Pondok Cabe, Sunday 8th February 2014

Sign of the timesThe Day

An unusually large number of Tee Setters were up with the birds on Sunday arriving at Pondok Cabe around 9am to have their breakfast – when they were able to watch as a lot of very wet morning golfers completing their splash rich rounds.

While the number of Tee Setters shrank from the 49 who had registered to just 43 in the flesh, presumably as a result of the weather, we again dodged a bullet as the rain stopped at the start of play which had been brought forward a little thanks to sound organisation and an efficient starter. This set the pattern for a well-paced round of golf with most back in the clubhouse before 4pm and the next downpour.

Welcome backsThe flow of Newcomers to Tee Set continued with four new faces and some memorable welcome backs led by Neil Maclean after 144 weeks and Chris Till after 136 –  with Chris denying that he had ever played with us before and insisting he should be another Newcomer!!

We have the records Chris – 1st July 2012 at Permata Sentul – and you didn’t get a skirt!

Pondok Cabe again impressed Tee Setters – a sound design means that every hole presents a challenge.  A few of the greens were a little bare and it is not as manicured as the more expensive courses but offers excellent value for money – not least in the restaurant with its good food and drink at reasonable prices.

Free beerJust seven Tee Setters were to qualify for the free and very large bottles of Bintang on offer for those turning up in full 2014 Tee Set Championship regalia – and also possessed of the requisite Tee Set towel. Full marks to Nicky Moir for managing to somehow bring the whole lot from Scotland in order to qualify!

To add to the fun, the Former President of Almost Everything brought along a few bottles of happy water to celebrate Lis’s birthday and, with Lis there, he was to leave for home rather unaccustomedly early 🙂

Recent work on bunkering and cart paths have improved the course, although the Web Guy chose to freestyle wildly off the paths, throwing Mrs Pie from side to side and at one stage running over his own ball – yes the bright yellow one!  Tee Set’s favourite on-course Warung lady was once more a highlight on the 3rd, glamorous as always, and slowing play on that particular tee as Tee Setters and caddies stopped for drinks and gorengan.

The Play

Skills

The scores today showed once again that Pondok Cabe presents a fair test of golf with many in the field shooting close to their handicap but few below it.

Nicky Moir took out low gross with an impressive 80 (net 69) with Graham McGeady (net 72), Tom Grace (net 69) and Cucu Chandra (net 70) winning Low Net in the grades. Jess Kindler’s net 70 was his best round for a long while and he was desperately unlucky to miss out to Cucu in the C Grade on the dreaded countback. Keep at it, Jess!!

Amongst the lesser awards, Koen’s startling 15 shot improvement on the homeward nine was the stand out while in a rare moment of Tee Set controversy, first par over 30 was almost gifted to Mike Harling before an alert audience pointed out his handicap was under 30 and, before Mike could wave the 100k note around, it was quickly handed to its rightful owner in Lina Bunter.

Chris Lever again featured in the money with a miserly 26 putts while Alistair Livingston did well snatched 1st Birdie on only his second hole.

Boobies

skirt fameIn a very healthy day for the Tee Set coffers, there were 4 skirts led by regular cross dressers Suermondt, Harling and Kaempf who were to be joined by a Wally Walters whose playing partners declared his a “muscular skirt” – with his tee shot viciously rocketing into a tee side barrier fence before cannoning back to the ladies’ tee at frightening speed.

10 is the lonliest numberMost Strokes is not usually a big money-maker for us but today was to be a little different with 7, yes seven, players contriving to take 10 on a hole and having to pony up 50,000 apiece for the smiling Treasurer to put to future good use 🙂

Monkey businessAlbert Ong celebrated his Tee Set debut by winning Monster Putter and modelling the new Monster Putter mask.  Finally, three of the week’s cross dressers were joined by three other honest souls to share Most Strokes with 10.

Also of note was that for the first time in a long time, Leona did not feature in the prize awards; but only because she didn’t play of course.

Interleague

With Interleague starting on 22 February, the Former President of Almost Everything has now assumed the Interleague Captaincy after the Vice President for Golf Economics relieved himself (of the duty).

Ric is actively scouting potential Tee Setters of different handicaps to represent us in our quest to win the 2015 Interleague title.  Selection will be on the basis of form, team balance, and willingness to pay the hefty Jagorawi green fees.

2015 Tee Set Matchplay

Yep, the months roll along and its time to start thinking about the 2015 Tee Set Matchplay already.

The format is the same but a little different this year with the first round match up based upon USGA handicaps with 1 playing 2, 3 playing 4 and so on down the line which will avoid early on mismatches but will make it more fun later.

Fernando has once again taken on the poisoned chalice of organising the Matchplay again this year, a particularly welcome development given the excellent fist he made of it all in 2014 🙂

100,000 roops to register and with 6 already signed up today so sign up below to get yourself into one of Tee Set’s Premier competitions – and many would argue the most pure and fun form of the game of golf,

Imperial Gold Club

Next week sees our very first Monthly Medal at Imperial Golf Klub, the first of six and, in addition to the Monthly Medal prizes, we will also be competing for the “eclectic format” Imperial Champion and place getters over the six-week period. We may even remember to bring the Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive banners.

An “eclectic” tournament is a multi-round golf tournament that results in one 18-hole score per player. Each golfer plays X number of rounds and compares his or her score on each hole per round. The lowest score made on each hole is recorded, producing an 18-hole score.  So the more rounds you play the more chance you have of lowering your score on a particular hole.

Over the 6 weeks at Imperial for example, next Sunday you might score a 6 on hole No. 1; in May, you score a 7 and in July, you score a 4. You would therefore record an eclectic score of 4 on that hole.  Your handicap would be applied to your combined eclectic score for the full 18 holes. The winner and place are determined by, well, we are sure you can guess …

Get yourself signed up for the Monthly Medal at the delightful Imperial here, tee off at 12:00 and with green fees of a relatively modest 750,000 roops for such a fine course

See ya at Imperial!! ….. Tee Set

Next up: Pondok Cabe, Sunday 8th February 2014

Pondok CabeAlways a popular course, and with 35 Tee Setters already registered for play on Sunday. Pondok Cabe is a better course in many respects than it is generally given credit for.

With decent greens (though with a couple of exceptions, not too much borrow), well-kept and mostly generous fairways, the cheapest beer on the Jakarta circuit with the possible exception of Pangkalan Jati and really very decent food, it is a permanent fixture in the Tee Set calendar.

Their cart tracks are just about finished now and given the wet state of the ground at the moment they may even enforce their use this Sunday; or maybe not – and of course Pondok Cabe caddies who carry a handbag to work every morning are notoriously thin on the ground.

Green fees of a wallet-lite 500,000 roops including shared cart – and we think the walking option is possible for around 80,000 less. Tee off from 1 and 10 at 11am so you will have to get out of bed a little earlier on a Sunday than of late. Register here if you haven’t done so already and join in the fun.

Regrettably, it is not too often that we get updates to “News from afar” however Dave Tarcy’s move from the warmth of the Aussie summer to the bitter cold of Northern Europe now features there – though no golf as it will be a month or two before they get the snow off the courses.

As you may have noticed, your Committee came out of a deep Winter slumber a week or so back to announce that players over 65 and Handicap Group C players (essentially those with a Handicap of 26 or over) may elect to play off white tees in future (and receive a slightly lower handicap as the quid pro quo). We will be sending those affected an e-mail shortly offering them the choice to so elect (it is NOT compulsory), an election choice that may be made at any time but once made it is irreversible.

See ya at Pondok Cabe!! … Tee Set

Riverside, Sunday 1st February 2014

???????????????????????????????

it’s a jungle out there …. one of the best afternoon’s golf, ever 🙂

The day

Tee Set golfers are a hardy bunch and, when they awake to the sounds of thunder and torrential rain outside their bedroom windows on their sacred golfing Sunday, they never consider that an event might be called off due to bad weather.

So it was that despite it having been raining constantly for up to 48 hours in parts of Jakarta, fully 23 of the 33 registered Tee Setters made their optimistic way to the lovely Riverside.

By the time the scheduled 12:00 tee time rolled around, the rain had not stopped and the Starter refused to start. Perhaps with an eye on the loss of revenue staring them in the face, we then received word that we could start at 1.15. Still raining though and 11 more gave up and went home to stretch their legs in front of a log fire or something.

The remainder, a group that was to be variously dubbed the “beating heart”, the “hard-core” and the “lunatic fringe” of Tee Set (choose your pick) hung in there however and tee-ed off in a light rain to an empty course led by the Head Lunatic in Charge (your scribe has made his own choice) the former President of Almost Everything.

Suddenly perfect playing conditions appeared and the course was now owned by Tee Set. Golf does not get any better than this and could be compared to being the first out of the chair lift on virgin snow or arriving at daybreak at Cimaja with a 6 foot swell running and nobody out.   For those that did not stay for the experience, eat your hearts out.

Welcome Back

Those who showed but didn’t play are credited with a round anyway.

Just one Newcomer this week – and he immediately joined  the Lunatic Fringe – well done Mick Dodsworth – a flying start to your Tee Set career. Mick was so impressed with the day’s event that he even followed the group back to the Star Deli after the game.

Welcome Backs were just 4 and only one of them actually got to play, he with the winning number of 9 weeks, Doug McQuater. Welcome back, all.

Tom and CucuThe lateness of the start and the other unusual circumstances meant there were no Tee Set fees and, for once, no prizes or skirts and all the rest though we have of course recorded the numbers for the statistics. The lack of prize giving meant that there was more time than usual for drinks and food.

The play

Skills

Good finish Mick!

Good finish Mick!

2 shot penalty?

2 shot penalty?

While there was no money coming in and none going out, bragging rights still apply even though from a much reduced field of just 13 Tee Setters.

Simon Reynolds made a near-miraculous recovery from his back strain to post the best gross score with an 80 while Jiro took low net with a 69.

Welcome Back-er Dougie McQuater took low putts with 30 on a day when the worst putting result was a miserly 37. Just goes to show what you can do with soft greens.

Next up

Back once again to the ever-popular Pondok Cabe, a much improved course with plenty to offer including mostly wallet-lite green fees, “Tee Set friendly” fairways and, not least, the cheapest beer you will find on a course in Jakarta and its surrounds!

Sufficient time has now elapsed since the 2014 Set Championship for your maid/houseboy/jaga/wife etc etc to have lost/misfiled/burned/sold most of the gear you picked up on that magnificent day.

With one eye clearly on the beer prices available, your committee has therefore decided to offer a big bottle of Bintang or Anker to anyone turning up at Pondok Cabe in full 2015 Set Championship regalia, ie shirt, cap and socks – and bearing a Tee Set towel. Their generosity knows few bounds; we wonder how many will get the big green bottle?

Tee off at 11am from 1 and 10 as ever, with green fees etc of just 500,000 including shared cart so sign up here – and don’t be late, we sometimes get away early at Cabe.

See yah Sunday … Tee Set

Well done them and all the other paid-up members of the Tee Set Lunatic Fringe!!

Shock horror, perfect record in jeopardy – last minute save!!

Rain godsAfter nearly 24 hours of continuous rain in the Jakarta area, Tee Set’s record of never having failed to play on a weekend in the nearly 32 years of its existence was under significant threat.

Salute then the 11 (or so) Tee Setters who set off in rain at 1.15 today at Riverside to preserve our proud boast. Only five of them pictured here – but well done to them all!!

Next up: Riverside, Sunday 1st February 2015

RiversideThe rate for Riverside has been agreed at 850,000 rupiah for Sunday’s 12:00 midday tee off from tee boxes 1 & 10, a little more than we would have wished for, but still a good price for a great course.

On course beer prices are not cheap and you might consider taking the usual mitigating measures 🙂

More than 20 already signed up so why don’t you join them for the delights of Riverside on a day we have been guaranteed will be rain free – if it is not then we are firing our Pawang Hujan after last week’s performance – and looking for a new one.

The Cilandak Rotary have the solution to making sure you turn up in perfect condition for Tee Set Sunday – a varied and interesting programme at the Kristal Hotel’s Satu Lagi bar on Saturday night!!

All proceeds going to a very worthy local charity, Rawinala and you can expect to see a number of well-known Tee Setters there, making sure they are in tip-top condition for Sunday.

Matoa Monthly Medal, 25th January, 2015

James scoring well all day

James scored well all day

The Day

The day that had everything with the drama starting with a very late tee off as the Starter over-loaded the course once again while our backs were turned and, not for the first time, forfeited his two redbacks.

Despite our regular Pawang Hujan being at the forefront of the groups, he was to forfeit his redbacks too as we got hit by very heavy rain around the turn.

The Spartans in group 2 felt the pelting rain was an improvement on conditions in their home courses of Scotland, New Zealand, Switzerland and Tasmania respectively, and proudly (some might say obliviously) played through it.

Of the many who opted for shelter, those with the time and the patience were rewarded as Matoa, in common with most of the courses we play, has a most astonishing ability to turn from being a lake to lovely playing conditions in less than an hour – and the 14 out of a great turnout of 42 Tee Setters who bailed out for an early shower missed idyllic playing conditions on the back nine.

The Spartans took great honour in calling the group led by the SP for slow play after they ran for shelter and fell 8 holes behind. The inseparable King and Pascal followed not far behind and the last group had to use their flashlights to find their way to the clubhouse.

Welcome backsJust one Newcomer to report this week in Paul Humphries.

A warm welcome – and enjoy your golf with Tee Set, Paul.

A big Welcome Back to Bob McLeod who carded a strong 84 with three birdies – and Nicky Moir making his third escape of the Winter from the frozen wastelands of Aberdeen to win longest drive and get some colour into that peely wally Scottish body of his!!

Dave Shenman was farewelled a week after his wife On, as he returns to the bull ring of the Honiara Golf Club in the Solomon Islands.

Following the fine example of his fellow Spartan Nicky Moir, Dave promises to come back whenever he possibly can.

The Play

SkillsA very happy JamesThe DayJames Ross’s mind boggling  42 Stableford points in the conditions was the only round of the day to exceed Stableford “par” of 36 points. Where did that one come from, James, we guess you got that driver under control!!

James also demonstated the advantage of Stableford by winning despite also taking the “prize” for Most Strokes on a Hole with 11. That may very well be a unique combination.

As Monthly Medal Winner, James gets a coveted place on the handsome Tee Set shield of course.

Simon Reynolds again took out Low Gross of 80 with an excellent back nine recovery following the rain break. A number of Tee Setters tied for Low Net with prizes being awarded to those actually still there for the awards – Tee Set stalwarts Evaldo, Tom, Cucu and John sharing the winnings.

The singing president - and his piesThe Singing President and the Grumpy Pirate tied for closest to the pin, to the centimetre, with the SP offering to share some of Santi’s pies with Graham when he sees him next, if he doesn’t eat them first.

Nicky Moir won longest drive with a power packed 260m on a wet course while our very own pocket rocket, Barbora, landed 210m out and right on the centre line.

3 Skirts

Three skirts on the day and, in what must surely be a first, a 100% turnout for the cross-dressers walk of shame. Well done, all three of you!

Fuller, player by player results here and more photos of a rainy day on the Tee Set Gallery.

Blue Tees or White Tees?

While keeping it simple is a key to Tee Set’s success, we are also committed to providing Tee Setters with the most enjoyable golf possible.

After reviewing the results of the recent survey and consulting with many Tee Setters, the Committee has decided that on a few nominated courses, based on distance and difficulty, ALL men will play off the white tees.

In addition, players with handicaps of 25 and above and players over 65 in age can also make a one time election to play off the white tees on all courses. Handicaps are of course adjusted based on the tee of course

Next Up

RiversideOn our schedule page we mention that “This can move about a bit – and sometimes at relatively short notice” and its underlying wisdom is proven yet again this week as we take the opportunity to swap dates between Kedaton and Riverside with the latter becoming our venue next Sunday.

Little to be added that hasn’t already been said about Riverside, a course in the very top ranks hereabouts with its superb mountain backdrop, many challenging holes and immaculate clubhouse facilities.

Tee off from 1 and 10  at 12:00 at a rate provisionally set at 850,000.

A cart only course and we will advise the final rate on Thursday after the VP of Golf Economics has concluded negotiations. Sign up here, don’t miss a truly delightful course.

Monthly Medal, Matoa, Sunday 25th January 2014

We will be having our last Monthly Medal  for some time at Matoa on Sunday as we will then be changing the scenery for a while to take advantage of the VP of Course Economics’ newly negotiated and very attractive agreement with the popular Imperial Golf Klub with a K, and move our “home base” to there for the following six months – before returning to Matoa in time for a few rounds practice ahead of the 2015 Tee Set Championship in November.

All of the above and much more is reflected in the latest update to our 2o15 schedule.

Tom and SimonTom Alcedo and Simon Reynolds won our monthly Blue Ribbon event last time with 42 Stableford points apiece. We are not going to let that happen again surely.

The Monthly Medal offers all the usual grab bag of prizes plus a valuable Slaney’s Meat voucher for the winner, while Nearest to the Pin gets him or herself 6 of Santi’s Premium Pies of course.

Tee off at 11am from 1 and 10 with green fees of 700,000 roops including compulsory shared cart.

If you want to join the more than 30 Tee Setters who have already signed up then let us know on “Yes, I’m Playing” and remember to indicate any grouping preference you may have at the same time. If you don’t, then no tears come Sunday.

See ya at Matoa!! … Tee Set

Halim II, Sunday January 18th 2014

BridgeThe Day

Halim 2 again offered Tee Setters exactly what we expect from it – cheap and cheerful facilities, winning beer prices, lockers that don’t lock, chaotic starts, long long holes – especially on the par 3s, free enterprise in action at almost every tee box and walking for those who wanted it – together making for a very enjoyable day out.

All in all a very popular venue, not least because getting there is a breeze for most and getting home not too bad either, though we may very well consider going off the white tees in future to mitigate some of that length.

Welcome backsA few unexpected but welcome last minute starters, nicely balanced out some late cry offs to leave us at a healthy 44 Tee Setters on the day.

While there were no Newcomers, Tee Set welcomed back Georges Koller after a creditable 185 weeks (away in Australia) since last playing, Mike and Renny Sperry returned after more than a year and Rod Ritson after a far too long 20 weeks.

Great to see again the enthusiasm, and no little skill, of our youngest new members, Barbora and Daniel, apologies Daniel for hiding your scorecard for a little while there.

These little people are going to sweep all before them at Tee Set if they hang around any length of time. And after that who knows?

The lift, clean and cheat rule was presciently introduced before the start of play as many balls were later to be found in and on a mess on the very damp fairways. With the heart of the rainy season coming up, please note that the rule is now in force until further notice.

Unusual vodkaThe recently appointed Honorary Vice President for Exotic Drinks, James Young, was sorely missed. The heavily spiked Es Buah concoction put together by the SP did not come close to James’ recent offerings. Come back James, all is forgiven!

“Fashion” highlights of the day led from the front from the SP sporting blue checks and the VP for Golf Economics in mint green, ably supported as usual by those twins in orange Evaldo and Dave Shenman, Bushy, and not least the perfectly presented Renny Sperry who introduced a touch of delicately coordinated leather into the Tee Set uniform.

The Play

skills

cigarsMike HarlingAnlo celebrated his win as Low Net A Grade sharing Cubans with Joseph d’Cruz while the Mikes, Webb and Harling, celebrated their respective B and C Grade wins a little more prosaically with the remarkably cheap cans of Bintang on offer.

All Grade winners were within a stroke of net par which is unusually high for a field the size we had. Yep, the course was undoubtedly the winner on a day when Simon Reynolds’ 83 off the stick was enough to take Low Gross.

Missed was the award for First Par for handicap >= 30 which is still being resolved – apologies from the Singing President to anyone who though they missed out – he promises to sort it all before next week 🙂

Boobies

Skirts

That other Halim tradition of “Skirts Under chandelier” was not to catch all of the day’s cross-dressers but surely Pieter Groen’s spectacular T-shirt more than made up for those missing.

In case you were wondering, the man desperately seeking anonymity was Matt Kaempf so, please, don’t tell anyone.

Matt actually dodged a bullet on Monster Putter as he hit only 39 putts, a number that even our notoriously “pelit” Treasurer has been know to forgive and forget – as we were to do in his absence today.

Leona secured her invariable place in the after match awards, though this time with a very honest and rather stunning 16 to “win” Most Strokes. Still a couple shy of the all time record of 18 strokes recorded on a hole twice previously by two Tee Setters, Tee Setters whose names we will not recall out of human kindness, we are nice chaps here after all. Come back soon Reka and Misa.

More photos of a great day on our gallery here – and more detailed, player by player results here.

Next Up:

Monthly Medal time of course, and the last time for a while at Matoa as we are moving the Medal to the very popular Imperial for the following 6 months – before returning one again to Matoa for a couple of months ahead of this year’s Tee Set Championship, a Championship which will again be at Matoa.

Matoa hardly needs elaboration, very decent bit of grass and recently much improved both on and off the course – and with the excellent facilities for post-play relaxation that is part of the reason we like it as our Championship venue.

A cart only course for us these days with reasonable green fees etc of 700,000 roops for an earlier than usual start of 11am on Sunday. Sign up here to join in the fun and the chance to win a Slaney’s Meat voucher and 6 of Santi’s Premium Pies as well as all the usual glittering cash prizes..

Flights

As you may have seen today, we are trying to pre-cook flights from the registrations. These are done on the basis of well known preferences and supplemented by those expressed in the registration form; after that we try to match people up on the basis of Grade.

There are always no-shows and people turning up not having registered of course, but we cope with that. If you haven’t expressed a preference, or have not registered at all or have registered after 4pm on a Friday then you are very welcome, however, it is wiser not to ask to be inserted into an already arranged group.

On the day, flights are allocated to tee boxes on the basis of order of arrival of the first player in a flight. Arrive early, expect to get away early, arrive late then don’t be surprised if you get away late.

All seems pretty fair to us.

See ya at Matoa! ….. Tee Set

imcaddiePS Graham McGeady’s iCaddie went walkabout at Pangkalan Jati after he left it on a table there after play on the 14th December. If anyone has any clue to its whereabouts then please drop Graham an e-mail.

PPS The Singing President is organising a very informal mini-competition for those who want to join at Royale Jakarta on Australia Day, 26 January teeing off at 7am.  You don’t need to be Australian or a Tee Setter to join, just let Craig know your name and handicap on craig.ewers@aipj.or.id so he can work out a decent price and arrange the booking.  The format will be decided between now and then.

PPPS The iconic space shuttle snap was taken by Keith’s caddy – or so he thought – until he realised his caddy had taken 6 selfies instead. Unfortunately Mrs Miller subsequently saved the poor caddy from his 15 minutes by deleting them all 😦

Next up: Halim II, Sunday 18th January 2015

Halim 226 already signed up (Messrs Chan and Murchison, you are in!) for what should be an excellent day at a very decent course and pleasant clubhouse on Sunday. If you intend playing and haven’t registered already then it really helps us if you can register before 4pm today 🙂

Extensively tree-lined, but with some mitigation in the form of pretty wide fairways as you will see above, Halim II is an interesting challenge for all.

The results of our poll on the possible use of white tees is in and we will be providing the full results and our view of what it all means next week. One thing is clear already and that is that we should have asked the question, which playing Grade are you??!!

See ya at Halim! …. Tee Set

PS here is the google maps version of Halim II’s location, located a hop, skip and a jump off the Jagorawi Tol it’s a pretty easy find, the only challenge is going to the right clubhouse as those for Halim 1 & Halim 2 are located next to each other on opposite sides of the road so make sure you get the right one.

Imperial Golf Klub, Sunday 11th January 2014

glorious end to a glorious day

A glorious end to a glorious day ……….

The day

One of the best weather days we have ever seen in Jakarta with beautiful clear blue skies and a brisk breeze to keep us cool – and not so much as a hint of rain all day.

150 players on the course in the afternoon (fully 56 of them being Tee Setters) made for quite a bit of juggling by the starter to minimize holdups, including our first tee being delayed some 25 minutes  however it was still a long round for all with the best time being 5 hours – and long shadows were being cast by the time the last group returned.

XNewcomersA new record number of Newcomers – a stunning 11 in all, including an entire family package, Mum, Dad, son and daughter, the Gaislers from the Czech Republic. A warm Tee Set welcome to all 11 of them.

Welcome Backs were even more numerous though the numbers of weeks away were rather tame compared to some we have seen recently, with the pack led by Patrick Crowley on a measly 21 weeks, a Patrick who had been dragged out of a warm bed that morning in order to bring “Uncle Pulpy” George to the course. Never mind he enjoyed a great day!

The Acting VP of Exotic and semi-Exotic drinksThe staple fare of your average Tee Setter has long been your Bintang or Anker or maybe even Heineken but things are changing as, following on from his discovery of the “Blue Lotus Margarita” at Lotus Lakes last week, James Young was today to pro-actively discover that they make a pretty mean frozen Margarita at Imperial.

Those committee members present were so impressed that they immediately appointed James as the Acting VP of Exotic Drinks, a position that is only “Acting” for the present as the constitution requires a full vote in formal committee meeting for the establishment of new positions. HR departments, don’t you love ’em.

Acting or not, the VP of Exotic Drinks discovery was to prove popular and the sampling by a small but enthusiastic cadre was to go on way past the sunset hour. Certainly not the day to pull the short straw as designated driver for the Former President of Nearly Everything – .

Contributing to a fabulous day was a fabulous bunch of waitresses who put up with the rowdy hangers-on well into the night. They fully deserved their handsome tip.

The playXSkill prizes

Our new pocket battleshipThe outstanding story of the day was without doubt the debut of pocket battleship 13-year-old Barbora Gaiselerova who shot 84 off the stick – never having see the course before – and won Low Gross on a count back from the VP of Golf Course Economics, and this year’s Interleague Captain, Simon Reynolds.

One can only imagine that Simon will be calling upon Barbora in his latter capacity in the not too distant future.

Peter Bush shot a career-best 38 on his front 9, a result  he dedicated to his absent Interleague match play partner, Mike Garwood. Followed it up with a safe handicap retention back nine of 51 but still managed to secure Grade B Low Net. The newly appointed VP of Exotic Drinks overcame his Skirt  to take Grade “A” Low Net with a net 72.

Overall Low Net winner on the day was a  Carolyn Taylor (and not Leona Jelinkova) shooting 3 under her handicap yet again; though we suspect the honour was miscalled on the day. Severe warnings have been handed out. Apologies Leona.

Highlight hole of the day was to go to Neil Mullins who, coming down the fairway on hole 18 after a reasonable drive, dumped his 2nd into the water and followed this up with two fluffed swings and a loose pitch which sent his ball right of the flag – and his club straight into the pond. Forced to scratch the hole just in case another club was lost to the demons. He’ll be back next week we suspect, if only to rescue his missing pitching wedge.

A towering shot from Pulpy GeorgeGeorge “Pulpy” Bevege was not quite up to his usual standard on a quick return to the country; “quick” as he had promised that his round a few weeks ago was his “last for some time” – but still took Low Putts with 28, on a count back from Joe D’Cruz, a decent total on a course possessed of greens that can only be described as “challenging”.

Pulpy will be back again for another quick visit in a couple of weeks after a golfing sojourn in the Philippines.

Debutante David Daly had a most exciting day, winning himself a Skirt, running up a total of 46 putts, a total that would have won him Monster Putter almost any other week – but still came out ahead on the day as he eased the rust out from his swing to take Most Improved with a highly impressive 12 shot improvement on his back 9.

SkirtsAll in all a very healthy crop of 9 Skirts to keep the Treasurer happy, most notably with single handicapper Simon Reynolds donning the Skirt of Shame for only the second time in 48 attempts:-)

Another Newcomer, and beginner, Lill Dong blew away Paul Chidwick’s previous Monster Putter high of 51 blows with 56 of her own to secure Monster Putter. Keep at it Lill, as a beginner you now get a two month exemption from Monster Putter!!

HD Space Shuttle

A unlikely congress of a Space Shuttle with a Boeing 747 at Halim

Next weekend sees us return to Halim II after a five month break  – last time out we described the journey to the course in the morning as “an absolute delight” although, upon arrival, the starter took some convincing before accepting that we actually had a booking. More importantly we also called it a “pretty fair course, with the generously wide fairways more than making up for the massive tree formations lined up along most fairways”.

12 o’clock start from two tee boxes and green fees etc of 530,000 including shared buggy, or just 430,000 if you take the rare opportunity to stretch your legs to walk a very decent course – though with rather slow greens as you will discover.

See yah at Halim 2! … Tee Set
