Sunday 10th November 2019 BSD

The Day

Fresh from attending the Remembrance Sunday service and laying a wreath along with, inter alia, other Society representatives, President & JSAS Chieftain Roger Finnie hot-footed it home to change and head out to BSD to be joined by 32 other Tee Setters.

The course was quiet which meant we got a slightly earlier than scheduled tee off and although a pre-storm wind kicked up around the turn, we were all to finish in good time under bright sunny skies. First groups were back in under 4 hours and all the prize-giving completed around 5pm, leaving plenty of time for many of us to head off to join Axel Hertzke and his family at Casa de la Mexicana for a post round social.

The greens were in great condition and the fairways running fast so some good scores were returned on the day as further mentioned below. No new comers this week but we did welcome back the 2 Hertzke brothers who were out visiting Axel again, Jochen after 196 weeks and Kai after 45 weeks. A warm welcome back also to Kim Pham after 38 weeks.

Thank you to VP Ric Wymer for managing the scoring and reporting on the day and to the BSD team who looked after us to make the visit very enjoyable for all.

The Play

Playing off the White Tees and with the hard fairways, the Treasurer was not expecting any Skirts so he was pleasantly surprised to have a solitary contribution on the day which he able to collect at the after party from our host Axel Hertzke.  No Monster Putter on the day and unfortunately our Most Strokes, Timo Toivonen, had already gone by the prize-giving so no photo to enliven our album. Bill Lloyd took home First Birdie and Kai Hertzke First Sandy whilst Aljosja Van Dorssen and Tan Chee Hua were both happy to share the prize for Most Improved.

Although beaten in a count-back for Low Net A, Mark Johnson was our Low Putter on the day whilst Jeff Landau took home Low Gross. Joseph D’Cruz was out Low Net on the day after a 66 to take home B grade where he was joined by Roger Finnie and Timo Karonen as our other Low Net winners on the day.

Congratulations to all our winners and the results are here: BSD 20191110 Results and photos here.

Next Up: Riverside Sunday 17th November 11.30am shotgun

This Sunday we take the short trip down to Junction 19 on the Jagorawi toll to visit the excellent Riverside course. The Greg Norman designed Riverside is always one of the most interesting challenges on the Tee Set schedule with the Shark’s trademark optical illusions regularly fooling the unwary.

In addition to our weekly schedule, this Sunday sees the final round of the 2019 Jakarta Inter-League season as Tee Set’s team, currently sitting in 2nd place, looks to try and overall haul defending champions and current leaders, Tin Cups. As its the final round, we will follow the game with a prize presentation buffet in the function room upstairs. Food and some beers have been arranged for all players and will be included in the fee collected before play (expected at Rp200k although this may increase slightly depending on the final funds on hand with the JIL committee) but players are welcome to bring other refreshments to wash down the dinner as corkage has been kindly waived for the post-game celebration.

As usual, for those Tee Set players participating in JIL (whether for Tee Set or otherwise), please also sign up as normal for the weekly competition so we can capture you for both events.

To join us for the fun of one of Jakarta’s finest courses on Sunday just sign up here as usual. Green fees of Rp850,000 including a shared cart and some free range balls with a tee time of 11.30pm: please be there before 10.30am as we will have a shot-gun start so it takes a little more time to get bags/players organized and out to the respective holes

Tee Set Championships: Last call – 16 spots remaining!

The 2019 Tee Set Championships will be held on Sunday 24th November 2019 at Matoa Nasional, just 13 days from today!!. As of this morning, we have 96 players signed up already so it will be another bumper event and we expect to have a full field.

If you do not see your name here but feel you have registered already, please contact President Roger Finnie directly. Also, some groups have been requested and or collated based on requests to date – please check the groupings and advise Roger directly if some changes are needed. Election of the President: Nominations close 17th Nov.

The Tee Set President is appointed by a vote of attendees each Championship and serves to the conclusion of the following year’s event. With current President Roger Finnie having served 2 1/2 years already, the Committee are seeking candidates for President for 2019/20.

We would therefore like ask for nominations for the position of President for 2019/20 and also any expressions of interest to join the Committee. Please send your nominations to our master of the electoral process, Keith Miller at:  keith.steuart.miller@gmail.com

Nominations will close 1 week before the Championships (17th November) to enable us to  prepare the necessary voting slips and thank you to Keith for again assisting the Committee in coordinating the nominations and voting.

Finally, and as always, if nominating some-one other than yourself, please ensure the nominee is willing to stand!

Sunday 3rd November Gading Raya

The Day

A thank you to Gading Raya who hosted us at short notice and made their usual strong effort to ensure we had a good day out with arrangements on the course and in the club house going smoothly. The strong turnout of 40 Tee Setters enjoyed a good day out and some excellent scores, both gross and net, were returned. A SNAFU in the administration process means we cannot recover the usual reporting templates but nevertheless we are able to provide some colour on the day as usual.

One newcomer this week with Andy Coop receiving a warm Tee Set welcome. Our welcome backs were all impressive returnees with Mike Taylor, Joe Alchi, Maurice and Pandit Dres all back after about 1 year and Aljosja Van Dorssen after 32 weeks.

The Play

Gading Raya is a friendly, fairly flat course but still with the capability to catch the unwary and our 3-way tie for Most Strokes of 10 between Simon Oxley, Joe Alchi and Frank Wilson pleased the Treasurer after the rather low return of 2 skirts from Joe Alchi and newcomer Andy Coop. A welcome back but clearly not having practiced with the flat stick in between games saw Maurice Dres claim Monster Putter after 47 strokes on the greens. Joe however was able to recover his fine by claiming First Par for Handicaps >=30.

Simon Oxley also recovered his fine with Most Improved, Dave Prosser and Pandit Dres shared First Birdie and Richard Mau scored First Sandy. Aljosja Van Dorssen was our Low Putter on the day after 27 Putts.

Our Low Gross after an excellent 76 went to Jeff Landau. Low Net prizes saw the continued good form of both Anna Wilson and Brett Shields after net 66’s and they were joined by a welcome return to form Mark Johnson who scored a net 69.

Congratulations to all our winners on the day. The A team was back this week to handle proceedings so a big thank you to VP Ric Wymer for taking charge of the day and our secretary Beby for the registrations and scoring as well as catching up with a little backlog of handicap entries. Detailed results as recovered are here: Gading Raya Query_ Results History

Sunday 27th October 2019: Cengkareng

The Day

After last week’s quieter turn-out, this week was a bumper Sunday with 55 Tee Setters arriving to the ever popular Cengkareng course to enjoy an excellent day out. Despite the Jakarta marathon causing some diversions in town, everyone was able to arrive in good time and our 14 groups headed out as scheduled. The course itself was quite busy but after a slightly slow start, we all managed to get round without undue delay with the last groups getting in before the light faded.

Our numbers were boosted by 11 newcomers this week, a mixture of soon to be regulars and visitors with a warm Tee Set welcome to Jon Goddard, Joakim Elmquist, Janson Yong, James Bristow, Hidekazu Sato, David Foong, Carl Lund, Lo Ten Haven, Nathan Farley, Juha Suomi and Anton Rusli.

Some large welcome backs too with Roger Thompson heading the way after 231 weeks; joined by Ian Butcher, Holger Molendyk, Barry Widjaja, Jongchun Kim, Rosie Putri and Arne Tjaden. The only challenge we had fitting everyone in was the formatting of our summary sheet as you will see below… it was a pleasure to see everyone again and no surprise we were last to leave the club house well after 8pm.

Many thanks to VP Ric Wymer for managing the scoring summary and Secretary Beby for the registrations despite not being here this week and to those willing hands on the day: Dave Prosser, Audie Kaunang, Ian Butcher and Santi Miller.

The Play

Some excellent scores returned but as always at Cengkareng there were many fines to keep the Treasurer happy this week too. Monster Putter was shared between Holger Molendyk and Hidekazu Sato whilst Cucu Chandra had a Happy Gilmore moment on hole 5, eventually getting over on the 5th attempt as she secured Most Strokes by quite some way. However, equally impressive was the return on skirts with Bill Lloyd, Dan Javier, Don Duttlinger, Ian Butcher, Jari Antikainen, Oliver Fritz, Roger Thompson, Tapio Jarvenpaa, Matthew Makarenko and Timo Karonen all getting honorable mentions in dispatches.

With Oliver having departed, Matthew Makarenko was to recover his fine with Most Improved whilst the ladies cleaned up on our “1st” awards, Santi Miller for 1st Sandy and Aurelie Neufkens for 1st Birdie – both on the First!. Low Putts went to newcomer David Foong.

Low Gross went to Carl Lund for his excellent 79 off the stick whilst our Long Drive prizes were taken home by Cucu Chandra and James Bristow. Not quite defending his monthly medal, Tom Grace did not go home empty handed as he took out the Nearest the Pin prize. Before the main prizes were awarded, we also took the opportunity to reunite Jari Antikainen with his Match Play winners trophy from 2017… last in his possession at the 2017 championship party and a very good example of why the event should not be missed…. sign-ups below for 2019…..

Our monthly medal was a very close run competition with a 3-way tie on 42 points. Jochen Overberg and Exra Alexander were the unfortunate runner-ups having to be content with Low Net C & B where they were joined by Arne Tjaden as Mark Fiorello had already had to depart. Winning the count-back and taking home the Monthly Medal after 25 points on the back 9 was Anna Wilson.

Congratulations to all our winner and the detailed results are here: Form_ Current Results Cengkareng 271019

Next Up Cengkareng Sunday 27th October 2019

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2019.

In addition to being the 10th Monthly Medal of 2019, this week will also be the 3rd round of Cycle XI of the Tee Set Eclectic. With Cycle X winner, Matthew Powell, having departed Jakarta, we will definitely have a new winner: will it be another new name on the Trophy or will one of our past Champions rise to the occasion again.?

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp850,000 walking please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng has available a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts

Sunday 20th October 2019 Jagorawi

The Day

Presidential Inauguration or Bali Classic or Rugby World Cup quarter finals or end of school holidays or just one of those odd week-ends …. for what ever reason we had a quiet and very relaxing visit to Jagorawi on our first visit since last November’s JIL end of season party.

Traffic on the toll road moved smoothly in the morning enabling everyone to be at the course in good time for us to head out under a clear and sunny sky for our advanced tee time. The course too was relatively quiet and so we were round in under 4 hours despite the challenging nature of the New Course. Taking advantage of this, the prize giving was all done and dusted before 5pm so we could enjoy the equally trouble-free trip home; many of us getting back in well under an hour!.

All in all a pleasurably day out for the 17 Tee Setters who joined us.

No newcomers this week and our longest welcome back was 8 weeks for Brett Shields who was to enjoy a very good round as can be seen below. A bon voyage to Michal Lubasik who is departing for several months and we hope to see you back sometime soon.

A thank you to the Jagorawi team who looked after us so well on the day and to VP Ric Wymer for managing all the scoring.

The Play

With the course running fast and reports that the greens were very smooth after being baked in the sun, we were expecting a collection of potential fines but whilst the scores were generally high, our sole fines on the day were Micheal Mueller for his Most Strokes and our skirt Dan Javier. Most Improved was Frank Wilson whilst keeping the family equilibrium was our First Birdie, Anna Wilson.

Low Putts went to Mick Mongold and First Sandy was shared between Andrew Shaw and Jari Antikainen. Low Gross on the day was Roger Finnie.

Our Low Net on the day went Brett Shields for his excellent round of net 66 and who was joined by Joseph D’Cruz and Shawn Berg.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Form_ Current Results Jags 201019

Next Up: Jagorawi Sunday 20th October 2019

With JIL having moved to Riverside this season, we have not had a visit to Jagorawi in recent months. This week we get to change this and look forward to playing the excellent but tricky golfing challenge of the New Course where you really need to think through many of your shots, particularly off the tee.

Tee time is 12.30pm officially but we are expecting to get off a little earlier and possibly with a shot-gun start so we ask all of you to be at the course before 12pm please.

We will play white tees this week for men and if you are interested to join us please sign up here. Price is Rp950k with carts.

Sunday 13th October 2019

The Day

Sunday was the second of our rearranged weeks this month and the value of signing up early and reading carefully the Tee Set blogs was demonstrated by some plaintive cries from Riverside where a couple of our members had headed in error only to find we were not there this week. Nevertheless, 29 Tee Setters turned up at Gading Raya to enjoy a relaxed round and were well looked after as usual by the team there.

Overall the course was in good nick, especially the greens where some of our fringe dwellers were to enjoy a good day with their putting stats! Kudos to Richard Mau who joined us after a morning round and thank you Mike Webb & Shawn Berg who brought along a couple of newcomers and help sell some Tee Set shirts. Thank you also to Bill LLoyd and Geoff Thwaites who coordinated to help us supply a left handed set of clubs to one of our newcomers.

4 newcomers this week and a warm Tee Set welcome to Jay Kim, Djamel Derguini, Markus Karonen and Matthew Makarenko.  Back for their annual visit and therefore 50 weeks between rounds were Anna and Frank Wilson and we had another warm welcome back to Cory Packard after 20 weeks.

Many thanks to Jens Roestel and Lis Wymer for assisting VP Ric Wymer with the scoring and presentations. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

With the greens in good condition there was no Monster Putter on the day but despite the fast fairways, a couple of players did manage to pull up on their drives before the red tees meaning we welcomed Mike Webb and Cory Packard up for the Skirt photo. Cory did get his revenge with an eagle on his 1oth hole whilst the Treasurer had a field day with a 4-way tie for Most Strokes of 9 shared between Albert Arcenas, Zander Watt, Arnold Castillon and Bill Lloyd.

First Par for Handicaps =>30 went to Timo Karonen, whilst Ezra Alexander was our Most Improved and newcomer, Djamel Derguini won First Sandy. First Birdie went to Marcelo De Jesus.

Paul Daud took home Low Putts whilst our Low Gross was the returning Frank Wilson with an excellent 82 off the stick. Low Net winners saw Michal Lubasik up for the second week in a row where he was joined by Jens Roestel and Jochen Overberg.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Gading Raya Results131019
