Pondok Cabe, Sunday 7th November 2014

The Day

Despite following the Tee Set Championship last Sunday, the HOGS event the previous day and indeed the promise of rain, 33 Tee Setters turned up and found themselves blessed with a course in excellent condition, an early start, fast golf and brilliant weather.

Welcome backs

Amongst  those 33 stalwarts was just one Newcomer in Ales Rozmanity and 6 Welcome Backs headed up by young Nicky Moir who is clearly not averse to getting away from the ice-cold conditions of Aberdeen to see his old mates in Jakarta.

Welcome to Tee Set Ales, enjoy your golf with us – and don’t forget  to register with us here.

Tee Set scheduler, Wina “Just in Time” Nugraha, was bamboozled by that early start and was only to catch up her playing partners, Daniel and Yangjin, on the 12th  – before going back to finish the 10th and 11th on her tod.

Long tablesThe day was rounded off by a very solid after-match turn out on the long table and the début of our Singing President, who apart from reading prizes in the wrong order, managed to survive the heckling.

Who game me this song sheet
Despite strong encouragement from the floor, the Singing President refused to sing, singling out (sic) the lack of a back up band. Poor excuse  that.

Noticeably quiet during the closing proceedings were the Roos’ and Shenmans who it was clear had “over-celebrated” at the King’s Birthday party at the Thai Embassy the night before.

All enjoyed the early finish and light traffic, with even the usual last-to-leaves getting home before dark to be greeted by some very shocked wives.

Great day.

The Play

Winners

The course proved a fair test to all but newly crowned  Club Champion, Jaco Zaayman, who showed the value of lessons and hard work with a blistering Low Net 59 (yep, 59) that will ensure the Tee Set handicapper will be on his case with some relish.  Not since the great Mel Meeds record equalling round of some years ago has there been such a display of burglary.

NeilNeil Mullins, with his new putter in play and no obvious signs of self-harm from the Championship, came through with a classy 80 to take Low Gross.

Neil was to share some glory with his playing partners, the fast improving Jason Vanderlinden, who out-putted Neil, and Martin Blobner who, for the first time ever at Tee Set, avoided a skirt at the 4th attempt – well done Martin!!

Love birdsDespite very many other sub-30 efforts, Chris Lever took Low Putts with an impressively low 24 blows with the flat one, while Leona and Jan proved inseparable again, managing to share First par for >= 30 handicappers on the very same hole to ensure they doubled their usual weekly take from the category.

Boobies

Monster PutterAles Rozmanity celebrated joining us by securing himself a Skirt, Noemi celebrated surviving the King’s birthday bash with 44 putts, despite her new glasses, to take Monster Putter while Chris Chan and Rick Zanker triumphed against some strong competition to earn “Most Strokes” for themselves with an only moderately impressive 11 apiece.

Fuller, player by player results can be found here while more photos of the day can be found on our gallery.

Next up:

The first up to register each week is almost invariably Meeds, M; he of the ready and astringent wit, the big if occasionally wayward drive and lover of a beer, or sometimes three if his arm is twisted far enough up his back.

A very active member since 2006, Mel is almost part of the furniture at Tee Set and it is with no little sadness that we have to report that he is moving back to his beloved Sydney (?)  where he will be looking after the petunias, frightening the neighbours and taking divots out of the fairways on a more regular basis than for the last 9 years.

Regular player, Interleaguer, veteran sponsor through his company, Quest, and invariably first to volunteer if we are short of someone to sort out the the flights,  Mel will be missed by all, and not least by some for his often misplaced propensity for taking on a wager.

Next Sunday is Mel’s last game with us and, to make sure that he is appropriately dispatched, we are moving our next round from Palm Hill to Pangkalan Jati so that we can celebrate appropriately in his honour – and indeed shift some of those “surplus” refreshments left over from the Championship at the same time.

Tee off at PJ will be 11:00 from the usual tee boxes when green fees will be 500,000 including shared buggy with a walking option of some 100,000 less. Sign up here as usual to join in what should be a day of no little enjoyment.

See ya at PJ ….. Tee Set

Next Up: Pondok Cabe, Sunday 7th December 2014

The Tee Set Championship is something of a hard act to follow of course but somebody has to take us back to the bread and butter – and that somebody is Pondok Cabe this year.

PC is something of an unsung hero when it comes to courses in Jakarta but is in fact quite a little gem and possessed of many own virtues of its own including a very decent course which has seen significant investment over the last couple of years with true greens, the most reasonable green fees and beer prices in Jakarta and good food – all served up by most agreeable clubhouse staff – and they have even started hiring caddies who put lipstick on in the morning while their “tempat pijat” is legendary and comes highly regarded by many Tee Setters of the old school.

A pretty hard to resist combo so, sign up here as usual for what should be another fine Tee Set Sunday. Green fees are a very modest 400,000 including buggy, or 75,000 less if you fancy using Shank’s pony – 11am tee off from 1 & 10 – and don’t be late as we sometimes get away early.

See ya at PC!!! …. Tee Set

PS if you were unfortunate enough to miss the big day then don’t despair, you can still get the new, very high quality Tee Set Championship shirt for a song at just 300,000 – and with the Tee Set Championship hat, Tee Set towel and a pair of Tee Set socks thrown in for good measure.

Don’t know how we do it – drop Ric a line if you wish to be properly dressed for Tee Set in future.

2014 Tee Set Championship, 30th November 2014

A full houseThe Day

In spite of the disgustingly early start called for, we had in attendance today and indeed playing, all of the current Tee Set President, Vice President, one future President and Vice President, two former Presidents and one former Vice President. Also present were three ex-Tee Set Champions and three ex-Match Play Champions.

In total we had a record 98 players managing to obey Tee Set Rule #1 in teeing off unassisted at the moment of the shot-gun start at 07:15. Well done to all, you won’t have to get up so early on a Sunday for another year!

Bet I have more HotHed umbrealls than you

I bet I have more Hot-Hed umbrellas than you!

Pleased to report that administratively the whole day went smoothly, with the investment in getting all the goody bags ready the previous day in particular leading to an early morning air of calm that has not been a characteristic of previous Championships.

The weather was fabulous, the course was in great shape and the Matoa staff looked after us extremely well. A very fitting swan song to the 2013/14 season.

After the golf was all done and dusted there was a tremendous spread of food put on by the Matoa F&B staff  augmented with fresh yabbies from Tucker Box, sausage rolls from Cecilia’s Café and mini pies from Santi’s Premium Pies. Nobody went home hungry.

The Kilkenny barrel from Murphy’s was consumed in record time and then we were into Mixologist Jamail’s famous frozen Margaritas whipped up on the brand new Tee Set heavy-duty blender asset while there were enough refreshments in the esky boxes to sink an Italian cruise liner – a non-golf playing visitor from outer space would have been intrigued to witness the pouring of players into their cars at the end of the day. Nobody went home thirsty.

We were to use our full allotment of 25 flights off 13 tee boxes for the shot gun start. That it all took slightly longer then the normal round of around 4 hours was obviously due to the numerous distractions to be found around the course such as Jack Calcote’s notorious smoothies, the vodka orange hole, eskies full of beer, hot dogs and pies. If anybody noticed the slower than usual round then, for sure, nobody cared.

Newcomers and welcome backsA warm Tee Set Welcome to Andie Djohor, Dick Slaney and Mark Potter but, guys, please don’t imagine it is like this every week!

Andie was responsible for the excellent new Championship shirts, banners, trophies and much else besides. Good job, Andie.

Dick is known to most and is of course the much appreciated main sponsor of our Monthly Medal events while Mark is son of that Jakarta legend, Keith Potter. Welcome all!!!

Despite Tee Set playing some of the best courses around Jakarta there are still permanent residents who find it difficult to find the time to play a regular round. Tim Supple 122 weeks, Bob Shearer 114 weeks, Sam Thwaites 105 weeks. Come on guys let’s not let those clubs go rusty in the garage between rounds.

Not dissimilar to the Bali Classic, our season-ending event pulls in Tee Setters now living outside Indonesia with Secretary Stealer Mike Taylor flying in all the way from Houston, Mel Cantarella from Melbourne and George “Pulpy” Bevege from Manila, just for the event.

Mel took 8 hours to fly in from Melbourne and 4 hours to go by taxi to his hotel. Welcome back to Jakarta, Mel 🙂

reggae Bill 2The Tee Set Championship has acquired a few traditions as the years have rolled by and one of them is the appearance of the Band from Bandung and, of course, some of our number joining them for our entertainment. Thanks once again to Geoff Thwaites for getting them down from Bandung.

This year saw the inevitable and hugely appreciated reggae from our Gold Sponsor Billy Lloyd, some classic Rolling Stones from “Malty” Suermondt, C&W and other from Mike Taylor and of course some quality crooning from our President to be at that time, the inimitable Craig Ewers.

THe president's SpeechWell done to them all and any others we have failed to mention, there were many who got up there; Tee Set has Talent!

In spite of the legendary quantities of alcohol of all varieties consumed on the course there was still some excellent play with not a lot separating the A and B gross winner with Pulpy George hitting 79 in the A grade and Jan Janda not so far behind with 85 in B.

KK also not far further back with 92 in the C grade while Matt Fairey received his new Ping driver the same day as the event and used it to good effect in smashing his ball 265m for longest drive. A pretty good advertisement for the driver you might say. Nenden out-drove many of the guys with her 200m effort to take Longest Drive – Ladies .

Mullins in particularly ineffective attempt to hide identityMany will have noticed the pervasive photographer (345 photos on the day) and took his presence in good part, however, Neil Mullins wasn’t so keen on having his identity revealed.

As you will see in the photo opposite Neil was not particularly successful in his attempts to hide his identity from whoever it is that he is trying to hide it from 🙂

Another popular feature of the day is of course the Lucky Draw, with every players name going into the hat for some splendid prizes courtesy of our many sponsors. There were so many this year that we put them into bundles so that we could all get away before dark.

Door prizes
Lucky door prizes

Closing out the presentations the outgoing President of Some Things confirmed the new President and Vice President for 2015. Craig Ewers will be in charge for next year ably assisted by Simon Reynolds. We wish them every success in their roles and expect them to take Tee Set to new heights of golfing enjoyment in the coming year!

Outstanding Contributions

Tee Set events generally run with few SNAFUs and of course this doesn’t happen by random chance and a little pocket pissing wouldn’t go astray here so, let’s thank the committee of Peter, Ric and Keith for their efforts during the year.

Ric is of course  the living, beating heart of Tee Set Golf and is not pithily known as the Immediate Past President of Almost Everything for nothing.

Keith’s tireless work on the web site and the database provides a wealth of information, a sense of community, and is a genuine magnet for new members.

The Match Play competition ran smoothly and ahead of schedule thanks to the efforts of Fernando Gaggino.

Having a pre-defined 6 month schedule has proved its worth and that’s down to Wina Nugraha’s hard work in creating the schedule and advance booking the courses.

Where’s Brenda? becomes a repeated cry on the rare occasions our secretary is not present on any given Sunday, so we are very thankful to have had her around for the great majority of events this year – and not least at Matoa where she did an excellent job inputting 98 score cards to determine the correct winners in a timely manner.

Many thanks to all those many others who chipped in with their help during the year. It all goes towards making Tee Set the best-loved golfing group in Jakarta.

The usual more detailed, player by player results, can be found here while we hope to have uploaded the massive 345 photos of the day taken by our photographer during the day to the Tee Set gallery only by the end of the week – they will take some time to upload given that each of the photos are more than 5 megabytes.

And so it’s goodbye from them ….

The demographics of Tee Set means that apart from what might be called the hard-core, people tend to come and go within 2-4 years. This means that today was the last supper for both George “Pulpy” Bevege and Greg Fields who are both headed for pastures new in the Philippines and Aussie/Dubai respectively, and we wish them well as they leave as “Members in Good Standing“.

Enjoy your golf guys and do let us have a contribution to “News from afar” when you have had a decent period of settling in you new locations; many promise a contribution but distance seems to have an effect on the memory and the will!

Next Up: The 2014 Tee Set Championship

Not a lot more to be said other than we are full up – and the most amazing day is in store for all 104 registered participants for the 2014 Tee Set Championship.

Team Photo 2013A final reminder to be at the course absolutely no later than 6.30 on Sunday Morning as there is stuff to be done like paying your green fees, getting your goodie bag and changing into you spanking new 2014 Tee Set Championship shirt (compulsory btw) – and we have the traditional massive “team photo” opportunity at 7am before disappearing in our carts to our respective tees for the 07:15 Shotgun Start from 13 tee boxes.

To encourage you to avoid tardiness, the first 50 arrivals will receive a Rp. 150,00o voucher generously provided by Mad Dogs.

In short and to recap, do the following:

on arrival, pay your 900,000 at reception when you will receive your preprinted handicap card and the Mad Dogs voucher if you are in the first 50 to register,

collect your goodie bag and get into your Championship shirt

check for your flight and designated tee box

be at the front of the clubhouse by 06:55 for the team photo at 07:00

go to your cart (marked with your designated tee box and which should have your clubs already in it) and then to your tee box

play your hardest …

complete and give your scorecard to Brenda immediately after finishing your round – and not after you have showered

Finally a modest but most attractive prize will also be on offer to the player who wears the oldest Tee Set shirt after showering!!

Jagorawi New Course, Sunday 23rd November 2014

Winner are grinners …… plus RIc

The Day and the Play

The closing Interleague event of the year saw us providing the largest group of participants with 16 Tee Setters signed up, followed by the Cloggies with 12.

The rather unusual hybrid format employed on the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all and proved beyond doubt that if you could have more than one swing off every tee box then your score would improve by at least 100% (eh? – ED).

Happy to say that Tee Set provided both the first place team and runner-up in this format and that your committee has committed to putting something similar into the Tee Set calendar for 2015 as a novelty.

1st place – Chris Chan, Richard Mau, Hossam, Sofree

2nd place – Ric, Bushy, Tetty, Malty

.. and runners-up can be pretty happy too ....

.. and runners-up can be pretty happy too ….  with Ric part of the team this time …

Tee Set’s success was to extend to almost all categories with Peter Bush outstanding in easily taking the longest drive award with an absolute smash past 250m.

The barbie after the game was perhaps the biggest highlight of a day of highlights with Kees de Korver cooking up a storm with his marinated beef and chicken topped off with chilly beans. Much appreciated effort from Kees in keeping the hordes well fed!

The day was topped off with the Cloggies being awarded their shirt award for the Interleague 2015 winner and Mad Dogs as runners-up came away with a nice laser engraved coffee tumbler apiece. Joseph Peries was adjudicated the MVP for managing not to lose a single match in the whole series.

Well done to us too, as we managed to tie for second place but were to lose out rather unluckily to Mad Dogs on a count back. We look forward to putting in an even stronger challenge for the trophy next year.

The Interleague committee headed by Anthony King closed out the day with a thank you to all for their participation throughout the year – and to Edwin Palmer as manager of the Jags course for looking after the group so well, while Geoff Thwaites on behalf of us all thanked Anthony for his time and efforts leading the committee throughout another successful year of competition.

With all the pocket pissing done, the single malt whisky was cracked open by Anthony. Nobody remembers who was in the last group to leave the club house for home but it goes without saying there was nothing left but fumes in that bottle of single malt.

Weather fantastic throughout – and the trip home to Jakarta the fastest ever experienced for an afternoon’s round at Jags. All in all a very fine day.

Weclome to the 2014 Tee Set Championship
One would hardly imagine that we would need to tell you what is up next but, just in case you have been on the dark side of the moon for the last month or three – or perhaps a seismic camp in Papua, we have something called the Tee Set Championship coming up next Sunday, the absolute pinnacle of the Tee Set year!

An up-to-date list of registered Tee Setters is here.

Have a look at this page in order to fully brief yourself on the venue, schedule, prize and food and drinks and heaven knows what else. But if you know nothing else, know that it is a 7:15 am shotgun start from 13 tees so be there in good time, certainly no later that 6:30 am.

The field is complete and the flights more or less determined, so there is nothing more to say other than, see ya at Matoa !!!! …. Tee Set

Next up: Jagorawi New Course, Sunday 23rd November

Interleague EOS

Next up is of course the end of Interleague season competition and prize giving at the Jagorawi New Course on Sunday.

Tee Set’s teams will be put together based on registrations and only finalised a little prior to tee off. If you have a flight in mind then let us know.

A few have asked about the format for the event and may very well be interested in the graphic opposite taken from the Interleague’s October Newsletter.

It is certainly different and appears to take elements from stroke play, Stableford scoring, Texas scramble and heaven knows what else but each player has the opportunity to contribute on every hole.

There are two certainties for this Sunday, the nominated scorer in each flight is going to be very busy with the pen – and there is going to be a lot of fun with bottles of wine up for grabs for the winning and runner-up teams.

Tee off will be at 12:45 with a shot gun start off all tee boxes so it should be a quick round with the course more or less all to ourselves.

Green fees inclusive of cart and caddie are a bargain Rp805,000. If you want a female caddie then remember to book one at the bag drop when you arrive.

Plenty of spare slots still left open for what should be a memorable day so, if you haven’t already, then sign up here as ever.

After the game there will be a barbie in the clubhouse with steaks both provided and cooked by Kees de Korver, God bless you Kees. Also on the menu will be veggies, spuds and Kees’ infamous chilly beans and, if there are enough funds left in the Interleague kitty, then a keg or two of Jakarta’s finest ale will be laid on while the winners and losers of the Interleague season are presented with their trophies.

After the presentations it is believed  that Viggo Kristoffersen will perform his infamous rendition of the Swingers from Sentul war song to celebrate their winning of the wooden spoon. The song is expected to be followed up immediately with another round of single malt whisky.

Finally a new entry on the Classifieds page where Mel Meeds is offering a bargain price Cross Trainer (a what? – ED) which he describes as being semi-dismantled but which we strongly suspect means he only ever got round to half building it 🙂

See ya at Jags, most certainly not a day to be missed!!!! …. Tee Set

Kedaton, Sunday 16th November 2014

and its goodnight from them

Clearly in no rush at all to leave a warm and friendly clubhouse …..

The Day

A Tee Set Sunday can have no better start than a fast and trouble-free journey from home to the course and today was to see exactly that – with 25-35 minutes from South Jakarta being reported by almost everyone to what was once the “faraway” Kedaton out on the Merak Tol.

As ever, however, and this despite the explicit warnings and detailed instructions provided, we were to lose a couple of Tee Set Pilgrims having a go at Michael Seabrook’s current stranglehold on this season’s Vasco da Garma award. Arrival just before tee time was not to help their case however, and there remains only one week left to really, really screw up a journey and snatch the coveted trophy from Michael’s very firm grasp.

An excellent turnout of 50 Tee Setters  found it a little dark and threatening at the start, however, the weather was to prove kind and just got better and better, and even hot and sunny by the end, doubtless influenced by our prescience in having our very own Pawang Hujan on hand.

The last turn out at Kedaton was the just 29 Tee Setters earlier in the year – with the increase reflecting generally increasing attendance levels and, undoubtedly, the effect of the opening of the JORR’s “missing link” making for greatly improved access to all the Western courses. This effect will certainly be taken into consideration when the new committee meets in December to establish and confirm the programme for 2015. The class act hegemony enjoyed for so long by the Jagorawi Tol courses is clearly under threat.

Welcome backsJust one Newcomer to report in Paul Mercer who you may see in the reports as Peter Mercer thanks to Presidential nominee Craig Ewers; sharpen up Craig 🙂

Hope you enjoyed your round with us, Paul!

16 Welcome Backs to, erm, welcome back, with once a year visitor from Brisbane, Mark Blake, leading the pack at 46 weeks, having convinced his boss that the cheapest way for him to get to Hong Kong was via Jakarta. Nice work, Mark.

Other notables at 25 weeks were King and Pascal who always come as a pair of course, while Dawn Rea hasn’t been seen for all of 23 weeks, shame on you, Dawn!!

The Play

Skills

ShoesWell done Jako who, on a gentle upward curve with his game overall, hit his best score of the 16 rounds he has played with us since joining back in May, and secured Low Net for the first time wearing a pair of luminous green shoes that only a Saffa could take for a fashion item 🙂

Continuing a rich vein of form, Neil Mullins took Low Gross on a countback from Mark Blake while “fringe king” and Immediate Past President of Almost Everything sneaked Low Putts with just 25 of them on excellent greens.

Dawn - 1st SandyAmongst the minor prizes Mel Meeds shot a lopsided 52-39-91 to secure Most Improved, a remarkable three >=30 handicappers all waited until exactly the same hole to record their first par, to the disgust of the treasurer, while Dawn Rea didn’t hang about in taking 1st Sandy on her second hole as played

Boobies

skirts recordThe Treasurer’s grin on seeing that we had a new entry to the list of events achieving skirt double figures today was as broad as we have seen for a while; many thanks to all who contributed to that cheesy grin.

That list is just 7 long – and with Kedaton now appearing twice.

Shanes beer coolerSo a rich crop, though many chose an early exit to avoid the compulsory photo session in the pink tutu though Nick Sherman was to put in a great solo effort as you see opposite showing off Shane’s empty beer cooler for reasons that were not immediately apparent. Well done Nick.

As always, more detailed player by player results – and an opportunity to see some more photos of another great day on the Tee Set gallery.

2014 Match Play Championship

Matchplay champsJust 1 behind after 10 holes Peter ” Bushy” Bush was well in contention before a poor run of saw him go down 5 and 4 to the ever-steady David “Bags” Baglivo shooting around his handicap.

While Dave will only get his trophy etc on Tee Set Championship Day on the 30th November, a bottle of fine single malt donated by the President of Some Things went to him to celebrate while a bottle of JD courtesy of Jeff Durham went to Peter to ease the pain after his fine run to the final.

Dave immediately found he had acquired a new “best friend forever” in the shape of John “Malty” Suermondt who lost no time in helping make sure that the single malt bottle was to achieve “kosong” status by the close of today’s even more extended than usual proceedings.

Well done David, better luck next year Peter – and many thanks to Fernando Gaggino for taking on the poisoned chalice – and getting the 2014 Matchplay through to a successful, exciting and ahead of plan conclusion!

Nobody has EVER volunteered to take on the task a second time, so we are doubtless now in the business of looking for another mug doughty Tee Setter to take on this important role for the 2015 Matchplay Championship. If you would like to put something back into Tee Set by coordinating next year’s event then please drop us a line.

2014 Tee Set Championship

You may have noticed that we have updated the site with the logos of our 5 Gold Sponsors for the 2014 Tee Set Championship, many thanks to them all for allowing us to put together what we believe will be the best golfing day ever in Jakarta on the 30th November. We are now full up and with entry closed.

Next Up

Next Sunday we are back to Jagorawi for the final Interleague event of the year and the trophy presentation.

Format is a a token novelty round with teams of 4 using scoring based on a Stableford format (rules are on the score card)  The winners and runners-up will receive some fine bottles of Aussie wine to be shared with those who stay behind.

After the game there is a b-b-q dinner with steaks and beans from Kees De Korver and Indian food from Pradeep. A keg or two of beer will be provided or until the Interleague funds run out whichever is later. We need confirmation on who’s playing to get the catering right so please sign up as usual.

Tee off will be 12:30 with a shotgun start off all tee boxes. Based on previous events the day will be a blast so don’t miss it.

See ya Sunday! … Tee Set

Kedaton, Sunday November 16th

KedatonAs the rainy season finally gets into swing the challenge of Kedaton out on the Western flatlands is next up, when we are confident that the presence of our own Pawang Hujan, the remoteness from the rain prone South and Kedaton’s immense powers of recovery will see us through the day uninterrupted.

Last time we were there, back in February and in the rainy season, there had been heavy recent rains but the course played well. Net winner with a 72 that day was Thurmond Borden who registers far more than he plays these days, while Sam “Kelly” Westen took Low Gross with 79 off the stick.

Your scribe managed to find himself at the gates of Jagorawi last week and needing to reverse back to Riverside via Cibubur in a late challenge for this season’s Vasco da Garma Trophy, though your committee still has Michael Seabrook’s “Tangerang Tour” well ahead.

Pleased to tell you therefore that the following directions are provided by the Immediate Past President of Nearly Everything rather than yours truly.

Heading west on the Merak toll road, get into the left lane at Kilometre Post 30 which will bring you to the far left toll booth at Kilometre Post 32.

Do not enter any other booth because there is a road divider which getting the wrong side of will condemn you to hell.

After exiting the booth, take the flyover that crosses over the toll road. Drive north for a short distance and take the next left that takes you into the Kedaton Golf Estate.

Every time we visit Kedaton we lose a few so, if you are not experienced at the Kedaton run, then you would be well advised to follow the instructions very carefully.

Tee off will be at 11:00 from 1 & 10 with green fees of 650,00 roops including cart though Kedaton does offer one of Jakarta’s few remaining walking options at 110,000 less. Be warned that we usually get away a little early.

If you haven’t done so already then get yourself signed up here for another great Tee Set Sunday.

Tee Set Championship Trophies brushed upCouple of very important matters to report about the Championship, Jack Calcote has generously agreed to provide his legendary Smoothies once again this year, and the perpetual trophies have brushed up really well as you will see in the photo – and the inscriptions of past winners have also been brought up to date.

Riverside, Sunday 9th November 2014

... and they can read a putt too ....

… and they can read a putt too ….

The Day

Newcomers

42 Tee Setters at Riverside meant that the green fees were just 695,00 for Riverside, a great rate for this wonderful course in peak condition.

A couple of Newcomers to report in Yangjin Chung and Bill Ashby with Jangjin getting an early taste of the red folding stuff with a Sandy Par at just the second hole he played. We hope you enjoyed your golf with us guys and will return soon and often.

No doubt who took the  big “W” award this week with Billy McCarroll at a blow-away 79 weeks. Welcome back all!

The current President of a Few Things managed to just make the tee time in the last group at Riverside in a hectic week for Peter as, after being in the winning Kristal tournament team on Friday, he took the first flight back to Singapore on Saturday morning to play with VIPs from Thailand and on Sunday took the first flight back to Jakarta dressed in his golfing gear and drove straight to the Riverside course. Now that’s dedication.

The classic moment of the day was undoubtedly Pulpy George ranting and raving about having to play 3 holes without his cap and towel.

Pulpy dashed back to the clubhouse from tee box 13 to get them only to be told they were not to be found. Threatened to burn the place down until his caddie politely pointed out they were in the cart and that he’d been sitting on them the whole time.

Hard to live that one down Pulpy, sama-sama the 4 putt on a very tame #1 green as you played it 🙂

Another moment perhaps worthy of mention was Mel Meeds hitting straight right into the trees on tee box 15. This hole has the red tees to the left of the pond but significantly in front of the tree line Mel had just hit into. Nevertheless Mel insisted he should not receive a skirt because it could not be proven where the ball ended up. The Immediate Past President of Most Things, playing in the same flight, took full cognisance of Mel’s most excellent point but nevertheless immediately marked him down for a skirt.

Secretary Brenda returned after a couple of weeks on other official duties and managed to input over 100 score cards to the handicapping program. Prior to the championship on the 30th November a final review will be made by the committee, on licensed premises, to make sure there has been no massaging of handicaps. Brown envelopes gratefully received.

Mini shotgun

With the late 12:30 start, even a mini-shotgun start couldn’t prevent two flights failing to finish due to the torrential downpour just on a very early dusk. The dry season is well and truly over by the looks of it.

Flooding on the Jagorawi Tol meant the Riverside staff were forced into overtime with very few Tee Setters wanting to take on the crazy traffic conditions straight after the rain storm and cold Bintang bottles went into short supply very quickly.

A late departure from the clubhouse was to find the Tol in relatively benign condition with no more than a relaxing 1 hour journey back to Kemang

The Play

Skill

Giovanni celebrated his return from a 13 week absence by shooting the lights out in his extraordinary 11 under par to take Low Net, while Joseph Peries’ 9 week absence didn’t affect his game either, shooting a fine 73 off the stick in taking Low Gross.

Living life on an airplane has clearly sharpened up Peter Reichlmeier’s putting as he took Low Putts with just 28 of them while Steve Hulbert’s improvement of 16 (yes, sixteen) on his back nine to take Most Improved was the most arresting performance of the year in that category.

Boobies

There can seldom have been a more popular winner of Monster Putter than Geoff Thwaites’ 42 blows, a feat received with the loudest roar of the day while Craig Edwards 11 strokes prevented a major win by the Treasurer as there were 6 people breathing a sigh of relief behind him, all on 10 strokes.

Respectable crop of 6 skirts on the day but no photo unfortunately, so that will be some relief to them all

As always, more detailed player by player results and an opportunity to see some more photos of a very fine day on the Tee Set gallery.

Presidential Election

Pleased to advise that both Craig Ewers and Simon Reynolds have both put their hands up for election as Tee Set President for 2015. As last year, you will be able to cast your votes before we tee off on the 30th November at the Tee Set Championship.

Next Up

KedatonKedaton out on the Merak Tol is our destination this Sunday, a destination that should be a breeze for most with the JORR missing links completion.

A long and challenging course with excellent greens and more water than a stick could sensibly be shaken at and one which, ironically, we like to play in the rainy season, as it is just about as far away from the rain-prone Bogor area as we can get.

The food is good, the caddies rather professional on the whole and the clubhouse staff welcoming – though the beer prices will make your eyes water and you may wish to effect the usual mitigating measures.

The last time we were there saw the usual rich crop of latecomers due to the rather complicated exit from the Merak Tol fooling some. On Thursday we will give detailed guidance in the doubtlessly vain hope that the situation can be avoided this time.

Tee off will be at 11:00 from 1 & 10 with green fees of 650,00 roops including cart but it does offer one of Jakarta’s few remaining walking options at 110,000 less – but be warned that we usually get away early so, if you want to avoid having to make three new Korean friends like Mo Maharam did last time, don’t cut it too fine.

Get yourself signed up here for another great Tee Set Sunday at Kedaton.

PS yet another pair of sun glasses left behind, this time “Jupiter” and now to be found in the Tee Set kit bag.
