With the monsoon peeking through the smog of Jakarta the previous week the citizens of the Big Durian sighed a sigh of relief as the first rains washed the pollution out of the skies and fresh air was breathed for the first time in many weeks. Teeset, having been washed out the previous week, was hoping to avoid two washouts in a row. It rarely rains on TeeSet Sunday so we were surprised that only 2 flights turned out last Sunday
Those two flights were men of steel as the temperature soared towards 40 c no buggies were taken. We would enjoy the walk. The Starter had a last minute brain fart and moved us from Tee Box 1 to 10 for a reason no one will ever know. The groups had already been scrambled by the lone committee member so MyGolf2U was something to be completed on return to the clubhouse in 4 hours or so.
The crowd at Halim on arrival was quite large, but this was the morning mob getting the game out of the way before rain could threaten their day. By the time we teed off a couple of Generals’ wives is all the blocked our path to a fast round. There are a lot of trees at Halim but they are well trained trees and normally put your ball back in a playable position on the fairway. Lost balls were rare with Gio and myself both finding the invisible pond on the 4th. The recent rains had put a bit of green back into the fairways. The greens were in good nick, something Riverside could learn from.
We were all back by a bit after 4 for the warm down to commence. A warm down was needed as the scores had maybe been hampered by the Halloween parties of the night before or maybe the heat. In Frank’s case it was a toothache that had him on medication. Steve was wearing his big girls blouse for the first half of the game tee off with a 5 iron but once he put his driver in his hand his game lit up with a string of pars and bogeys to wash away 5 iron blues. As the crowd was small a decision was made to spend the winnings and Teeset fees on beer. This decision was a great decision as Frank had a toothache and was off the pop, Jeff was driving and being responsible and Gio left early. They have a large range of beer at Halim something for everyone and we sampled a bit of it I can tell you that. Our games improved in our minds but the scorecards were there as proof of what actually happened but the beer washed the heat and the dodgy golf out of our short term memories. As the sun set on Halim and the social set arrived to play the first hole driving range, TeeSet ordered their last beers and paid the bills and head to the toll where after a couple of loops it was eventually found.
