Tee Set 34th Birthday Scramble, Matoa, Sunday 6th August 2017

89 Tee Setters (or most of them anyway) celebrating our 34th BIrthday

The day

Sunday saw us heading back to Matoa of course for our annual scramble event in celebration of Tee Set’s 34th birthday this time.

An almost overwhelming turnout of 89 players, our  highest ever turnout outside of the Tee Set Championship, was to be greeted by a beautiful sunny day and the President’s collection of 1980’s music to get everybody into an appropriately birthday mood while the Hot-Hed Hot Dog stand was doing its usual brisk business satisfying those in need of solid sustenance.

Although the numbers were significantly higher than we had imagined, Wina worked closely with the very accommodating Matoa starters to ensure that all 22 groups were able to get away at the same time with a shotgun start across 12 holes, this after the Prezz and Brenda worked hard to place the late arrivals into open slots as a result of a few no-shows.

Happily, everything fell into place in time for the obligatory photo to commemorate the occasion followed by a brief explanation of the special holes and the rules – leading to all 22 teams heading out perfectly on time at 11.30 to pit their wits against the course and the various novelty challenges awaiting them during the round.

Brenda was out and about all day cheering all the teams on, taking lots of snaps and providing smoothies on demand. Well done her.

After the round we gathered in the upstairs function room as usual to share war stories, a few beers and recognise the day’s winners.

President Roger thanked all for coming to share in our birthday celebrations and expressed thanks to our most generous sponsors on the day:

Bob Fleischmann and Hot Hed for the excellent hot-dogs

Jack Calcote and Asiaserv for their top class smoothies

Richard Mau and Hotel Luwansa for the amusingly themed and tasty birthday cake

Andreas Stowosky and DOCKS for the great turkey sandwiches

The VP of Almost Everything then gave the group a few reflections on Tee Set’s long history before raising a toast to some recently departed Tee Set stalwarts.

An then there was (nearly none) ..

Following the cake cutting, Roger paid  tribute to the fantastic work done by the HOGS group in supporting Indonesian kids afflicted at birth by cleft palate and cleft lip.

HOGS President Ralph Duckworth replied after which Roger presented Tee Set’s donation of Rp 10m to the HOGS.

To much acclaim, Richard Green matched the Tee Set donation and the ensuing whip round meant that over Rp25 million ended up in HOGS coffers on the day.

Tee Set is golf with love and hope.

Roger closed by offering a big thank you to all involved in making the event go so smoothly, the Web Guy (in absentia), VP Ric, Wina, Brenda and all the Matoa staff.

Overall a great day of fun and celebration was had by all – see you again next year when we fully expect to celebrate Tee Set’s 35th Birthday in some style 🙂

The play

A rather different array of prizes today with bottles of wine and golf balls featuring heavily!

Most drives by >= 30 handicapper was taken by immediate past Vasco da Garma Trophy winner Michael Seabrook for contributing 8 drives to his team’s efforts on the day, just one behind overall Most Drives winner Tony Howarth who contributed a full 50% of his team’s drives with nine off the tee. Both were to receive a bottle of wine in recognition of their efforts.

Also collecting a bottle of wine for their individual efforts were Ron White for his Nearest the Pin effort on hole 4 of 2.40m while Scott Schauer launched a huge 285m drive on hole 9 to take Long Drive – not with the planned 1980’s driver unfortunately as a small hiccup in arrangements saw that left in the bag at home. Oh dear.

Last but by no means least in the individual categories, the real Brenda presented Maya with a bottle of wine for her Nearest to the Brenda effort on hole 18.

For the team prizes there were many good scores with 19 of the 22 teams finishing with a net score under 60. The battle for 3rd place was a close one with 7 teams separated by a single stroke.

While The Gaisler Bunch’s equal best gross of the day 66 was only good enough for 9th with a net 56, the Sandbaggers of long drive winner Scott Schauer, late team replacement Richard Green, King Tirto and Jaco Zaayman pipped the other 5 teams for 3rd winning a bottle of wine apiece for their efforts in shooting a net 55.

Dede’s Demons’ gross 66, net 53.87, was good enough for 2nd, winning Dede and Pieter Nielen-Groen, Stuart Wigley and President Roger Finnie a bottle of wine and a sleeve of balls each.

The overall winners however were to be team EVI (no idea) comprised of Al Livingston, Kim Pham, Craig Binks and Most Drives winner Michael Seabrook. In addition to the day’s not insignificant bragging rights, they each took home a bottle of wine and 2 sleeves of balls.

More detailed results can be found here – while an amazing number of photographs of a great day are on the Tee Set Gallery.

Next up

Next Sunday sees us return to the delights of Riverside with a 12.30pm start and green fees etc including shared cart of 735,000 roops. If you are interested in testing yourself against this Greg Norman designed classic, then sign up here as usual.

In parallel there will be a catch-up Interleague day at Jagorawi with a 9.30am shotgun start on Sunday. Tee Set Prez and Interleague Captain Roger Finnie will be reaching out to the team to check availability.

See yah next Sunday ….. Tee Set

Tee Set’s 34th Birthday Scramble at Matoa – don’t miss it

ENTRY IS NOW CLOSED – 84 REGISTERED AND NO MORE ROOM .. Sorry!

Tee Set celebrates its birthday every year. As you pick yourself off the ground stunned by the depth of the insight that goes behind that statement, our 34th birthday is of course on Sunday and is most definitely not to be missed – if only for your chance to discover just what a delight eating a slice of the magnificent green themed Hotel Luwansa Tee Set birthday cake is!!

We have 12 3/4 teams already signed up for the fun on Sunday so if you are not yet amongst their number then join in here, either individually, or as a team by utilising the comments field . If registering a team then do let us know the team name you would like to fly under – the dafter the better.

The Schedule

Nothing too complicated about the schedule for the day but do please note in particular that Hot-Hed’s famous Hot Dogs will be available from 10:00 and that we will be having the group photo in front of the clubhouse, and under the special event banner as usual – at 11am so please don’t miss your chance at immortality.

Happily we will have a shotgun start off 6 holes so we should all finish around the same time(ish.)

Can we encourage all to wear the oldest Tee Set shirt you can find in your cupboard on the day? HOGS welcome to wear their own, erm, distinctive gear of course, leather always welcome!

Brenda will be travelling around the course during play, taking photos and giving out AsiaServ Indonesia‘s oh-so-refreshing smoothies, so please make her extra-specially welcome 🙂

Novelty holes

As mentioned previously, our 34th birthday event is intended, as always, to provide us with a chance to let our hair down and have a lot of fun with as many friends, family and fellow Tee Setters as possible.

If you have been paying attention you will not be surprised therefore to learn that we have 5 “novelty” holes planned for our Texas Scramble round and they follow, though first of all, and to your right, there is small clue for those who have never played Tee Set Birthday Scramble before – this is what “the Brenda” looks like. Both of them.

After some years of service she is looking a little faded – the one on the right that is, not the one on the left, that one is looking just as fresh as ever!

Scorecard

Not the usual one this week but rather one specially tailored for the event – this is what you will be filling in on Sunday.

A handicap list will be available to help you complete the card before play and, if you ask her nicely, then Brenda will probably lend you her calculator if you are unable to divide by six.

On the back of the scorecard will be some rules – please feel free to both ignore them and argue about them.

Prizes

Finally, we will be having even more startlingly generous prizes than usual on Sunday and, with many of them able to be administered by mouth, please don’t be shy, corkscrews will be available.

Good luck to all!

Looking forward to seeing you for the fun in the sun on Sunday! … Tee Set

Monthly Medal, Modern, 30th July 2017

The day

A fine golfing weather day and the usual influx of post-summer new arrivals helped swell the number of Tee Setters coming to Modern for July’s Monthly Medal to a healthy 45 players, an equal best Sunday turn-out since February.

5 Newcomers registered this week so a warm Tee Set Welcome is extended to Andrew & Octa Abram, Joe Feld, Paolo Giraudi and Paul Denman. Octa had played previously with Tee Set but since it was apparently well before our records began, we kept her with the Newcomers. Joe, Paolo and Paul took no time to get themselves in amongst the prize winners as you will see further down.

Welcome Backs were all post-holiday returnees with Joseph D’-Cruz especially happy to tell his playing partners all about his wonderful trip to St. Andrews during a blissful summer sojourn.

After last week’s debacle at Gading Raya, there was some concern that two competing afternoon competitions and slow morning rounds would again cause chaos with the finely tuned Tee Set arrangements. Modern’s starters were however once again to do us proud by recommending a 30 minute delay so they could clear 6 holes for a semi-shot gun start. This allowed us all to tee off in good order and a relatively smooth round thereafter saw all of us finished well before dark.

The later tee off time did however enable Ken Runyon to appear to be perfectly on time as he cut his arrival very fine even for the later start and indeed give Kathy Scalabre some additional time to try and find her favourite caddie despite the vaguest of descriptions.

A tip for Kathy, get your caddies HP number or take a picture of him/her at least!

The play

Modern again proved a good test of golf for the Monthly Medal with just 5 players breaking net par and she was once again to cough up a healthy return of 6 Skirts with perennial skirt winner, Immediate Past President Pascal “Pastis” Bekaert, being joined by Mel Cantarella, Stefan Thiele, newcomer Joe Feld and 2 unexpected guests: big hitting long drive favourite, Tony Howarth and the consistently inconsistent Fernando Gaggino.

Staying up for their photo, Joe and Stefan were also pictured for their equal most strokes on a hole of 10, although were  to avoid further fines through the kindness of the “1 fine only” rule.

With Modern’s greens once again playing true, we all had a good putting day which resulted in the Monster Putter staying in the bag for a second week in a row. Divya led the way with 23 putts but, because of the 1 prize rule, Paul Denman was awarded Low Putts for his 27 blows with the flat one.

Skirt winners Tony Howarth and Fernando Gaggino redeemed themselves and offset their fines by winning First Birdie and First Sandy respectively – Fernando taking the prize as Paul was otherwise occupied with Low Putts as above.

MOD K & MKathy Scalabre showed that owning only 2 clubs and having to rent the balance of her set pending her shipment arrival was no hindrance sharing Most Improved with her cart partner, Mike Webb, in shaving 7 strokes coming home after their front nine efforts.

Mel and Pekka

Continuing the theme of shared prizes Pekka Kivioja and Mel Cantarella shared First Par >= 30 Handicap for their efforts on hole 3.

Low Gross for day was awarded to Ryan Shepherd for his 84 off the stick, much to the surprise of playing partner, the VP of Almost Everything, who could only remember a series of duck hooks off the tee thus leading to a lively debate on the actual number of times Ryan was OB or somewhere near the left side of the course during the round yet still managing to outplay the rest of those present!

Divya continued to show the strong form displayed since having a new club fitting in picking up Low Net A Grade with a net 71, when he was joined in the prize giving photo by Low Net Grade B winner Karel Horak (net 71.) Low Net Grade C was incorrectly awarded due to our putting in an incorrect handicap – this will be corrected in the fullness.

The Monthly Medal special awards saw last month’s medalist, David Baglivo, take the Long Drive prize for his 233m effort and Richard Green awarded Nearest to the Pin for his second best of the day effort as Paulo Giraudi had already left.

Beware the injured golfer” as the saying goes so there was little doubt that Jaroslav Gaisler would take home the Monthly Medal and the Grand Slam Golf Rp1 juta voucher having spent the morning trying to play down his chances due to a supposedly “bad back”.

Congratulations for a great effort Jaroslav on your winning total of 40 points, you join a long and distinguished list of winners immortalised on the Tee Set Monthly Medal Winners’ shield.

More detailed, player by player results of the day here and lots more photos on the Tee Set Gallery.

Tee Set Eclectic VI – round 3

Sunday was also the 3rd round of the current Eclectic cycle and an initial review of the leaders scores indicates that things have tightened at the top. First and second round leader, Laurie O’Connor failed to improve his Eclectic score of 58 on the day, enabling Divya and Mike Harling to catch him, and with several other players not far behind.

The final round of the current cycle will be at the August Monthly Medal when there will be everything to play for. Check out the Eclectic page in a couple of days to see the updated leaderboard and for those in contention to determine where the best opportunities are to improve your score.

2017 Tee Set Matchplay

Mike Webb edged out Tom Grace 3 & 2 to reach the bracket semi-finals leaving just one game outstanding for Matchplay Supremo James Ross to adjudicate on as this round came to a close at Modern.

Bracket Semi-Finals up next for the remaining 8 players and with these matches due to complete by 3rd September.

Next up

Unless you are freshly returned from the moon then you will know it is “Happy 34th Birthday to Us” next Sunday, when we will be holding our annual fun Texas Scramble at Matoa. As if that were not enough fun we also have Hot-Hed’s Hot Dogs, gallons of Jack Calcotes (in)famous Smoothies, another magnificent birthday cake from Richard Mau’s Hotel Luansa – and of course some most generous prizes for the top 3 teams to finish on the day!

Our birthday is all about having fun and maybe remembering a little of our long history – and, most importantly everyone is welcome to join us!!

As always on our birthday we will adopt the Yayasan HOG for the day and will be making a munificent donation to their cause, a cause that has brought a life worth living to an astonishing near THREE THOUSAND Indonesian kids afflicted with cleft palate and cleft lip at birth.

The HOGS will no doubt also be passing the hat round for individual donations to this most worthy of causes on the day, so do please bring a little change!

If you haven’t already, then sign up here – if your intent is to register a team or part team then indicate the other players names in the “comments field” – and a fair handicap estimate if they don’t have a Tee Set handicap.

See you Sunday for the mother of all birthday parties!! … Tee Set

Next up: Monthly Medal at Modern, Sunday 30th July

Yes, it’s back to Padang Golf Modern on Sunday for our 48th Monthly Medal since the event started at Matoa back in February 2013.

Over the years we have used 7 courses, though two of them were one-offs as we transitioned between “homes”.

As you see to the left we have had 42 individual winners since the start with 10 players having won twice – and with joint winners on 5 occasions.

If you have never won, then this is your chance to add your name to the illustrious roll-call of winners, get your name on the Monthly Medal  shield and achieve immortality! If you have won before then there is nothing wrong with double or treble immortality – especially with the 1 million roops Grand Slam Golf voucher to go with it!

An 11;30 tee time from 1 & 10 as usual and green fees of a reasonable 770,000 roops. Sign up here for the fun and challenge of the Monthly Medal if you haven’t already.

Tee Set 34th Birthday Scramble

While you are in filling in form mode, sign up individually or as a team for the very special Tee Set 34th birthday scramble at Matoa on the 6th August. This is not an event to be missed!!

3rd Annual Asian Tiger 45 Hole Challenge

Finally for today, a number of well-known Tee Set characters led by Asia Tigers’ own Billy Lloyd have been holding an Iron Man type tournament here in Jakarta for the last couple of years and the 3rd is coming up in late August.

For the strong in leg and limb this is a brilliant day out in the sun for 45 holes – and participation means that you are helping the survival of the Sumatran Tiger – as well as challenging your own!

It will be held on Friday 25th August at Jagorawi this year – when you will get to play every one of Jags 45 holes! Have a look here for more details.

See ya at Modern on Sunday!! … Tee Set

Gading Raya, 23rd July 2017

The day

As one our favourite courses for its ease of access, good facilities and usually strong scoring opportunities, 38 Tee Setters turned out at Gading Raya on Sunday. Sadly we arrived to discover our usual 2 tee start on 1 and 10 had been cancelled and we were all forced to head out to Tee Box 1 – resulting in a train of 19 carts sitting waiting to tee off at peak.

The frustration of the later starters was palpable, however, the main casualty was the thinner than usual numbers at the prize giving as there was an almost 2 hour gap between the first and last finishers meaning some players had already departed by the time the prizes and announcements for the day were being made. #SAD

All-in-all a pretty disappointing and unacceptable piece of management by Gading and we have cancelled our next planned visit there in September and will instead book a course more likely to keep their promises. Actions have consequences.

At least the weather was kinder as,  while somewhat cloudy skies threatened rain early on, none was to materialise.

Keith Gorman, pictured, was given a warm Tee Set welcome as our sole Newcomer on the day – enjoy your golf with Tee Set Keith – and come back often!

Another huge Welcome Back this week in Rosie Putri at 119 weeks (more than 2 years!) and Guntoro and Pekka Kivioja after 24 and 21 weeks, respectively. Not so long next time y’all!

At the end, President Finnie (the Web Guy has yet to land on a suitable moniker) took a few moments out to recognise those stalwarts supporting Tee Set week in and week out.

Ric Wymer is of course our all time (well since records began in 2012) leader with around an 80% attendance record and he was called out with other “150 Events Club” members present on the day, Wina Nugraha and Santi Miller.

Immediate past Singing President Craig Ewers and Mike Webb were also recognized for having reached the 100 Tee Set rounds played mark.

You may recognise this lot, they’ve been round long enough….

 The play

The longer than usual rough, particularly around the greens, caught several players out and scoring was a little higher overall than normal for Tee Setters at Gading Raya. Notable mentions for Mike Riley’s amazing 250 yard drive (more below) and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly which characterized the rounds of Fernando Gaggino and Pekka Kivioja which saw both of them both appearing in a wide range of “award” categories and causing mayhem in  the working out of prizes and fines, not least due to the one prize rule.

Andrew Waite, Fernando and Juju displaying the well-gotten gains for winning their respective Grades

After much effort sorting out the prizes, Fernando was awarded Low Net A for his roller-coaster 68 while Andrew Waite’s best of the day Net 67 took Low Net B and in Pekka’s absence, Juju Juhairiah’s 77 was enough to take  Low Net C.

Pekka had the only par for HC >= 30 so with the 1 prize rule in operation as always, no prize awarded this week for that category.

In the interests of equity and symmetry Pekka’s full house of booby awards as he pulled in Monster Putter, Most Strokes of 11 and a Skirt was to attract only one fine.

Mike Riley’s 250 yard drive mentioned above consisted of 150 yards forward followed by a 100 yard rebound courtesy of a well-placed tree and 10 bounces along the cart path, much to the merriment of his fellow players.

To add to Mike’s indignity was of course added a skirt though happily he was to be far from alone with another 8 players having to cough up for the Treasurer’s Championship Fund – a bare majority of them captured in the photo below.

Not an unexpected winner of Low Gross this week …

Fernando would have also had Most Improved of 11 but for the one prize rule, with the prize awarded instead to a very happy Bill Lloyd who shaved 10 strokes of his front 9 score.

No 1st Sandy awarded as both Andrew and Fernando (again) were already winners.

1st Birdie went to Jaco Zaayman for his effort on hole 3 while the President managed, with the aid of some good chipping, to turn 18 missed greens in regulation into a winning Low Putts total of just 26 putts.

Last but very far from least, Richard Mau had the best round of the day taking Low Gross for his fine round of 80 off the stick.

More detailed player by player results of the day can be seen here while there are plenty more photos on the Tee Set Gallery thanks to secretary Brenda.

2017 Tee Set Matchplay

Two matches completed today with Jari Antikainen edging out the extremely dangerous former two-time winner David Baglivo 2&1 while Santi took out Marcelo 4 and 3.

A reminder to send the results in by email to James Ross – and also that next week is the last of the current round before James makes determinations about who goes forward should that be necessary.

Tee Set’s 34th Birthday Texas Scramble

1983 saw the birth of Tee Set, a rather impressive 34 years ago – before at least some of our younger members were born!

To celebrate this auspicious event, we are returning to Matoa on Sunday 6th Augusr, the scene of  last year’s Birthday Scramble and with pretty much the same popular format.

Teams of four will be selected and named by yourselves as far as possible and each team handicapped on the basis of individual handicaps suitably adjusted. Fuller details of the format and rules are here.

This will once again be a FUN event for everybody regardless of skill level! Bring along your friends/wives/girlfriends/boyfriends/jaga to join in; for those of you who haven’t attended our birthday scramble before, it really will be that sort of day.

Tee off will be from 6 tee boxes at 11:30 in a shotgun start. Green fees will be 600,000 including a shared card.

Sign up here as a team or as an individual – and leave it up us to sort out from there.

Next Up

Last Sunday of the month so it is Monthly Medal time on Sunday at our invariably fine hosts at the Robert Trent Jones III designed Padang Golf Modern of course.

Tee time of 11:30 from 1 and 10 and green fees of 770,000 roops including shared cart.

Sign up here to join the fun in the sun and take your chance at immortality by getting your name on the Monthly Medal Shield – and receiving the 1 juta Grand Slam Golf voucher that goes with it.

See ya at Modern! …. Tee Set

Next up, Gading Raya, Sunday 23rd July 2017

Gading Raya is one of Tee Setters’ favourites and deservedly so with an excellent course and top class faciliites being complemented by getting there from the centre or the South a (relative) dream.

Last time out, and in perfect conditions, Tee Set set the course on fire, at least in relative terms, with plenty of birdies and sub-par rounds and a Monster Putter maximum of just a miserable 38 putts!

Been a while since we updated the rounds played league table going back to the 1st Jauary 2012. The Vic-President of Almost Everything occumpies his usual position of course while there is an interestingly large number of people around the 100 events played mark.

A relatively early 11am tee off from 1 and 10 on Sunday – and green fees of 950,000 roops including a shared cart. Sign up here for the fun in the sun

Pangkalan Jati, Sunday 16th July 2017

The Day

A pretty decent turnout as usual at PJ with 34 Tee Setters turning up on a blessed weather day, and with the field getting round the course in an acceptable 4.5 hours making it especially blessed. The course was also in good condition with none of the spiking issues we have seen on other courses recently, and friendly enough that no one had the 40 putts required to qualify for the “Monster Putter ‘Prize’ ”

Volunteers queueing up to reprogram PJ’s billing software …

We did however have the usual PJ pantomime about not being able to settle one’s green fees for the cheaper afternoon round before midday, though a couple of Tee Setters found that simply leaving a credit card with the cashiers five minutes before seemed to be acceptable. All completely fixable nonsense.

Three Newcomers to welcome today in Shaun Dickson, Edwin Liew and Pat Baumgartner. A warm welcome to you all.

Great to have Edwin visiting from Brunei in the group today, it was priceless to watch Simon Reynolds’ reaction to not winning Low Gross for once!

A couple of notable Welcome Backs in Christian Molau whose return to Denmark more than three years ago makes sure he tops the leader board today with Andrew Chee in second place at a mere 58 weeks.

Christian is here on a family visit for a couple of weeks only and tells us that the last time he played was indeed with Tee Set all those 157 weeks ago – and a certain rustiness was indeed evident in his play, though his capacity for Danish curses seemed undiminished, averaging much better than one per hole.

With a malfunctioning printer being handled by Ric writing down the results from the computer on paper somewhat indecipherably, Roger sat out from his usual MC-ing the prize giving allowing Ric to take on the challenge of reading his own writing and, in particular, making sure we all had rides or a map to the Tee Set BBQ immediately following. The latter at least seemed to work with everybody making it in good time as far as we know.

PJ proved once again what an attractive overall package it provides. While the days of it being our home week-in week-out are long gone, it is a fine element in our overall mix – and, thankfully, always ready and willing to take us in the short-term fixture “emergency” situations that crop up from time to time.

The Play

PJ is no walkover and sub-par nets were as rare as hen’s teeth, however Axel, Tony and Mike took the A, B and C Grade honours respectively, with the pick being Tony’s net 67, a result that will surely attract the attentions of the handicapper 🙂

Newcomer Edwin Liew played  the course sight unseen but had the game to shoot a 9 over par 81 and take Low Gross honours. Clearly Interleague material however commuting from Brunei once a month might prove a challenge too far.

This week’s quiz question – who’s that hiding in the wig?

Huge Welcome Back Christian featured heavily, managing to take Most Strokes on a hole and a skirt as well as Low Putts in the absence of Jochen Sautter.

Christian was joined by 8 others in the Skirts hall of shame; bringing a satisfied grin to an otherwise rather financially challenged Treasurer today.

More detailed player by player results here and photos of the day can be found on our gallery.

2017 Tee Set Matchplay

The matchplay moves on with wins for Simon Reynolds who drained a long putt on the 18th green to edge out Roger Finnie while Mick Dodsworth took full advantage of his large handicap to overcome Jon Pipe – with this match also going to the 18th.

The Tee Set BBQ

Our entrant for “Masterchef Australia” this year ….

The hardest working man on the night …….

We mentioned in our last post that the Treasurer was “loosening the purse strings” a little for the Tee Set BBQ at the Immediate Past Singing President’s new gaff in Cipete.

Sting Mullins showing off his formal wear …

That was to prove something of an understatement however as we were to be assailed on all fronts by beers, quite superb Margaritas and much else on an industrial scale – and this to wash down similarly generous amounts of fine steaks, sausages and pork chops.

A huge array of great sides too thanks to the efforts of Yunita especially but also Santi.

And last but not least a big thank you to Craig for doing such a great job on the barbie – he alleged he hadn’t done one since he left Australia in 2010. It didn’t show.

The cute if a little chubby fellow above was not, to the undoubted relief of Neil Mullins back in Aussie, to feature amongst offerings from Craig’s BBQ, instead proving the centre of attention wherever he wandered during the evening, a shade more formally dressed than the rest of us.

Wimbledon corner

The venue was just about a perfect for such an occasion with lots of space to spread out and socialise with fellow Tee Setters, including a group passionately following the Men’s Finals from Wimbledon – Federer seemed to be a popular winner. The only underused asset was, in spite of most predictions, the swimming pool, a pool which was to receive attention only of the voluntary kind, this from just young Tom Miller and his Dad.

Our bigly thanks to Craig and Yunita for hosting the event and all the hard work they put in to making it happen and giving us such a fantastic evening. A word of thanks also to today’s Grade B winner for ensuring that the Treasurer’s purse opening didn’t totally bankrupt us! And finally thanks to the Official Tee Set Mixologist, Jamal, for making surely the best Margaritas to be found in Jakarta and its environs if not the whole of Indonesia. Contact Ric if you ever need Jamal’s services at really rather reasonable cost.

Plenty more photos of the evening’s fun can be found on our gallery here.

Next up

Back to our long procession of top class courses this weekend with a return to the delights of Gading Raya.

An 11am tee off from 1 and 10 and green fees of 950,000 roops including a shared cart.

Sign up here as usual to join in the fun.

Pangkalan Jati, Sunday16th July 2017

Fear not, there are plenty of more conventional toilet facilities at PJ

The years when Tee Set played Pangkalan Jati (PJ) week in and week out are long gone of course as we sought out more variety and quality for our Sunday outings.

The place does however hold a firm place in the Tee Set collective heart and occasional returns are always well supported and enjoyed – PJ is a unique and challenging course which will see you using rather more of the contents of your bag than any other in the Jakarta area.

We will be there again on Sunday for a midday start and green fees of Rp565,000 walking – and with a further Rp220,000 for a cart to be shared if possible between 2 players at that price – so make sure you have someone to share your cart with you or you will lose out.

If you haven’t done so yet then sign up for the fun at PJ here.

As a bonus, and after prize giving on Sunday, all Tee Setters are invited to join in a BBQ at the home of the former President of Singing Skills, Craig Ewers, when the Treasurer has agreed to open the Tee Set purse strings a little and fund generous amounts of great meat, lots of beers and some very fine Margaritas by Tee Set’s official Mixologist. Not to be missed – so please indicate if you will be coming in the comments section when you register for play.

Bumi Serpong Damai, Sunday 9th July 2017

The Day

For the first time since April last year, Sunday was to see us visiting Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD), one of the very top courses around Jakarta, with 36 Tee Setters joining along with 5 guests from Tin Cups as we managed to reel in one of our outstanding Inter-League matches in parallel with our regular Sunday outing.

the practice green was in superb condition – unlike some of its brothers on the course

With the Inter-league match ongoing several players arrived early for a warm-up only to discover a wedding being set up on the practice range and we therefore practiced our pre-match gossiping and breakfasting instead when there was certainly plenty of lively chatter before we teed off bang on schedule at 11:42.

Brilliant sunshine welcomed us along with greens which were playing reasonably well despite the usual Lebaran maintenance so it was a little disappointing not to have been forewarned of the ongoing fairway maintenance impacting several holes.

Overall play went very smoothly although some got caught in a heavy rain shower for a few holes towards the back-end of the round however not enough to stop any of the groups finishing their rounds and certainly not affecting the scoring as several good rounds were posted as you will see below.

The wedding mentioned above was also to be affected by the heavy rain and was moved indoors resulting in our being consigned to one of the club’s cavernous underground bomb shelters.

Finally a warm Tee Set welcome to Erik Streed and indeed a couple of notable Welcome Backs in Todd Roesler after a quite outstanding 133 weeks and Hannu Hirvela after 49 weeks. We hope to see all of you frequently at future events 🙂

The Play

Some excellent scores today were headlined by Bill Lloyd’s net 65 to win Low Net B Grade where he was joined in the winner’s circle by Axel Hertzke  and Matt Otto as Low Net A and C Grade respectively; Matt benefiting from Tom Alcedo’s absence and Debbie already picking up a prize.

Newly elected President Roger Finnie was to demonstrate that the responsibilities of his position are not affecting his game overmuch in continuing his good form with an 82 off the stick to take Low Gross.

Amongst the skills prizes, Alastair Livingston won 1st Birdie for his effort on hole while Rudie Basson took First Sandy par as early as hole 2.

A 3 way tie for 1st Par >=  30 by Debbie, Lina and Tom but with Tom AWOL only the ladies managed to grace the picture.

Liz Wymer managed to more than offset her Monster Putter fine for a field leading 41 putts by taking Most Improved in shaving off a full 10 strokes coming home.

A paltry solo skirt from Vanco Pop-Petrovski today for which we express out appreciation, however, the Treasurer’s disappointment at this unusually low contribution to Tee Set funds was more than made up for by a 4 way tie for Most Strokes of 10 shots by all of Hannu Hirvela, Kim Pham, Matto Otto and Todd Roesler. Well done all.

Fuller, player by player, results are here while more  pictures of the day can be seen on the Tee Set Gallery.

Interleague versus Tin Cups

Tee Set played Tin Cups in a catch-up match and it was a very tight affair with 4 of the games being decided on the 18th green. Unfortunately for us, Tin Cups shaded those matches 5-3 on the way to an overall 7-3 win. Congratulations to Tin Cups and thank you to the Tee Set players who stepped in and played for us in the absence of many of our regulars due to holidays.

Tee Set Matchplay 2017

A reminder that the current round of the match-play is due by 30th July and at the time of writing, 6 of the 8 games in this round remain to be played. If you do not wish to have the result determined at the mercy of the Match-play Supremo and current Champion, James Ross, please arrange for your games to be played over the next 3 weeks. A reminder also to send your result to James by email afterwards as usual.

Schedule update

We have had a few changes to the schedule for a variety of reasons so please check out the the updated schedule. The most notable change, as we announced on Sunday, is that Tee Set’s 34th Birthday Scramble will now be held on 6th August – more details on that will follow shortly.

The Singing President’s BBQ

Next Sunday, and after play at Pangkalan Jati, we will have a BBQ at the conveniently located, just off Jl. Antasari home of the still Singing but now Ex-President, Craig Ewers.

Having spent his 2 year presidency in a loft of Ann Frank proportions, opportunities for hosting such an event were limited however a recent move South to a proper house means he can finally meet his contractual obligations. With a noon tee time at PJ we expect the festivities to kick off around 6pm.

Spouses, partners and kids are welcome to join even if not playing on the day, with food, beers. softies and the ever popular Margarita machine all being funded from Tee Set coffers. You are however encouraged to bring along a little wine and any other beverage you might favour to ensure the evening goes well.

To give us an idea on numbers please indicate in the comments section of the usual sign-up form if you intend coming to the barbie  – and, if so, with how many “significant others?”

An address and a map to Craig’s house will be sent by separate e-mail to all those who tell us they intend coming.

Next Up

As mentioned. Sunday has us returning to the friendly but tricky-in-parts Pangkalan Jati at Rp565,000 walking and a further Rp220,000 for a cart to be shared between 2 players wishing to avoid the very moderate hilly bits of a walking friendly course – one of the few remaining courses in the Jakarta area providing the opportunity to stretch your legs.

Sign up here to join the fun if you haven’t already.

See yah at PJ and the rest! …… Tee Set

Next up: Bumi Serpong Damai, Sunday 9th July 2017

Your hard-working committee have brought you a bunch of high quality courses recently and Sunday will be no exception as it sees us at Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) at the end of the Serpong Tol, a course which surely rates at or near the top of any league of Jakarta area courses – we are in for a rare treat.

Green fees including shared cart are, at 999,000, somewhat more than we normally go for, and this even though your committee bargained hard. They did however manage to get a very considerable reduction from the Sunday walk-up guest rate as you will see if you wander around the course’s website here. First tee time will be 11:42 off tee boxes 1 and 10.

With more than 30 already signed up it should be a quite brilliant day so, if you haven’t already, sign up here to join the fun!

Tee Set’s 34th Birthday Bash Scramble

Yep, it’s that time of year again, time for yet another Tee Set celebration of our birth back in 1983 when men were men and woods were made out of, erm, wood. This is always a fun occasion so do get your friends and family involved, it certainly is one where ability really does not matter at all.

Last year’s Birthday bash format was hugely popular and we are therefore not going to mend it. 4 player scramble teams with a team handicap derived from the individuals handicaps – and with birthday party hats, lots of liquid prizes and, we hope, lots of door prizes too depending upon the generosity of our membership!

The exact details, including the date which will certainly be in August and not as scheduled on our calendar, will be revealed only next week. You will be able to sign up individually or as a team next week so start thinking about your team – and your team name, as you will see below they were pretty graphic last year.

See yah at BSD!! …. Tee Set
