Next up: Palm Hill, Sunday 3rd April 2016

Palm Hills is one of Tee Setters’ most popular courses and ticks most of the boxes in terms of the all round golf experience, except the beer prices (be prepared!).  Wina has managed to negotiate a 12 noon semi-shotgun start off 6 tee boxes at 725,000Rp including cart.  It’s worth coming early to trek out to your tee box.  Who knows we may be able to sneak off before 12.

It  has been over 9 months since we experienced the hospitality of the Palm Hills clubhouse and staff, and the site of VP Exotic Drinks James hacking away at the sand (above).  In fact the VP has been conspicuously absent since this shot in June last year but I hear we may see him soon…good news for the Web Guy and other cocktail fans.

Unless you find the bunkers like James, Palm Hills is one of the easier courses on the schedule so beginners should feel super comfortable coming out, and others should be aiming for low scores…for a change.  Register here if you haven’t already.

Skirts

skirtsThe Singing President trailed that there would be some analysis coming up on skirts and he was right. At that time however the data was rather raw and the Web Guy was keen to add number of rounds played in achieving those skirts in order to arrive at a “skirt propensity”.

Casual inspection might reveal why to those familiar with our mildly updated Glossary of Terms.

Scoring

Golf scoringWhile keeping golf fun is our top priority, competition is becoming fierce in matchplay, in weekly net events, monthly medal stableford and in the eclectic.  We are seeing more mistakes in scoring which affect competitions and unnecessarily piss people off. With more players and more competitions coming up this year we need to get this right.

Our Secretaries to a great job in recording scores, but rely on what you give them on your score sheets.   So, here are some simple rules, we want to follow:

  1. Check your handicap on your Tee Set score card before you start.  Handicaps change weekly depending on the course and any updates made to your USGA base handicap.  If your score card does not have a handicap marked then talk with one of the organisers, you may have registered late or may not been allocated a Tee Set handicap yet and we may be able to check your records and help you out.
  2. Understand the scoring system: stableford is used for monthly medal whereby points are applied to your net score per hole as compared to par: 1 for a net bogey, 2 for a net par, 3 for a net birdie, etc. If you are not sure, ask before you play and before you sign your score cards.
  3. Exchange score cards with your playing partner before you start play; you can keep your score separately if you want for checking – this protects against error and suspicion.  The official score card is the Tee Set score card signed by both player and marker.
  4. Make your starting hole clear on the score sheet; prizes like first birdie, first par over 30, first sandy, most improved are calculated on holes as played.  So if you start on 10 and get a birdie on hole 2, then you mark 11 on your score card next to first birdie. Starting hole is also important in the event of a tie – a countback is based on the best score on the final nine holes as played.
  5. Write scores clearly and try to keep the score sheet dry and neat.
  6. Counting putts starts when on the green and continues even if your putt leaves the green; a chip from on the green (allowed but not encouraged) or after a putt (even less encouraged) is counted as a putt. Putts must be tallied at the end of the round.
  7. Sign and submit your score cards after you have agreed your score with your marker and submit to the Tee Set Secretary immediately after the round (before showering).
  8. Under the Rules of Golf signing a wrong score card is grounds for disqualification; we want to avoid that.

There will always be mistakes but these simple rules will make sure that they only happen at the scorer’s desk, and they can always be corrected :-).

Monthly Medal, Imperial Golf Klub (with a K), Sunday 27th March 2016

26060269556_5f7fa7fa56_z

The Day

IMP-Hilites

With a lot of Tee Setters away for the long weekend in Bandung and even more exotic locations, we still managed a great turnout of 43.  Imperial again delivered: macet free journeys, brilliant weather, no overbooking meaning no delays, and friendly service from arrival to eventual departure well after dark.  A big welcome to newcomers Mathias and Kong, and welcome back to Graeme after 141 weeks away, who must have thought we were punishing him for his long absence by incorrectly naming him as Monster Putter before correcting our ways. Sorry Graeme always assume we stuffed up, thanks for being a good sport and now will the real Monster Putter step up…oh Mike there you are below.

Some great photography from Monthly Medal El Supremo Pastis Pascal, so in contrast to last week, photos will overshadow words this week!  This next series capturing some of the snaps of the day.

The Play

IMP-Summary

As usual, Imperial produced a mix of spectacularly good and bad golf, often from the same players.  It’s only fitting that we start with our Monthly Medallist, Leona.

26084956885_9fafbcd2e5_m

With 40 points Leona had the round of the day and joins husband Jan’s name on the shield, just in time before they leave us to return home to the Czech Republic (see I got it right this time :-))

You have been Tee Set regulars and will be missed, best wishes from all of us.

Roger led the way again with Low Net A, leaving Santi segwaying in to take Low Gross, the Singing President looking a bit manic here after a bizarre day of two nines – 54 on the front and 38 on the back to win Low Net B grade on a dramatic countback, and Pastis Pascal attempting the breath holding contest after winning Low net C Grade.

In the skills prizes, Mo disappeared without claiming Low Birdie or Longest Drive, and after pleading with the caddy measuring the drive that it was longer than 263 yards.  Susanti won longest drive for ladies repeating the swing here.  Billy did well to even get out of bed after a torrid schedule, but somehow managed to win Nearest to the Pin.  Perrenial prize winner El Guapo took first sandy but there remains a mystery as to how he snapped his club after consecutive OBs. Paisan won a 100,000Rp of small change and the VP for Almost Everything wasn’t hearing anything about his new hairstyle after taking out Low Putts.

Jan gets his own special spread this week after going from dejection after Most Strokes to triumph as Most Improved. Art joined Jan for most strokes and Mike was reunited with his furry friend for Monster Putter.

And now for the skirts.  The Web Guy has recently discovered the complete tally of Tee Set skirts over the years since records but is not yet ready to share until he has done some further analysis…may tell you something about who is near the top. As for Sunday, what a crop of skirts we had.  The convention is that less hirsute cross dressers get the wig but VP for Almost Everything became nostalgic for his high school days…see below from the vault.

Matchplay and Ecletic

In a sign of our growing “maturity” (!!) you can now follow these competitions on their own pages. Matchplay is now into the third round as is the 3rd Cycle of the Tee Set eclectic. Scores after the third round (of a 5 round cycle) will be up soon.

Next Up

Back to the site of many a good (and sometimes long) Sunday afternoons at Palm Hill just off the Sentul Race Circuit.  The amazing Wina has managed to negotiate a 12 noon start of 6 tee boxes at 725,000Rp including cart.  Beers can be a bit pricey so come prepared.  Register here as usual.

Next up: Monthly Medal and much else at Imperial with a K

and its good night from them .....

the view from the Tee Set balcony after the skirts photo is taken ….

Next up

Sunday sees the usual end of month return to our home in the Undying Lands in the West at the Imperial Golf Klub where we will all be playing for the March Monthly Medal and the 3rd (?) round of the 3rd Eclectic cycle, though as if that were not enough, it is shaping up to be a pretty busy day also for Tee Set Matchplay with five matches already set up.

Our newly appointed Monthly Medal Supremo, Pastis Pascal, has spent no little time tidying up the historical data etc for both competitions and the links in the paragraph above lead to a rich source of information and data on the course itself and both competitions. Well worth a visit, many thanks, Pastis!!!

A first tee time of 11:48 from tee boxes 1 and 10 and with reasonable green fees of 770,00 for the splendid course and facilities we should be in for a great day so, if you haven’t already, then sign up here to join in the fun.

International Schools Golf Tournament

A cry for help has been received from former Tee Set President Dave Tarcy.

Dave is looking for some honest upstanding golfers to help marshall the above event at Jags on Thursday 7th April until Saturday 9th April inclusive and, naturally enough, turned to Tee Set 🙂

The tournament programme is as follows:

Kids golf

If you can help on one or more days then please urgently contact Dave who will put you fully in the picture.

It hardly goes without saying that your reward will largely be in heaven for helping in what should be a tremendous experience for all those junior golfers, however, Dave has promised some free mid-week play vouchers for Jags to ensure you experience some of the same torture as the kids!!

See yah at Imperial! ….. Tee Set

Senayan National, Sunday 20th March 2016

SENAYAN-NATIONAL-GOLF-CLUB

SN Hi-lightsThe Day

After heavy rains the night before, Senayan was a little boggy but the greens drained well and many a putt picked up speed as they took off down the slopes.  A few last minute withdrawals were balanced by a few last minute registrations.  With ten or so involved in Interleague including both VPs, the turnout of 56 was excellent (a couple of cards were not handed in).

Senayan’s very attractive promotional rate of 495,000 roops was not exclusive to Tee Set and the management failed to communicate that there would be a hold up after nine holes as Tee Setters caught up with other groups the starter inserted in between.  A few tense moments before the Manager and the Singing President squared off to avoid conflict between players.  The numbers booked made it impossible for everyone to finish before dark and regrettably a few missed their last hole, missing holes were completed with a bogey or double bogey depending upon handicap.

A better (though not necessarily cheaper) deal has been promised for 3 July when we play there next including an earlier tee time.

Overall there was a large turnout of players staying for several hours and enjoying Senayan’s great facilities, some kicking on to other more lively venues afterwards, including one party checking out new sponsor Shangri-la before they had their 30% discount cards…patience men!

To keep the Treasurer happy (which means ultimately keeping us all happy), Tee Setters contributed what could be record takings after shirt and bag tag sales, and a rich skirt harvest (below).  It comes back to you in prizes, events and championships so take joy in giving!

The Play

SN Summary

Some other pressures on your scribe have prevented the usual full spread this week.  A rather unusual result for Low Putts is being reviewed and no prize was awarded.  The key winners are pictured here, with Mark leading the tables in both low gross (76) and low net (67) A, which means John Mesiti and newcomer Rob Cheng shared low gross with 80.

Senayan also inflicted some damage: Pieter’s caddy retired hurt after a vicious slice from Dede struck her on the arm;  Mullins did a Mullins (see Glossary  here)…several times after losing his swing somewhere on the way to the course; newcomer Andrew Chee challenged the record with 53 putts to take Monster Putter but was spared a fine on his first round, and the 10 skirts, kept the coffers overflowing.

Detailed, player by player results, can be found here while there are lots of photos of a great day on the Tee Set Gallery on the way if not posted yet.

A discreet footnote on our brave warriors representing us at Interleague at Jagorawi.  The post victory euphoria has officially ended with a crushing 10 zip defeat to Tin Cups.  Captain Ric has gone into camp to rethink strategy.

Tee Set Matchplay

In an epic battle that was to swing either way during the afternoon, Santi (Mrs Pie) Miller and “Pastis” Pascal Bekaert ended up all square after 18 holes when it was of course (under the Rules of Golf pertaining to matchplay) their right to decide how to break the tie. To the astonishment  of most they decided to play another 18 holes at Imperial next week to resolve the issue.

In the only other matchplay, Mark Fiorello’s 76 off the stick and a net 67 was too strong for a nervous Renny Sperry, resulting in a 6 and 5 win.  Mark’s matchplay performances have been excellent to date and Renny gained valuable experience for next time, knowing she can relax and use her handicap advantage to shift the pressure onto the low handicappers.

Glossary of Terms

It has become clear that the site is in need of a helpful “glossary of terms” to assist the understanding of all, but Newcomers in particular – this is now provided here.

Next Up

Monthly Medal will be played over the Easter weekend at Imperial Golf Klub (with a K).  Register here as usual.

Next up: Senayan, Sunday 20th March 2016

SenayanBack  to Senayan National on Sunday after an absence of only a couple of months – a lovely shortish par 69 course with a convenient central location, at least on a Sunday, and always super-popular with most Tee Setters.

A no-brainer at the specially discounted offer price we have obtained of just 495,000 roops walking with a 12:30 first tee time from 1 & 10. Ideal course for walking in fact but we know many prefer to cart it – at a rather less bargain 250,000 per pax.

40 plus Tee Setters are already signed up so we will be pre-arranging all groups and tee times once again. The usual e-mail advising handicaps and groups will go out on Friday evening or Saturday morning to all who have registered by then.

Register here to join in the fun if you haven’t already.

Interleague

Also on Sunday is the latest round of Interleague with green gees of 1,050,000 roops including shared cart for those playing or supporting. The VP of Almost Everything will have or will be in touch with those affected. 9:30am start for the team, about 10am for supporters.

Membership Cards

These are now ready to go into production and all the cards we are making can be found here. If you would prefer another photo to go on your card then send it to us today or it will be too late. If you are not on the list and want a Tee Set Membership Card, a card that will give you all sorts of discounts and benefits, then e-mail us now.

Riverside, 13th March 2016

RS-HilitesThe Day

As trailered, 52 Tee Setters including a healthy turn out of ladies once again, were to get away a little early at Riverside in glorious weather – and in a mini-shotgun formation from holes 1-6, a great initiative by the club to get us around in good time.

The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft awry of course and with just the lead flights home we were to “enjoy” a lightning show of impressive proportions, a show that was to bring about a temporary stop to proceedings for the others.

Having been severely beaten up by a very challenging course, and with only a hole or two to play, most turned that temporary stop into a permanent one and withdrew to the Riverside’s attractive lounge for some comforting food and beverage. A few subsequently went out to complete their rounds while the rest were rewarded for their sloth by having their missing holes filled in with a bogey or double bogey depending upon handicap.

In the absence of both the Singing President and the VP of Nearly Everything, VP for Lady Enlargement, Mel Cantarella was in charge while Brenda did everything as usual.

As a thank you for our big turnout today, the club gave us 4 vouchers for free midweek green fees. The Web Guy decided that the winners of these would be chosen by a simple draw of names from the hat and, in a clear fix, saw Mel pull his name out of the hat to win two of them for himself, with the other two going to Maya Till.

RS Newcomers

A healthy 6 Newcomers to report today so, welcome to Tee Set all, enjoy your golf with us and, if you haven’t already got yourself one, please purchase a Tee Set shirt next time out, we really expect you to have a Tee Set shirt.

Despite the size of the field, the longest Welcome Back was a rather unimpressive 17 weeks by Rick Zanker – and with only Rick and Sudhir in double figures.

The Course the Shark built is arguably the toughest challenge of all in the Jakarta area with its length being just one of its daunting “attractions”, most players having to use fairway woods for their second shots in to tricky undulating greens (another “attraction”) on the par 4s – and usually coming up short 😦

With just four players out of the entire field of 52 Tee Setters achieving net par or better there appears to be a strong case for the whole field playing off white tees at Riverside. Doubtless your indefatigable committee will consider this next time and perhaps give us all a break 🙂

We have been steadily reducing our exposure to courses on the Jags Tol, with the appalling traffic to be found there on a Sunday afternoon and evening being the reason and not the quality of the courses. Caused by returning Puncak weekend visitors, the journey home is perfectly capable of turning a great day into a bad one, however, today was relatively benign with the journey back to South Jakarta of 45 minutes being the norm for once. Riverside is of course relatively blessed, with entry onto the Jags Tol being after the notorious Cimanggis Gate where it is possible to spend an hour to spend a dollar.

The Play

RS-Summary

RS WinnersWith Stuart Wigley taking Low Gross with 81 off  the stick, Santi got Low Net A-Grade with a 72 while Andrew Waite and Cucu took the money for B and C grade respectively.

On greens as tough as anywhere, Jaco Zaayman’s 28 blows with the flat blade to take Low Putts was we suspect the equivalent of 24/25 putts almost anywhere else.

RS Skirts

The distance between Riverside’s blue and red tees are rather less heroic than those of Cengkarang and the skirt count was therefore to drop sharply from last week’s monstrous all time record of 17 to a mere 4 this time out, much to the disappointment of the absent Treasurer one imagines.

RS Monkey.PNGWell done to Newcomer Andrew McKelvie for losing his Monkey virginity with a 47 that was to only just beat the field. Best to get that particular Monkey off your back ASAP Andrew!!

An outstanding but far from record 14 strokes on a hole was to leave Chris Till minus 50,000 roops in his pocket but he was to take some consolation in wife Maya winning a couple of the free Riverside green fee vouchers!

More detailed, player by player results here while lots more photos of a fine day can be found on the Tee Set gallery as ever.

Tee Set Matchplay

Just one result from the matchplay today with Santi Miller playing well, including a remarkable 38 on the front 9, in overcoming an out-of-sorts Axel by 5 and 4.

Tee Set membership cards

Those who live in a smartphone centric world have been confounded by their inability to register for a membership card while those for whom a PC or laptop is a feature of life were to have no such issue.

To get things on the road we have therefore added everyone who has played 2 or more rounds since the Championship to the membership card list, a list which you will see attached here. If you want to see your name as displayed on the card to be other than that as presented on that list then you will have to let us know immediately if you have not done so already.

Next up

Senayan birds eye.PNGWith the Interleague team away doing battle at Jagorawi we also offer the alternative of the always popular Senayan in the city centre next Sunday when green fees will be a remarkable 495,000 roops walking. and this on a course as friendly to that activity as any to be found in these parts, or another 250,000 if you want the comfort of a cart. 12:30 start from 1 & 10 with participation limited to a maximum of 48 Tee Setters – so get registered early is the message on this one, you can register for Jags or Senayan as appropriate here.

Green fees at Jags including shared cart are 1,050,00 roops with a 9:30 shotgun start. Captain Ric will be in touch with those selected.

Next up: Riverside, Sunday 13th March 2016

RiversideRather oddly, six months have passed since our last visit to the course that the Shark built on Sunday, another five-star course in a string of so many of them this year for Tee Set, and one that is thankfully less far down the Jags Tol than any other – allowing you back on to the Tol past the Cimanggis Gate disaster area on your way home.

A fabulous course and complemented by one of the most pleasant restaurant areas there is, perfect for arriving early and getting breakfast when you would also benefit from the system going back this week to the usual (sort of) first-come first-served.

11:45 tee time from 1 & 10 and green fees of 770,000 roops including shared cart according to the Tee Set guy who should know as he works there. Register to join the many who have already put up their hand

Tee Set Membership Cards

id card 1 (1)Rather a slow response to something that will provide great benefits to card holders at the Shangri-La Hotel to start with – and then to a number of other goods and services providers we have in the pipeline.

The cards are free of charge, require you to have played Tee Set in the last twelve months and can only be collected at Tee Set Sunday venues. Complete the following and it is done; if you don’t then the next opportunity will only be in 6 months time at least. No tears.

C Hilites

The Day

The Singing President was to have something of a bizarre and truncated day by adopting a rarely invoked LIFO (Last in First Out) policy.  However in the short time he was with us, he managed to sow utter confusion by going to the wrong starting tee box for a nice long chat – causing his group to miss their allotted tee time and this was to be followed string of events during the day including a near miss from the flight behind who were firing in missiles before the green was clear….well in fairness, the green was clear but the aim was off.  Words and signals were thrown the full 140 metres across water and sincere apologies were later provided, all sweet!  A hazard that we all need to be particularly wary of in large turnouts.

Great to see Tee Set ladies again out in force…some pictured here before play.

25488015271_cdaacbf7cc_z

Shendy was mistaken for a newcomer but in reality she was one of our all-time leaders in the welcome backs after 256 weeks…..pre modern Tee Set records.  Muhammad and Susanty were also back after over 130 weeks.  Great to see you back!

A lot of newcomers including Mick’s mates from Perth who deserve an award for endurance after their gruelling three day schedule taking in all the best drinking holes in Jakarta.

Skirts record

It is quite possible on a hot day at  Cengkareng to get tired walking from the blue tees to the red tees alone, and this was to play its part in inducing a mind boggling 17 skirts on Sunday – blowing past Imperial and Matoa on a humble 14 apiece – and setting a new all-time Tee Set record in the process as you will see from the table opposite. Well done all, we can only imagine that record will stand for some time!

On behalf of a very happy treasurer, we would like to express our thanks everyone, and it was everyone this week, who contributed their 50,000 roops 🙂

And in recognition we have brought the skirt photo upfront.

The Play

C Summary

More detailed, player by player results here and lots of photos of the day on the Tee Set Gallery.

Three sub 80 rounds and some very good net rounds showed Tee Setters learning how to master the Cengkers course.  Murcho returned to his old stamping ground where he was a member for many years and won Low Net A grade with 66 tying with Billy for low gross with 78. Murcho was reported to be still on a high from his round on Tuesday night where he shared his success with the crowd at the Jaya Pub…what’s golf they asked? Jaroslav and Jana kept B and C net grade in the family with excellent rounds of 68 and 73.

In other prizes, Tom found his range with 27 putts, Mark and Ronald got off to flyers with birdies on the first, Mo was first into and out of the beach but shot off home before the photo (was there a skirt involved?…no as it turned out). Fantastic effort for Kim who showed her improvement with first par over 30 handicap and not sure what happened to Jim’s front nine but a 17 shot improvement on the back nine won him the money. The skirts dominated collections this week, but we can’t forget  Shendy who was welcomed back with Monster Putter after 52 putts and Most Strokes on a hole with 12.

Before moving on to other topics, we thought we would invite Tee Setters to suggest a caption for this photo of normally mild mannered Mike and Matchplay El Supremo James.

2016 Matchplay

Tom Grace and Chris Lever  completed their second round match with Chris up 3 and 1.

Tom reported that Chris shrugged off a poor driving day with some masterful draws into the par 3’s and wished Chris luck in the next round.

Tee Set Schedule Updates

cartoonIt was the frozen margaritas this week on special at the 19th and our field for Sunday at Cengkareng was full.

To keep the great numbers up, we have been able to secure a number of very fine courses so the schedule continues to be updated.

One of Jakarta’s best courses, BSD, is usually only affordable during Ramadan but has offered us a good rate for regular Sundays and we have accepted it.

Senayan has a limited time offer of 495,000 for walking and 795,000 for shared cart which we have snapped up for 20th March – and will push to also get later in the year.  See, we do listen to website comments, Tom Alcedo 🙂

Another top day of  golf in April at the SPE event notified in our classifieds.
