

The Play

Despite the heat of JIL games, there were no skirts and no Monster Putter so the Treasurer needed to be content with 2 contributions for Most Strokes with VP Ric Wymer and Ezra Alexander sharing this honor. First Sandy went to Keith Gorman and First Birdie to Shawn Berg. Low Gross went to Simon Reynolds.

Winning his fine back for Low Net B was Ezra Alexander where he was joined by Laurie O’Connor for Low Net C and after an excellent 78 gross, Low Net A winner Mark Fiorello.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Form_ Current Results riverside 150919

In the JIL matches, Tee Set ran out winners 8-2 over Sandbaggers whilst in the other matches, Tin Cups won by the same margin over Sentul Swingers and Cloggies beat Pocksia 9-1. With 1 round remaining, Tee Set lie second in the table, 4 points behind defending Champions Tin Cups.

Next Up: Padang Modern 22nd September 2019 12.00pm

This Sunday sees us back at Padang Modern for only our second visit of the year but where we are always well looked after and have an enjoyable round. Tee time is 12.00pm and the cost, including cart, is Rp850,000.

Next Up: Riverside Sunday 15th September 2019

This Sunday we take the short trip down to Junction 19 on the Jagorawi toll to visit the excellent Riverside course. The Greg Norman designed Riverside is always one of the most interesting challenges on the Tee Set schedule with the Shark’s trademark optical illusions regularly fooling the unwary.

In addition to our weekly schedule, this Sunday sees the 3rd round of the 2019 Jakarta Inter-League season as Tee Set’s team looks to build on its solid start to the league. As usual, for those Tee Set players participating in JIL (whether for Tee Set or otherwise), please also sign up as normal for the weekly competition so we can capture you for both events.

To join us for the fun of one of Jakarta’s finest courses on Sunday just sign up here as usual. Green fees of Rp850,000 including a shared cart and some free range balls with a tee time of 11.30pm: please be there before 10.30am as we will have a shot-gun start so it takes a little more time to get bags/players organized and out to the respective holes

Other events

Please check out the Classified page on the website for details of the upcoming PNG National Day golf day this Friday and 2 great non-golf events which are being supported by Tee Set sponsors and which you may enjoy: (1) the Australian Rules Grand Final party 0n September 28th and (2) San Miguel Oktoberfest party on October 4th/5th

Sunday 8th September 2019 Gading Raya

The Day

A rather smaller than expected 22 Tee Setters headed out this Sunday to what is usually a popular venue for us at Gading Raya. The day itself was overcast but otherwise dry and with the course being quiet around our appointed tee time, we headed out in good time for our 2 tee start and what was looking to be a smooth round. Sadly, we were to experience a delay on one side as additional groups were inserted at the turn and so the quicker finishers were enjoying a rather long wait over refreshments as we had to get all the results in to conduct the prize-giving.

One newcomer on the day and a warm Tee Set welcome to Olivier Herzog, who wasted no time getting in amongst the presentations as can be seen below. A warm welcome back to Mick Mongold after 50 weeks and Mike Harling after 27 weeks. We look forward to welcoming you all back soon.

Many thanks to VP Ric Wymer for managing arrangements on the day in the continued absence of The President and photos of the day are here.

The Play

Unusually for Gading, no Monster Putter this week but contributions for 2 skirts from Olivier Herzog and Steve Bowhill and Most Strokes from Bill Lloyd just about kept the Treasurer happy. Olivier however was to recover his fine securing Most Improved on the day.

First Birdie was presented to Jari Antikainen and Low Gross to the returning Mick Mongold.

2 notable results in the Low Net winners category with Shawn Berg shooting under 80 for the first time to secure Low Net A and  Tan Chee Hwa’s incredible net 59 sending the statisticians into the record books to see if this was the lowest ever Tee Set score returned. Not to be outdone, Paul Daud also returned a great score of net 65 to join them.

Congratulations to all our winners on the day and detailed results are here: Form_ Current Results gading 150919

Sunday 1st September 2019 Bumi Serpong Damai

The Day

A slightly overcast day greeted the 25 Tee Setters who headed out on Sunday to one of Jakarta’s premier courses, BSD. Amongst the group were a few weary, and worse for wear, bodies who had completed Jakarta’s best golf marathon on Friday, the Asian Tigers 45 Hole Challenge and then gone out again Saturday with D.O.G.S. before joining Tee Set on Sunday.  Congratulations to VP Bill Lloyd and his team for another great event last Friday.

The overcast conditions made for a cooler day out and with the starter getting us off on time, we enjoyed a smooth round in relatively quick time even if a few groups were inserted just before us at the turn.

4 newcomers on the day with Ryan Macdonald, Marc De Rouw, Jan Vistisen and Alyric Merriott all getting a warm Tee Set welcome. Warm welcome backs to Chad Hinzman, Matthew Cherrett, Andy Doran and Tony Cowan.

After the prize giving, a few players who were not in rush home then retired to Casa de la Mexicana to finish off an excellent week-end. Thank you to VP Ric Wymer, ably assisted as always by Lis Wymer, for managing the day. Photos of the day can be found here.

The Play

With play off the white tees for men, there were no skirts on the day but the tricky greens and pin placements ensured we had some challengers for Monster Putter with newcomer Ryan MacDonald leading all comers with 49 putts. Jari Antikainen broke the log jam on 10 with his Most Strokes of 11 but was able to recover some money with his Low Putts award.

Most Improved went to one of our weekend marathoners, Andy Doran, whilst Tan Chee Hwa took home First Sandy and Axel Hertzke First Birdie.

An excellent round with 14 pars saw Richard Mau take home Low Gross for his 77 whilst Simon Oxley, James Ross and Michael Mueller, the latter 2 on count-backs, took home Low Net honours.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results can be found here: Form_ Current Results bsd 010919

Sunday 25th August 2019 Cengkareng Monthly Medal

The Day

A busy Tee Set month of golf came to a close on Sunday with our regular visit to Cengkareng for our 8th Monthly Medal of 2019; 30 players making to short trip west to enjoy a relaxed round and the excellent service in the clubhouse. The weather was bright and sunny but a swirling wind ensured that everyone needed to be careful on their shot selection and scores were a little higher than normal on the day for the course.

One newcomer was given a warm Tee Set welcome on the day with Pakorn Suttiluk joining our growing contingent of Thai golfers coming each week. A warm welcome back to Robert Sweigart and Mikko Heinonen after 37 and 19 weeks, respectively.

Many thanks to VP Ric Wymer and Secretary Beby for looking after the day and the pictures are here.

The Play

As most know, your scribe is travelling and with the VP of Almost Everything rather overcome with the outcome of events at Headingley, written reports shared on the day’s play were rather light. I have tried to decipher most of the pictures sent through but apologies if I missed, or mis-characterized, anyone’s performance below.

Taking home a tri-fecta of booby prizes this week, Monster Putter & Most Strokes awardee, Oliver Fritz, was joined by 3 of our big winners on the day, Brett Shields, David Prosser and Geoff Thwaites, for the Skirt photo. Most Improved was shared this week between Peraphon and Jude Alexander.

First Sandy went to James Ross whilst First Birdie went to Volker Hamann. Low Putts was awarded to Robert Watt and Low Gross on the day was Keith Gorman.

Our Low Net winners this week were Shawn Berg, Lis Wymer and Bretts Shields whilst David Prosser took home both Monthly Medal skill prizes cleaning up the Long Drive and Near Pin awards.

Our Monthly Medalist for August was Geoff Thwaites who scored an impressive 44 points. Geoff gets to have his name engraved on the shield he has sponsored and joins our other medalists for 2019 in the Tee Set honours lists.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: 20190825 Form_ Current Results

Next Up: Monthly Medal Cengkareng Sunday 25th August 2019

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2019.

In addition to being the 8th Monthly Medal of 2019, this week will also be the first round of Cycle XI of the Tee Set Eclectic. With Cycle X winner, Matthew Powell, having departed Jakarta, we will definitely have a new winner: will it be another new name on the Trophy or will one of our past Champions rise to the occasion again.?

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp850,000 walking please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual.

A quick note to all players, President Roger Finnie will be absent for the next 3 weeks so please contact VPs Ric Wymer or Bill Lloyd for any immediate queries on our upcoming events or other Tee Set matters.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng management have purchased a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.

2019 Tee Set World Cup of Golf at Riverside Sunday 18th August

The Day

30236541663_fd825dfd0b_z

Tee Set’s World Cup of Golf held its 4th edition last Sunday and whilst the format of the event has evolved a little since it was launched in 2016 thanks to the initiative of the Singing President and his Committee, one thing had remained constant with Srikandi winning each year. We were therefore back to Riverside to see if it would be a 4-peat!!

11 teams competed that inaugural year and so it was great to see the evolution of the event with 80 players arriving at Riverside to represent one of the 20 teams entered for 2019’s World Cup event. Event Supremo, Craig Edwards did a great job in hustling teams for the event and many thanks to him and the Team Captains for getting so many players out for what is now our 3rd biggest event of the year.

Like the Anniversary scramble, team events are an opportunity for some new-comers to experience a Tee Set Sunday and we welcomed an impressive 12 new players on the day. A warm Tee Set welcome was given to Alfred Lee, Aprinius, Bambang Sadewo, David Bidau, Jason Lock, Jussi Nakai, Mark Dressler, Petri Lahdekorpi, Santeri Rantala, Thanawat Tarinampong, Victor Tang and Wisnu.  Apologies if we missed anyone out… and for those not below, we will capture your photo next time you join.

Sadly, we also needed to wish Bon Voyage and Au Revoir to Joe Callahan who played his last Tee Set game before departing Jakarta to take up his next posting with the US Embassy – Joe was not to go away empty handed as further covered below.

The day sees several teams make a great effort to coordinate on out-fits and some colourful ensembles graced the fairways on Sunday. Given the efforts made by some teams, we introduced an extra prize for best dressed this year.

The day itself blessed us with perfect sunny golfing weather. With the course playing firm and the greens being receptive after some over-night rain, we all enjoyed an excellent day on the fairways with friends. Given the numbers, Riverside arranged a full shot-gun start and big thank you to all the staff there for helping ensure our round was smooth and that we could enjoy the evening prize-giving over refreshments until well into the evening.

In addition to the prize giving for the day, we also had one presentation delayed from the scramble day due the absence of former President Geoff Thwaites that week. Geoff was presented with the Clyde Wickiser Memorial Trophy as our Club Man for the year and received a well earned ovation from all present as well as a cake to mark the occasion kindly donated by Richard Mau.

Lots of contributions to make the day run smoothly and in addition to the aforementioned, a thank you to VP Ric Wymer, Peng Siong and Shinta at Riverside, John Brown and Craig Ewers.

The Play

Our skill awards on the day were won by Dave Prosser and Iris Rothenberg for their Long Drives and by Audie Kaunang for his Near Pin.

Best Dressed Team went to the US Embassy Team of Joe Callahan, Matt Otto, Andrew Shaw and Rakesh Surampudi, whilst special recognition was given to the 3 teams from Finland who were all coordinated in the same shirt design, …at least until late replacement Michael Mueller had to fill in on one of their teams!

Team prizes were given for Best Net and Best Gross (3 lowest player scores counting per hole for each team), albeit one prize per team only as usual in Tee Set. The winner of Low Gross was Aces of Trump (Bill Lloyd, Mark Souders, Jeff Landau, Richard Mau) with a final score of 241 off the stick with the teams of Arjuna (Audie Kaunang, Fitrat Ameer, Bambang Sadewo, Aprinius) and Garuda (Satya Santoso, Dippo, Fuad Yusuf, Risky Fabriando) taking the 2 runner-up spots.

Winners of the Low Net and the World Cup Trophy for 2019 was our UN team of Mark Fiorello, Jude Alexander, Billy Variava and Jaco Zaayman with Singapore (Peng Siong, Alfred Lee, Victor Tang, Wishnu) and Southern Ocean (Mark Scheide, Gavin Webb, Gary White, Rob Nicholls) taking the runners up spots.

Congratulation to all the winners and we look forward to seeing you all out again next year. Detailed results are below – as the Trophy goes to the Low Net winner, these places were allocated first before the Low Gross… in case you were asking!!

Next Up: Cengkareng Monthly Medal Sunday 25th August 2019

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2019.

In addition to being the 8th Monthly Medal of 2019, this week will also be the first round of Cycle XI of the Tee Set Eclectic. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.

2nd Annual East Java Challenge update: As already noted, numbers were low and now hearing the course is rather dry in the evenings, we have decided to postpone this event to another date. We will post again once a date has been found to propose: likely near the end of the year.

Next Up: Riverside Sunday 18th August 12.30pm Shot-Gun

Tee Set World Cup Event

The 4th edition of Tee Set’s World Cup of Golf event is now upon us and we look forward to a great day with many teams vying to wrestle the trophy off 3-time defending Champions, Srikandi. Following the good feedback from last year’s format, the World Cup will be held as a 1 day event again but we are returning to its inaugural venue, Riverside.

The format will remain unchanged from 2018 with Teams of 4 competing for Best Net and Best Gross prizes and of course, the Tee Set World Cup Trophy – best 3 of 4 scores counting per hole for the team score.

The Event Supremo, Craig Edwards has already got 18 teams registered (see here to check out teams already registered) for the competition but we still have room for a few more… Remember teams are by nationality/logical geographical regions with national bragging rights on the line, so please sign up here when you are ready with your team.

For those not yet in a team or just wanting to come along and join the day, registrations are open for single players and please sign up here.

Please note we will have a  shot-gun start at 12.30pm so please be at the course by 11.30am so can complete registrations and prepare carts to the allocated starting holes.

2nd Annual East Java Challenge

Under the leadership of former President Craig Ewers and Mark Fiorello, we have arranged the 2nd East Java Challenge which this year will be based at the picturesque Taman Dayu course, just outside Surabaya.

As last year, it will be a 2-day Eclectic Tournament with the option of some social golf on Friday. The date is set for 21-22 September 2019 and with current trophy holder Fernando “El Guapo” Gaggino unable to defend his crown, we are sure to have a new champion this year. Details of the event are here: Second Annual Tee Set East Java Challenge MF and please contact directly to Mark Fiorello at  mark@solidaritas.com if you are interested to attend.

In order to make the event effective we need a minimum of 12 sign-ups and we have a cut-off date to confirm our booking at the end of August. Please sign up asap if you are planning to come. If by next week we have not reached the minimum, we will reschedule the date of the event.
