Sunday 16th September 2018: Padang Modern

The Day

After a couple of visits which were cancelled due to competing events at the course, Sunday saw us return to Padang Modern where we were welcomed and well looked after as usual. A modest group of 27 players on the day with no new comers and only one welcome back of note to Jochen Overberg who joined us after almost 6 months.

Bright skies, a light wind and getting off on time at 12pm saw us round relatively quickly and able to complete the presentations well before dark. This left us plenty of time to talk through the round over some refreshments and still get home in good time.

Registrations and scoring were again ably managed by VP Ric Wymer so a thank you to Ric for helping make the day go smoothly. Pictures of the day can be found here.

The Play

With small greens, running hard and fast, making it hard to keep the ball on the green and not overly challenging Blue Tee boxes in play, the treasurer had to be content with only 1 fine on the day with Rudie Basson breaking a potential 5 way tie for Most Strokes to win the Monkey for his 10 on a hole. Most Improved went to Rosie Putri who came back 8 strokes improved on her outward 9 and our First (& only) Sandy recorded on the day went to Joshua Alexander.

Low Putts went to Simon Oxley for his return of 26 strokes on the greens and First Birdie to Chris Lever for his effort on hole 5. Low Gross on the day went to Jeff Landau for his 79 off the stick.

With our Low Net winners delayed in the showers, we had to capture them later on with Lorenzo Marengo (Low B net 73) and Mike Harling (Low C net 72) reappearing in time for the presentations. Low Net A after a net 72 Richard Mau had already departed due to another engagement.

World Cup of Golf 6th & 7th October 2018: Cengkareng

2018’s edition of the Tee Set World Cup of Golf will take place at Cengkareng on 6th and 7th October 2018. Following feedback from many of the participants, we have made the event over 1 week-end and will be playing on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

As usual, Teams will be made up of 4 players who will be connected by their nationalities and we hope to see many teams out there hoping to wrestle the trophy off the Indonesian ladies who have won it for the last 2 years.

Please get together and start to form your teams as we will open registrations later this week.

Geoff Thwaites, Tee Set’s former President and current sponsor, will be turning 75 years old on Sunday 23rd September. Showing us all that age is just a number, Geoff will be bringing all of his 50 years of golfing experience in Indonesia to bear as he competes for Tee Set in the Inter-League match before celebrating with all of us by hosting the Bandung Band and a light BBQ at Jagorawi from 3pm. He invites all Tee Setters and Inter-League players from the other teams to come hand help share a trip down memory lane and also toast his landmark birthday. Feel free to bring a bottle to help oil the afternoon!

With DOGs playing also on Sunday near-by, we hope some will be able to stop off on the way home since the party is not likely to finish early 🙂

 

On the golfing side, following the summer break, Sunday sees us take the short trip down the Jagorawi Toll as we return for our fourth visit of the year to Jagorawi Golf & Country Club. JGCC is an excellent test of golf and always in great condition.

Sunday’s event is open to all Tee Set players and we will select the Inter-League team from those who have signed up to play on Sunday. JIL Tee Set Team members who have confirmed their availability are therefore requested to also sign up as usual and please bring your Green Tee Set shirt for playing in.

Start time is 9.30am as usual for the Interleague week-end and we will have a shot-gun start so please be at the course and registered for around 8.30am so we can allocate holes and groups in time to get out at 9.15am for the start.

Sunday 9th September 2018 Imperial Golf Klub

The Day

With the Tee Set Committee reverting to the previous practice of preparing sign-ups and cards on a Friday evening, the recent habit of many Tee Setters to sign up late was to create some scrambling as we ran out of the extra blank scoring cards and the course needed to push back another group to allow our extra flights beyond those advised based on the sign-ups.

However, Tee Set is nothing but accommodating and welcoming to all who turn-up and with the course also helping out the VP in sorting out the extra tee times with the main group, we got everybody out and round without any issues.

No eagles, a few birdies and plenty of geese on the course to keep us company as we enjoyed a perfect golfing day under blue skies, a far cry from the previous Sunday at Riverside.

One newcomer today, Rennie Putri who was given a warm Tee Set welcome and a couple of notable welcome backs with Geary Bowles joining us after 80 weeks and Tim Knight after 50 weeks. We hope to see you all back soon.

In the absence of the President, VP Ric Wymer took the reins and was ably assisted by Mark Johnson, Rennie Putri and Santi Miller to ensure the registrations and prize giving went as smoothly as possible. Many thanks to them all and to Beby who ensured we could all play off our updated handicaps after updating a months worth of cards. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

 

No shortage of fines this week with 6 players tied for Most Strokes and 6 enjoying the thrill of searching through the Tee Set dress up bag for their Skirt photo. Although some cards were missing, the recorded Most Strokes was shared between Bill Bigelow, Detlef Blumke, Laurie O’Connor, Matt McGowan, Ric Wymer and Rosie Putri whilst our skirt “winners” were Detlef, Ian Butcher, Jongchun Kim, Richard Green, Dirk Kruip and Simon Oxley. Less crowded was the Monster Putter leaderboard with Hana Ariestya out on top with her 42 strokes on the greens.

Richard Green won his money back with Most Improved of 7 whilst Laurie O’Connor was also in the black again after taking the money from a 4 way tie of Low Putts on 30 also including Don Duttlinger, Ric Wymer and Mark Fiorello. First Birdie went to Gary Mond for his effort on hole 5.

First Sandy on Hole 1 was shared between Andrew Waite and Santi Miller whilst Jeff Landau took home Low Gross after his round of 80.

Low Gross Winners on the day in the respective grades were Ken Runyon (70), VP Ric Wymer (68) and Dirk Kruip (77). Ken’s alter ego Mark Johnson collecting his prize as we had a snafu in managing the late registrations … another good reason to sign up early; we trust Mark and Ken will work out the prize giving side between them on a future week.

Tee Set Match-Play

Our first semi-final was completed on Sunday with Jens Roestel and Matthew Powell enjoying a very close match in which no less than 12 holes were halved. In the end Jens won the 18th hole and the match 1up to go through from the Kuning bracket to face the Emas winner for the Ric Wymer Match Play Trophy. Santi Miller and Matt Otto will play out the Emas bracket match in a couple of weeks so we will then know our 2 finalists.

Sunday sees us return to our local klub with a K, Imperial, for our 4th visit of the year.

Imperial’s layout is always a strong golfing challenge and the Club House has excellent views over the course to enjoy along with the good service and your chosen refreshment.

Tee time is 11.55 a.m. and the price Rp950,000 with carts.

Sunday 2nd September 2018: Riverside

A great Day, ultimately a wash out

Riverside is one of our popular courses, which tests all of the Tee Set community and does not give up a good score easily. This Sunday saw 32 Tee Setters take the short trip down the Jagorawi Toll to test their skills against the tricky Greg Norman layout and enjoy a fun day in team pairs as we tried out a new event format of Russian Stableford.

16 teams were paired up and organized for our 4 hole shot-gun start, kindly organized by the Riverside GM Peng Siong, who also joined us for the day. After an explanation on the scoring rules we all headed out under bright sunny skies to tackle the course.

Amongst the early movers were President Roger Finnie and partner Len Ogembo who scored a birdie and par on a stroke hole which also was their first Russian scoring hole for 12 points. However by the time we made the turn, Lis Wymer, taking style lessons from playing partner, GM Peng Siong, were tearing up the course on the back of Lis’ 43 outward half to register an impressive 45 points.

Sadly for all of us, this is when the heavens opened and we were forced to seek shelter from the “Mother of All Storms” which descended rapidly over the course. With very high winds and laterally driven rain, the course suffered extensive damage as several trees fell across the course and cart paths. This made the course unplayable and so play was abandoned for the day.

 Whist the course maintenance crew cleared the roads of fallen trees so we could go home, we showered and headed to the bar where, in lieu of prizes, we enjoyed a couple of rounds of our sponsors product which happened (!) to be on special for our visit.

Naturally this led to plenty of banter and despite no prize giving, the Tee Set outfits made their customary appearance to the amusement of those who stayed. Best dressed went to Rosie and Arne…

We have been promised a reduced rate for our next visit in lieu of the rain check and details of this will be provided as soon as they are confirmed with Riverside’s management. Naturally the ride home was a little wet but all made it safely back.

Next Up Riverside 12pm Sunday 2nd September 2018

RiversideThe Greg Norman designed Riverside is always one of the most interesting challenges on the Tee Set schedule with the Shark’s trademark optical illusions regularly fooling the unwary.

This week we will be mixing up the format of our games by holding a Russian Stableford event. Played in 2 man teams, your stableford scores will be counted together for a team score but with a twist. Whilst on 12 holes your two scores will be added together, on holes 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 they will be multiplied together to give us that Russian twist….. ie., if your team scores on a hole are 2 points and 4 points you will score a team 6 points (2+4) on the regular holes whilst on the special holes above your team will get 8 points (2*4). Obviously a player scoring 0 on those special holes will wipe the team score as 0 times anything is still 0! Prizes for the best 3 teams will be awarded on the day.

Find yourself a partner and come and join in the fun – tell us in the comments section who your partner is. Don’t have a partner?; still come along and we will pair you up on the day. Confused about the scoring? President Roger Finnie will manage all the queries on the day.

Sunday 26th August 2018 Cengakreng Monthly Medal and Eclectic IX Rd. 1

The Day

A relatively quiet day at the end of a 3-day week-end festival of golf which saw the most adventurous of our group play 81 holes of golf after walking the 45-Holes Asian Tigers event hosted by VP Bill Lloyd on Friday and participating in the Thompson Cup on Saturday before coming back to Cengkareng the next day for a gentle 18 holes as we held our regular monthly medal. A couple of weary bodies beforehand but otherwise a great spirit and much joviality around the club-house as we sorted out registrations with President Roger Finnie still in his Scotland kit from the previous day….

With The D.O.G.S. also having their event on Sunday this week, a smaller than usual turnout of 34 players (the data-base missing 1 card not turned in) enjoyed a another fantastic golfing day with the course in great condition and the sunshine and friendly caddies & staff at Cengkareng keeping us all happy.

    

2 newcomers on the day and a warm Tee Set welcome was given to John Dotch and Prabhu who joined us for the first time. We also welcomed back the Gaisler family after 14 weeks which gave us the opportunity to finally present Jana with her Monthly Medal from April 2018.

Lots of good stories on the day to share in the clubhouse afterwards including a “Barnes Wallace” effort from Joshua Alexander who managed to skip his iron shot twice across the lake on hole 5 and see it pop out the other end.

We also enjoyed sharing Audie’s Hole in One success from last week with the jugs of beer he kindly purchased for us all to consume after the round.

In the continuing absence of our secretarial assistance, a big thank you to Pascal Bekaert who ensured we got plenty of quality pictures this week and to VP Ric Wymer who again stepped up to manage the scoring on the day. The many photos of the day can be found here.

The Play

As usual, Cengkareng proved a very competitive course for our monthly medal with many good scores at or just under net par providing the scorer with a small headache as he sorted out the several count-backs needed to resolve the winners as well as determine the owners of a couple of cards which were turned in without their names on them!.

Of less debate were the fines with newcomer Prabhu being joined by skirt regular Pascal Bekaert and Jaroslav Gaisler for a delve into the Tee Set dress up bag. Still wearing her April monthly medal, Jana Gaislerova was called up to be photographed with the Monkey for her Monster Putter effort of 40 strokes on the greens; Eric Park having gone home as had our Most Strokes “winner” Michael Reading who had 13 on a hole.

Unusually for Cengkareng, First Birdie held out until hole 7 where 4 players all finally scored one with Ian Butcher and Amol Singhal remaining to collect their prize. Most Improved was awarded to Geoff Thwaites who got to grips with his golf game in the back nine to improve by 10 strokes whilst playing partners Joshua Alexander and Roger Finnie followed each other in on hole 4 to share First Sandy. Audie Kaunang showed that even if he cannot get a hole in one every week, his putter was in fine form too as he took home Low Putts with 28 strokes on the green.

Daniel Gaisler won Low Net A on a 4 way count-back of the players on net 72’s and Efsi Hayati Low Net B after her best net of the day 67. Low Gross went to Len Ogembo after another count-back on 82 gross.

On the monthly skill prizes, Nearest the Pin was won by Gary Mond and Long Drives by Santi Miller and Amol Singhal. The big winner on the day and finally the holder of a Monthly Medal was Pascal “Pastis” Bekaert who scored 41 points and prevailed on a count-back from Efsi Hayati who had to be content with a runners-up spot for a second month in a row.

Pascal was a very happy gentleman and in addition to posing for the Monthly Medal award, he came back and had a second photo to reflect all his winnings on the day having also got a skirt and been the only >=30 handicapper thus securing those prizes too…. but for the one prize rule of course…

Tee Set Match-Play

Sunday was also the last day of the bracket semi-final round for the Tee Match Play and we had our final 2 matches played out.

In the Emas bracket, Santi Miller beat Wina Nugraha 4&3 whilst in the Kuning bracket Matthew Powell beat Geoff Thwaites 5&4. Both progress to the bracket finals where they will face Matt Otto and Jens Roestel, respectively. The matches are due to be completed by 30th September.

Ivan Byriel

Dear Tee Setters,

A short post to share that the funeral procession for Ivan will depart MRCCC today at 11am to head to Pondok Ranggon in Cibubur, JLRaya Tpu Pondok Ranggon. The funeral will commence at 1pm.

Thereafter there will be a wake at Jimm’s Bar in Bellagio Mall, Mega-Kuningan from 6pm.

All are welcome to attend either or both events

Ivan Byriel

In celebration of the life of Ivan Byriel, a quiet gathering of his friends and colleagues to honour his memory will be held at Brass Bar in Bellagio Mall, Kuningan.

Time is 7pm, today Thursday 23rd August, with a few words being shared around 9pm followed by a small voluntary collection which will be passed onto his family afterwards. If you can make it, all are welcome.

Being the last week-end of the month, this Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s 2018’s Monthly Medal.

Thanks to the sponsorship of Ken Runyon and his teams at Accel Golf and Golf & Special Events Management we will recognizing the Low Gross and Low A, B & C winners with a trophy in addition to presentation of the Monthly Medal to the overall winner.

This week will also be the first  round of Cycle IX of the Tee Set Eclectic and an opportunity for you to down a first marker in the hope to wrestle the trophy from current holder, Amol Singhal.

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.

Sunday 19th August 2018 BSD and post match social event

The Day

What was otherwise an excellent day was tinged with the sadness of Ivan Byriel’s passing on Sunday. A tribute to Ivan follows below and he was given a warm toast at our prize giving after the round.

With BSD preparing for a major event next week, the reports on the course were very positive and the 49 Tee Setters and guests who attended (we lost a 4 ball who arrived late and failed to register!) were treated to a great day of golf with the course in superb condition and weather equally accommodating with bright skies and a gentle breeze.

This week saw us welcome 4 newcomers and a warm Tee Set welcome was given to Andile Keta, Isabelle, Sukkuriya Masri and David Prosser. Notable welcome backs to Koen Verheyen (246 weeks) and Shaun China (65 weeks) with Dennis Kloeth, Dan McNally and Nick Shearman all getting honourable mentions. We look forward to seeing you out again soon with Tee Set.

Sadly just about the only thing not working well on the day was the camera (operator error suspected!! but with this becoming a recurring theme it may be time to look at the camera?) so we have few pictures of the day or newcomers – Andile being captured by the President early on in the day and Isabelle was a staring support when the scores were being entered and captured below. Those we have are here.

With us playing off the white tees, the scores reflected the excellent conditions and many rounds at or under net handicap were recorded on the day. As planned, after a couple of beers at the club house, we retired to Casa De La Mexicana again to continue the post round celebrations. With everyone having a good time, entering the scoring was done late so apologies to a few prize winners who left early.

Thank  you to VP Ric Wymer for again doing the scoring and prize giving in the absence of our Secretary, ably assisted by Isabelle and kept refreshed by Shaun China. Thank you also to our hosts at Casa De La Mexicana, especially Sahara, who were kept busy answering the many food and drink requests from the 29 Tee Setters who joined the evening.

The Play

High-light of the day and somehow not also recorded as our first and only Eagle, was the Hole in One scored by Audie Kaunang. Audie fortunately had invested in the hole in one voucher and was able to collect his winnings after the round to enjoy. Congratulations Audie.

With the Tee Set bag not making it to the restaurant, our skirt winners were for once spared the glory of their photo but still captured above were John Suermondt, Koen Verheyen, Matt Otto and Mel Cantarella. Also spared the Monkey photos were Brett Shields for his 12 on the opening hole (perhaps unsurprisingly since he made the ultimate effort to come from Matoa after finding his game was cancelled to join us with 5 minutes to spare) and newcomer Isabelle who had 46 putts for Monster Putter.

First Sandy went to newcomer Andile Keta on hole 3 whilst not for the first time this year, Andrew Waite took First Birdie on hole 1 along with Lorenzo Marengo. President Roger Finnie had equal Low Putts with 29 to collect that prize whilst Detlef Blumke was our Most Improved coming home a lucky 13 better than going out.

Jeff Landau had a good day on the greens as well in turning in our Best Gross of the day after an excellent 76 off the stick. In the Best Net category, Matt Otto had a net 73 to take home C Grade whilst Ken Runyon won A Grade on a count-back from Ian Butcher with a net 68. However, net king of the day was VP Ric Wymer who enjoyed an excellent day shooting net 64 to win B Grade.

One match-play was completed with Matt Otto beating Matthew Cherrett 2 Up to move into the semi-finals. The remaining 2 matches in this round will be completed at Cengkareng.

Ivan Byriel R.I.P.

On Sunday we were saddened to hear the news of Ivan’s passing whilst travelling in Timor Leste just one week after joining us for Tee Set’s 35th Anniversary Event; this picture coming from that event.

After completing his qualifications in Queensland, Australia, Ivan began a career in Oil & Gas which lasted for well over 40 years. This career saw him spend time in PNG and Equador but was very much focused on Indonesia where he worked in a number of roles specializing around seismic survey work.

His work in Oil & Gas no doubt drew Ivan into Tee Set where he was an active participant for many years. Although some recent health issues had reduced his playing time with us, Ivan always recognized the importance of the many Charity golf events here in Jakarta and could be relied upon to join up when-ever time and health permitted.

A straight talker, Ivan would always light up his group and foursome each week and you could see that twinkle in his eyes which gave you an inkling of perhaps a country larakin in his history. Ivan will be sadly missed by all of us in the Jakarta golf community who got to know him as well as his family on whom he doted.

Our condolences to all of Ivan’s family here and in Australia.

Being the last week-end of the month, this Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s 2018’s Monthly Medal.

Thanks to the sponsorship of Ken Runyon and his teams at Accel Golf and Golf & Special Events Management we will recognizing the Low Gross and Low A, B & C winners with a trophy in addition to presentation of the Monthly Medal to the overall winner.

This week will also be the first  round of Cycle IX of the Tee Set Eclectic and an opportunity for you to down a first marker in the hope to wrestle the trophy from current holder, Amol Singhal.

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

News Flash: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng management have recently purchased 8 golf carts. These are priced at Rp55ok a cart so if you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengakreng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.
