Pondok Cabe, Sunday 3rd January 2016

PC HilitesThe Day

The chaos that was the Cirendeu road on Wednesday was transformed by today to no more than a little untidiness with its major diversion removed and no more than a 100 meter section not finished.

Happily all those taking any one of the three routes on offer were to have a smooth journey with only one exception, Billy Lloyd, who was to bitterly complain of a terrible journey. One wag suggested that the most likely cause was in fact his car being unable to cope with the vast quantities of stubbies on board. I guess we will never know the real reason.

Blue skies, a temperature as high as any in 2015, an empty course in tip-top condition and an early start were to be the reward for the 23 Tee Setters who made it to the first round of 2016 – most made it around in less than 4 hours with players able to take a late postprandial beer or two and still leave well before darkness fell. That doesn’t happen every Sunday.

In a development not seen for many a long day we were to have NO Newcomers today, while Richard Bolton comfortably managed longest Welcome Back at 28 weeks. It showed, Richard!

The immediate past committee member for Web Affairs managed to take out one caddy when his cart hit a drainage cover with its angle tilted up – in the light rough causing the cart to jump two feet in the air, and not long after scared the bejeezus out of a couple more of them with a most vicious duck hook as they idled under the shade of tree 50 meters in front of the tee. Not a great day for caddies.

Many thanks to Santi for showing up to help with the scoring after the game – and this despite an injured toe 🙂

The Play

PC Summary

PC - WinaPlaying her very best round for a long time Wina came home with an excellent net 65 in the the best result of the day and B Grade and a rather high net 78 was good enough, in the absence of the superstars, to see Axel win Grade A while Arthur Mallari may see himself up a grade next week in taking Grade C with a net 66! Well done to them all.

As he still hasn’t a handicap, our visitor from Kiwiland, Dominic May, took the only major prize open to him with an 85 off  the stick, and if Brenda gets the scorecard backlog into the system this week he should have a handicap for next week. Grade A in case you were wondering, Dominic.

The usual shuffling around of prizes to ensure nobody is able to retire on the sums involved meant that Keith won Low Putts. Peter Bush took 1st Birdy (on the 1st) and Stuart Walker the 1st Sandy on the 17th.

Michael Seabrook’s 13 improvement on the back 9 was quite unchallenged while Reka’s par at the 8th hole put her in the money. Again 🙂

PC - ShirtsA healthy 6 skirts “awarded” on the day, 33% of the qualifying field so well done to them all.

PC - Monster Putter

Given the choice of monkey masks, the winner this week demanded the one that provides full anonymity – so well done Teddy (Ragg).

The distinction of Most Strokes was shared by Mike Sperry and Peter Bush with Peter’s impressive score being largely the results of some very wild slashes putting his ball out bounds on at least 2 occasions – and there may even have been a water ball in that lot, your scribe’s eyes were watering over by that stage.

More detailed player by player results here while all the prize winners and more can be seen on our photo gallery.

Next up

A very special early in the year treat for you next Sunday with our first ever visit to the legendary Cengkareng Golf Club out on the airport jalan tol. A breeze to get to from South Jakarta on a Sunday morning these days with the Tee Setter’s best friend, the JORR, in operation.

Green fees of a very attractive 750,000 for this walking only course and with a start from at least 2 tees – though we hope for more. Whatever the arrangements we will tee off starting at 12 noon.

Getting there in plenty of time is highly recommended so that we can get a big field of 16 flights put together – and you can benefit from what is alleged to be the best golf course kitchen in the whole of Indonesia -and maybe even an early heart starter with the club’s signature drink being the frozen Margarita 🙂

Signing up early is also highly recommended as we are restricted to those 16 flights we mentioned. No tears.

See ya at Cengkareng! …. Tee Set

Next up: Pondok Cabe, Sunday 3rd January 2016

Pondok CabeIf you haven’t already done so then sign up now for what has to be a great afternoon at the Tee Set friendly Pondok Cabe on Sunday and the first round of 2016.

A perfect way to spend your last hours of freedom before putting your nose back to the grindstone on Monday 😦

As we mentioned the other day, the main drag out to the course, the Cirendeu road, is something of a mess with some minor widening and the installation of a solid concrete base to the whole length of the thing. Take the colourful route on this map past Fatmawati Hospital – and not the grey one which will only lead to unhappiness.Route

Alternatively, if you are coming from the Pondok Indah side of things then you can take the Old Bogor Road and hang a left at Jl. Cabe Raya (at the McDonalds). Last time we looked the turn to Pondok Cabe was well sign-posted.

OFT

And finally some statistics to close out the Old Year before we start the new.

Stats

Nothing of earth shattering significance except that skirts are on the up, while birdies and eagles are dropping out of the sky.

More encouraging is that the number of player rounds actually crept up year on year to within loose change of 2,000, and this in a most difficult period for the Indonesian economy generally, and its oil and gas, and mining sectors in particular.

So, on that cheery note, see ya at Pondok Cabe for an 11:30 start!! … Tee Set

PS Happy New Year 🙂

2015 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for the Tee Set website.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 38,000 times in 2015. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 14 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Monthly Medal, Imperial, 27th Deceember 201

IGK Hi-lites

The Day

A very respectable 29 Tee Setters showed for the last Monthly Medal of 2016 twixt Christmas and New Year, and were rewarded with a course in tip-top condition and some rather unseasonably hot and sunny weather – and not a drop of rain.

Most were on parade and enjoying breakfast in good time and, with a near empty course beckoning, the first flights got away a full 40 minutes early.

Confusion on the course where some very old and battered wooden Nearest to the Pin and Longest Drive “thingies” appeared and were duly ignored by most as not being the ones with the tasteful and distinctive Tee Set motif emblazoned on them. It later transpired that they had in fact been ordered by us – but the results themselves were never to appear so, if you actually had anything recorded then jolly bad luck.

joeMC-ing and scoring after play for the first time in a long time was the former Committee Member with Special Responsibilities for Web Stuff – ably assisted in the scoring by his wife Mrs Pie; many thanks to them both, especially the latter for sorting out Joe Alci who has never really got the hang of the scoring sheet 🙂

Santi also handed over to Brenda a Xmas card signed by us all, and a Pondok Indah Mall gift voucher as a small mark of our appreciation for her fine work over the past year.

The Play

IGK Summary

tettyRunaway Medal winner was Jaco Zaayman with a near unbelievable net 57 from an 83 off the stick combined with a 26 Handicap – with the former also good enough for Low Gross. The attention of the Handicap Committee cannot be far behind 🙂

Grade Prizes to Fernando, Wina and Tetty for A, B and C respectively, so a very good showing from the ladies on a day when there were just four of them.

Amongst the minor prizes were 1st Birdie to both Keith Miller and Simon Reynolds – and on the very first hole at that – while Low Putts of 26 was enough to secure the prize, almost inevitably these days by that well-known fringe dweller, Mark Johnson.

skirtsA somewhat disappointing 4 skirts only, this on a course that generally offers up a rather better skirt ratio – and a Monster Putter of a miserable non-fine bearing 39 – though some small consolation for the absent treasurer in Most Strokes on a hole being shared at 11 by both James Ross and Craig Edwards. Thanks guys.

Fuller, player by player results here – and more photos of the day on the Tee Set Gallery.

2016 Programme

1st draft is now sorted by Wina and is hopefully to be fine-tuned by your indefatigable committee on licensed premises in the near future.

With the end of our existing contract at Imperial coming up with the February Medal, the immediate Past Vice-President of web-affairs, in the absence of all the grown-ups sunning themselves in far-away places, sought the views of members on what might be done from March onwards.

The options appear to be to stay at Imperial or take on Riverside or Cengkareng, which both appear amenable to our regular presence. The view was a definite “no” for Riverside, some support for Cengkareng and a majority in favour of staying right where we are.

To get the views of those who were not fortunate to play Imperial and indeed formalise and quantify views a little we will have one of our rare polls on the issue after our very first ever round at Cengkareng a week on Sunday.

Next Up

Some time since we have darkened Pondok Cabe’s doorstep, so a welcome return to the Tee Set friendly fairways and attractively priced refreshments of this rather under-rated course Sunday next.

There are currently issues with the main drag out to the course however and we will offer some advice on an alternative route in our post on Friday.

Green fees of 410,000 walking or 520,000 sharing a buggy. Register here to join in the fun.

See yah at Pondok Cabe …. Tee Set

PS Don’t panic, strictly for ornament, Xmas water ……..

Don't panic

Next up: Imperial, Sunday 27th December

ImperialMonthly Medal time of course and if you haven’t yet got your name on the trophy then this is as good a time to try as any as there are generally plenty of Tee Setters missing at this time of the year.

Eclectic after 3 roundsSunday also sees the last round of our 2nd Eclectic and a chance to get your name on the Singing President’s gargantuan trophy currently in the hands of Jan Jelinek. winner of the 1st Eclectic.

As you can see the Eclectic trophy can double as a coffin at a push but don’t worry, Tee Set pays for any trucking costs to or from your home.

coffin

Above are also the leading contenders from which the winner will surely emerge, with Pascal’s 33 handicap proving a fearsome weapon in his personal mission impossible in search of glory.

Plenty of others close behind, all it requires is one excellent round!!

The following graphic shows the hole-hole best score for everyone participating – and therefore an idea of where you have the best chance of improving your eclectic.

Eclectic after 3 rounds

The usual tee time on Sunday of around 12 noon, though the time of year may very will give us the chance to get away a little early. Green fees a bargain 750,000 roops as ever but perhaps not for long; shared buggy included. Join us here.

See ya at Imperial!!

Pangkalan Jati 20th December 2015

HILITES

Group

And it’s a Happy Xmas from them ………

The day

There were to be no disaster stories reported from the Fatmawati Market area, so a very healthy turnout for the pre-Xmas round of 32 Tee Setters got off to an early start at PJ helped by the starter using his nous. The course would have been pretty empty without us – and a brisk round of not a lot more than 4 hours for all was the result.

Santa Reynolds was  the tardiest and with unfortunate effect, as he was the nominated deliverer of the seasonal hats. 2 stroke penalty.

Motsamai Makhetla

Motsamai

Dominic May

Dominic

Two Newcomers to report in Motsamai Makhetla a new arrival from South Africa and Dominic May, here from Aussie for a month – and looking for as many games as he can pack in between now and the 16th January. Let Dominic know (0812 8980 4705) if you want a round or have something already organised that he could join in over Xmas/New Year. Appreciate your help.

The Play

Summary

MillersSplendid day for the Millers as they took out Low Net for both A and B Grade while Reka Romango ran away with C Grade with a net 65. We are going to put a marker in the Millers’  cart next time 🙂

Perennial winner off the stick was of course Simon Reynolds, minus a Santa hat, with an impressive 76.

In the minor skill prizes there was the usual shuffling around to make sure nobody gets more than one prize though Mark Johnson’s usual advanced fringe chipping skills was to see him take Low Putts with 27 while Joe Alci was out on his own with a Most Improved score of 12 – well done, Joe!

skirtsA fine crop of 7 skirts will please the absent Treasurer, though he will be less pleased to see that, with Monster Putter at only 39, there will be nothing coming his way from that direction.

More detailed player by player results can be found here – and lots of photos of a fine day on our photo gallery.

Next up

Last Sunday of the month, so it is back to Imperial and the Monthly Medal – and the last in the current 4-event Eclectic Series. A certain small but perfectly formed Ricard drinker in the lead at the moment but others in contention We will update the detailed situation in the next post.

Tee off at 12 noon – and green fees of 750,000 including shared buggy – sign up here.

2016 Schedule

Cengkareng-GolfWhile the full 2016 schedule can best still be described as a “work-in-progress” we do have some very exciting news for you on that front – on 10th January we will be playing Cengkareng GC out by the airport; just a brisk trot around the JORR on a Sunday morning these days.

At the very least Cengkareng is amongst the top 3 courses in Jakarta, blessed with absolutely top-class facilities and, to add to our joy, green fees for this walking-only course will be a relatively wallet-lite 750,000.

Participation will be limited to 50 players and we expect demand to be huge for this one – so sign up as soon as the opportunity is made available early in the New Year.

See ya at Imperial!! ………. Tee Set

Next Up: Pangkalan Jati, 20th December 2015

Tee Setter views on Pangkalan Jati are very nearly as polarised as those of our American brethren on their own President, either the best thing since sliced bread or the very spawn of the Devil – and just about nothing in-between 😦

Less contentious is that PJ, home of the Tee Set for so many years, is a challenging course with more variety than the great majority of the courses in the Jakarta area, and without doubt the one that requires you to use more of the clubs in your bag than any other.

Add in a great price, especially if you are walking, and beer prices vaguely reminiscent of a local 7/11 rather than the liquid gold for which we pay through the nose at so many courses these days, and you can understand why it is popular with many. Just to prove it 30 Tee Setters have already signed up for Sunday – and you can join them by filling in the rather less than demanding form here.

11:30 off 1 & 10 so don’t be late, they do a good breakfast too.

See ya at PJ …….. Tee Set

PS rumour has it that, so long as a reasonable recovery has been made from the previous day’s Xmas Bash in the Dungeon, the Immediate Past Vice President of Hardly Anything will be making a little food and a lot of beer available on his new roof terrace in the sky after the game in nearby Lebak Bulus. Significant prize for anyone diving into the pool apparently.

D.O.G.S. v Tee Set 4 HOGS

Trophy.PNG

26 Tee Setters and 24 DOGS arrived at a pristine Padang Golf Modern for the long awaited showdown between Jakarta’s two leading golf societies, somewhat strangely for the very first ever such meeting. As stated on the handsome new trophy created for the event, it is played for the glory, the bragging rights – and most importantly,  to help poor and unfortunate Indonesian children.

It is a fact of course that many Tee Setters play DOGS and vice versa – and the team line ups were to reflect the rather ephemeral concept of being either a DOG or a Tee Setter!

No matter as the bunch playing under the DOGS banner against those with a Tee Set logo proudly emblazoned on their chest were to punch each other out to an honourable draw, with each winning 5 matches and with 2 being drawn. Headline

After more than 5 years being one of those Tee Set/DOGS “society-swappers” we mentioned above, today was Geary Bowles last game with us. While playing for DOGS, he was sensible enough to make sure he and his partner played to a draw. Farewell Geary, it has been great having you with us – and we know you will be a regular return visitor to “the city that really never sleeps”!!

Lots more photos of a great day here.

NL 5.PNG

It’s mind, no it’s not it’s mine, OK, we’ll share it !!!

The benefactor of today’s play, to the tune of close to 10 million roops between registration fees and generous donations, was of course the Yayasan HOG. Many thanks to all – and you might take a few minutes to check out on this YouTube video to see just where your money goes to when you support the HOGS, a charity without peer here in Jakarta and totally focussed on helping poor and terribly disadvantaged Indonesian kids – often enough transforming their lives.

If the video doesn’t bring a tear to your eye then you are a harder man than the cynical old bastard writing this post.

Please think about them if you or your organisation is ever in a position to provide good cause funds  – we can assure you that there is no better home for your generosity than the HOGS.

Next up

The former President of Nearly Everything, in the unfortunate absence of the Singing President due to a life threatening condition (and a Doctor’s note as is required by the constitution), confirmed today that next week will see us at our former and long time home of Pangkalan Jati.

Our last game before Xmas of course so daft hats and strange behaviours are actually encouraged for once. Tee off at 11:30 and green fees that are really cheap – and even cheaper if you take Shank’s Pony on what is an eminently walkable course. Sign up here as ever for some Xmas fun in the sun and maybe even a little rain.

See ya at PJ !! … Tee Set

PS Having carted 6 bottles of the wine all over Jakarta intending to award them to the 3 best winning flights, the above mentioned former President of Nearly Everything managed to forget to actually give them out and will be shortly be the recipient of a friendly but firm warning from the committee as to his future behaviour 🙂

Numbers may be limited by the course so first in first served!

Gading Raya, 6th December, 2015

The Day

A big thumbs up from Mick for Gading Raya and the best after match Margaritas we’ve had, especially when laced with a little extra Grand Marnier…thanks Bags!

At 750,000 Rp including carts, Gading Raya represented real value and produced some excellent rounds.  While flat and reasonably forgiving of wayward drives, the rough around the greens can have players either flying chips through the green or chunking them a foot in front.

After a slow start to registrations we ended up with a healthy (well…) turnout of 36 Tee Setters.  This tested the starters who were working on an earlier booking of only 5 flights, but they managed to squeeze us in and we all finished well before the dark and the rain. Welcome for the first time to Lars and welcome back after a few years to Peter (182 weeks) and Chris (158 weeks).

The Play

Gading Raya

A very healthy harvest of 8 skirts boosted the coffers early, Mike choosing both skirt and wig, joined by a few familiar faces…although Malty uncharacteristically is out of shot at the back. In his first week on official duties, Mel became the Vice President of Most Photos, featured here and below….

23304421740_13cce34a70_z

23232218019_3d0710cbe5_zYep, Mel also picked up First Par for Over 30 handicap and won Low Net C Grade with one of his best Tee Set rounds of 63…although on review a handicap of 43 may have helped…back to Committee to check the maximum handicap rules. Neil had back to back Low Net A grade wins with 67 and Mark again put on a fine display of golf to win Low Gross with 78, which could have been much lower after a 35 on the front nine.  The round of the day though was from Glenn with a blistering 60…great effort!

22971938684_8e1b438908_z

Former President and Bandung Bash El Supremo Geoff won Low Putts with 25, helped no doubt by his choice of caddy…excellent green reader.  Bill fought off the front nine demons….and topped up his blood stream…for a most improved back nine. Chris Till and Chris Burley won their money back with first birdie and sandy par.

23232217829_6ff8765075_z

Mick pictured above had 10 strokes to take the honesty award for Most Strokes and Chris Till was Monster Putter with 41, but we stuffed up and made Stuart and Bill keep him company…well we had 3 monkey masks so why not for the photo….refunds due next time we see you Stuart and Bill!

Next Up – Dogs versus Tee Set –  Charity Team Event for HOGS, Modern Golf Club, 11.30am

DOGS vs TEE SET TrophyJust in case you haven’t had enough fun for the year, we decided to get together with our friends at DOGS  on Sunday to play the inaugural DOGS versus Tee Set Charity Team Event for HOGS.

It will be a Ryder Cup style event – four ball match play.  2 Tee Setters versus 2 DOGS (or HOGS to make up numbers) in each match. Opposing captains will nominate teams in a Ryder Cup style draw ceremony before the start of play.

Four ball is NOT alternate shot – that is Foursomes.

In a four ball match, handicaps are adjusted to 3/4 of the difference between your normal handicap and that of the lowest handicap player in the four ball.  The lowest handicap player gets no strokes and everyone else gets strokes on the hardest holes up to their adjusted four ball handicap.

For example, the four ball has John (8), Barbora (9), Mark (13) and Craig (18)….the adjusted handicaps will have John getting no strokes, Barbora (1), Mark (4) and Craig (8)…noting that handicaps are rounded up or down to the nearest whole number and up to the higher number if 0.5 (in the example above Craig has 3/4 of the difference of 10 strokes from John, so 10 x 3/4 = 7.5 which is rounded up to 8).

On each hole, a pair counts the best net score of the two players.  The pair with the lowest net score wins the hole. The pair which wins the most holes wins the match.  If pairs are “all square” then that is how the result will be recorded – there is no need for a putt off. At the end of the day, we will count up the matches and the group with the most matches will be awarded the perpetual trophy.

At the same time as playing match play, each pair will record on their score card their best ball (net score) on each hole based on their normal handicap.  At the end of the day, pairs will submit their score card with their total best ball score for 18 holes. Prizes will be awarded to the three pairs who have the Lowest Net Best Ball scores.

So if we don’t have even numbers with DOGS, then remaining pairs will play against each other for bragging rights and will still be eligible for prizes.

We know it’s a recipe for mass confusion…but team events are always great fun…and there should be enough golfers out there among you who can work it out!

Register here as usual and if you would like to nominate a playing partner for your pair, please indicate that in the comments field.  Ideally pairs should be within 8 strokes handicap of each other.
