Sunday 10th December 2017: Cengkareng

The Day

Sunday saw us head to one of Tee Set’s favourite venues as we made our last visit of the year to Cengkareng Golf Course. As usual, the Management and Staff were well organized for our visit and we were able to enjoy a couple of refreshments and some breakfast in the Club House before heading out on time to the first tees.

The 3 new holes have further bedded in since our last visit and so the course overall played in good condition and, despite a few drops falling at different times during the round, we were able to complete our rounds without serious interruption and in good time.

We welcomed Hazlan Hezri as our 1 new-comer for the week and welcomed back Gerard Gesser after 164 weeks, Romeo Salvador after 76 weeks and Ronald Lim after 39 weeks. We look forward to welcoming you all back to another event soon.

Also back was our Secretary Brenda Mayland and thank you Brenda for assisting with all the organization on the day. Hazlan, Brenda and several others are seen here as the groups prepared to tee off. More photos from the day and prize giving can be found here.

The Play

Cengkareng’s greens were in their usual good condition and several players mastered their putter and returned a low putting statistic. However the large and undulating greens can catch the unwary and Monster Putter went to Albert  Arcenas for his 41 putts on the day. Most Strokes was shared by Matthew Cherrett and Paul Dowd, both perhaps feeling the effects of the night before and racking up 10 strokes on a hole.

Paul was able to re-coop his losses by being Most Improved for coming home 8 strokes better than his front 9. The skirt gallery is usually a healthy one at Cengkareng and this week was no exception with Andrew Shaw, Glen Menyennett, VP Bill Lloyd, Andrew Waite, Ronald Lim and Rusty Witwer all joining together for the photo.

On the skill prizes, James Ross won first Sandy Par which was also a Birdie on his hole 2 and Roger Finnie took home Low Putts for his 28 strokes with the flat stick.

Low Gross was won by Daniel Gaisler for his excellent 79 strokes on the day. Low Net honours were awarded to Mark Fiorello for his Net 68 in winning A Grade, Steve Moruzzi for his best net of the day 67 to win B Grade and Rusty Witwer for his net 70, with borrowed clubs, to win C Grade.

Congratulations to all the winners and detailed results can be found here. As this was also the first round of the Eclectic Cycle VII, Steve obviously takes an early lead but there is all to play for in the New Year when we return to Cengkareng for the remaining 3 rounds of this cycle.

Next Up: Monthly Medal Padang Modern

Next Sunday sees us head to Padang Modern for the last Monthly Medal of the year, being played earlier in the month so it does not clash with the holidays when many are away or busy with families.

Tee time is 11.30am and the cost Rp770,000 with carts. Please sign up here if you would like to join us.

3rd December 2017 Senayan National

The Day

With Sunday being part of a long week-end, we took advantage of the quieter traffic to make the short trip to Senayan National Golf course in the heart of the city. A bright and hot sunny day welcomed the 28 Tee Settters who turned out to join us and we were able to complete the round without any interruptions by the weather.

We teed off on-time at 12pm with our groups split across holes 1 and 10 with those on hole 1 following another group which included some novice golfers. This resulted unfortunately in a big difference in the pace of play between the 2 sides of the course: a smooth round off hole 10 saw these groups finish in just over 4 hours and able to enjoy a few refreshments in the club house before the groups off hole 1 came in an hour and half later. However, a quick turnaround on the scoring and results presentation still saw us off in good time to enjoy the rest of the evening.

Two new comers this week, Francis Cheng and Matt Kilgallon; welcome to Tee Set and we look forward to seeing you again at a forthcoming event.

A thank you to Bebe who looked after all the administration assisted by Lis Wymer who came along although not playing this week.

The Play

Continuing the trend of our new-comers getting straight amongst the awards of the day, we called up firstly Matt Kilgallon for his Skirt photo, Rudie Basson having already departed, and Francis Cheng for Low Putts for an excellent effort of 29 putts on what were fast and tricky greens.

The Most Strokes fine was “won” by Erik Milfors for his 13 strokes on a hole and Monster Putter was taken by Ken Runyon with 41 putts, just edging out 4 others on 40 putts. Ken was however able to offset his fine by winning Most Improved shaving 11 off his front 9 coming home. Richard Green won First Sandy for his effort on hole 15; both Ken and Richard benefiting from the 1 prize rule.

First Birdie went to Arthur Mallari for his effort on Hole 4 and Low Gross to Jeff Landau for his excellent 75 off the stick. Low Net A was won by Andrew Waite for his best of the day net 66 with Low Net B being won by VP Ric Wymer (net 71) and Low Net C by Nick Thomas for his second best of the day, net 67.

Detailed results of the day are here and photos of the day here.

Next Up: Cengkarang Golf Course

Eclectic Cycle 7 Round 1

Sunday sees us returning to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues. Whether you wish to enjoy a pleasant stroll or ride the a hover-board over the rolling fairways, Cengkareng is always an enjoyable experience with its well trained caddies to guide you round and its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

Sunday will also be the first round of the next cycle of the Eclectic and so if you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp750,000 please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual.

Senayan National: Sunday 3rd December

IMG_7579With next week-end being a long holiday week-end, we begin the 2017/18 Tee Set Calendar with a very short trip to the excellent but tricky Senayan National golf course in the heart of Jakarta. Although shorter than the other courses we play, Senayan tests all the clubs in the bag and has the ability to catch out the unwary.

However the pleasant walk  and shorter course usually makes for a quicker round and with traffic lighter over the holiday week-end, we can all expect to be finished in good time to enjoy a longer beverage after the round and still get home early. If you are interested to join please sign up here.

Cost is Rp800,000 walking and carts are available at Rp500,000 per cart so please team up if you wish to share the cost.

Tee Set Championship Update

We have now uploaded all of the photos from Sunday and you can see a full selection of these here.

Keith Miller has also made a video of day from the drone footage and this can be accessed via Youtube. It has lots of images of the day so when you have 30 minutes sit back on your couch and watch this on the biggest screen you have as there are some great arial shots best seen in wide screen. Thank you Keith.

Sunday 26th November 2017: Tee Set Championships

The Day

day summary

Sunday saw us up before dawn for our one early start of the year as we headed to Matoa Nasional for the 2017 Tee Set Championships. After registration, the early arrivals were able to enjoy a quiet breakfast washed down by a bloody mary from the bar and, if brave enough, go and get a mini-health check up from the Mayapada Hospital team before the round and partying to come.

At 6.45am we headed to the front for our event photo, then out to the carts for a 7am shot gun start via a short stop to pick up a smoothy or two and a hot dog supplied by our sponsors Asia Serv and Hot Hed, respectively.

TSC Group Shot

With the shot-gun start we were all off together across holes 1-13 and were able to get round without any interruptions from the rain despite some brief showers threatening at various points during the morning. Players were kept refreshed by our enthusiastic volunteers on the day who brought a regular supply of smoothies and drinks around to all the holes.

Keith Miller had his drone out and about on the course during the day and together with our roving photographers, they captured a huge amount of the action. We have well over a thousand photos to go through as well as the drone video footage so posting all of them will take some time. The first selection of photos from the start of the day are here and the rest will be loaded over time so do not forget to go back and check occasionally to see all the action and winners photos from the day.

After submitting the scores and showering, we headed upstairs to the function room to enjoy lunch, recognize the winners on the day as well as our prize winners of the year and afterwards, to party the rest of the afternoon away to the Singing President’s dulcet tones whilst the bar and margarita machine kept everyone refreshed.

26915602729_c5ce7d164b_z

As usual, we also had the Tee Set’s Got Talent session and you can check out a selection of the abilities behind the microphone and on the dance floor here; well worth a few minutes over coffee. The last stragglers left Matoa as dark fell with a few hardy souls kicking on thanks to the Shangri-la and Jaco Zaayman ensuring the most was made of the day.

The Play and After Play

After lunch Keith Miller opened proceedings with the election of the President for 2017/18 year and with Roger Finnie having only taken over during the year he was voted in for a full term unopposed by a rowdy cheer of affirmation. The President then thanked the members for their support for the day and during the year and round of appreciation was given to all the Committee members who make Tee Set run smoothly: VP’s Ric Wymer and Bill Lloyd, Web-Guy Keith Miller, Fixture Secretary Wina Nugraha and Secretary Brenda Mayland supported by Beby and Aisha.

Ric Wymer then recognized the essential support of our sponsors and a rousing cheer was given to each in appreciation of their support to Tee Set over the year and to success of the Championships: Asian Tigers, Kojo, Samson Tiara, Hotel Luwansa, Asia Serv, Hot-Hed and Schenck Process, Fugro, Ben Lines, Bintang Subsea, San Miguel, Grand Slam Golf and Mayapada Hospitals. We also thanked all the Matoa staff and management for again hosting the Championships.

Our longest serving member present, former President and regular stalwart Geoff Thwaites was called upon to give a toast to the success of Tee Set during which he also reminded us that Tee Set had come a long way from just the 4 members in 2006 to the well over 90 players and volunteers who turned up today and the 347 different players who have turned out over the year.

After conducting the door prize draws we then turned to recognizing the main prize winners of the year and the iron-man/woman efforts of those who had played during the year. All of the year’s statistics were around the room and over lunch everyone was able to see the summary of the year’s golf in Tee Set. Our winners over the year’s play were Low Average Gross Score Simon Reynolds (in absentia), Low Average Net Score David Baglivo and Low Putts Mark Johnson.

Match-play Champion Jari Antikainen and runner up Tony Howarth were presented with their Trophies by Match-play Supremo James Ross and the Monthly Medal Winners and Eclectic Winners for the year were called up for a photo session. A big thank you to James for running the match-play so smoothly again this year and to Keith Miller for putting together all the statistics of the year which can be found here: Tee Set 2016-17 Results

We then recognized our winners on the day with Brad Burness winning nearest to the pin on Hole 12 and Reni Riley and Ryan Shepherd winning the Long Drive prizes for women and men, respectively, on Hole 9. Low Gross Champion on the day was won by Ameer Fitrat for his excellent 77 on the day.

TSC Champions and friends

The victorious Tee Set World Cup winners then made a clean sweep of Championship podium with 3rd place Cucu Chandra and runner-up Maya Till joining 2017 Champion Santi Miller in collecting their trophies. Congratulations to Santi for her excellent round of Gross 76 and net 63 to take home the main prize on the day. A summary of the all the winners is below and all the detailed results on the day here: TSC Championship Results.

Matoa winner recognition

Another successful year for Tee Set and a big thank you to Ric, Keith and all the committee, sponsors and volunteers who made the Championships run smoothly. Of course Tee Set never sleeps nor misses a week-end so we are on to the new year…..

Tee Set Championships Matoa Nasional

The Tee Set Championship is now just 3 days away, taking place on 26th November 2017 at Matoa Nasional Golf Course so this is a last call for any members wishing to join our biggest day of the golfing year.

A 6am breakfast and registration followed by a 7am shot-gun start leaves us plenty of time afterwards for food, a few beverages and to party the afternoon and evening away with the band after we have recognized the major winners of the day, the Tee Set Match-play and Eclectic winners for 2017 and for the iron-man/woman efforts of those regular players during the year.

The event is always popular and we are limited to 100 players on the day. Places are available on a first come first served basis and there are already over 80 players and sponsors signed up.

Anyone else interested in playing and wishing to secure your place please register to play by going to the simple form you will find here and filling it in.

A brief run-down of the day:

  • From 5.30am mini-health check by Mayapada Hospital Leak Bulus who are also sponsoring a fantastic Hole-in-One prize
  • 6 am  Registration and Bloody Marys’ on tap to warm you into the day
  • 6.45am Group Photo at the front of the club house
  • 7am Shot-gun start: Hot Dogs provided by Hot Head and Smoothies from Asia Serv available on the course
  • 12.30pm-ish – Lunch with beers, wine and the frozen margarita machine keeping everybody refreshed and hydrated
  • Prize ceremony
  • Party the afternoon away thanks to the Singing President and his band
  • Monday morning……..best arrange important meetings for the afternoon!

After 2 years of being able to hold the price of the day down through having sufficient funds in hand to subsidize the event, the reality of fewer players during the year and some cost increases is that the event charge on the day will be Rp1.2m. We believe this still represents exceptional value for a full day of golf, fun and your goodie bag including the 2017 Tee Set Shirt and cap. We are discussing with Matoa for a price adjustment for Matoa members  and will pass on the savings accordingly to the relevant players.

A big thank you to our sponsors for the day and who support Tee Set through-out the year (as of writing):

  • Gold Sponsors: Asian Tigers, Kojo, Samson Tiara, Hotel Luwansa, Asia Serv, Hot-Hed and Schenck Process
  • Silver Sponsors: Fugro, Ben Lines
  • Bronze Sponsors: Bintang Subsea

Lastly, and on a similar vein, we are always looking for additional sponsors for door prizes or more and so if you are able to offer some gifts or other form of sponsorship please let Ric Wymer or Roger Finnie know as soon as possible.

Tee Set President Nominations

The Championships is also the time we elect our new President for the 2017/18 year and in order that we can prepare the ballot papers for the election, any further nominations for President should be received by VP Ric Wymer by 6pm on Thursday 23rd November 2017 (i.e., tonight)

Jagorawi Sunday 19th November

Apologies for the additional mail but to clarify some queries: This Sunday at Jagorawi is the regular Tee Set event which is also the final event of the Inter-League calendar. It is a fun day (not inter-league matches) with everyone playing in a fun team format so we hope to see as many Tee Setters as can join.

This Sunday sees us head to Jagorawi for the final event of the Inter-League calendar to be followed by the traditional end of league BBQ and prize giving. An early start as usual at Jagorawi with a shot gun start at 9.30am leaving plenty of time afterwards for some refreshments and food whilst still not being too late home. If you are interested to join at Rp1,100k please sign up here.

Our good sponsor, Richard Mau and his team at Hotel Luwansa have some vouchers for Jagorawi and there will be booth set up beside reception where you can buy the voucher on the day for the discounted price of Rp825k and then exchange it for your golf club registration with Jagorawi. It does not include caddy and carts so the club will take an extra payment for that, not a huge saving net but still enough to fund the BBQ cost or a couple of beers on the course as you wish. Thank you to Richard and his team for offering this to Tee Set members.

Note the BBQ fee is Rp150k which will be collected as you register and in lieu of our weekly prize fund donation.

Sunday 12th November: Matoa Nasional Golf Course

 The Day

Sunday saw around 35 Tee Setters head out to Matoa to get in some practise ahead of the Tee Set Championships which are now 12 days away. With DOGS playing at the same venue 28 of them were registered in the Tee Set competition and with the likelihood of rain later in the day, both groups were keen to get away early so we split the tees between the 2 groups.

Matoa members were also mostly keen to finish early so there was a quick turn-around on carts as the large group of early players came in and we went out but this did not stop some enterprising Tee Setters looking for other modes of getting around the course!

Indeed our fears of rain were well founded as the heavens opened and the siren went off as most groups had 2 or 3 holes left to play leaving the scorers needing to apply the equitable scoring method to complete the scores and calculate the winners on the day. However a special mention to VP Bill Lloyd and Richard Mau who bided their time with a few refreshments waiting out the rain and went out and finished their rounds after the storm abated.

2 new-comers this week and a warm Tee Set welcome to Matthew Allan and Dan Javier and we look forward to seeing you both back again soon.

The Play

Although Matoa yielded no skirts again with its friendly Blue to Red tee distances, the scores on the day were unusually high with only 1 round breaking net handicap. Congratulations to Divya Prakash Ahuja who shot an excellent 81 off the stick to score a net 69 and win Low Net A where he was joined by Singing President Craig Ewers (net 72) and Rusty Witver (net 75) as winners of Low Net B and C, respectively.

Low Gross went to Stuart Wigley for his equal best of the day 81 and Low Putts to James Ross for his excellent 26 shots with the flat stick.

John Suermondt maintained his winning run as First Par for handicaps >=30 with his effort on hole 1 and Most Improved went to Bill Lloyd for shaving 9 strokes off his front nine score, Bill was presumably out finishing his round as we missed a picture of him, but we did manage to capture Richard Mau who was awarded first Birdie.

First Sandy went to VP of Almost Everything, Ric Wymer for effort on hole 6 and our only Sandy of the day but he was looking bemused as he needed to hand back 1/2 his winnings for his fine for Most Strokes of 10 on a hole. Our only other fine being for Monster Putter which went to Joseph Reyes for his 41 putts on Matoa’s greens.

A thank you Ric for managing proceedings on the day and Beby for entering all the scores. Pictures of the day are here and detailed player results here.

We are discussing with Matoa for a price adjustment for Matoa members and juniors and will pass on the savings accordingly to the relevant players.

We will confirm further details closer to the Championships to registered players.

See you at the Championships!!
