30th Birthday Round, Matoa, Sunday 1st September

82 Tee Setters all in a row

The Day

Under strict orders from the President of Everything to keep it simple, it all became, erm, a little more complex, not least due to the PoE’s propensity for adding stuff as we went along!!

Registration went smoothly enough with Tuti, acting as secretary for what turned out for the last time, having everything under control while ALL 82 registrants arrived in what must surely be a Tee Set first!

Tee Set Brownie Points for Jesse Baker turning up with his wife on the verge of giving birth to their first child. Jesse was to leave just a little early, and swaying only slightly, with the power of modem communications assuring him that all was still well at home!

The first thing to assail our sense after claiming our Tee Set 30th Anniversary Shirts were Mike Garwood’s fabulous Chilli Beans for breakfast. Given a little extra oomph today in honour of the occasion, word had it that they were powering many players best drives of the season. Mike tells us that the secret is actually not in the chillies but in the frozen Margaritas he adds to the brew; who are we to doubt? …  the result was just outstanding!

Despite the Starter’s inability to follow through on a promise (given by someone else in fairness) to provide us with a mini-shotgun start, all rounds took less than five hours on a gloriously sunny and hot day though, thankfully  we got a little cloud cover from mid-afternoon onwards to provide some relief.

Some old Tee Setters had a difficult choice as to what tournament to play today, with the Old Boys Bogor Tournament and the Tee Set’s 30th year anniversary bash at the Matoa course both on offer. Just as well as with 82 players at the 30th Anniversary event, it was pretty crowded as it was!

The Tee Setter making the longest journey for today’s round was 2008 Tee Set Champion Robert Bellavance who came all the way from KL – well done Robert!

geoffGeoff Thwaites, two time former President and our longest standing member, shared some of his Tee Set memories and even earlier going right back to 1968, playing the old courses of Rawamangun, Sewangan Besar, Senayan. Old Bogor and Pangkalan Jati. The only rule he remembered from those days, and one which still applies today, is you must be able to stand on the 1st tee box unassisted in order to qualify for play.

Geoff further shared with us that the society has had its ups and downs over the years since its establishment in 1983 and the number of flights each week has varied from as little as a single group to as many as 100 players for a special event.

The most important point, however, is that Tee Set has never missed a weekend’s golf in over 30 years; no other group can boast such a history. The concept of a leisurely tee off between 10AM and 12PM does not attract the fanatic golfer but instead  those who enjoy a relaxed round in good company and having a few beers afterwards with friends old and new.

Dinner afterwards was better than your average bear, Boo Boo, with a very decent buffet from the club, beef ribs big enough to satisfy the strongest hunger – and Ricky Cunningham’s freshwater Yabbies – of which we managed to consume 20 kilograms!! If you have a need to cater parties or whatever then bear Ricky’s yabbies in mind, you will find him on our Classifieds page.

Unsung heroesAs ever, lots of people involved in making the day happen, and happen so enjoyably; too many to name one by one, but please remember the guys and gals who prepare the food, design, order and distribute the shirts, acquire the beer, wine and softies at great prices and get them into the hands of thirsty Tee Setters – unsung heroes all. Thank you to all of you; you know who you are.

Two Newcomers to report on this day for reflection on our past, Valerie Svobodova and Bagus Nirtomo, a warm Tee Set welcome to you both – just don’t expect it to be like this every week!!

Finally, today saw the last event, in a secretarial capacity anyway Tuti who has retired to take up a better offer! Many thanks to Tuti for all her efforts and smiling personality – and whose winning personality kept even the less controllable under control!

The Play

Prizes

Santis hole in oneThe highlight of a great day’s play on a course in very decent condition must surely be Santi Miller who hit a great shot at the par 3 8th and saw it roll 4-5 metres before nestling against the flag for five nerve-racking seconds or so before dropping in!

Santi then went on a delirious round of kissing and being hugged by her playing partners before we could settle her down enough to take this photo.

The second hole-in-one of Santi’s relatively short career, “but the best” she told us!

Everyone a winner

Everyone a winner – and happy ones at that!

The principal honour on the day, Low Net Stableford points, was shared by Matt Fairey and Shane Rawles with 43 Stableford points apiece, great shooting guys!

If my ears didn’t deceive me then Joseph Peries took long drive with an astonishing 297 metres while Mark Kilner was just 30 cm away on the neary hole. Well done to all the winners.

Detailed, player by player, results for our 30th Anniversary Round can be found here.

Wow, what a day!

The Shirts

Pleased to report that the 30th Anniversary Shirts were well received and that delivery execution was nearly flawless with only one shirt going astray, so apologies to Craig Metter’s whose “Feeling Lucky” shirt decided to stay at home together with 20 odd other shirts for those not attending on the day. Apologies to Craig 😦

Many thanks to Octa who ensured that distribution in the clubhouse was conducted in an orderly manner, outstanding monies collected and all issues properly recorded – and this in the face of gangs of marauding Tee Setters wanting to do no more than help themselves to their shirt and get away to the changing room – well done Octa, great job!

A total of 115 shirts, a sell out, will now be gracing the clubhouses and fairways of Jakarta and further afield, including 12 which were “extras” and without name tags. A number of disappointed Tee Setters were unable to get themselves a shirt therefore – and optimistically put in “orders”.  We have therefore indeed decided to put in a small second order for more shirts so, if you would like a(nother) shirt, then drop Keith Miller a line in the next day or two, indicating size and name tag required.

For those of you in Jakarta but who were unable to play on the day, we have your shirt in safe keeping and will bring it the next Sunday that you play.

Finally on the shirts front, we are looking for help in getting some shirts to overseas based Tee Setters in Canada, the USA and Europe. If you are heading that way soon then let us know so you can drop them at a post office over there rather than post from here in Indonesia.

Next Sunday

After all the excitement of the 30th Anniversary round, we are out on the Merak Tol after Lippo Karawaci on Sunday next when we return to Kedaton for the first time since February,

Kedaton GC is a most pleasant course and with relatively smooth access in spite of its distance, though it is not a course for those possessed of a hydrophobic disposition, however, with water, water everywhere, and only beer to drink.

Green fees ,including shared cart, of just 610,000 roops or 500,000 walking – which together with reasonable F&B prices means your wallet will not be too damaged by joining in the fun at Kedaton. Register at “Yes, I’m Playing!!” as usual.

And one for the diary, the Tee Set Championship this year will be on on November 24th. Be there, we will be closing the course for the morning – and have lots of entertainment being lined up apart from that on the course itself!

See yah, Sunday! …. Tee Set

Mate as I told you on Sunday, one prize per person. You already won the most Stapleford points prize so first par went to a new comer who was over the moon with the award.
