Stop the Press: Monthly Medal Shield Found

sherlockFor some months now the Committee has been baffled by the mysterious disappearance of the Monthly Medal Shield after the Tee Set Club Championships in November.

We certainly had our suspicions.  Perhaps it disappeared with the missing whiskey – but we discovered that went down somebody’s throat, so it wasn’t going to be there.

Anyway our appeal to the membership for information leading to its whereabouts has paid off.  The culprit has handed himself in…..and here he is:

23971546573_5b517e5722_m

The secret of good detective work is to follow the trail of evidence.  We should have known in Tee Set that all trails lead to the Vice President of Almost Everything.  Somewhere between those left over goodie bags, unsold shirts, leftover Tee Set booze stocks, ageing Nearest to the Pin and Long Drive Banners, skirts and Monster Putter monkey masks and endless other paraphernalia, our revered Shield was hiding.

So that mystery is solved! Next one, where is Sam?

In the heart of Jakarta, Senayan is a short drive for many and offers a great course, limited to par 69 by its geography, but full of challenging holes and tricky greens.  It is target golf so rewards those in good form and punishes mercilessly those off their game.  Great facilities and a day free from rain interruption, despite some threatening clouds.

Fairly boggy fairways means that we will introduce the rainy season local rule of lift, clean and place from now on.  It was not in place on Sunday but people used their common sense and took relief if plugged or in casual water.

Welcome to Jim for the first time and great to see Manoj and Pekka back after extended absences.  Again we had an impressive turnout of ladies with Puteri coming back to Tee Set after 8 weeks away.

23971174233_d3336f67b3_zThe scoring department was working overtime and had to call in seasoned adjudicator Ric to separate ties in a number of categories.  Where there is a tie in the net categories, there is a count back, with the best back nine result being awarded the winner. So Leona and Daniel were unlucky this week being pipped at the post by Mick and Santi in the C Grade Net and A grade Net categories.  I’m sure we will see them back in the prizes very soon.  Daniel is now well established in the A Grade and about to make the transition to white tees!

Joining Santi and Mick, was Pieter winning B Grade Net with the round of the day of 66, including two birdies.  Low Gross was a tie between Santi, Stuart and Rasmus but Stuart had first sandy par on hole 7 (pictured below) so Rasmus was deemed winner only to be declared OB.  So the honours remained shared and the Treasurer keeps the 100,000 Rp.

The Treasurer was less happy with the first birdie awards which, because of Pieter not being eligible for his birdie on hole 1, went to 3 deserving winners: Barbora, Murcho and Simon.

Malty and Bas won for the second week in a row with Low Putts and First Par Over 30 handicap, Bas again starting well.  The Singing President was very happy for the protection of the 100K Rps.  Ivan, rewarded for his comedic contribution last week, took out Most Improved with an 11 shot improvement….what a first nine it was!

And now, for the booby prizes….a large harvest of 12 skirts again returned the smile to the Treasurer.

Jaroslav was next door enjoying some great Japanese food so we had to photo him separately, and son Daniel, who is unlikely to ever qualify for a skirt, had to join in the fun.

Most Strokes was shared between Mel and Pekka and Monster Putter went to Puteri with 46 strokes.

2016 Tee Set Matchplay

30 already signed up for this year’s Matchplay but you still have a week to register if you haven’t done so already before the draw at Imperial next Sunday to decide the first round match-ups, the results of which determine whether you go on to the Gold (winners) or Bronze (Losers) bracket. And don’t worry too much if you lose your first round – plenty of past Tee Set Matchplay Champions have come from there 🙂

You might want to check that you are already registered here:

Monthly Medal Shield

Last seen at the Tee Set Championship, it’s now gone AWOL and there is a small reward for anyone providing information leading to its arrest and subsequent conviction. So if you know anything then please advise Detective Chief Superintendent Ewers, we are getting desperate 😦

Next Up

Monthly Medal at Imperial Golf Klub, 11.48 tee off, prices have not been lifted yet from 750,000 but will go up in March.  Beer prices will also go up but frozen margaritas will come down to match the price of a beer.  Register here.  Remember the UB40 tickets will be awarded to the winner!

The results of the 2nd round of the Tee Set Eclectic will be announced – don’t want to spoil the suspense but just make sure you are there, Pieter, Fernando and Pascal (not in any order).

SenayanAn overdue return to Senayan with a 12:30 start on Sunday – with the planned 48 players in the field we would have a good expectation of getting everyone round the relatively short course before dark despite the lateness of the start.

As we have 44 players registered and with allocated flights and tee times already, there are just 4 guaranteed slots left – anyone registering after 48th plays at their own risk as to whether or not they finish all 18!!

If you want to play and haven’t signed up already, then you can do so here.

Green fees etc of 850,000 roops on a very easy to walk course – 500,000 for a cart for 2 if you prefer to ride. Beers are expensive so you may wish to take the traditional mitigating measures.

Help!!

Sometime between the 2015 Championship and now, the Tee Set Monthly Medal Shield went walkabout and its location remains unknown. Any ideas then PLEASE let us know!!!

2016 Tee Set Matchplay

With the draw at Imperial just a little over a week away then, if you haven’t done so already, register now if you want to join the competition.

Aussie Day

A bit of a last-minute warning but there is a great Australia Day family event at Buperta Park in Cibubur …. see the flyer below.

MN Hilites

The Day

As some wondered what would happen after Thursday’s attacks in Jakarta, Tee Set continued its great tradition of never missing a weekend in over 32 years, with an impressive 48 having a great Sunday outdoors.

Rain

Thanks to Ivan for the highly appropriate cartoon – and the highly inappropriate after match joke, which cannot be shared, but which still has us smiling.  Good luck with the diet mate!

Matoa again produced excellent value at 600k including cart and great facilities.  It started off stinking hot, punishing those of us recovering from too many the night(s) before, but then came the welcome breeze, the rain and just enough lightning to get us all moving a bit faster.  The greens were much slower than last week which tricked a number of us early on and the bunkers were brutal, but overall the course is in excellent condition.  Another good turnout of women with 10, expecting more next week at Senayan!

24153844630_1f72ff6399_z

As usual, a great after match gathering thanks to Matoa’s hospitality, an earlier than normal finish and apparently good coverage for the Tee Set internet generation……sorry guys we don’t post until Monday afternoon….

The Play

MN SummaryMore detailed, player by player results here and more photos of a great day on the Tee set Gallery here.

The blistering form of the championships was not repeated but there were a number of strong sub par rounds carded.  Axel had a fine day out heading the winner tables in four categories, but eligible for one prize only, that being the most prestigious prize of Low Net A Grade with a 70.  Santi maintained her good form winning Low Gross with 85.  Slight glich meant that Barbora’s 86 round and 88s from Daniel and Mark are not in the table above so are acknowledged here instead. Keith also had a great round of 88 to win Low B Grade with a net 69, pictured here with Santi, because his individual shot was, like Keith later in the afternoon, a little blurry.

24081632129_77dce8206e_z24423217106_99d04e1ac5_z 24153823080_b377e5683c_z

Its never a problem getting Malty to participate in ceremonies, but he well and truly earned it this week with an excellent comeback round of 67 net. In the skill prizes, James won low putts (28) no doubt due to the intensive pre-match chipping practice to get ’em close, narrowly edging out Mick.

Not to worry, Mick picked up first birdie and Jaturoporn (Bas for short) took no time in claiming first par over 30 handicap on the first hole.

24153834770_02957ba998_zMost improved was shared between three today and most strokes on a hole (sorry we fine for that) was shared among 6 wayward but honest Tee Setters with 10 strokes (5 pictured here).

24449449985_53a71234bd_z

With sponsorship down this year, the Treasurer is going to be extra tough, but fair, as wife Liz contributed from the household budget to both most strokes and Monster Putter with 40 putts….we may have kept it at one fine…to be nice.

24341163772_646fb13b51_z

And now….in case you thought we forgot….the skirts…a paltry 3 skirts.  Mike swears that his was a “muscular skirt” coined at Senayan a couple of years ago for Sam “where’s Sam?” Westen to justify his first and only skirt after ricocheting off a tree a long way out and coming back to the ladies tee…..Mike with a matching shirt and skirt like that, you don’t need to justify anything 🙂

And what a great combination with Bob coming back after over a year and Andreas making the wig his own….and looking like a rock star in the making!

Matoa course mapAfter a certain amount of fleet-footed reorganisation by Tee Set schedule organiser Wina, we are at Matoa Nasional on Sunday with an 11am kick-off from tee boxes 1 and 10.

Green fees of around 650,000 with shared buggy if memory serves, though they may have increased that for 2016. Sign up here if you haven’t already for a bit of early practice on what will undoubtedly be this year’s Championship course 🙂

Matchplay

golf-cartoon-losingAnd it is that time of year again and the moment to kick off Tee Set’s ever popular Matchplay Championship. After two years of being organised by El Guapo (many thanks, Guap0!), the poisoned chalice has been passed on to James Ross who is looking like being even tougher on enforcement than the previous gun slinger. For those with nothing better to do you will find more info about the event here.

Join in the fun of the format of the game in its purest and most enjoyable form by signing up here – entry fee a measly 100,000, pay Brenda next time you see her.

Thank you for your response. ✨

The draw for the competition will be held at Imperial on 31st January and the first matches will start the following Sunday, 7th February.

Upcoming Highlights

Next week 24th January, our ever hard bargaining schedule organiser Wina has secured us a round at Senayan National at green fees of 850,000Rp and a 12.30 tee time. There will be no problem reaching our 25 minimum numbers, but given the tee time, we will be arranging flights so please register early next week to secure an early flight and avoid a twilight finish.

UB40And the following week, the 31st January, will be the Monthly Medal at Imperial  where the winner will be presented with a pair of free tickets to the UB40 concert at the Istora Senayan on Thursday 1st April – and no, it isn’t an April Fools joke. Many thanks to KK for this thoughtful gesture! For those fans who are not so confident of a medal victory you can book online here.  We will be announcing the 2nd Eclectic Champion and drawing the matchplay so should be a big day!

Finally, our Classifieds section has not seen much activity for a while however today you will find a nice 2014 Mazda for sale from Joe Peries – very negotiable he tells us!

See ya at Matoa! …. Tee Set

Cengkareng, Sunday 10th January 2016

GGK Hilites

The Day

23924155899_876ee43242_zFor the first time in memory of most Tee Setters, except Ric of course, we had the opportunity to play at one of Jakarta’s finest courses, Cengkareng.  Special thanks to Keith and Cengkareng GM Kurt for working through an arrangement that will hopefully have us there 6 times through 2016.

Cengkareng is a walking only course, which attracted and tested the 65 Tee Setters who showed up.  The frozen margaritas served on the course and at the after-match were much needed to quench the thirst, lower the body temperature and replace carbs lost during the rounds – although there were some asking for more tequila!

Lots of newcomers, welcome backs and a record number of 14 women playing – a key objective of the 2016 Committee championed by the incoming Vice President. Unfortunately the VP was travelling so was not able to see his dream materialise, but a quick analysis of previous high attendances by the Web Guy showed a preference for certain good courses.

Ladies

24292053435_b7b8f852c2_mAnother factor is the number of couples who are now joining Tee Set , with many women taking up golf for the first time: Liz Wymer (picture here), Dietha  Reichlmeier  and a range of returning Tee Set regulars such as Lina, Leona, Jana, Barbora, Tetty and Wina.  Get the word out – more women are most welcome!

les girls

Most of ’em

Overall the day was a great success with 30 minute trips to and from the course, great food and friendly staff.  Play was a bit slow, particularly on the first nine making the last flights finish in twilight, so we are working on that with the GM Kurt and hope to correct it for next time.

The Play

Capture

Cengkareng’s wide fairways and escape zones give relief to the wayward but the large, undulating greens test the low handicappers, so it was not surprising that there were many good but few blistering scores carded.  Joseph – pictured (76) and Barbora (79) both returned sub 80 rounds which we like to see for Low Gross contenders, with probably the largest number of rounds in the 80s returned by Tee Set in one round.

24183735282_0f0a5bd766_m24265808236_b3364d4e1f_m

Santi had a great back nine of 38 to take out Low Net A Grade with 71, Low B Grade was shared by 4 on net 67 including father and son, Jaroslav and Daniel, joined by Tom and James. I had promised to photoshop Jaroslav in to the winners photo below as he was missing in shower but my skills have their limits.  Cucu had her best round to win with a 67 net, photographed here in action – with a swing like that there is nor surprise she outdrives many of our guys.

23996352030_de6e470ac5_z 23663781484_aa3dbd18b6_m

Winners of skills prizes were Matt (1st birdy), Jaco (for first sandy – staying in the winners’ circle after his historical handicap revision of 13 strokes for exceptional torunament performance), Pascal for first par over 30 handicap, Dede for Most Improved with a best 49 on the back nine and Mark keeping up his outstanding average with 28 putts.  Photos here.

Of course with our numbers and the large gaps to the ladies tees, we were bound to have a decent harvest of skirts and we did with 11, with the following pictured brave and proud enough to face the photo:

23924120769_3be83b8eab_z

24209606331_27609576e6_mThe Former President of Some Things found himself funding the Most Strokes fine with Dietha temporarily OB – the award was shared with Matt Davis on 12 strokes – but Matt had already contributed with his skirt.  Mike Riley took out the final booby prize for Monster Putter with an impressive 48 strokes…good effort Mike.

And finally, thanks to camera work of Santi and Brenda, some action shots, highlighting the day that was: Mike and Arthur welcoming Nuri and Matt back; Andrew showing off his new Christmas golf gear; Murcho and Joe practising tai chi while Anlo talks handicaps with Jaco; Joseph striding purposefully to his 76, and Keith and Tom showing the different ways of getting the ball in the hole.

A distinct change in course price and quality, Halim 2, is always a lot of fun.  Free lessons from the caddies and lots of bargains at each hole as the free marketeers sell everything from beer to gloves to Oakley shades and Ping drivers. Tee time and prices to be announced through the week but aim for 1130 tee off and we should be right. Register here as usual.

Halim 2 is not available. You will note a change to this in the update above.

BREAKING NEWS

We now have 64 Tee Setters registered for Cengkareng on Sunday – our absolute limit. Registering now means that you will go on the “standby list” – and will keep in touch with you over status – we invariably get a few drop outs so don’t lose all hope!!

ceng58 Tee Setters already signed up for play on Sunday at Cengkareng, the very first time Tee Set have ever played this outstanding course.

In consultation with the course management we have set a maximum of 16 flights, 64 players, for the event. To do otherwise is to make ourselves hostage to fortune, the bad variety.

For a top class walking-only course, great green fees of 750,000 – and first flights teeing off from 1 and 10 at 12 noon and, hopefully, a little earlier.

Just 6 places left right now so sign up here if you haven’t already and, if you think you have already signed up then we suggest you check the list here to make sure your name is on it. The registration process is out of the hands of the reliable Brenda this week and into the hands of, erm, someone less reliable. First-come, first-served and wait-listing after 64 players.

We mentioned the other day that Cengkareng’s signature drink is the frozen Margarita and we are happy to say that, to mark our first round there, the management have agreed to provide Tee Setters with a special 15% discount on them on Sunday, whether by the jug or the glass – and that delivery is available on the course itself throughout play for the truly dedicated 🙂

Cengkareng is simplicity itself to get to, just take the left turn to the Wisma Soewarna Business Park off the airport toll road. If you find yourself in Terminal 1 then you have missed the turn.

See ya Sunday! … Tee Set

Pondok Cabe, Sunday 3rd January 2016

PC HilitesThe Day

The chaos that was the Cirendeu road on Wednesday was transformed by today to no more than a little untidiness with its major diversion removed and no more than a 100 meter section not finished.

Happily all those taking any one of the three routes on offer were to have a smooth journey with only one exception, Billy Lloyd, who was to bitterly complain of a terrible journey. One wag suggested that the most likely cause was in fact his car being unable to cope with the vast quantities of stubbies on board. I guess we will never know the real reason.

Blue skies, a temperature as high as any in 2015, an empty course in tip-top condition and an early start were to be the reward for the 23 Tee Setters who made it to the first round of 2016 – most made it around in less than 4 hours with players able to take a late postprandial beer or two and still leave well before darkness fell. That doesn’t happen every Sunday.

In a development not seen for many a long day we were to have NO Newcomers today, while Richard Bolton comfortably managed longest Welcome Back at 28 weeks. It showed, Richard!

The immediate past committee member for Web Affairs managed to take out one caddy when his cart hit a drainage cover with its angle tilted up – in the light rough causing the cart to jump two feet in the air, and not long after scared the bejeezus out of a couple more of them with a most vicious duck hook as they idled under the shade of tree 50 meters in front of the tee. Not a great day for caddies.

Many thanks to Santi for showing up to help with the scoring after the game – and this despite an injured toe 🙂

The Play

PC Summary

PC - WinaPlaying her very best round for a long time Wina came home with an excellent net 65 in the the best result of the day and B Grade and a rather high net 78 was good enough, in the absence of the superstars, to see Axel win Grade A while Arthur Mallari may see himself up a grade next week in taking Grade C with a net 66! Well done to them all.

As he still hasn’t a handicap, our visitor from Kiwiland, Dominic May, took the only major prize open to him with an 85 off  the stick, and if Brenda gets the scorecard backlog into the system this week he should have a handicap for next week. Grade A in case you were wondering, Dominic.

The usual shuffling around of prizes to ensure nobody is able to retire on the sums involved meant that Keith won Low Putts. Peter Bush took 1st Birdy (on the 1st) and Stuart Walker the 1st Sandy on the 17th.

Michael Seabrook’s 13 improvement on the back 9 was quite unchallenged while Reka’s par at the 8th hole put her in the money. Again 🙂

PC - ShirtsA healthy 6 skirts “awarded” on the day, 33% of the qualifying field so well done to them all.

PC - Monster Putter

Given the choice of monkey masks, the winner this week demanded the one that provides full anonymity – so well done Teddy (Ragg).

The distinction of Most Strokes was shared by Mike Sperry and Peter Bush with Peter’s impressive score being largely the results of some very wild slashes putting his ball out bounds on at least 2 occasions – and there may even have been a water ball in that lot, your scribe’s eyes were watering over by that stage.

More detailed player by player results here while all the prize winners and more can be seen on our photo gallery.

Next up

A very special early in the year treat for you next Sunday with our first ever visit to the legendary Cengkareng Golf Club out on the airport jalan tol. A breeze to get to from South Jakarta on a Sunday morning these days with the Tee Setter’s best friend, the JORR, in operation.

Green fees of a very attractive 750,000 for this walking only course and with a start from at least 2 tees – though we hope for more. Whatever the arrangements we will tee off starting at 12 noon.

Getting there in plenty of time is highly recommended so that we can get a big field of 16 flights put together – and you can benefit from what is alleged to be the best golf course kitchen in the whole of Indonesia -and maybe even an early heart starter with the club’s signature drink being the frozen Margarita 🙂

Signing up early is also highly recommended as we are restricted to those 16 flights we mentioned. No tears.

See ya at Cengkareng! …. Tee Set

Next up: Pondok Cabe, Sunday 3rd January 2016

Pondok CabeIf you haven’t already done so then sign up now for what has to be a great afternoon at the Tee Set friendly Pondok Cabe on Sunday and the first round of 2016.

A perfect way to spend your last hours of freedom before putting your nose back to the grindstone on Monday 😦

As we mentioned the other day, the main drag out to the course, the Cirendeu road, is something of a mess with some minor widening and the installation of a solid concrete base to the whole length of the thing. Take the colourful route on this map past Fatmawati Hospital – and not the grey one which will only lead to unhappiness.Route

Alternatively, if you are coming from the Pondok Indah side of things then you can take the Old Bogor Road and hang a left at Jl. Cabe Raya (at the McDonalds). Last time we looked the turn to Pondok Cabe was well sign-posted.

OFT

And finally some statistics to close out the Old Year before we start the new.

Stats

Nothing of earth shattering significance except that skirts are on the up, while birdies and eagles are dropping out of the sky.

More encouraging is that the number of player rounds actually crept up year on year to within loose change of 2,000, and this in a most difficult period for the Indonesian economy generally, and its oil and gas, and mining sectors in particular.

So, on that cheery note, see ya at Pondok Cabe for an 11:30 start!! … Tee Set

PS Happy New Year 🙂
