89 Tee Setters (or most of them anyway) celebrating our 34th BIrthday
The day
Sunday saw us heading back to Matoa of course for our annual scramble event in celebration of Tee Set’s 34th birthday this time.
An almost overwhelming turnout of 89 players, our highest ever turnout outside of the Tee Set Championship, was to be greeted by a beautiful sunny day and the President’s collection of 1980’s music to get everybody into an appropriately birthday mood while the Hot-Hed Hot Dog stand was doing its usual brisk business satisfying those in need of solid sustenance.
Although the numbers were significantly higher than we had imagined, Wina worked closely with the very accommodating Matoa starters to ensure that all 22 groups were able to get away at the same time with a shotgun start across 12 holes, this after the Prezz and Brenda worked hard to place the late arrivals into open slots as a result of a few no-shows.
Happily, everything fell into place in time for the obligatory photo to commemorate the occasion followed by a brief explanation of the special holes and the rules – leading to all 22 teams heading out perfectly on time at 11.30 to pit their wits against the course and the various novelty challenges awaiting them during the round.
Brenda was out and about all day cheering all the teams on, taking lots of snaps and providing smoothies on demand. Well done her.
After the round we gathered in the upstairs function room as usual to share war stories, a few beers and recognise the day’s winners.
President Roger thanked all for coming to share in our birthday celebrations and expressed thanks to our most generous sponsors on the day:

The VP of Almost Everything then gave the group a few reflections on Tee Set’s long history before raising a toast to some recently departed Tee Set stalwarts.
An then there was (nearly none) ..
Following the cake cutting, Roger paid tribute to the fantastic work done by the HOGS group in supporting Indonesian kids afflicted at birth by cleft palate and cleft lip.
HOGS President Ralph Duckworth replied after which Roger presented Tee Set’s donation of Rp 10m to the HOGS.
To much acclaim, Richard Green matched the Tee Set donation and the ensuing whip round meant that over Rp25 million ended up in HOGS coffers on the day.
Tee Set is golf with love and hope.
Roger closed by offering a big thank you to all involved in making the event go so smoothly, the Web Guy (in absentia), VP Ric, Wina, Brenda and all the Matoa staff.
Overall a great day of fun and celebration was had by all – see you again next year when we fully expect to celebrate Tee Set’s 35th Birthday in some style 🙂
The play
A rather different array of prizes today with bottles of wine and golf balls featuring heavily!
Most drives by >= 30 handicapper was taken by immediate past Vasco da Garma Trophy winner Michael Seabrook for contributing 8 drives to his team’s efforts on the day, just one behind overall Most Drives winner Tony Howarth who contributed a full 50% of his team’s drives with nine off the tee. Both were to receive a bottle of wine in recognition of their efforts.
Also collecting a bottle of wine for their individual efforts were Ron White for his Nearest the Pin effort on hole 4 of 2.40m while Scott Schauer launched a huge 285m drive on hole 9 to take Long Drive – not with the planned 1980’s driver unfortunately as a small hiccup in arrangements saw that left in the bag at home. Oh dear.
Last but by no means least in the individual categories, the real Brenda presented Maya with a bottle of wine for her Nearest to the Brenda effort on hole 18.
For the team prizes there were many good scores with 19 of the 22 teams finishing with a net score under 60. The battle for 3rd place was a close one with 7 teams separated by a single stroke.
While The Gaisler Bunch’s equal best gross of the day 66 was only good enough for 9th with a net 56, the Sandbaggers of long drive winner Scott Schauer, late team replacement Richard Green, King Tirto and Jaco Zaayman pipped the other 5 teams for 3rd winning a bottle of wine apiece for their efforts in shooting a net 55.
Dede’s Demons’ gross 66, net 53.87, was good enough for 2nd, winning Dede and Pieter Nielen-Groen, Stuart Wigley and President Roger Finnie a bottle of wine and a sleeve of balls each.
The overall winners however were to be team EVI (no idea) comprised of Al Livingston, Kim Pham, Craig Binks and Most Drives winner Michael Seabrook. In addition to the day’s not insignificant bragging rights, they each took home a bottle of wine and 2 sleeves of balls.

Next up
Next Sunday sees us return to the delights of Riverside with a 12.30pm start and green fees etc including shared cart of 735,000 roops. If you are interested in testing yourself against this Greg Norman designed classic, then sign up here as usual.
