Sunday 1st July 2018: Imperial Golf Klub

The Day

Another healthy turnout of Tee Setters this week with 41 players (Ed: one missing from our database for those checking….) heading west on the Tangerang Toll to take on the challenging, and occasionally querky, Imperial Golf Klub. We have had previous challenges on getting out on time at Imperial and we arrived to find our tee time pushed back to enable(!) a couple of competitions to head out in front of us; however some astute negotiations with the starter ensured we headed out on time and with little hold up as the competitions were sent out to holes elsewhere on the course since it was fortunately not busy.

With the course playing well, albeit with the green as usual fast and tricky, and the weather perfect for golf, we were to get round in very quick time. The first groups were finished and showered before 4.30pm and everyone was able to enjoy some food and refreshments whilst the scores were being processed. Certainly the Giant Burger was the meal of choice with no less than 12 counted on the tables at one point.

3 new-comers this week and a warm Tee Set welcome was given to Rosa Wina, Banphot Wongvisavakorn and Garry Dick. Only one welcome back of worthy note (for its length of time!) with Michael Bartsch joining us again after 22 weeks. Photos of Rosa and Garry are hereafter with Banphot taking a staring role in the presentations below.

With our Secretaries unavailable this week, VP Ric Wymer again showed his mastery of the tee set database and scoring program to manage all the registrations and results on the day; suitably kept refreshed by the President and Singing President. Many thanks to Ric for all his efforts and who certainly was living up to his moniker of VP of Almost Everything.:-). Fortunately, he was still able to  get out to enjoy his round thanks to everyone being on time in the morning. Our one draw back was not getting a lot of photos but those we did capture are here.

The Play

With some players taking advantage of the early finish to head out quickly, the prize giving itself was fairly short this week. Also helping was new comer Banphot Wongvisavakorn getting the trifecta of booby prizes  for his skirt, Most Strokes of 12 on a hole and Monster Putter for his 44 strokes on the greens. “Joining” Banphot  in securing a skirt on the day was VP Ric Wymer but, not to steal Banphot’s glory, Ric had a separate photo taken for the annals of Tee Set. Most Improved was Wina Nugraha whose back 9 was 8 shots better than the front.

Another week with the skill prizes of First Birdie and First Sandy being secured on hole 1 with Matt McGowan taking the latter and Andrew Waite the former. Taking out the 2 players with other prizes, we were still left with a 3 way tie for Low Putts with a count-back finally determining that President Roger Finnie would take home the prize.

After some recent near misses with D.O.G.S. and Tee Set, Glen Sutherland decided not to rely on a count-back this week and shot a fantastic 77 to be our clear winner of Low Gross. With only 1 C Grade player with a handicap on the day Mike Harling was always going to be a winner but unfortunately did not hang around for the prize giving. The battle for Low Net A and B was a much closer affair with VP Bill Lloyd securing B Grade after his net 70 and Marcelo de Jesus A Grade with his best of the day net 69.

Congratulations to all our winners on the day and the detailed results can be found here.

Tee Set Match Play

2 games in the second knock-out round were completed on Sunday with both going down the 18th hole with all the play for. In a game which saw both players hold multiple hole leads, Jens Roestel stayed steadiest at the moment of truth to sneak passed Divya Ahuja 1 up. In the other game, 18 holes were not sufficient to settle the match so Santi Miller and Laurie O’Connor went down the 1st hole again on which Santi prevailed to also win 1 up.

Congratulations to Santi and Jens who join Roger Finnie and Geoff Thwaites in the bracket semi-finals.  This just leaves 4 matches to be completed in this round and reminder to the 8 players involved that the round must be completed by 29th July.

Next Up: BSD Sunday 8th July 2018 @ 12.30pm

Post event social at De La Mexicana

Next Sunday sees us return to ever popular and excellent Bumi Serpong Damai course.

We have a 12.30 start off 2 tees and the price has been held at the same rate as in 2017 at Rp999k including cart. If you wish to join us please sign up here.

For the post match presentations, and to enjoy a social evening together, we will be decamping from BSD to De la Mexicana which is run by the family of Tee Setter Axel Hertzke and is located only 5 minutes from the golf course. Details of the evening’s arrangements will be sent out on Thursday and BYO will be fine for those who wish to imbibe. Sunday 24th June 2018: Cengkareng Monthly Medal and Eclectic VIII Rd3

Not yet the formal European summer holidays, first full week back after Lebaran or just the attractions of a round at one of the best run clubs in Jakarta? What ever the reason, an almost full field of 61 players turned out on Sunday for our June Monthly medal and Round 3 of Eclectic VIII to be welcomed by a bright sunny day and a gentle breeze making the golfing conditions ideal for a great afternoon of golf.

It appeared that the attractions which helped swell our numbers to our best turnout in 2018 also were attracting other golfers to Cengkareng this week. We were informed there was a full field ahead of us and a shortage of caddies (no doubt some still on holiday too) and carts which meant we were a little late teeing off and the final groups struggled to complete there round before darkness fell completely…. apologies to those at the back of the field but everyone seemed to have a good time regardless.

Joining us this week were a very healthy 9 newcomers and a very warm Tee Set welcome to Werner Leten, Weera Limiirakaiorn, Raymond Lee, Miller Vinson, Michael Reading, Maspiyono, James Yaworski, Glen Sutherland and Esko Jaalinoia. Welcome backs were headed by Dave Collecott after an impressive 191 weeks and Dia Meta Sari after 36 weeks. We look forward to seeing you all again shortly.

Also welcomed back was our Secretary Brenda Mayland and thank you Brenda for all the sterling work to manage all of those turning out on the day and catching up with the pending photos and admin from earlier weeks. All the photos can be found here as usual.

Although we welcomed many new faces it is a fact of Jakarta life there are a few leavers too and Sunday we took the opportunity to thank 2 of our good supporters over recent years in Pekka Kivioja and Steve Moruzzi who were playing their last rounds with Tee Set before heading to pastures new. Bon Voyage gentlemen and we look forward to welcoming you back should your paths cross Jakarta again.

Thanks also to VP Ric Wymer for again looking after the prize giving as President Roger Finnie headed off early due to other commitments – not linked to the football but which did drag a few others away early as well!

The Play

Long carries to the Red tees and tricky greens at Cengkareng always mean a healthy set of fines but given the high turnout our harvest of only 7 skirts was a lower return than some previous months. Nevertheless Axel Hertzke, David Baglivo, Detlef Blumke, Dirk Kruip, Fran Heuken, Matthew Cherrett and Rudie Basson were all invited for the skirt photo. Detlef also stayed for his Monster Putting of 47 strokes on the greens breaking the 4 way tie for second place albeit being saved from a further fine under the one fine rule. Several contenders also for Most Strokes with new comer Weera Limiirakaiorn coming out highest with his 12 strokes on a hole.

Pekka Kivioja in his last round managed to snag a final prize winning First Par for Handicaps >=30 on hole 2. Most Improved was jointly awarded to Andrew Shaw and, recovering his fine, Detlef Blumke for coming home 11 strokes better than they went out. Showing he was a little better at the business end of the hole and winning back his skirt fine was Low Putter on the day Rudie Basson, who need only 27 putts on the day.

2 Eagles again this week, this time scored by Manfred Borer  and Santi Miller who were both recognized for their efforts on holes 11 and 14, respectively. First Sandy and First Birdie both went at Hole 1 with Joshua Alexander winning First Sandy and Arne Tjaden being there to collect his prize for First Birdie.

Low Gross went to Fitrat Ameer who beat new comer Glen Sutherland on a count-back after both shot rounds of 80. Low Net prizes were presented by our sponsor Ken Runyon with Efsi Hayati taking how Low Net A (70), Ronald Dimaculangan Low Net B (69) and Mick Dodsworth Low Net C (71)

On the monthly skill prizes, nearest the pin was taken by Dia Meta Sari who got the ball to an impressive 3cm from the cup whilst our long drivers of the day were Wina Nguhara and Axel Hertzke who hit and impressive 151m and 242m, respectively. Our main winner on the day, continuing his good recent form, was Amol Singhal who shot an excellent 81 gross for 42 points to take home the Monthly Medal and add his name to the roll of honour on the shield.

Congratulations to all our winners and the results of the day are here.

Tee Set Match-Play

Sunday was the last day of the first knock out round and Laurie O’Connor outlasted Ken Runyon 1up to progress and join all the other winners in the next round. To all the winners, please check out the web-site later this week to see your opponents as there are 5 weeks only scheduled for the second knock-out round matches.

Sunday 17th June 2018: Rainbow Hills

The Day

Falling on the week-end at the end of Ramadan it was to expected that our turnout this week would be a little lighter than normal and so it was pleasing to see 26 Tee Setters head down to Rainbow Hills for the final week-end in our Bogor trilogy this month. Whilst traffic on the toll was as light as expected, the final drive to the Club House passes through a number of villages and so those coming a little later were to encounter large families on single motor bikes making passing precarious and delaying arrival for some.

Usually it is a time for greens to be cored but we also faced the added experience of the Club House being under renovation as well; just as well we not in larger numbers as we took up almost all of the available seating on the deck outside the Pro Shop.

A warm Tee Set welcome to our 2 newcomers this week: Rob Mauer and Bernard Chevalier. We also had many welcome backs including Patrick Wasler, Cucu Chandra and Juju Juhairiah who all had more than 20 weeks since their last Tee Set outing. We hope to see you all again soon.

As always the staff and caddies were very friendly which along with the fine weather, made for a pleasant round although some of the caddies were clearly being blooded over the holiday thus giving several of us the opportunity to practice reading our own putts. A straw poll of those present led to a decision to play the more picturesque Forest/Mountain combination but those not able to keep it straight to avoid the penal rough and/or get to grips with the very undulating greens were quickly running up some large scores.

With no Secretary present for the day and with VP Ric Wymer one of those grappling with the motor-bikes in the road, Mark Johnson and Laurie O’Connor kindly took over the organization of the registrations and flights so a thank you to them and Ric who did all the scoring at the end of the round having now mastered the database so we have a back up to the back ups!. Photos of the day can be found here.

The Play

As last week, we had the trifecta of booby prizes, albeit with only one fine, with new comer Bernard Chevalier making sure we had plenty of photos of him for the Tee Set gallery. This week however there was more company with Juju Jujairiah and Rob Nicholls joining him for Most Strokes (11) and Pekka Kivioja, Rob Nicholls again and William Daniel all joining for the skirt photo. Despite Rob and Pekka trying hard, Bernard was the sole honouree of the Monkey for his 44 putt efforts.

Both Rob and Juju were able to recover their fines however, for First Par for Handicaps >=30 (hole 3) and Most Improved (14), respectively. First Birdie went to Tom Grace for his effort on hole 2 whilst Geoff Thwaites was our green master of the day for his low putts of 30.

Low Net honours went to Mark Johnson in A Grade (76), Manfred Borer in B Grade for his best net of the day 66 after a best gross of 83 and to Pekka Kivioja in C Grade for his net 70. David Baglivo was awarded our Low Gross for his 86 after coming home in 39 but somehow the presentation was not made before wrapping up – David please see VP Ric next week to collect your prize.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed scores can be found here.

Sunday 10th June 2018: Emeralda Golf Course

The DayBelieved to be an inaugural visit (and if not only after many years) thanks to the holiday special offered to us, the beautiful and highly rated layout at Emeralda was expected to be a big hit with those Tee Setters able to join us last Sunday. So it was to prove with 36 Tee Setters making the short trip down the Jagorawi Toll to tackle the course designed by Jack Niclaus and Arnold Palmer and having a wonderful day on the course and afterwards.

With positive feedback from those playing and better access thanks to Rina joining their marketing team, your Committee are looking to add another visit to Emeralda before the end of the year if we can coordinate it with the course management – something which has stalled earlier efforts to get a regular game there. Watch this space….

5 newcomers on the day and a big Tee Set welcome to Richard D’Cruz, Len Ogembo, Sangyup Song,  Bumyong Song and Andrew Lee. It was also a pleasure to welcome back Franz Heuken for his 2nd outing and host of other Tee Setters back after a few weeks elsewhere. we look forward to welcoming you all at a future event shortly.

Also making a debut was the newly minted home brew of Richard Bolton and Ken Runyon which along with the kind sponsorship of Detlef Blumke ensured we had plenty of refreshments to give the departing Tony Howarth a warm and boisterous send off. Tony has been a good supporter of Tee Set events over the last 2 1/2 years, both as a player and in making sure our events were well stocked with refreshments for the after party. We wish Tony and his family well on the next step of their journey and Tony is expected back for a visit around the Championship if the rumours are true.

With the President still on holiday in sunny Scotland and our Secretaries busy for holiday season, VP Ric Wymer was left holding the fort and a big thank you to Ric for managing the day smoothly and getting all the results out.

The Play

A bit like the famed London buses, you wait all year and then not 1, not 2 but 3 eagles come along all on one day. After only 1 eagle all of last year, we had 2 on one hole, in the match-play no less, with Craig Ewers and Matthew Powell halving hole 3 in eagles. Matthew was to record a second eagle on the way to his fantastic gross 74, net 60 and a 2Up victory over the Singing President. Congratulations to Matthew who took home Low Gross as well as they shared the prize for first eagle – a rare exception to one prize rule Matt!.

A high slope rating of 140 was expected to capture a few Tee Setters and so it was to prove with the returning Franz Heuken securing the trifecta of booby prizes if only 1 fine for Most Stokes of 12, Monster Putter with 48 putts and a skirt. Franz was at least able to share his skirt photo with Richard D’Cruz, Connor Dodsworth and Richard Bolton.

Crediting the effects of Richard’s homebrew and perhaps able to relax as the round progressed, VP Ric Wymer took home Most Improved of 14. Big hitting Tony Howarth showed his touch around the greens to take home First Sandy on hole 3 in his final game whilst the equally long hitting Andrew Waite took home First Birdie for his hole 1 effort.

With Craig Edwards already standing to help Ric with his prize, he was awarded Low Putts for his 30 strokes on the  greens. Our one hiccup on the day saw Joshua Alexander’s handicap initially entered incorrectly a mistake not noted until after the prize giving meaning he and not Ken Runyon was awarded Low Net A – Ken see VP Ric next time out and we will correct this. Joining Joshua was the evergreen Geoff Thwaites (net 60) and Mick Dodsworth (net 75) as Andrew Shaw had already departed.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results of the day are here and photos of the day here.

Next Up: Rainbow Hills Sunday 17th June 2018 12.00pm

Precisely a year on from our last visit, we round off our Ramadan Tour of the great Bogor area courses on Sunday with a visit to the delightful Rainbow Hills. Next Up: Emeralda Golf Club 11am 10th June 2018

This week sees us again take advantage of the lighter traffic on the Jagorawi Toll to visit another of those gems of a course, Emeralda Golf Club.

With its 27 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer you can walk the footsteps of legends whilst enjoying one of the more picturesque courses we will play this year. Usually difficult to get good group booking slots at a reasonable price, Emeralda has been off our calendar for a couple of years so we are pleased to include it this year to our schedule. The rate of Rp950k includes the cart and dinner afterwards and with an early tee time we will be able to enjoy fully the day and not be too late returning home.

This week also marks the golfing farewell to Tony Howarth who will be moving before the end of June. Tony has been a strong supporter of Tee Set activities and we wish him well on the next leg of his adventures.

To come wish Tony farewell and join in all the fun of a Tee Set Sunday please sign up here.

Rancamaya 3rd June 2018: Tee Set versus D.O.G.S.

The Day

Rancamaya has developed into one of the main events on our calendar and this year was no exception with it proving to be a popular and hugely successful week-end. With so many players cross-pollinating the D.O.G.S. and Tee Set memberships, the numbers captured for Tee Set do not tell the whole story of well over 50 players and family enjoying the traditional Saturday night BBQ and 74 players heading out on Sunday to participate in the Tee Set versus D.O.G.S. match or to enjoy a social round with friends and participate to one of either Societies’ weekly event.

Logistically this all requires good administration and so a huge thank you to Mark Johnson who handled all the hotel bookings and BBQ planning, John Brown for the course bookings, Glen Menyennett for the extra meat which made sure there was enough for the BBQ, Bill Lloyd for his music and Ric Wymer and Beby who along with Mark and the D.O.G.S. Committee ensured the week-end went as smoothly as we could manage. We also would like to thank Dan Javier and Arthur Mallari of San Miguel who kindly sponsored our beer refreshments on Saturday night, which proved very popular with everyone.

All good organization cannot however survive first contact with Golf Course management and so as usual we needed to adapt our planning as extra groups on Saturday appeared around our flights. Nevertheless, we managed to get everyone back in time for an early BBQ on Saturday which, as always, proved a fun and sociable evening and which was capped off by a formal toast to the inspiration behind the week-end, our dear departed friend Juergen Degert.

Sunday again saw Mark and Ric needing to manage not only the match and players but also manage the starter who was trying to push our flights out 90 minutes early: a challenge for those who stayed over and wished to recover from Saturday night’s party and of course, for those coming for the day only who arrived for a 12pm tee time. Some patience and firm control saw everything get organized and both the 8 flights of the match and 11 other flights went out by just after 12pm so we could all be finished in good time to finish off any remaining refreshments from Saturday night and enjoy the good Club House F&B whilst the prize giving was conducted.

No newcomers this week but a notable welcome back to Connor Dodsworth after 118 weeks and Sofie Bright after 33 weeks.

Clearly there was so much fun going on that the photo taking was a little light – we missed Pascal’s keen eye for a picture this year. What we have is posted here and if anyone has more pictures to share please forward them to the Tee Set email and we will add them.

The Play

Despite the challenges of Saturday night for many, there were some impressive results on the day as you will read further of below. Rancamaya however can also prove to be tricky and so it proved for Andrew Shaw and Jeff Durham who were caught out to collect a skirt apiece. Most Strokes of 13 and Monster Putter of 44 both were secured by Kathy Scalabre who chose to have her photo taken with the Monkey. Lis Wymer had the most improved for her back 9 which was 11 shots better than the front.

First Birdie went to Simon Oxley who birdied hole 1 to guarantee himself a prize. Some juggling of the prizes saw Jaturaporn Pibankul awarded 1st Sandy for his effort on hole 6 and David Baglivo Low Putts for his 26 shots on the greens as part of his impressive net 66 despite still feeling the effects of a heavy Saturday night.

Best Gross of the day again went to Gary Hing for his excellent 76 off the stick whilst Richard Mau (72), Geoff Thwaites (71) and Andrew Shaw (72) took home the prizes for Low Net A, B and C, respectively.

Having completed the presentations for both D.O.G.S. and Tee Set’s weekly competition, the last order of business was for the Juergen Degert Trophy to be awarded to the winning Captain, Ric Wymer, with Tee Set having prevailed on the day 10-6. This is the first time Tee Set have won on its 3rd event so we will be looking to even up the score next year!
