The Day
With all the grown-ups away in Bali for the 2-day event at the lovely Handara course, more of which below, the rest of us were left to sort ourselves out. This was achieved with relative success though Holger Molendyk somehow managed to end up in a flight of just 1 – himself, happily this was sorted out after just a hole or two.
Just one Newcomer to report in Tan Chee Hua from Singapore; welcome Tan and, as we promised, 6 hour rounds are very much the exception rather than the rule at Tee Set so come back soon and often.
A notable Welcome Back to Tomas Dudasko at 43 weeks while Muhammad and his father-in-law Mustafa had also not darkened our doorstep in quite some time. A first warning to you all!!
PJ is in pretty good shape these days though the greens looked rather better than they played with the ball hopping about a little on some them. Add in decent food, attractively priced beer and excellent attentive service and PJ remains a great standby course always willing to receive us though the nonsense around not being able to pay until 12 noon remains a not insignificant pain.
A few light showers early on in the round and we thought we had got away with it until midway through the back nine when the heavens opened in the most spectacular fashion, lasting well over half an hour and flooding the course, causing most groups to call it a day – with only the match-play group eventually completing all 18 holes.
For those who were not there then you will get an idea of the ferocity of the downpour in this video taken during a mad scramble to get back to the clubhouse.
This meant that to get to prize giving many had to sit it out in the clubhouse for up to 2 hours as the truly dedicated waited for conditions to clear enough to resume play. Remarkably, two-thirds of the field were present as prizes were given out and with the club reporting record sales of their very reasonably priced Bintang. Well done to all for making the supreme sacrifice, hope you all got home ok.
Rather fewer than usual photos of the day as Brenda took a well-deserved break; thankfully she is back next week. A big thank you to Keith Miller who stepped in to look after all the arrangements and reporting on the day.
The Play

Some very odd-looking numbers on the scoreboard this week due to our taking account of just the 12 holes that every flight managed to complete. Please note that only those few who did manage to complete 18 holes will have their rounds entered into our handicap system.
Daniel Brown took the A Grade prize as the visiting Neil Mullins got Low Putts in the absence of Nicki Stuart, Keith Miller continued to enjoy and profit from his 22 Handicap while Rusty Witwer enjoyed the penultimate round of his latest visit from the US in recording the lowest net of the day of 45.
Rusty is here on his latest short-term contract to advise our host country on the secrets of avoiding forest fires and putting them out where prevention fails. Having peacefully settled into near retirement, Rusty was not exactly enthusiastic to come back half way round the world again – until he learned that his local course had cored all their greens – he reckons they will be perfect by the time he gets back 🙂
A number of prizes not awarded due to players being absent, a rule established back in 1983 requiring that you have to be present to receive a prize – and that is a tradition we have respected for all of our nigh on 35 years!!
Tee Set Match-Play Championship
Just one result today with Daniel Brown turning over Arthur Malleri 3 and 2 in their marathon six hours and 10 minutes round.
With this game, 4 matches are already completed and 12 remain to be completed in this round. With the higher turnout, our monthly medal is always a good time to get your match arranged so please check who is your opponent here and contact them to agree on playing if both of you can make it.
Match v Bali Par 5 Club
In addition to all the fun at PJ, this weekend also saw 16 Tee Setters and their families head to Bali to compete on behalf of Tee Set in Battle Royale III, the third installment in our now annual match against Par 5 Club.
The venue this year was the beautiful Handara course up in the mountains of central Bali. Both Par 5 members and Tee Setters were staying at the course so in addition to the 3 rounds of golf which made up the match, there was plenty of opportunity to sit out on the balcony and enjoy plenty of social interaction together. Surprisingly, despite the heavy down pour which greeted our arrival on Friday lunchtime, the 2 days of the match were uninterrupted by further rainfall during the games and were able to enjoy our golf in nice cool conditions and even some bright sunshine for a few hours on each of the days.
The management of the course made a great effort in getting the course into a good condition after several weeks of heavy rain and we thanked them for all their efforts in making this event such a success as well as thanking the Par 5 co-Captains Rob Nicholls and Derrick Richardson.
In the match, for the third year in a row the Battle Royale Cup was won by the home team with Par 5 prevailing 21-11 over Tee Set. An honourable mention to Chris Lever who went through the week-end unbeaten and a big thank you to Captain Nick Gleeson and all the Tee Setters who made to effort to come and support the event. Battle Royale IV will be in Jakarta so we will target to take the cup back on home turf.
Next Up: Cengkareng 12pm 29th April 2018
Monthly Medal and Eclectic VIII Round 1

Being the last week-end of the month, this Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s 2018’s Monthly Medal.

Thanks to the generous support of Ken Runyon and his team at Accel Golf and Golf and Special Events Management we will recognizing the Low Gross and Low A, B & C winners with a trophy in addition to presentation of the Monthly Medal to the overall winner.

This week will also be the 1st round of Cycle VIII of the Tee Set Eclectic and the first opportunity for you to put your marker down to wrestle the Eclectic Trophy off Cycle VII winner, Mr James Ross.
Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.
If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp800,000 walking please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual.
News Flash: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng management have recently purchased 8 golf carts. These are priced at Rp55ok a cart so if you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengakreng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.
