Sunday 15th October 2017: Cengkareng World Cup R2

The Day

Sunday saw us return to Cengkareng for the final round of the World Cup event. We arrived to slightly threatening winds and sky but the day remained dry and as usual it was a very enjoyable walk around the rolling fairways. Although we teed off pretty much on time,  the pleasant walk obviously was being enjoyed too much by some as we ended up being slightly slower going round this week albeit we all just finished in time.

Several changes to personnel in teams this week and quite a few extra players outside of the World Cup teams made for some additional administration but it was, as always, handled with the minimum of fuss by VP of almost Everything Ric Wymer and Secretary Brenda; a huge thank you to both of them for the organization over the 2 week-ends in making the event run smoothly.

Amongst the new players this week, we had 4 new-comers, Christian Sinz, Jack Fox, Sofie Bright and Desmond Wright. A warm welcome to each of them and we look forward to seeing you at future events. We also has a number of welcome backs of which Markus Veikkola (49 weeks) Mikko Koskivirta (45 weeks) and Chris Cromarty (31 weeks) were the most notable.

With both daily prizes and the overall  World Cup prizes to award we had a late finish in the club house rounded off by wishing Simon Reynolds a warm “au revoir” as he departs in a week to take up a new position as GM for Finna Golf course in Surabaya. Once Simon has settled in we will look to arrange a trip over to play I am sure.

The Play

Whilst the main event was the overall World Cup team event with the best 3 individual stableford  scores counting for the team, we also recognized several individual performances and results on the day.

Although hard and fast on the fairways, there were still some long carries from the Blue to the Red tees and so an impressive 8 skirts were recorded on a day. We managed capture most of them in the photo: Jaco Zaayman, Andrew Waite, Pekka Kiviola, Pascal Bekaert, King Tirto and Andrew Abram along with new-comers Markus Veikkola and Mikko Koskivirta.

First Birdie went to Stuart Wigley for his effort on hole 1, Low Putts to Desmond Wright for his 28 putts and First Sandy to Simon Reynolds for his double sandy effort on hole 5.

Best of the non-World Cup players was won by King Tirto for his net 72 effort for which he took home a bottle of wine donated by President Roger Finnie. Last of the individual prizes awarded on the day was shared between Anna Wilson and Wina Nugraha who both had 42 stableford points for their respective teams of UK and Srikandi1.

Best team scores on the day was won by Team UK of Simon Reynolds, Anna Wilson, Frank Wilson and Roger Finnie who each took home a bottle of wine for their team 109 points, just edging out Team Srikandi2 who scored 106 points on the day. Overall however the positions were reversed with Team Srikandi2 recording 195 points over the 2 days combined to win by 4 points from Team UK with Srikandi1 placing 3rd.

Final team placings are as above and the individual scores on the day here and as usual the photos of the day here.

Match-play

The match-play is down to the final with the departing Simon Reynolds sure to have played the winner having beaten Kunning finalist Jari Antikainen in the preliminary round and lost to Tony Horwath in the Emas bracket final. Good luck to both players and a reminder the match is due to be finished by 12th November so we can award the winners trophy at the Championship on 26th November.

Next Up: Pondok Cabe 22nd October 2017

Next Sunday see us return to Pondok Cabe for our second visit of the year. Whilst not the most challenging layout we play during the year, it is always a relaxed round and exceptionally good value both on the course and in the club house.

If you are interested to join us for the great value of Rp475k walking or an additional Rp225k (shared) for a cart please sign up here.

Sunday 8th October 2017: Tee Set World Cup of Golf Round 1

The Day

Tee Set’s 2nd Annual World Cup of golf kicked off last Sunday with 40 Tee Setters and their guests heading out in the 2-person better ball games to represent their respective country teams. The event is an opportunity to play a different format than the usual Tee Set Sundays as well as to welcome some guests who are not Tee Set regulars.

This year’s event is being held at Cengkareng where we received our usual warm welcome and hospitality. It was also a opportunity for most of the players to see the new holes which opened after our last visit for Battle Royale.

As usual, several teams got into the spirit of the day and got themselves dressed up in team colours.

Athough the round was a little slow due to heavy traffic on the course, the weather was kind to us which made for the usual pleasant walk around the course and afterwards we were able to relax over a cool margarita or poison of choice whilst Brenda and Ric sorted out the scores and winners on the day. This being made a little more complicated by the fact we discovered the actual layout by holes was not the same as our reference score card.

The Play

Teams were organized in matches against each other and these were competitive but for fun only. As the event is organized over 2 week-ends with next week’s results being added to this week’s scores we recognized only the top scores for the day.

4 teams scored an impressive 43 points on the better ball format including both Srikandi teams but they were beaten by the UK pairing of Frank Wilson and Divya Prakash who scored 46 points. However top team of the day was the Srikandi2 pairing of Santi Miller and Yuli Gaugil who recorded an impressive 49 points for their team.

Combined with the other pairing of Srikandi2’s 43 points this puts them in first place on 92 points followed by Srikandi on 86 points and UK on 82 points.

The team ranking in reverse order is list left and there is all to play for in the final round of singles to be played this week. See below to sign up.

Results for day by player and the inter-team games are here and there were plenty of photos taken on the day which you can peruse here.

A big thank you to Ric and Brenda for sorting out the organization and scoring on the day.

Next Up: Cengkareng World Cup Round 2

On 15th October we will return to Cengkareng for the final round of the World Cup event. Each player will play as a single scoring under the stableford system and the top 3 players for each team will have their score added to the above team scores to determine the winners of the World Cup event.

All players should please sign up as usual to confirm they can play.

Important note: Sunday’s event is open to all Tee Setters whether they play in the World Cup event or not. Should some teams be short a player, we will provide some fill ins from the spare players and for those not participating in the World Cup, President Roger Finnie will host a small side competition.

Whether you are playing in the World Cup event or just wish to enjoy the new Cengkareng layout please sign up here as usual. Tee time will be 12pm or very close thereto so please arrive in plenty of time for us to sort out the playing order.

Cengkareng 8th October 2017: Tee Set World Cup of Golf

30236541663_fd825dfd0b_z

Tee Set’s second annual World Cup of Golf has arrived!!. Won last year by the Ladies of Indonesia, they will be looking to retain bragging rights and the Trophy at this year’s event to be played over the next two week-ends at Cengkareng on 8th and 15th October. It will also be a first opportunity for us to play the new holes at Cengkareng which opened 5 weeks ago after our last visit.

Teams consist of 4 players and as a reminder these should be built on a geographical basis. We can have more than 1 side representing a country. Indonesia should be joined by at least several Australian sides as well as teams from Czech Republic, South Africa, UK, Germany, perhaps a Viking representation and the USA. Initiatives to create the teams come from yourselves so please get together and decide your captains and team members.

The winners will be calculated over the 2 week-ends. This week each team plays as 2 teams of 2-ball pairs and being scored based on their 2-ball better ball stableford scores. Next week, play will be as 4 singles with the 3 best stableford scores counting towards the results. The winning team will have the highest 5 stableford point scores combined over the 2 weeks so there will be limited prize giving this week.

New to Tee Set or do not have enough for a team? No problems, the Tee Set organizers will put together some “UN” sides from players not otherwise affiliated with other teams at the time of signing up.

Please sign up here as usual and in the comments section add your country and team members if these have been organized. All team members should sign up separately please. Price is the ever reasonable Rp750,000 walking with hover-boards available for an additional charge if you prefer to surf the fairways.

Sunday 1st October 2017: Matoa Nasional

The Day

With 20+ regular Tee Setters involved in the final round of the Jakarta Inter-League which was being played in parallel, Sunday saw a good turn out of 22 players to tackle Matoa Nasional, the home of the upcoming Tee Set Championship. A few sore heads after the ANZAC Ball were evident in the pre-tee off socializing but perhaps not the reason for a few frantic messages to the President to ensure we knew the Gaisler Family would be there “just in time”. However their late arrival and lack of warm up was not to affect their results as you will read below.

The smooth and relatively quick round was fortunate as a cloudy start gave way to a heavy rain storm resulting in the course being closed just as some of the groups were finishing. This resulted in the VP of Almost Everything Ric Wymer needing to apply an equitable score to any missing holes in order to be able to recognize the winners on the day.

A warm Tee Set welcome to our 1 newcomer on the day, Fitrat Ameer, and perhaps on an annual pilgrimage to Jakarta for the AFL Grand final week-end, after 52 weeks a warm welcome back to Max Strawhorn.  Thank you to Ric Wymer, Lis and Beby for ensuring the day ran smoothly.

The Play

Its not often these prizes get retained week to week but for a second week in a row, Kathy Scalabre won Most Improved for a 12 shot improvement on the back nine and Juju Juhairiah won 1st Par for Handicaps >= 30 for her effort on hole 1. Juju unfortunately had to give back half her winnings for her Most Strokes of 13 on a hole and with no skirts from the Men players, completing the line up of a Ladies only contribution to the Treasurer’s funds was Meta Sari for her Monster Putter effort of 40 putts.

A distinctly family affair amongst the Low Net category winners with both Daniel Gaisler and Jana Gaislerova making light of their late arrivals to take home Low Net A and Low Net B with a net 67 and 68, respectively. Here they were joined by last week’s big winner Laurie O’Connor who shot a more modest net 68 this week to win Low Net C.

Daniel being restricted by the 1 prize rule from taking other categories enabled us to recognize new comer Fitrat Ameer for his Low Gross of 80 shots and James Ross for Low Putts of 29 strokes  on the greens. Similarly, Matthew Cherrett also benefited as we recognized his First Birdie effort on hole 6.

Photos of the day can be found here and the detailed player results here.

Tee Set Eclectic

After completing the scoring, I am pleased to announce Laurie O’Connor as the winner of Eclectic Cycle VI and we will be presenting Laurie with the trophy at an upcoming event shortly. Laurie was one of 4 leading contenders entering into the last round and was pushed hard by Juju Juhairiah’s excellent round in week 4 of the cycle. Laurie however won his second monthly medal in the cycle to improve his score in the final week by 7 strokes and win by 2 shots. A summary of the cycle and the top performers is here.

Inter-League

Sunday was also the last round of the Inter-League and although Tee Set entered the week-end with an outside chance of winning the league, Sentul Swingers’ 8-2 victory over Tee Set Too confirmed them as worthy champions for 2017. Tee Set played out a 5-5 draw against Sandbaggers in what is always a close contest and finished overall in 4th place.

As a society Tee Set stepped up at the last minute to field a second side due to the late withdrawal of 1 team and therefore a huge thank you to all of the approximately 35 Tee Setters who put their hands up and represented our 2 teams over the 7 weeks of the competition. We had some excellent matches, high-lighted by beating the top 2 teams, and look forward to the end of season event on 19th November which will also double as a regular Tee Set week-end with a band and BBQ to follow. A summary of the season and final results and standings are all here.

Sunday 24th September Padang Modern Golf

The Day

The last Sunday of the month saw us heading back to Padang Modern Golf for a 3 in 1 golfing day with our regular Sunday event also being the September Monthly Medal and the final installment of Eclectic Round VI which had been held over from August.

A healthy turnout of 43 Tee Setters were there well on time and all organized for our published two tee start when we learnt of what is now becoming a customary late change to the arrangements. However, the Modern starters organized a semi-shot gun start off holes 1 to 5 in their usual efficient manner resulting in us all getting off close to 12pm after a little chaos as players had to find which hole and cart their bags had been assigned to.

A bright sunny morning had given way to the threat of some rain as we headed out and whilst a few small showers fell towards the start and end of the round, reminding us that the rainy season is not far away, the weather stayed mainly dry for us all to finish in good time. The course played in good condition and the scores recorded reflected this.

Two newcomers were welcomed this week, Andrew Shaw and Daniel Brown both pictured below getting to know their new golfing comrades.

Amongst the welcome backs we had Tim Knight after 95 weeks and Murray Samuel after 50 weeks.

A thank you to Beby and Liz Wymer for helping out with all the arrangements and scoring on the day.

The Play

Our Monthly Medal skill prizes were picked up by regular winner David Baglivo for his Long Drive effort of 245m and Ken Runyon for getting to 150cm from the hole for NTP.

Kathy Scalabre using borrowed clubs had a small prize giving session to herself as she took home the prize for Most Improved coming back 15 shots better on her back nine.

This being directly correlated to her Most Strokes effort of 15 on a hole and Monster Putter of 57 strokes with the flat stick. The one fine rule enable Kathy to at least retain half of winnings whilst also getting pictured with the Monkey.

A single skirt on the day enabled Kelly Chaisson to enjoy the full selection of the dress up collection. Low Putts was won by Jeff Landau who needed only 25 strokes on the greens, with First Birdie awarded to Rob Cheng and First Sandy to Efsi Hayati for their efforts on holes 1 and 8, respectively.

Tim Knight showed he is in fine form despite not playing with Tee Set for almost 2 years with a best of the day 75 for Low Gross. Juju Juhairiah despite shooting her Tee Set best ever round of 97 Gross, net 63, was pipped for both Low Net C and the monthly medal but took home First Par for Handicaps =>30 for her effort on hole 3.

Low Net C was awarded to former President, Pascal Bekaert who also shot his Tee Set best round of Net 62 where he was joined by Low Net B winner Dave Chew, net 65 and Low Net A winner Ken Runyon, net 67.

These excellent rounds where however not enough to take home the Monthly Medal which was won for the second time in 4 months by Laurie O’Connor with 47 stableford points. With the last minute cancellation of the VP of Almost Everything due to work commitments, we did not have the monthly medal, shield and Grand Slam Golf voucher to present on the day and will award these to Laurie at a future event. As a repeat winner we do have a file photo in lieu!

Photos of the day are posted here and more details of the player by player results here.

Eclectic Cycle VI

With both of Laurie’s Monthly Medal wins falling in the same Eclectic cycle, and already at the head of the leader board with 3 others, a straw poll of scores on the day indicates that he will have also won the Eclectic Cycle VI event too. However, the official tallying of results for the Eclectic is being done at the time of going to press and the result will be confirmed shortly.

Next Up

Next week sees us with competing events. The regular Tee Set event will be at Matoa Nasional which also plays well and is a very reasonable Rp650,000. Tee time is 11.30am and please sign up here if you are interested in joining us.

Inter-League is also taking place as the final round of matches at Jagorawi will involve both Tee Set versus Sandbaggers and Tee Set Too versus Sentul Swingers. Captain Roger Finnie is looking for players still so please contact him directly if you can play.

Pangkalan Jati: Sunday 17th September 2017

The Day

With Inter-league also being played on Sunday and therefore taking away several regular players for both Tee Set and other teams, a small but select group of 20 Tee Setters headed out to one of Tee Set’s old favourite courses, Pangkalan Jati.

A compact but tricky lay-out requires the use of most of the clubs in one’s bag as well as care and patience to come away with a good score. Pangkalan Jati’s penchant for catching the unwary is usually reflected in a low number of scores at or below handicap and this visit was no exception despite the excellent weather and playing conditions, with only 1 score under handicap recorded on the day. More on the results below.

As usual, after the 12pm rush to register and pay due the old booking system at the course, play got off smoothly and we were round in a relatively quick 4 1/2 hours; meaning we had plenty of time to enjoy a beer, recognize the winners on the day and still get away before sunset.

No new-comers or welcome backs of significant note this week but a big thank you from President Roger Finnie to Keith and Santi Miller for helping out with all the admin on the day so we could give our secretaries a Sunday off again.

The Play

With only 20 players on the day, we managed to capture 75% of them onto the honours board of the day above albeit the number of actual prizes and fines were relatively low making for a fairly short end of day presentation.

After last week’s blank, it was good to see 3 skirts this week with Chris Till, Lorenzo Marengo and Hal Loevy able to each get a good part of the outfit for the photo. Most Strokes and the coveted photo with the monkey was picked up by Goetz Ebbecke for his 11 strokes on 1 hole.

No putting awards or fines this week with everybody having a good day on the greens and the low putters already recognized for other skill prizes. Most Improved with a unusually low improvement for Tee Set was Manfred Borer who came back 5 strokes better than his front 9 to pip Meta and Hal by 1 stroke of improvement.

With VP of almost Everything Ric Wymer busy with the prize presentation photos, he failed to note that his effort on hole 3 was over-looked and therefore Richard Green took home the prize for First Birdie. Perhaps a beer to share next week Ric and Richard!

Low Gross for his 87 off the stick was awarded to Ryan Shepherd after President Roger Finnie was awarded Low Net A for his net 72. He was joined by Don Duttlinger who shot a best net of the day 68 to win Low Net B and Meta Sari who won Low Net C for her net 74.

Meta would also have won First Par for handicaps =>30 but for the 1 prize rule.

Detailed results of the day are here and photos of the day here.

As for the aforementioned Inter-League, Tee Set Too were playing the league leaders Tin Cups and a strong performance held Tin Cups to a narrow victory as our team went down 6-4 after losing the final game on 18th hole. Thank you to all the players representing Tee Set and the last round of Inter-league will be played on 1st October; more details are here.

Next up: Monthly Medal at Padang Modern Golf on Sunday 24th September

Sunday sees us return to Padang Modern Golf for the September Monthly medal where you have the chance to succeed last month’s winner, Tony Howarth, in taking home the winners medal, getting your name immortalized on the Monthly Medal Shield as well as receiving a Rp1,000,000 golf voucher sponsored by Grand Slam Golf.

With the cancellation of the final round last month, this Sunday is also the last round of cycle VI of the Eclectic. With 4 players tied at the top and a further 6 players within 6 strokes, there is all to play for in succeeding Craig Edwards as the Eclectic champion from Cycle V. For those in contention, you can check out your opportunities to improve your scores here.

As of going to press we are not aware of any complications this month and so we will revert to our usual 11.30am start time. Don’t be late!

If you are interested to join for the reasonable price of Rp770,000 including cart please sign up here.

Next Up: Pangkalan Jati 12pm Sunday 17th September

One of the old favourites to which we return from time to time, Pangkalan Jati is a unique and challenging course which will see you using rather more of the contents of your bag than most other courses in the Jakarta area.

We will be there again on Sunday for a midday start and green fees of Rp565,000 walking. Carts are available for a further Rp220,000 shared between 2 players  but you will need to make the sharing arrangements and settle up between the 2 riders if you do not want to lose out.

A reminder that their booking in system does not reconginze the tee time and so paying before 12pm will get charged at the morning rate: get yourselves ready and be prepared for a little scramble at the cashier desk at 12pm as we head out to the tee.

If you haven’t done so yet then sign up for the fun at PJ here.

For those playing Inter-League versus Tin Cups, Captain Roger Finnie will send you an email separately on the details.
