Next up: Monthly Medal etc, Imperial GK, Sunday 28th February 2016

imperialphotoImperial Golf Klub with a K is going to be a hive of activity tomorrow with the last Sunday of the month seeing the February Monthly Medal, the 3rd (?) round of the Eclectic and the last opportunity for playing the first round of the 2016 Tee Set Matchplay.

With green fees of 770,000 roops, an 11:48 tee off from 1 & 10 and 46 Tee Setters already signed up, we still have a little space for the tardy if you sign up here.

To add to the excitement we will once again have a sponsor for the Monthly Medal – Reka Romango’s “Our Place”, which will be providing some interesting liquid refreshment of which more anon (ie we haven’t a clue right now but are working on it).

Finally, here is a little statistic from the web guy, a statistic revealing the average off-the-stick score of every course over the past five years – and therefore a pretty fair gauge of relative course difficulty.

Course difficulty

See ya at Imperial …. cheers, Tee Set

Pangkalan Jati, 21st February 2016

The Day

PJ2102161

Perhaps the highlight of the day came on the first tee.  As playing partners watched on, John made what ended up looking like a good swing at the finish…..unfortunately the ball stayed there….twice!!!  ‘Twas not to be the last of the drama in this flight as Axel nailed his caddy with a wayward chip….poor bugger fell like the proverbial and was rushed off by motorbike for treatment…we heard later he was OK, perhaps minus a tooth.

25159203766_61b90b5dea_zBig welcome to newcomer ladies Carmel (Carm) and Yunita (Tata) who were both playing their first ever full round of golf and welcome back to Tony “Tank” Gleeson (pictured)  who joined the Singing President and the newcomer ladies in the last flight.

The Play

PJ2102162

In terms of actual skill, clearly the highlight was Tom and Mark’s matchplay which Tom won 2 and 1 after outshooting Mark’s fine round of 69 net (79 gross) with a better 64 net (88 gross).  This made them clear winners in the A and B Grade net categories.  In fact Mark topped the table in 4 categories but under our rules could only win one.  This left the Singing President sheepishly to accept Low Gross on default with 89 and Paisan to win Low C Grade.

24558700063_ea288f1225_z

In other prizes, John recovered from his first tee wobbles to lead Most Improved but was awarded the more prestigious Low Putts and James moved in to take the Most Improved.  Santi was OB so she could rush back to the Web Guy who was home with a bug so missed her first sandy prize. There was no first birdie or first par over 30 awarded because winners had already won – makes a happy Treasurer.

Not surprisingly our first gamers featured in the booby prizes sharing Monster Putter with 41 strokes, joined by Reni.

25185546825_44a79197d2_z

Bas couldn’t keep out of the presentation with a hefty 15 strokes to win Most Strokes and there was the usual healthy (not sure if that fits this bunch) harvest of skirts…with John having 2 before he hit a ball.

24889906680_e58bd61b59_z

Chris was clearly a bit nervous and, not surprisingly quickly sought refuge in the arms of Umaya, pictured here earlier in the day waiting on the first tee – Tee Set’s equivalent of Fashions on the Field.25185534375_f92fef6b16_m

Interleague

As we sat to enjoy after match camaraderie and PJ’s cheap beer, we were advised of the Tee Set Interleague team result from Captain Ric, who selected the team on form, leaving himself on the sideline.  A great 8-2 victory for the defending champs.

Opposition team Jakarta Loose Impediments also fielded 6 Tee Setters, including Tony Blackburn who kindly filled in at the last minute. Leading off with A graders Rasmus and Stuart (first gamer) in singles, then Tee Set legends Geoff and Murcho,  current monthly medalist Andrew (first game) and stalwart Chris Lever,  and good mates Anlo  and Joseph in the doubles, Tee Set were all square in two matches and won the other 3 games.  Stuart had a stunning debut with a 7 and 6 win. Joining Ric at Jags to cheer on the team were Mel , Mick and Connor Dodsworth out at Jags  although there were a few lost balls by the end of the day and a skirt apiece to Mel and Connor.

Next Up

There’s lots of golf on offer over the next month or so.  As a result numbers were so low that Bash Supremo Geoff and the Tee Set Committee agreed that the Bandung Bash would be postponed until we could work out a better time.

There is a gents event sponsored by Albens Cider for cider fans at Cengkareng on Tuesday 8 March, there is the Legends event at Jags on Friday 11th March which Ric recommends as a great day – see here and Murphy’s has a St. Patrick’s Day event at Cengkareng on Wednesday 16th March which may be full now.

But most importantly it is Monthly Medal time again at Imperial Golf Klub and the second round of the third cycle of the Eclectic championship – current standings online soon – so register here as usual.

Pangkalan Jati/Jags Interleague, 21st February 2016

PJ2Two choices this week.

The regular Tee set round will be at Pangkalan Jati, known for many years as Tee Set’s home course.  It is a classic “Padang” course blending into the local landscape and continues to deny those who think they will shoot a low score after showing promise on some of the flashier courses elsewhere.  This week a number of new Tee Setters will be playing their first rounds and PJ’s is a great place to be introduced to golf.

By now Captain Ric has contacted his team for Interleague to play the first round at Jagorawi and they will be off there.  Other Tee Setters are welcome to register to follow them.  Our brothers in Tee Set who make up the Jakarta Loose Impediments are desperate for players.

If you haven’t registered for one or the other course, do so here.

Tee Set bag tags

In a rare moment of unclarity, the Web Guy has fessed up to whatever a wayward SQL statement is, waywardness that led to the number of rounds played on the bag tag page being understated for some and he has now corrected them there.

The effect is that some people who ordered the 50 rounds played actually qualify for, and will receive, the 100 rounds played version – and some who ordered the “plain” version will instead receive the 50 rounds played.

This is your last chance to order these handsome Tee Set bag tags, so don’t hang around, put in your order now if you haven’t already. We will order on order on Monday and then the opportunity will be gone forever.

Golf tales

It’s been a while since we got a joke worthy of adding to golf tales but here is one that tickled us from Laurie O’Connor. It’s about golfer gullibility, pro shop smarts or government inefficency, your choice.

See you somewhere on Sunday!! … Tee Set

Gading Raya, Sunday 14th February 2016

GR Hi-lites

The Day

25040503505_dbea19acb5_z

Yes, love was in the air as Tee Setters came out for Valentines.  To celebrate the day, the ladies headed out in the first flight, perhaps for the first time, and set a fine example in speedy play coming in to the clubhouse in good time, despite the horrible conditions.  Everyone was drenched from the constant rain on the second nine, which led to lots of slipping clubs, a few giving up and no doubt a few bouts of flu this week.

Weather aside it was one the best days of the season, with Gading Raya putting on pre-game music.  Vice President Mel demonstrated Tee Set’s succession planning as he first showed his singing talents and then danced while serenaded by the Singing President.

Dede supplied all with her delicious home made Valentine’s Day chocolates, King celebrated his birthday with lots of love and couples enjoyed their special day out.

A number of newcomers and welcome backs headed by Ghavi after 143 weeks.  Father and son Mick and Connor joined forces, Roger was joined by mates David and Matthew, and Ali, Kokom and Livia had their intro to Tee Set.

The Play

GR - Summary

The play was tough, especially the second nine.  Stuart’s round of 67 net (79 gross) was exceptional in the conditions as was Pieter’s 69, continuing his fine form.  Michael “Vasco da Gama” Seabrook narrowly pipped Pastis Pascal on a countback to take Low Net C Grade.

25038686595_5b53f91be4_z

The highlight in the skills prizes was Wina’s 26 putts, no need to hide Wina.  Rasmus wasted no time birdie-ing they first two holes, Geoff took first sandy on the second but scuttled off before prizes and birthday boy King had the first par over 30 handicap.  Well done Mike – on such a difficulty day – he managed to improve 9 strokes on the back nine to win Most Improved and recoup some of his previous contributions.

A special Combined Low Net prize was offered this week due to us doubling up at Gading Raya.  After rain and a few beers we weren’t fit to calculate it and award it on Sunday, but we can now announce that Wina with 140 net narrowly pipped Pascal (always a bridesmaid) with 141….stick at it mate, you are sure to win soon!!!!  Your prize awaits Wina!

And now for the booby prizes, and what may be a Tee Set record…no not the skirts, a surprisingly low skirt count…although the usual suspects were there again, with Mel literally wearing the skirt.  The highlight was Dede’s 61 putts to win Monster Putter…her playing partners must have been super tough….no gimmies ladies!  Don’t worry last week’s monster putter Chris shot out of the gates this week with 5 one putts, so your luck will change Dede!

See Player by Player Results for Gading Raya here while more photos of the day are on our photo gallery.

Tee Set Matchplay

Five matches played with four decided on the last holes (careful how you say that).  In the battle of the Past Presidents, Ric approached the last to gimmie range for par while Geoff got lost in the sand, leaving Ric with a 2 Up result and some good form moving into the first round of interleague.

James also had sand problems on the last to go down to Laurie 1 Up again on the last after finding the sand, moving some loose impediments by mistake and ending up in the water.

Pascal outlasted Cucu in a torrid affair, which saw some friendly fire exchanged between the carts, Tom ducking for cover after being caught here fraternising the enemy, but finding a happy ending despite Pascal’s 1 Up win.

Despite an excellent first nine playing under his handicap, Bill found Pieter in even hotter form on his way to his net 69 and a 5 and 4 victory.

Please don’t forget to email results of your games to Matchplay El Supremo James – they are not recorded until he receives the email.  Follow results here.

Tee Set bag tags

Bag tagOrders for the excellent cast bronze Tee Set bag tags we are having made close this week so, if you are not one of the many who have ordered already, please go here, fill in the exceptionally simple form and let us know your needs!

Next up

A choice of two courses as we have 2 registered Tee Set events this Sunday.

Next Up: CHANGE OF VENUE!! Gading Raya, 14th February 2016,12.28pm.

Valentine's Day

A sudden change of venue is required due to Kedaton calling in to say that their course is in no fit state for Tee Set after the recent rains.

Gading Raya has welcomed us back for the second successive week.  If you missed out last week, here’s your chance.  If you played last week, you qualify for a special prize of Best Combined Net.

Vday2Remember before you leave home that it is Valentine’s Day. Ric and Liz and the other Tee Set couples will no doubt be celebrating on the course together.

Another special prize for the best Valentine’s Day themed golf attire.

Green fees are 750,000Rp including cart.  No need to re-register, but if you have not done so, then register here.

We are also keen to announce that personalised bronze Tee Set bag tags are now available for order here.  Good for bragging rights and to find your bag after those frozen margaritas on the 19th hole (or if you take advantage of the delivery service offered on some courses the  1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, 15th, ouch).

Gading Raya, Sunday 7th February 2016

The Day

Summary

High numbers again this week when Tee Set showed again it could survive notable absences. Thanks to Vice Presidents Mel and Ric, ably supported by Beby, taking charge and doing a great job.  Big thanks too to Pascal for starting off the registrations until the cavalry arrived and for taking some great photos of the day, see more here.

Welcome back after long absences to Tony, Tim, Jeff, Marcus and Jason. Welcome also to Axel’s brothers visiting Jakarta; they clearly enjoyed their Sunday with Tee Set.

24863062356_400f243a09_z

The Play

Scores

Firstly congratulations to Joseph for shooting par off the stick and winning Low Gross.  Par rounds are very rare in Tee Set and to have 6 in the field shooting 80 or less on a championship course is fine golf.  Among them, Neil Mullins is continuing his fine form shooting a 67 net to win Low Net A Grade and claim victory in his match against Stuart.  Craig Edwards was again in the money winning Low Net B with 70, and the round of the day of a net 66 enabled King “Luar Biasa” Tirto to win Net C Grade and claim a strong 6 and 5 victory against current Monthly Medal champ Andrew in the first round of the matchplay.

Among other prizes were regulars Bas (Jaturoporn) with first Birdie, showing he can move between prize categories, Jonathan with Most Improved (he must have been OB, so claimed here by Ric), Ricardo with first sandy (as Joseph had won Low Gross), Rasmus for Lowest Putts with an excellent 26 (good chipping?) and it looks like King again for 1st Par over 30, although on our one prize policy it perhaps should have been Malty, so he is honoured here instead.

A modest harvest of 7 skirts this week, with some well known faces among the cross dressers.  Chris doubled up to also wear the Monster Putter mask, 7 putts ahead of the competition with 47 putts….it just wouldn’t go in?

Matchplay

The first matches were scheduled this week. Follow the competition here.

King beat Andrew 6 and 5 – King played his best game in many years, wasted no time and was already 3 up after the first 6 holes but Andrew managed to find the fairways for a few holes and hold him steady until King won the first 4 holes of the back nine, establishing an insurmountable lead of 6 up with 5 holes to go. Andrew suffering medallist hangover was left counting lost balls, wondering where King found his inspiration, and steeling himself for a comeback in the next round.

Other matches did not offer match reports (these are welcome!!).  Neil beat Stuart 5 and 3; in a battle of the gentlemen Jiro beat Mike 2 and 1, and Roger outlasted Chris with another 2 and 1 result, no doubt hearing some fine cursing along the way.

Next Up

We are heading west again with a visit to Kedaton.  Register here as usual. Price will be 650,000Rp walking plus shared cart at 260,000Rp per cart. Tee off 11.30am.

If you are playing matchplay, please ask to be paired with your opponent in the Comments field.

Next Up: Gading Raya,7th February 2016, 11am, 750,000Rp (including cart)

Yes, it seems like only yesterday that Bags was spiking those margaritas with Grand Marnier, and Glen and Mel were carving up the Gading Raya course with rounds of the year, and we are back again at one of our favourite courses.  gading raya

An 11am start at 750,000Rp including cart is outstanding value, so register here if you haven’t already.  Make sure you list any pairing preferences in the comments field, as we will probably have to organise flights in advance again given the numbers.

For those entered in the matchplay, the first rounds will be played on Sunday.  There is still be a chance to register if you haven’t already.  For all the rules and information on Tee Set matchplay, check out here.

And preparations for the traditional Easter Bandung Bash are well underway, with Tournament Director and Former President Geoff, leading the way as usual.  The Bash is a Tee Set event this year  – keep an eye on the website as we will have a special Bandung Bash page with all details and registration in the next few days.

Imperial Golf Klub, Tee Set Monthly Medal, 31st January 2016

IM - HLThe Day

imperialphoto

Tee Set numbers continue to grow, with 61 (9 ladies) enjoying a great day at Imperial, the home of the Monthly Medal.  We were blessed with fine weather until the heavens opened on the last two flights.

Welcome to David for his first round and welcome back to Aditya after 65 weeks, Erik after 35 weeks, Ed after 26 and Marco after 26 weeks.

The Play

IM - Summary

There were plenty of reasons to play well at Imperial – the monthly medal, the first round of the third eclectic cycle, two free tickets to UB40 (which I forgot to award – speak to you later Andrew!) – and there was plenty of fine golf mixed in with some shockers of course!

24701554976_3497508ae6_z

This month was a landmark in that the previous Monthly Medal Shield covering three year’s of winners was full and Geoff and Kojo were kind enough to sponsor a new one.  Take away medals were also made and awarded for the first time.  The winner this month was Andrew Waite with 42 points.

Andrew, a promising junior golfing in his childhood and blessed with a full Monty-esque swing and a very handy short game, recently returned to golf to fill his time in Jakarta and has been steadily improving.

Daniel continued his fine form, coming directly from soccer to golf, and topped the tables in a number of categories (Low Gross, First Birdie, Low Putts), but was awarded the prestigious Low Net A Grade with a net 66 (80 gross).  Simon therefore won the Low Gross with 81.

With Andrew taking the medal, Craig was rewarded for his solid round to win Low Net B Grade and Bas was again in the prizes with Low Net C Grade.

Mark Johnson and Mike Sperry joined Daniel as having Lowest Putts and made a fine pair in this photo, while a mixed bag of renogades shared the other skill prizes – Pascal for first par over 30 handicap, Neil with first birdie (and celebrating his 100th tee set round since record keeping commenced in 2012), Aditya for first sandy and Malty and Stuart sharing Most Improved after sluggish starts and blistering finishes. Ricardo left early so missed out on recouping his fine money, but is featured gloriously below.

Others who have passed 100 rounds since 2012 are Ric (138), Geoff (124), Graham “Grumpy” (120), Wina (119) and Mel Meeds (112)…with others close to the milestone. Special bag medallions will be issued to 100 round veterans over the next few weeks.

And now for the fun stuff….. plenty of skirts, 9 in all, with Ricardo doing the honourable thing and getting his photo taken before heading off early.

IM - Boobies

Mike was the best sport of the day, sharing Most Strokes with James and reuniting with his little buddy to take Monster Putter with 47 strokes….it gets better Mike!

More detailed player by player results here and more photos of another great day on the Tee Set gallery here.

2016 Tee Set Matchplay Championship

A fairly chaotic but ultimately effective draw took place and the following first round matches were scheduled as the initial non-elimination round.  Matchplay El Supremo James will be in touch and will stay in touch via the Matchplay page on the website

Tee Set Eclectic – Winner of Second Cycle

24360242189_35fa8434d6_z

The trophy for the Tee Set eclectic has been nicknamed “the coffin” and Vice President of Almost Everything again went above and beyond the call of duty in transporting it to Imperial.

It had been given pride of place by first winner Jan since the Championships and will be updated with successive winners during the year, who will be awarded prizes at the Championships in November.

For now, it had to be at least symbolically awarded to the Second Cycle Winner, El Guapo Fernando Gaggino, who won narrowly from Pastis Pascal and Pieter (Dont call me Pete) Nielen-Groen.  Pascal was still not quite ready to accept the result.

24701553756_2ded6f933c_z

The next cycle will be played over the next 5 months.

Gading Raya is one of Tee Set’s favourite courses.  Register here as usual.

Next Up: Imperial Golf Klub, Tee Set Monthly Medal, 31st January 2016, 11.48am

Imperial

In what seems to be a pattern for 2016, our registrations have already hit 51, so if you have not registered already, be quick and register here.  In order that we finish before dark, we will need to limit numbers to 64, and preference will be given to those who registered early.

Lift, clean and place will be in effect from this week until further notice.  Also to save time, we ask that a provisional ball is played where there is a chance of a lost ball, and that only the player and his or her caddy look for a lost ball (maximum of 2 minutes). We also ask players to limit the time in pre-shot routines, especially on the tee box, and to generally speed up the pace of play.  The aim of each flight is to be immediately following the flight in front.
